Protein in DietIf you've been to the grocery store lately, it is hard to miss the new diet fad — protein. It is being added to everything from milk to ramen to popcorn to cereal to sports drinks. Last week, Buffalo Wild Wings released a wing-flavored protein-filled espresso martini that they're calling "Espresso Proteini." But what does the science say about how much protein we actually need in our diets? Is this filling a nutritional need or is it just another food craze? The recently-revised food pyramid from the U.S. Health and Human Services Department emphasizes protein, as well as dairy, healthy fats, fruits and vegetables as the largest categories of our diet. Previously, protein was suggested in smaller portions. We'll start Thursday's "Sound of Ideas" by talking protein and other questions about a healthy diet. Guest:- Kristi Artz, M.D., Vice President & Christopher M. and Sara H. Connor Chair in Integrative Health, University Hospitals Connor Whole Health Geauga County Maple FestivalNext in the "Sound of Ideas," we'll switch from protein to another important food group — sugar, specifically maple syrup and the people who produce it. Geauga County is the top maple syrup producer in Ohio and is celebrating its 100th Maple Festival next month. Maple syrup is the focus of this installment of our food series, "The Menu," which is produced in collaboration with Cleveland Magazine, which has featured reporting on maple syrup production as well as the Geauga County Maple Festival. Guests:- Tim Cermak, Maple Syrup Farmer, Sugarbush Creek Farm- Marc Burr, Emcee & Board Member, Geauga County Maple Festival & Owner, Potti & Burr Funeral Homes

How may reviews for Superman movies does the world need? It needs ours and that's about it. Everyone else can go back to Krypton. Yes, we sat down and finally watched James Gunn's Superman[2025]. We figured we didn't want to place it in the list of movies we'd watch when we get around to a theme episode sometime. If you've existed in Western pop culture, you know the basics. Alien from Krypton, many many powers, raised in Kansas, and fights villains. Some differences here are that Papa Kent is alive and both the Kents are lobotomized boomers who can't operate a phone. Louis Lane is obnoxious, maybe that's closer to … Continue reading "Popcorn Pulse 260: Superbunny"

Welcome to SEASON FIVE of Braaaaains!! WHA WHA??? We're kicking things off with the fantastic Kristen Lopez, who is a freelance pop culture journalist and the author of two books: But Have You Read the Book: 52 Literary Gems That Inspired Our Favorite Films, published by TCM and Running Press in 2023, and Popcorn Disabilities: The Highs and Lows of Disabled Representation in the Movies published by Bloomsbury Academic, which we'll be talking about today! As a film critic and disabled person, Kristen Lopez speaks with particular authority on how disability is represented-and too often misrepresented-in movies. Popcorn Disabilities is her impassioned, yet fun and engaging, survey of how Hollywood has dealt with disability over the last century. Over the course of this episode, we talk about little-remembered gems like Tod Browning's Freaks, one of the earliest well-intentioned attempts to show disabled characters as complex, three-dimensional human beings, to a slew of contemporary films, all of which have the power to enlighten, influence, and be used as a tool for social good. Popcorn has somehow earned a reputation as the “healthy” snack, light, harmless, and even heart-friendly.But here's the uncomfortable truth: when you combine modern corn with industrial processing and the wrong oils, that movie-night staple can turn into a metabolic landmine. In this episode, I'm breaking down what's really happening behind the scenes, and why that crunchy bowl may be doing more to your brain and waistline than you realize. If you love a good snack, don't worry — I'll also show you how to enjoy one without paying the price later. On this episode, you'll learn: What's actually hiding inside that bowl of popcorn (0:45)Why nearly all corn products today contain one common ingredient that could be quietly disrupting your metabolism and gut health (1:45)How THESE cooking oils are fueling inflammation, weight gain, and even accelerated aging (6:00)Which new class of lectins could be interfering with your memory, focus, and mental clarity (7:15)What smarter alternative you can reach for when you want that salty, crunchy fix — including the brand I trust for an occasional treat (8:00)Thank you to our sponsors! Which White Cheddar Popcorn is best? This podcast has tackled many different popcorns; microwavable, caramel, orange cheddar, and (according to some on the team) white cheddar. In order to settle this fiery debate some may suggest looking back at past episodes to confirm, but here at Taste Test Dummies we have had all rearview mirrors removed from our company cars, because we only look forward. Despite the civil war brewing, we can all agree that we have not done these exact brands, so let's lower our weapons and choose the best from this week's contenders Be Happy, Garrett, Krackcorn and Sweet Chaos. Please like and subscribe and if you have any suggestions, let us know by tweeting us @tastetestdummies or email us at nickandjohnpodcast@gmail.com. SPOILER! Below is a list of which popcorn corresponds to each numbered bowl it was in: 1. Sweet Chaos 2. Be Happy 3. Garrett 4. Krackcorn
