Today on another encore edition of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to Susannah Mars, daughter of actor and comedian Kenneth Mars. Of course you know Kenneth Mars from his many film roles including Young Frankenstein, What's Up Doc, The Producers, Radio Days & The Parallex View and many more classic films. What you may not know and we learn from talking to Susannah was that her grandfather was a comic and radio personality named Sonny Mars who released one very tidy LP & that later in life, her father became known for voice over work in tons of animated movies and shows, none bigger than that as King Trident in Disney's The Little Mermaid.  Susannah also lets us in on what it was like growing up with her cerebral but wacky father. We hear about his lunches with fellow actors and comedians like The Partridge Family's Dave Madden which then somehow led us to reach out to another guest, Denise Gaultier after hearing about her father's somewhat ribald drawings he made for Susannah at those lunches. We also hear about Susannah's singing career, her documentary film, Mourning Has Broken & how she starred in an ABC after school special with Kristy McNichol & so much more. There is so much love and respect and genuine familial memories about growing up with a father it's hard not to empathize with her years after his passing. He made funny voices, she got to watch her dad on stage in St. louis at the Muny Theater and how the cult comedy show Fernwood 2 Night still connects with her & her dads fans. Please take a listen to the latest episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast and enjoy our chat with Susannah Mars. Everyone has a story.

This week on The Video Store Podcast, we're diving into some adventurous waters with four pirate films you might not have rented yet, but are worth a look. These films span decades, showing how Hollywood has captured the allure of swashbuckling adventures over time. Whether you're a fan of classic Hollywood, musicals, or big-budget ‘90s action, I've picked a lineup that I think captures the spirit of the genre in different ways. Here's what's on this episode:Captain Blood (1935)If you're curious about Errol Flynn's big break, Captain Blood is the film to watch. Directed by Michael Curtiz, who later went on to make Casablanca, this movie was released during the Golden Age of Hollywood and set the standard for pirate films to come. In it, Flynn plays Dr. Peter Blood, an Irish physician turned reluctant pirate, a role that became iconic for him. Olivia de Havilland co-stars, marking the first of eight films they'd appear in together. The movie was actually adapted from Rafael Sabatini's 1922 novel, and what's interesting is that Flynn wasn't the studio's first choice. Warner Bros. originally wanted Robert Donat, but when he turned it down, they took a chance on Flynn, who was then unknown. The film went on to be a hit, and Flynn's career took off from there.Treasure Island (1950) Disney's first fully live-action film was Treasure Island, adapted from Robert Louis Stevenson's novel. This film captures the heart of the classic pirate tale with Bobby Driscoll as Jim Hawkins and Robert Newton as the unforgettable Long John Silver. Newton's portrayal of Silver is what many credit with shaping the “pirate accent” we recognize today, especially that exaggerated “Arrr.” For a lot of people, myself included, this is the definitive version of Treasure Island, so it's a must-watch for anyone wanting a straightforward adaptation of the classic tale. The Pirate Movie (1982)The Pirate Movie is very different from the last two films. It is more of a campy, musical rom-com take on The Pirates of Penzance. If you're looking for a quirky, offbeat experience, this film, starring Kristy McNichol and Christopher Atkins, is definitely that. Though critics weren't fond of it when it was released, it's gained a bit of a cult following since then. One interesting thing about this movie is that it openly riffs on the Gilbert and Sullivan opera it's based on, adding a lot of modern (for the time) references. It's worth a watch if you're into musicals and don't mind a less traditional approach to a pirate story.Cutthroat Island (1995)Last up is Cutthroat Island, an ambitious, big-budget adventure directed by Renny Harlin and starring Geena Davis and Matthew Modine. Known mostly for being a notorious box office bomb, it has gained some appreciation over the years for its impressive stunt work, practical effects, and for putting a female pirate in the lead. Davis plays Morgan Adams, a captain on a quest to find hidden treasure. While the film's financial failure might have overshadowed its merits at the time, there's a lot to admire. It's also one of the last pirate movies before Pirates of the Caribbean would revive the genre nearly a decade later. If you're ready for a bit of pirate escapism, these four movies offer different takes on the genre, from classic Hollywood adventure to musical satire to large-scale nineties action. Listen to the show to hear a little more about each film and why they're worth watching, and maybe even renting, this week. This is a public episode. This week, we discuss two films from American director Samuel Fuller. The first is White Dog (1982), a drama/horror film based on Romain Gary's 1970 novel of the same name. The film depicts the struggle of a dog trainer named Keys (Paul Winfield), who is black, trying to retrain a stray dog found by a young actress (Kristy McNichol), that is a "white dog"—a dog trained to make vicious attacks upon, and to kill, any black person. The second is The Big Red One (1980), an epic war film starring Lee Marvin alongside an ensemble supporting cast, including Mark Hamill. Based on Fuller's own experiences as a soldier in World War II, it was produced independently on a low budget, and shot on location in Israel as a cost-saving measure.   Timestamps What we've been watching (00:01:05) – Curb Your Enthusiasm season twelve, Baby Reindeer, Blood Diamond, Paddington 1 & 2, The Gilded Age season two White Dog (00:22:00) The Big Red One (00:51:40) Coin toss (01:16:15)   Links Instagram - @callitfriendopodcast @munnywales @andyjayritchie   Letterboxd – @andycifpod @fat-tits mcmahon   Justwatch.com – streaming and rental links - https://www.justwatch.com

A story revovling around two fifteen year-old girls competing to see who will be the first to lose their v card while at a summer camp could only happen in a movie from 1980.  These kids smoke in broad daylight, they swear, they steal school buses and rip entire prophylactic machines off gas station bathroom walls. This movie is the anti "Camp Rock." We already knew Kristy and Tatum had that andogynous quality about them both that made boys and girls across America feel some tyoe of way, but in struts a teenage Matt Dillon and an entire generation of kids were never the same.  That hair, those cutoffs, that bad attitude! Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast we are talking to Susannah Mars, daughter of the amazing actor/comedian Kenneth Mars. We spoke to Susannah about growing up with the man who portrayed the outrageous Nazi playwright Franz Liebkind in The Producers as well as Inspector Kemp in Young Frankenstein. Of course that means we talk about Mel Brooks but it also means we talk about everything from Chicago radio/TV personality Sonny Mars who was Kenneth's step father, additional Mars films like The Parallax View & What's Up, Doc? & hanging out with dad's friends Dick Gautier (Hymie from Get Smart) and Dave Madden of The Partridge Family. Susannah also talks to us about her own career as a performer, actress and her upcoming documentary “Mourning Has Broken”, her father's amazing accents which may or may not be used In LA restaurants, his penchant for elaborate gags at lunch as well as his stage career which frankly we knew too little about. It was wonderful talking to Susannah because not only did she have some great tales about being on the set of Young Frankenstein and being in the seats at The Muny in St; Louis, but she regales us with stories about appearing in an ABC After School Special with Kristy McNichol, her small role in the Jodie Foster version of Freaky Friday and her obvious bond she and her dad shared. She really brings his wild but loving personality to life in our interview. So if the cult TV show Fernwood 2 Night, meeting Lucille Ball on the Universal lot or The Playboy Club circuit mean anything to you, you should take a listen to this episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast. Take a listen.

The Video Archives Podcast with Quentin Tarantino and Roger Avary

Quentin & Roger join LAPD's Vice Squad with Peter Hyams' Busting! Starring Elliott Gould & Robert Blake, these two LA vice cops find themselves up against corrupt superiors when they try to bring a crime boss to justice. The duo discuss where Busting fits into Hyams' career, how the film walks the line, and how the action sequences predate 80s Hong Kong cinema. Next up, the bet is on in Little Darlings. Two fifteen year old girls from different walks of life compete to see who can lose their virginity first at summer camp. Tatum O'Neal and Kristy McNichol star in an unexpectedly realistic portrayal of female youth in the 1980s. We'll explore what it means for a girl to become a woman, the anxieties of keeping up with your peers, and the beautiful Paramount Home Video box. Lastly, there's more to do than ski in the Swiss Alps, especially when it comes to the psychosexual romp Julia. Roger & Quentin dive headfirst into the tale of a sexually frustrated young man named Patrick whose problems come to a head on his Swiss vacation. Learn more about this week's films, get Video Archives merch and more at videoarchivespodcast.com. Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast we are talking to Hollye Dexter. Now, by strictest semantics, Hollye isn't a child of a celebrity. But everyone has a story, right? And Hollye's story is a unique one that straddles two distinct worlds – that of celebrity and that of being your typical LA kid growing up in the seventies. Her step-siblings growing up were Kristy McNichol and Jimmy McNichol via her mother's marriage to a man nicknamed Bullet. Yes, Bullet. And who do you think introduced Bullet to Hollye's mother? None other than Grizzly Adams himself, Uncle Dan Haggerty. We talk to Hollye about her time growing up with her cousins in the Haggerty home which is described as both magical and something out of Harry Potter. Owls, wolves and even a lion named Samson were regulars around in the house. Friends were bikers, celebrities,  stunt people and circus performers – and this was before The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams that propelled Uncle Dan to stardom. It went from pickup trucks in Sun Valley, to Ferrari's in Malibu very quick. We also learn about Hollye's time as a backup singer for the likes of Dionne Warwick, Blake Shelton, Stephen Bishop and Don Felder, why she became an author which begat the book Fire Season, her political activism and her harrowing tale of literally losing everything at age 30. You won't believe this story when you hear it, I can promise you. This episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast is both a laugher and a crier. And yes,  Everyone has a story.

You kids today with your Riverdales and your Marvel Universes . . . Back in the 80s, our formative years were shaped by sex-romp versions of hundred-year-old comedy operas starring very, very tan men and Golden Razzie-Award nominee Kristy McNichol. As indicated by the title, this is THE Pirate Movie, and no one has ever made another pirate movie before or since. So, nyah.

As more and more skeevy stories about middle-age men who dated (and inevitably raped) young teens come out, you gotta wonder: how did they ever think this was okay (in fact, failed Senatorial candidate Roy Moore actually still says it was okay). While it's NOT OKAY, there was definitely a message being pushed in pop culture that's evident in the movies of the '80s that teen girls were obsessed with sex and, in fact, the girls were the predators Take 1980's Little Darlings, starring two of the most famous teen girls of the era, Kristy McNichol and Tatum O'Neal. It's about two 15-year-old campers who bet they can lose their virginity first - and one of them has her heart set on her 30-year-old camp counselor/high school teacher (it's okay to throw up). Film critics Tara McNamara, Gen X, and Riley Roberts, Gen Y, discuss what was going on in the '80s, how this film was such a massive success at the time, and how the messages the film sent impact society today.

In the tenth episode of Film Freaks Forever!, our hosts Mark Jordan Legan and Phoef Sutton dared to watch and listen to some truly dreadful modern film musicals—so much so that all the wildlife around our place, ran for the hills and have never returned. With so much to choose from, the Film Freaks narrowed it down to four modern film musicals that are truly so bizarre and strange that they'll end up wildly entertaining you and your friends (especially if booze & buds are being passed around, dig?)  Everything from a 20-year-old unknown Olivia Newton-John singing her way through the weird sci-fi musical “Toomorrow” to the Bee Gees and Peter Frampton stinking up great Beatles music in the ill-advised “Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band” to the truly insane and enjoyable “The Apple” (where Satan himself runs the music industry) to “The Pirate Movie,” where Kristy McNichol and Christopher Atkins butcher soft rock ballads in between Gilbert & Sullivan numbers. So prepare your minds and your ears to hear some of the most outlandish and peculiar songs & lyrics ever recorded—plus some "groovy and with it" hippie dialogue that will impress all your cool friends! #90 Kellee Maize and Jimmy McNichol Kellee Maize is a sensation on the internet.  This white female rapper, singer, and song writer has over 9 million downloads, and continues to grow that number daily.  Maize is the number one person that pops up in your browser when you search for female rappers, and is about to release her 7th album since 2008.  This one woman powerhouse is far more than just her title though. In 2006 Maize started her own events, and marketing company called Nakturnal . Since then she has become a live speaker, advising startup companies in the music industry, and Huffington Post contributor on how to make music affordably.  Maize is also an activist, using her music to speak out for women's rights, and her personal political views.  Her music parody "Make Love Not Trump" , is a personal favorite of mine. Oh, and I forgot to mention, the icing on the cake is, she is also from Pittsburgh. Maize's rise to success was not an easy one, and I came upon finding this talented lady, because of a video that popped up on my browser.  Jimmy McNichol's Close- Knit Family and The Daughter Her Never Knew He Had.  I knew of McNichol's from my mom, and from my childhood.  He was "The face you see everywhere", youngest producer at 17, childhood actor, singer, and dancer. Brother of Kristy McNichol, Jimmy, and his sister were the most sought after Hollywood duo of their time. McNichol went on to star in various productions such as Little House On The Prairie, and was the highest paid TV actor on California Fever.   While watching this video, I couldn't believe the story that brought these two ridiculously talented father and daughter together.  When I found out Maize was from Pittsburgh, and heard her awesome song off her new album "Crown", I had to meet her to hear her story, and this path she created herself as a successful artist, business woman, and straight up courageous human being to take the journey to find her father. I have given too much away already.  What I haven't given away is Maize telling you the story in her own words, and the phone call we surprised Jimmy with on the show.  You will hear about how these two found each other, and are now creating projects together such as starring on Decker: Unsealed.  Also what they have planned for the future, and  I can tell you, it is going to be a lot.  Tune in to hear the whole story on Marta On The Move Podcast, and follow Maize on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. In this extra-extended, robot-charged episode, we make with the Mecha! As always, we start with a kidney-pleasing pre-show stretch before powering up our podcasting exoskeletons. How does the Electric Company generate all that energy? Who is the mystery woman William’s parents paid off each week? Why is money so heavy? We answer all of these questions and still have room for Ramen Noodles and water, before we are brought to a sudden halt by the memory-straining case of Kristy McNichol and the Show Note Elves. We continue our dubious guessing about things of which we know nothing by reminiscing about Battle of the Network Stars wherein we consider the athletic capabilities of Gabe Kaplan and celebrate a scandalous Baio/Diller romance. Dubiouser and Dubiouser! William reveals that his wife is having an affair with a dishwasher, which causes us to discover that the cure for sickness is a healthy dose of nursing annoyance. Scott then takes on the mantle of Mister Snake as he greets a newly-identified, mouse-hugging resident to Horn Acres. Turns out Scott has been many former people, from copperhead-leaper to tractor-caster. But wait, there’s more show! Scott finally finds his TV obsession and it’s not what either of us expected. We dive deep into anime, where skirts are raised uncomfortably, the origins of Brony culture is hypothesized, and Subbed vs. Dubbed is debated as 1970s animation co-ops an entire culture. We play the Imaging Game with anime’s version of Game of Thrones and determine that it’s as real as it needs to be. Neal Stephenson has had enough, so it’s on to the thing William did out where the things are. William celebrates progress and rediscovers comic books all in one trip to the data-driven Amazon store, now with extra cables! Thanks, data mining! Then, in hour 200, we finally turn to Music in Rearview. Brian May and friends have something to share, and it’s not good. But hey, we forced his hand, I guess. Old for any age, we endure the iconic 1983 sound of the Starfleet Project. Cheesy, badly-sung cover of a crappy TV show nobody watched? Sign me up! It’s no Triumph in any sense of the word. Finally, there’s Prince, another otherworldly, supposedly immortal artist picked off cruelly by 2016. We pay our respects to an amazing, talented musician who held to a different metric. Please, stop this segment. We don’t want to do it again. After William’s quick 7-Zark-7 flip flop, we tap into the Aldnoah Drive and head back to Terra where there’s always room for some T&A!
