Quigley (2003)Directed By: William Byron HillmanStarring: Gary Busey, Osgood Perkins, Curtis Armstrong, that guy from Blue Lagoon (and "The Pirate Movie")Our Gary Busey month rolls on, and we're really good at picking winners. This time around Busey plays Archie - a VR software developer guy who hates dogs and is mean... or something. He swerves to miss running over a dog (which if he hates dogs why would he care?) and in the process rolls his car over and goes to heaven where he proceeds to get in a fight win an angel and gets sent back to Earth as a dog. Seriously. IMDB describes this as "A despicable person is reincarnated as a dog in order to atone for his life's big mistakes." Religiousness incoming. We Also Talked About:Love on the Spectrum (Netflix)Dark Side of the Ring: Victor Borga - Hellraiser from Helsinki (Amazon)Rad (Amazon)Thrashin' (Amazon)Dark Side of the Ring: Mick Foley - Hell in a Cell (Amazon)Gone Girls (Netflix)I Know What You Did Last Summer (Amazon)Scary Movie (TubiTv)Curtis Armstrong's interview with the AV clubGary Busey's interview about this cinema.Like what you hear here? This week on The Video Store Podcast, we're diving into some adventurous waters with four pirate films you might not have rented yet, but are worth a look. These films span decades, showing how Hollywood has captured the allure of swashbuckling adventures over time. Whether you're a fan of classic Hollywood, musicals, or big-budget ‘90s action, I've picked a lineup that I think captures the spirit of the genre in different ways. Here's what's on this episode:Captain Blood (1935)If you're curious about Errol Flynn's big break, Captain Blood is the film to watch. Directed by Michael Curtiz, who later went on to make Casablanca, this movie was released during the Golden Age of Hollywood and set the standard for pirate films to come. In it, Flynn plays Dr. Peter Blood, an Irish physician turned reluctant pirate, a role that became iconic for him. Olivia de Havilland co-stars, marking the first of eight films they'd appear in together. The movie was actually adapted from Rafael Sabatini's 1922 novel, and what's interesting is that Flynn wasn't the studio's first choice. Warner Bros. originally wanted Robert Donat, but when he turned it down, they took a chance on Flynn, who was then unknown. The film went on to be a hit, and Flynn's career took off from there.Treasure Island (1950) Disney's first fully live-action film was Treasure Island, adapted from Robert Louis Stevenson's novel. This film captures the heart of the classic pirate tale with Bobby Driscoll as Jim Hawkins and Robert Newton as the unforgettable Long John Silver. Newton's portrayal of Silver is what many credit with shaping the “pirate accent” we recognize today, especially that exaggerated “Arrr.” For a lot of people, myself included, this is the definitive version of Treasure Island, so it's a must-watch for anyone wanting a straightforward adaptation of the classic tale. The Pirate Movie (1982)The Pirate Movie is very different from the last two films. It is more of a campy, musical rom-com take on The Pirates of Penzance. If you're looking for a quirky, offbeat experience, this film, starring Kristy McNichol and Christopher Atkins, is definitely that. Though critics weren't fond of it when it was released, it's gained a bit of a cult following since then. One interesting thing about this movie is that it openly riffs on the Gilbert and Sullivan opera it's based on, adding a lot of modern (for the time) references. It's worth a watch if you're into musicals and don't mind a less traditional approach to a pirate story.Cutthroat Island (1995)Last up is Cutthroat Island, an ambitious, big-budget adventure directed by Renny Harlin and starring Geena Davis and Matthew Modine. Known mostly for being a notorious box office bomb, it has gained some appreciation over the years for its impressive stunt work, practical effects, and for putting a female pirate in the lead. Davis plays Morgan Adams, a captain on a quest to find hidden treasure. While the film's financial failure might have overshadowed its merits at the time, there's a lot to admire. It's also one of the last pirate movies before Pirates of the Caribbean would revive the genre nearly a decade later. If you're ready for a bit of pirate escapism, these four movies offer different takes on the genre, from classic Hollywood adventure to musical satire to large-scale nineties action. Listen to the show to hear a little more about each film and why they're worth watching, and maybe even renting, this week. This is a public episode. Hello Sailor! Jason from 'It's Not That Bad' podcast jumps onboard the 'Defend It Yourself' ship to review The Pirate Movie (1982), an Australian musical romantic comedy loosely based on The Pirates of Penzance. "Think Pirates of the Caribbean crossed with YMCA's 'In The Navy', throw a bit of Baywatch in there, a bit of Grease, a bit of Grease 2, the non-shark bits of Jaws and the dreamlike quality of Scrubs and you're about halfway there". My Guest: "It's the show that does its best to defend the unfairly maligned movies, to find the silver linings in the films deemed “less than great”. Every week, host Jason Whissell is joined by a guest to discuss a movie that has been poorly rated by the critics or by the fans" , description from their website: https://notthatbadcast.com/home/ Discussion Points: -Bus stops advertisements. -Taking the context and the time that the film was made into account when watching the film. -The Pirate King and his fantastic lines, played charmingly by Ted Hamilton. -There's a lot to be said for a film that just makes you laugh. -A lot of Jason's examples go completely over Sean's head. -Sean drops Casualty (1986-Present) trivia but gets his Grease (1978) trivia desperately wrong. -Sean gets distracted by The Batman (2022) once Jason brings it up. It's been a while. -Jason and Sean discuss World War Z (2013). -Sean ironically discusses editing. Raised Questions: -Do you believe film critics? -Did they get past introductions in the 80's? -Where do the Ninjas turn up? -How bad does this film look on paper? -This film got how many many Razzie nominations? -What does Jason think of the musical score, did it damage the film? -The self-awareness of the film? -What do critics want? -Are films with a long runtime necessary? -Is this film a perfect 'bad day' film? Random Recommendations: -Repo The Genetic Opera (2008). -House of Wax (2005). -Bottom (TV Series 1991-1995). -The Pope's Exorcist (2023). -Clue (1985). Today's episode features another returning guest. This week Aerin Moriarty comes back on the pod to talk about a mostly forgotten parody movie of the late 80s. This week we are talking The Pirate Movie. While it most certainly isn't Mel Brooks, The Pirate Movie is a film that seems to have a loving fan base, and Aerin shares that love. While serving as a comedic take on Pirates of Penzance, it's also a pretty forward thinking movie for it's time. Also there are Star Wars references. Reason #13 everyone is staring: We (mostly O'Dell) have very fond memories surrounding some random movies from the 80s. We start with Grease 2, and then go on to The All-nighter, The Pirate Movie, A Night in Heaven, Xanadu, and Roller Boogie. Phillip starts the show by making some corrections from this and previous shows. Then he talks about what he has been watching at home and the theaters. Then he gets into the prerecorded show. Phillip and Brandt start by talking about; Paris, Texas, Zorro the Gay Blade, The Legend of the Lone Ranger, Love at First Bite, The Pirate Movie, The Apple Dumpling Gang, Superfuzz, and Lone Wolf McQuade. Then Phillip talks about the Zorro the Gay Blade and Stripes soundtrack. They then talk about Dunkirk, their love of 1941, Kubrick and Nolan being the same kind of film makers (maybe), Phillip reminds Brandt about the documentary on Netflix called The Filmworker, they then discuss their favorite Christopher Nolan scenes. Then talk about Inception, Shudder Island, and The Sixth Sense. They talk about what a great actor and director Kenneth Branagh is (Dead Again, Murder on the Orient Express, Hamlet, and Henry V). Then it's time for Enemy at the Gates. They talk about accents in the film, which leads Phillip to tell a story about K-19 Widowmaker. Brandt talks about WWII propaganda and they both agree on Kingdom of Heaven the Director's Cut being a great film. Then they dive into The Big Red One. Brandt talks about how much better the Reconstruction version is. Phillip talks about how great the director's cuts of Aliens and Alien 3 are. Phillip and Brandt talk about the reality of war and the realism of the movie. Then they discuss Sam Fuller's other work. They talk about a documentary on Sam Fuller that they both saw that made them dive deep into Sam Fuller. The documentary was called Sam Fuller, The Typewriter, the Rife, and the movie camera. (It's on Youtube.) Then Phillip talks about Sam Fuller's I Shot Jesse James, which leads Brandt into talking about The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. Phillip then talks about 2 more Sam Fuller movies; Pick Up On South Street and Fixed Bayonets. It's a long show, but it is full of movie talk. write us an email at mycelluloidheart@gmail.com Hope you enjoy.
