The Business of Open Source
The CFO's View of Open Source Companies with Eileen Doody and Karen Walker

The Business of Open Source

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 19, 2025 37:16

This week on The Business of Open Source I had a slightly different conversation: I spoke with the CFOs of two open source companies, Sysdig and Percona, to better understand what is different (and what is not) about financial management in open source companies. Karen Walker is the CFO at Sysdig, and Eileen Doody is the CFO at Percona. They both joined me to talk about the CFO role in general and the CFO role in particular at an open source company. Why did I do this episode? Many founders I've spoken with are a bit unclear on the role of a CFO — whereas I've never spoken with a founder who had trouble understanding what their CTO does. Here's some takeaways from our conversation: Part of the CFO's role is about thinking about open source strategically, in terms of how the open source project is going to fit into the company's overall strategy.Because open source is so ingrained in the company, it doesn't fit into a single budget line item; it's impossible to break out and say ‘we spend $X on open source' because it's so integrated into everything the company doesHow do you measure your ROI on investment in open source? At Sysdig, two out of three prospects come to the company because of Falco, their open source project. We also talked about the ecosystem effects of having a huge footprint with your open source project; it's hard to measure the positive influence of having massive brand awareness, but both CFOs are convinced that it is very important to the company. Eileen says that many CIOs now have mandates to look for open source solutions when possible, which was not the case a decade ago. That's changed the dynamic for a company like Percona that's based around open source. Another reason I did this episode is because while I usually have founders on the podcast, there are some really important perspectives from other leadership team members. Part of the the role of a CEO is to understand all the other C-level leadership position's roles and responsibilities, and in my experience the CFO is one of the less well understood roles. In fact, we wrapped up the conversation by talking about how a CFO can be a real strategic partner that's forward-thinking rather than just the bean-counter that some people expect a CFO to be. A couple things to mention. First of all, if you want to learn more about my consulting work with open source companies, you can do so here. Second, if you want to chance to connect with other founders of open source companies, consider joining Open Source Founders Summit this May 19th and 20th in Paris.

Rebroadcast: this episode was originally released in January 2021.You wake up in a mysterious box, and hear the booming voice of God: “I just flipped a coin. If it came up heads, I made ten boxes, labeled 1 through 10 — each of which has a human in it. If it came up tails, I made ten billion boxes, labeled 1 through 10 billion — also with one human in each box. To get into heaven, you have to answer this correctly: Which way did the coin land?”You think briefly, and decide you should bet your eternal soul on tails. The fact that you woke up at all seems like pretty good evidence that you're in the big world — if the coin landed tails, way more people should be having an experience just like yours. But then you get up, walk outside, and look at the number on your box.‘3'. Huh. Now you don't know what to believe. If God made 10 billion boxes, surely it's much more likely that you would have seen a number like 7,346,678,928?In today's interview, Ajeya Cotra — a senior research analyst at Open Philanthropy — explains why this thought experiment from the niche of philosophy known as ‘anthropic reasoning' could be relevant for figuring out where we should direct our charitable giving.Links to learn more, summary, and full transcript. Some thinkers both inside and outside Open Philanthropy believe that philanthropic giving should be guided by ‘longtermism' — the idea that we can do the most good if we focus primarily on the impact our actions will have on the long-term future.Ajeya thinks that for that notion to make sense, there needs to be a good chance we can settle other planets and solar systems and build a society that's both very large relative to what's possible on Earth and, by virtue of being so spread out, able to protect itself from extinction for a very long time. But imagine that humanity has two possible futures ahead of it: Either we're going to have a huge future like that, in which trillions of people ultimately exist, or we're going to wipe ourselves out quite soon, thereby ensuring that only around 100 billion people ever get to live.If there are eventually going to be 1,000 trillion humans, what should we think of the fact that we seemingly find ourselves so early in history? Being among the first 100 billion humans, as we are, is equivalent to walking outside and seeing a three on your box. Suspicious! If the future will have many trillions of people, the odds of us appearing so strangely early are very low indeed. If we accept the analogy, maybe we can be confident that humanity is at a high risk of extinction based on this so-called ‘doomsday argument‘ alone. If that's true, maybe we should put more of our resources into avoiding apparent extinction threats like nuclear war and pandemics. But on the other hand, maybe the argument shows we're incredibly unlikely to achieve a long and stable future no matter what we do, and we should forget the long term and just focus on the here and now instead. There are many critics of this theoretical ‘doomsday argument', and it may be the case that it logically doesn't work. This is why Ajeya spent time investigating it, with the goal of ultimately making better philanthropic grants. In this conversation, Ajeya and Rob discuss both the doomsday argument and the challenge Open Phil faces striking a balance between taking big ideas seriously, and not going all in on philosophical arguments that may turn out to be barking up the wrong tree entirely. They also discuss:Which worldviews Open Phil finds most plausible, and how it balances themWhich worldviews Ajeya doesn't embrace but almost doesHow hard it is to get to other solar systemsThe famous ‘simulation argument'When transformative AI might actually arriveThe biggest challenges involved in working on big research reportsWhat it's like working at Open PhilAnd much moreProducer: Keiran HarrisAudio mastering: Ben CordellTranscriptions: Sofia Davis-Fogel

Twenty-five years ago, Holly Carinci founded a personal publicity firm specializing in advising actors. She worked alongside Seth MacFarlane, William Shatner, Leonardo DiCaprio, and many others during that time. Ms. Carinci's strength has always been getting behind a client's vision and bringing in brilliant people to help them succeed. When the pandemic arrived, it triggered a re-think in her approach to life and business. She chose to pivot, to do something with more meaning. Holly decided to focus on working with senior executives in areas such as technology, business, medicine, and societal causes. On November 1st, 2022, Holly launched HwP PR Inc., a leadership communications team comprised of top-ranked experts across North America from establishments such as Bloomberg, Disney, PWC, and more. Here's a glimpse of what you'll learn:What pushed Holly Carinci to switch from actor to publicist. The show she first realized success withWhat Holly got William Shatner to host (for his first hosting event)Why Holly's switch from acting to PR opened her up to a different mindsetWhat her current firm doesHow she trains the people coming to work in her firm The process Holly uses to help clients build a reputationHolly's perspective on being a boutique companyIn this episode…Holly Carinci began her PR career not in PR at all, but in acting. It was while pursuing acting jobs and competing for LA-based jobs as a Canadian that she realized she needed someone representing her, making her name known. So she pivoted from acting to publicity and began offering the PR services she had needed as an actor.Despite wonderful success in Hollywood, Holly realized she wanted to do work with a little more meaning and had been recognizing, in the last few years, how CEOs were attracting a lot of hate. So when the film industry largely closed up for COVID, Holly explains that she pivoted again and began doing PR for CEOs. She has a new firm and shares exactly what it's about with Martin. In this episode of What CEOs Talk About, host Martin Hunter and guest Holly Carinci discuss the large pivots in Holly's career, what forms a reputation and how to bolster it, the types of things CEOs need to publicly address, and how Holly ensures her firm has experts in every aspect of PR to address anything a client may need. Holly has great insight into seeing a need and filling it by making a change, and how to really focus on what is important to employees and clients. Resources mentioned in this episode:URGEOContact email: info@urgeo.comMartin Hunter on LinkedInHolly Carinci on LinkedInHwP PR“All the Light We Cannot See” by Anthony DoerrMaster and CommanderThe Last of the MohicansRecommended resources for CEOs:Monday.comBambooHRSponsors For This Episode:“I Need To F**king Talk To You!” by Ken Cameron and Russell Stratton: Learn more and buy the book.Flow 2 Freedom: Sustainable period-friendly activewear.Altruvest: Empowering Charities. What's on your mind as you consider the near and long-term future of your site and how to best monetize it? I'll share what I'm doing near the end in a new section for What I'm Reading that is helping me and will help you too. BlogAid Course Happenings DIY SEO Content Revamp Series Starts This Week Most of y'all know that I was an electronics engineer for 30 years and that I did a lot of technical writing and training during that time. Well, years ago, one of my former webmasters switched careers to become an SEO copywriter who specializes in working with engineers. She said she chose that niche because of me and that all of those engineers deliver content exactly the way I do. They tell you the whole story, and then they give you the resolution as the very last sentence. And that last sentence becomes her title or hook. Then she literally writes the story in reverse, but leaves the step-by-step in order. She just puts it at the end. This year, it dawned on me that I laid out the live workshops of the DIY SEO course the way an engineer would. First we check your SEO foundation. Then we break down all of the SEO opportunities you have on your site and in your content and how to make the most of them, plus what not to do. And at the very end, I tell you how to make those changes. In my mind, I figured you would want to know how to do all the things, and then actually do them all at once. Doing it that way would keep you from updating the same stuff multiple times. But more importantly, it would help you not revise a whole bunch of stuff while making all manner of mistakes because you didn't have the whole story. But, it's clear that this year needs to be different due to Google dinging folks for updating existing content. And folks who are in at least their 2nd year with the course have already applied the big changes and now want to get busy making all the new tweaks from this year's updated info. So, I'm going to take a chance and modify the order of the course. This week, we'll be starting our Content Revamp series of workshops. I usually have that at the end. It's a 3-part series where I help you:  Identify what types of changes to makeEasily get a list of all your content and ways to prioritize it for changesActually make those changes in a way that makes Google happy instead of confused or upset with you Guteneberg Ninja Course Closing to New Purchase and Renewals This Summer Quick reminder that the Gutenberg Ninja course, as it is currently delivered, will no longer accept new purchases or renewals come late June. The subscription is for 6 months, so everyone who did purchase or renew prior to that cutoff date will retain access through the end of their term. I may bring a course back under that name later as a limited time workshop or such, and the focus will likely be on the bare bones basics, and then on how to build landing pages and/or tweak full page Block Patterns. So, if you are planning to switch to Gutenberg and you want a full course on it, now is the time to get in, as you'll also get updated info from the next 2 WordPress updates of 6.0 and 6.1,

Creating a consistent movement practice, for some, is a huge behavioural change. And behavioural change is not easy. If you've ever tried to quit a habit or create a new one in the past, then you'll understand what I'm talking about.  It takes a lot of practice, a lot of focus and a lot of mental strength.Willpower is the tool we often rely upon when trying to make a habit change, and is defined as the ability to resist short-term gratification in pursuit of long-term goals or objectives. In the fitness industry willpower can look like resisting the desire to curl up on the couch and watch netflix to go to the gym.  Or sacrificing our sunday morning sleep in time to get up and go for a run.  Or missing out on date night to have a date with our personal trainer… all with the intention that the long term gains will be worth the short term sacrifices. In my experience as a trainer, I've seen countless clients try employing willpower in hopes that they'll start to feel more motivated and eventually create a consistent exercise habit that they enjoy.  But the willpower always seems to run out before the habit is formed. So is it an issue of not enough mental strength or is there something else going on?  The research would indicate there's definitely more to it.  Tune into learn how mental strength is not the key to behavioral change when it comes to movement and how relying on willpower is affecting your motivation and what you can focus on instead. What you'll learn by listening:How people find themselves on the start-stop cycle with movementWhy willpower runs out and what happens to our motivation when it doesHow toxic fitness culture makes us believe that we need willpower in the first placeHow to identify what you really want and how to set yourself up for success without relying on mental strengthResearch Cited:https://www.apa.org/topics/personality/willpower“Willpower Doesn't Work”; Hardy, Benjamin, 2018“Ego Depletion: Is the Active Self a Limited Resource?” Roy E Baumeister, Ellen Bratslavsky, Mark Muraven, and Dianne M. Charles’s revelation about music while studying in Vienna really hit me as something that I’d been hearing all over but have had trouble applying: Music is about Art, not Correctness. I notice it in my preparation for a workshop, trying to think of everything that the teacher could think of and forgetting that we’re creating expression with what we do. Have you heard of birth story medicine? Today's guest, Amelia Kriss, is a therapist who helps parents work through unresolved issues connected to the experience of giving birth. Not everyone will necessarily need to work through their delivery narrative with someone else. But for those who experience trauma it can be a helpful tool. When people are unhappy with their birth it's generally not because of the specific course it took but rather because they hadn't anticipated the possibility of it deviating from what they envisioned. Even if you're sure of the birth you want, it's important to explore all possibilities. You can't control birth so the best thing you can do is educate yourself so you can be prepared. In this Episode, You'll Learn About:Why it's important to process your birth storyWhat a drama therapist doesHow to balance processing your birth story while staying in the present momentWhat you can do during your pregnancy to help shape your birth story to be more positiveHow our narratives about our birth stories affects us in the long termHow your opinion of your birth story can affect your opinion of yourselfWhat the most common reasons are that people seek counseling for their birthWhy it's important to acknowledge that not everything about parenting is great--Full website notes: drnicolerankins.com/episode221Check out The Birth Preparation CourseRegister for the class How to Create a Birth Plan the Right WayOur Sponsors:* Check out ByHeart and use my code DRNICOLE for 10% off your first order! - https://byheart.com/podcast* Check out Mabbly : https://lactationnetwork.com/* Check out Warner Bros: https://www.warnerbros.com/movies/the-color-purpleAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
