Dr. Harlan Levine began his career practicing internal medicine but soon moved into business leadership roles at national healthcare organizations to help improve the dysfunction with payer-provider relationships that he experienced firsthand as a physician. At United Health Group, Dr. Levine joined as clinical lead of the team that launched Optum, where he subsequently served as chief medical officer for more than six years. He also led the health management practice at Towers Watson and served as executive vice president of comprehensive health solutions at WellPoint, among other roles. In 2013, Dr. Levine joined City of Hope, one of the country's largest and most advanced cancer research and treatment organizations. City of Hope's uniquely integrated model spans cancer care, research and development, academics and training, and a broad philanthropy program that powers its work. City of Hope's growing national system includes its Los Angeles campus, a network of clinical care locations across Southern California, a new cancer center in Orange County, California, and cancer treatment centers and outpatient facilities in the Atlanta, Chicago and Phoenix areas. In addition to currently serving as president of health innovation and policy at City of Hope, Dr. Levine is also chair of the board of AccessHope. A spinout from City of Hope, AccessHope partners with the nation's most prestigious cancer research centers to help make leading-edge cancer care available to all, regardless of geographical location.Dr. Levine joined Keith Figlioli for the second episode of a Healthcare is Hard series exploring opportunities in oncology. Some of the topics they discussed include:Community practice vs. academic medical centers. Delivering personalized care and giving patients access to cutting-edge treatment is equally important, yet historically difficult to balance. In the first episode of this series, Dr. Stephen Schleicher from Tennessee Oncology shared how one of the nation's most successful community oncology practices is tackling the challenge. In this episode, Dr. Levine discussed City of Hope's model of putting academic research at the center and connecting it with community practices. He described how City of Hope is changing the direction of cancer care – not just delivering it – by giving patients faster access to emerging science.Defining value in oncology. Dr. Levine calls himself an outlier when it comes to value-based care in oncology because he thinks the industry missed a critical first step – defining what the term means. In most circumstances, discussions around value are centered around reducing cost. But Dr. Levine points out that a cancer patient defines value very differently. They define it as survival. They think about whether or not they returned to normal functionality in normal life, and what their experience was through the entire treatment process. He says the industry needs to recognize and customize models for these unique aspects of cancer care before the term VBC should be used in oncology.AI in oncology. Dr. Levine shared his outlook for the many ways artificial intelligence will change oncology – from drug discovery to care delivery. He believes AI will completely disrupt the approach to cancer care and that the revolution will happen quickly – not in seven to 10 years, but in three to five. He talked about the ways he sees AI changing how doctors deliver care, and why he's even more optimistic about its ability to accelerate research. To hear Dr. Levine and Keith discuss these topics and more, listen to this episode of Healthcare is Hard: A Podcast for Insiders.

In 1965, a mail-order veterinary supplies business named UPCO was founded in San Diego, California. By 1979, it became Petco, and in 1980, the first Petco store located outside of California opened in Tigard, Oregon. Petco's significant growth began in the late 1980s after acquiring two pet supply chains, WellPoint and the Pet Department. The purchase not only expanded the footprint of the company but more than tripled the brand's store number from 40 to 130. In the early 1990s, Petco opened its first East Coast stores, and by 2001, Petco.com was launched. In 2013, the company opened its first Petco stores in Mexico, with one in Mexico City and another one in Guadalajara.  Today, Petco is a successful pet health and wellness company, reflecting nearly six decades of providing thoughtful customer service to “pet parents” and their beloved pets. The brand has created an environment in which customer loyalty is built through the emotional connections nurtured by in-store employees.     Mark Johnson, CEO of Loyalty360, spoke with Justin Tichy, Chief Operating Officer for Petco, about growing into a health and wellness company, building emotional loyalty with pet parents, and fostering an environment of engaged employees.

What happens next in the fifth stage, or Fifth Paradigm as he puts it, will not be an evolution, but a revolution. Almost everything about how marketing is done today, including the very notion of a brand itself, will require a complete re-imagination. Raja shares the forward-thinking ways all businesses must rethink their entire marketing landscape to remain relevant and be successful.    WHAT  I  LOVE  MOST… Raja's assertion that trust will be one of the biggest differentiators between brands, and that the key to trust will be to demonstrate your purpose and belief in it, and then boldly and consistently act with purpose to earn that trust!    Running time: 33:47      Subscribe on iTunes   Find Tiffani on Social:   Facebook   Twitter   LinkedIn   Instagram      Find Raja Online:   LinkedIn   Twitter  Instagram     Raja's Book: Quantum Marketing

In this episode, we sat down with Brad Fluegel, lecturer at the Wharton School’s Health Care Management program and former Senior Vice President and Chief Healthcare Commercial Market Development Officer for Walgreens. Before that, he was the Executive Vice President and Chief Strategy and External Affairs Officer for Wellpoint, now Anthem, and Senior Vice President of National Accounts and Vice President of Enterprise Strategy at Aetna. What we discussed: Consumer behavior shifting to online purchasing combined with excess retail space is driving retailers such as Walmart and CVS to explore opportunities to leverage consumer familiarity with their brands to expand their presence in the growing healthcare industry. Retailers, providers, and payers are exploring the tradeoffs of different models for expanding into healthcare, from partnering to investing to build out independent outpatient health centers. Collaboration amongst payers, providers, and retailers may drive cost and care benefits for consumers while increasing health equity amongst disadvantaged populations. Near-term policy changes on allowing lower level healthcare practitioners to administer care currently dispensed by doctors as well as insurers considering maintaining pay parity for in-person and remote services should persist after COVID.

Raja served as Chief Transformation Officer of the health insurance firm Anthem (formerly WellPoint). WHAT  I  LOVE  MOST… Raja’s assertion that trust will be one of the biggest differentiators between brands, and that the key to trust will be to demonstrate your purpose and belief in it, and then boldly and consistently act with purpose to earn that trust!    Running time: 33:47     Subscribe on iTunes     Find Tiffani on social:   Facebook   Twitter   LinkedIn   Instagram      Find Raja online:   LinkedIn   Twitter  Instagram     Quantum Marketing Book

Bill Myers Inspires  19 States along with numerous cities and counties in America have declared Racism as a public health crisis. How does racism affect public health? Why is racism now a public health crisis? Has racism always been a public health crisis? Dr. Woody Myers is the 2020 candidate for Governor of Indiana. A third-generation Hoosier, he is also a physician, former Indiana State Health Commissioner, business owner, husband, father, and grandfather. An Indianapolis native, Woody is a proud product of Indianapolis public schools and a graduate of Shortridge High School. He completed his undergraduate studies at Stanford University and went on to earn his medical degree from Harvard University at age 23 and a Master of Business Administration from Stanford University. Throughout his remarkable career, Woody addressed important problems with every organization he has led, generating real results and leaving each of them stronger and ready for the challenges ahead. Early in his medical career he worked as an emergency room physician and teacher at the Indiana University School of Medicine. As a young doctor, he saw first-hand the impact that disparity of income has on health outcomes. Patients with the best health insurance often received the best health care, while others did not and has spent his career fighting to change it. At the age of 30, Woody was the youngest to serve as Indiana State Health Commissioner and held his appointment under both Democratic (Evan Bayh) and Republican (Bob Orr) administrations. As Health Commissioner, Woody effectively led over 2,800 employees, oversaw five state institutions and worked every day to improve maternal and child health, chronic disease control, childhood immunization, and preventive health care services. During his tenure, Woody helped make Indiana a leader in AIDS education and gained national recognition when he fought to keep Ryan White – a teenager with AIDS – in school when his school district banned him following his diagnosis. In addition to being a doctor, Woody is a small business owner who has advised nonprofits and large health care companies on improving their products and services for the benefit of patients. Over his career, Woody served as the medical director for Indiana's largest health care company, and as chief health care officer for Ford Motor Company – where he worked with union officials to develop safety programs and high-quality, comprehensive health care benefits. Under Woody's leadership as the chief medical officer at WellPoint, Inc. he led the nation in measuring and improving the quality of health care for workers and their families. As a nationally recognized and accomplished leader in public health, Woody is uniquely qualified to lead Indiana in its fight to improve access to affordable, quality health care and to reduce prescription drug costs. Woody lives in Indianapolis with his wife Stacy. Together, they have five children and two grandchildren. Join Woody to make a brighter future for all Indiana.   claudia@drwoodymyers.com. https://drwoodymyers.com   ~ More About Bill Myers Inspires ~  Emmy Award-winning actor Bill Myers is an accomplished actor, jazz musician, filmmaker, writer, educator, and speaker. After 5 weeks of trial, a New Jersey Superior Court jury returned what is believed to be one of the largest Federal Employers Liability Act verdicts in the country for pulmonary fibrosis. Fuccilli's widow, Catherine, was awarded $19.2 million, including $4.1 million in pre-death pain and suffering and $15.1 million for his wrongful death.     Click Here to Read/Download the Complete Trial Documents     Guest Bio:   NJ medical malpractice lawyer, Barry R. In its quest to transform 70 to 80 percent of its physician practices to a patient-centered medical home (PCMH) over the next three years, WellPoint has adopted a "meet the practices where they are" philosophy, reports Julie Schilz, director of care delivery transformation for WellPoint. Each practice is at a different place in the transformation effort and requires specialized supports, she adds. Smoothing the transformation rollout is the simultaneous participation of 500 WellPoint practices in CMS's Comprehensive Primary Care (CPC) program, whose goals dovetail with key PCMH principles --- as though WellPoint had another partner in its transformation initiative, Schilz notes. Just as important as practice support is transparency with health plan members, Schilz adds, especially when it comes to explaining the concept of the medical home neighborhood --- where care coordination is a collaboration between primary care and the specialist. Ms. Schilz shared the key features of WellPoint's transformation initiative, including results from its pilot program that have led to a system-wide rollout, during an October 24, 2013 webinar, "Aligning Value-Based Reimbursement with Physician Practice Transformation."

I'll get him him back on track next week by remembering my timer. This week, the Watson supercomputer goes to work for Wellpoint, Michael Arrington out at TechCrunch, the Tweet button is on three million sites and counting, and a local Austin plug for the coming Austin City Limits Music Festival.

Hackers turned to Twitter to wreak havoc during preparations for the 9/11 ceremonies this weekend.  They allegedly hacked into the NBC News account and posted false messages about a new attack on New York’s ground zero. It beat out some of the top thinkers in the world at Jeopardy.  Now, IBM’s Watson computer has a pretty neat job to add to its resume.   The company will work with WellPoint to bring Watson technology to the healthcare sector. The cyber world isn’t just about hacking into other people’s computers and shutting down networks.  It can actually be used for very good causes like finding a long lost son.  Thanks to Facebook, Kattia Liebers was reunited with her 17 –year- old son after he was taken from her 12 years ago. Also, make sure you check out the job of the day!

Did you make more money in 2009 than in any other year of your life? I doubt it! In these financial times, most American's would have to say, "No." Most companies had problems in 2009, and some large corporations and banks even had to be bailed out by the government. Well, in today's podcast I present information from an article that came across my computer that shows how 4 out of the 5 major health insurance companies made more money in 2009 than the year before. The one company that did not make more money still profited quite nicely. It seems clear to me that these companies are not out to protect the public's needs. They sell themselves as being there to help the public, but, in reality they are like any other company that is oriented toward making a profit for their stock holders and CEO's. Regardless of your position on the question of universal health insurance in America, this information should make you question if health insurance companies need to be better regulated and whether these companies need to be investigated for their practices. Listen and you decide.

Lee Aase, Mayo clinic's manager of national media and new media is a self-described borderline Baby Boomer/GenX-er charged with tapping new media channels such as podcasts and streaming video to deliver Mayo's health information to increasingly younger consumers. Experience has shown that it takes a life event such as the birth of a child or a parent's illness to get young people thinking about health coverage and care. But sometimes an emergency can be a defining moment. When an uninsured family member suddenly took ill, Lee pressed his organization's newly launched cell phone health tool into action and averted a costly ER visit.
