Today, I have the great pleasure of inviting one of my dear friends from when I was in the legislature. Shannon Anderson is an attorney who specializes in public advocacy and risk management. Her dog Neely, though, could care less about all of that. Shannon keeps a steady supply of wholesome treats on hand, and is committed not only to regular walks but adventure walks and, most importantly, has arranged for important therapy work opportunities. Neely with her handler Shannon has been recognized as an angel dog at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in Nebraska, and Shannon has volunteered with him since 2014 and is retiring this summer. Neely will also share with you that, as a standard poodle, she has found her human to be at times a bit yippy and hyper but she will keep her nonetheless. Support the Show.
The transformative power of therapy animals with Mary Margaret Callahan of Pet Partners We pet guardians see our companion animals as more than just animals, creatures with four legs roaming around our homes or yards, waiting for their next dinner. Many of us see them as family … some of us, as our children. Still more of us look at them as vital sources of therapy and emotional support. Our best fur friends – or hairless or scaled, whichever you choose – become vital sources of therapy and emotional support. They give us comfort, help us reduce stress and provide us with a sense of stability and responsibility. A small group of pet guardians take their animals' secret powers and share them with others. Today's guest is Mary Margaret Callahan, the chief mission officer at Pet Partners, an organization dedicated to improving human health and wellbeing through the power of therapy animals. The nine different species Pet Partners registers bring joy, comfort and healing to countless individuals in hospitals, schools, senior living facilities and many other environments. Taylor has always loved animals. She grew up with dogs and horses but has always loved farm animals. Her favorite is pigs. She has struggled with chronic illness for the majority of her life and one of her main symptoms is very bad insomnia due to pain. She would try to find things to do at night to distract herself from the pain. SHe would always find herself watching any kind of pig video on YouTube and it would make her laugh. It was the best distraction for what she was going through. She wanted a pig from a pretty young age with what she was going through but her parents were not very sure. She was in the thick of her chronic illness about 5 years ago and that felt like the right time to add a pig to her family. Taylor tells us that she has started to get her life back. She went from bedrest to taking care of her farm and horseback riding so she is starting to improve. Taylor tells us how she went about getting a pig as a pet. She did a ton of research and found out that pigs are well suited for someone with a chronic illness because they do not have the same needs as a dog does. She was able to finally get a pig and that ended up being exactly what she needed. She named her pig Bubbles. For the first 2 years of having Bubbles she was bedridden so they did everything together. It was a little bit of an adjustment when she started to get healthier and their lives together changed a bit. Bubbles is certified as an emotional support pig and also as a therapy pig. He was even able to go with her for her stays in the hospital. Taylor tells us a few of the struggles she has had with Bubbles and what they have overcome together. We also learn about life on her farm and the different animals that she has. She tells us how Bubbles interacts with the other animals. Taylor explains how her therapy program started and what is involved with that business. She shares with us the different forms of therapy her animals provide and a few personal stories of how she has been able to use her animals to help others through whatever they are battling. Taylors one piece of advice for someone wanting to get a pet pig is to make sure that they are ready to make this commitment for the pig's life. Do your research and realize that you will have this pig that you need to care for through their entire life. I'm sure many of us have heard of dogs being brought into colleges to help reduce anxiety during finals, but never saw them ourselves. Well today you're going to hear all about these special Therapy Animals. My guest today is Larry Grogan. Sixty-eight percent of American households include at least one pet, and within those homes where domestic violence or child abuse occur, eighty-eight percent also include animal abuse. Animals and pets are the silent victims of abuse, who cannot reach out for help and have no lifeline of support. Author, attorney and animal advocate Allie Phillips is changing that through programs that shelter pets alongside domestic violence survivors in agencies around the world. A former child abuse and domestic violence prosecutor, Allie Phillips has developed programs including Sheltering Animals & Families Together (SAF-T)® and Therapy Animals Supporting Kids (TASK) to safeguard animals from further abuse as well as support the healing of trauma for their human companions.

In this episode Joanne Williams,LCSW: Explains how Emotional Support Animals or ESAs are one of the simplest ways to lower anxiety, I have seen in my 30 years as a therapist and will explain why. In part 2 Podcast #12 an ESA client, will explain how her ESA helps her AND 10 Benefits of having an ESA. Summary of today’s podcast. This Podcast clarifies the difference between Emotional Support Animal, Therapy Animals, Psychiatric Service Dogs and Service Dogs. She confronts some of the misunderstandings about ESA’s head on, including Misinformation in the media, Misinformation from the airlines, Online certificate scams and if you should get an ESA letter from a therapist or from your doctor. We will answer most frequently asked question about ESAs. Included is a resource page on low cost Veterinary care, since in this global pandemic economic issues are increasing. I wanted to research and share some ways to help with costs around our furry family members. I had been a Mental Health professional for 20 years and didn’t know about these 2 federal laws around ESAs that has been around for almost 50 years. I did my research and found it to be true. Now, For the last 7 years I have specialized in ESA certification. This is the main reason we are sharing this information in a podcast, so you will understand the laws and how to qualify. The ESA does need to provide help with a daily functioning like sleep, concentration, or motivate the client to socialize easier, because they have the animal. There is a psychological evaluation to see how their animal helps them with a daily functioning AND to find a psychological diagnosis The ESA evaluation needs to be with a Licensed MH professional to find these 3 qualifiers before a letter is issued certifying a True ESA. Once they qualify, a letter is sent certifying that they have meet the 2 laws that govern ESA to travel by plane and to give to their property manager to live in no pet housing, without pet rents or deposits. Just having a vest on or a certificate that is made to put on the wall or “registering as an ESA” online does not make a true certified ESA. The most frequently asked question, on the internet or on FB or when a person calls us is: How do I qualify for any ESA? There are 3 things that the 2 laws require. The 2 laws that govern ESA are the Fair Housing Act FHA The Air Carriers Access Act, for airlines to allow service and ESA animals to fly without discrimination. They can’t charge fees or restrictions on weight breeds of animals, except for reptiles, spiders or exotic animals were never allowed to be on board. The airlines instituted forms to be completed before bringing an ESA, that has made obstacles to bring your ESA. In August 2019, the DOT clarified what the airlines could and could not do “Research say people who own dogs have a 24% lower risk of death than people who don’t own dogs. This is in general population, not for the most vulnerable populations with traumas of family history of mental illness. There are 3 things you can do today to help. Be more thoughtful or less judgmental of someone with an animal on the plane. Suggest to a Veterans group or Police department that they may be interested in hearing more about how an animal in their precinct might help the overall calmness in the environment. Smile at one person today and think a nice thought towards them. Have you ever looked deep into the eyes of an animal and felt entirely known? Often the connections we share with non human animals represent our safest and most reliable relationships, with unique and profound opportunities for healing through periods of hardship. This is the focus today with my guests Philip Tedeschi and Molly Jenkins, from the University of Denver, Graduate School of Social Work, Institute for Human Animal Connection (IHAC). Their newest book, Transforming Trauma, examines how our relationships with animals can help build resiliency and transform the healing of trauma. Techeschi and Jenkins have produced the go to sourcebook on the role of animal assisted interventions for children and adults coping with the debilitating effects of psychological trauma as well as a deep consideration for how we can respect animals participation in trauma recovery practices and establish ethical standards to ensure the well being of therapy, companion and trauma recovery animals.

Do you know the difference between a therapy animal and a service animal? Most people use these two terms interchangeably, but they are actually two very different things. What types of animals can be therapy animals? What tasks do they perform, and what environments can they work in? In this week’s episode, I’m speaking with Elisabeth Van Every, the Communications and Outreach Coordinator for Pet Partners. Pet Partners is the nation’s largest and most prestigious nonprofit organization that registers handlers of therapy animals.

Arguably the biggest celebrity in the llama world isRojo the Llama, a charming therapy animal from Mtn Peaks Therapy Llamas & Alpacas that has completed over 800 therapy visits throughout the Portland, OR and Vancouver, WA area since being certified 7 years ago. Attendees of Autism Empowerment's Easter Egg Hunt for Acceptance of All Abilities in April 2014 lined up for the chance to share kisses, carrots and hugs.According to Rojo's Facebook page, "I've always been a little weird because I LOVE being around people! That's why my owners decided to get me certified in 2007 through the DoveLewis Animal-Assisted Therapy Program in Portland, OR. My roommate, Smokey also passed his certification with flying colors, and now we also have a rescued llama named Beni, and three very sweet alpacas named Napoleon, Andre, and Jean-Pierre at our place that also do therapy visitation. We leave the farm at least 3 - 5 times every week to visit kids with special needs and old folks in retirement homes. We also get to do lots of fun parties and PR events throughout the year down in the "big city" of Portland - I love it when everybody freaks out when they see us walking around downtown!"Although Rojo has figured out how to express himself in llama talk and through Facebook, he hasn't quite mastered the art of the radio interview. Today we are delighted to welcome Lori Gregory, President of Mtn Peaks Therapy Llamas & Alpacas to share the history behind their nonprofit organization, anecdotes about their activities and insight regarding what makes therapy animals like Rojo, Smokey, Napoleon and friends so appealing to children and senior citizens.
