Join us for this episode with the lovely Krista Hennebury- prolific quilter and teacher who lives on Bowen Island, BC. Our conversation gets into how Krista started quilting, and then how her approach and practice has evolved and expanded to explore sustainability in different ways, such as by using retired clothing in quilts and creating useable objects out of scraps like jeans. We chat about some of the challenges and pressures around how to get out of creative slumps, and understanding creativity and creative practice broadly. About KristaKrista Hennebury is a geologist by training and quilter by choice. She's been quilting since 2000 in her home studio, currently located on Bowen Island, B.C. Her semi-retired blog is poppyprintcreates.blogspot.ca but these days she mostly shares on Instagram as@poppyprint. Passionate about sharing her love of quilting with others and fostering community through stitching together, Krista established a successful day-retreat business in 2005. She is a popular teacher, presenter and certified Aurifilosopher, working with general and modern guilds all across Canada and internationally, including an Alaska cruise, Australia, Sweden, the U.S., Scotland, England and at Quilt Canada 2019. Since 2020, Krista has taught and lectured at over 90 Zoom events around the world. She describes her work as traditionally-informed modern quilting, using designer prints, solids, linen and retired clothing. Her original patterns have been published in Stitch, Australian Homespun, Quilters Connection, Simply Moderne and Quilt Now magazines. Krista's had 15 quilts juried into QuiltCon and Quilt Canada since 2014 and won awards at both shows. Her book of retreat-inspired projects Make It, Take It was published by Martingale in 2015 and she's twice been a guest on American Patchwork & Quilting Podcast with Pat Sloan. Krista is delighted that her quilt “Chess on the Steps” appears in Modern Quilts: Designs of the New Century, 2017and her“Blackbird Fly” quilt appears in Thomas Knauer's beautiful book Why We Quilt, 2019.Instagram: PoppyprintFB: Krista HenneburyBlog: poppyprintcreates.blogspot.comEmail: poppyprintcreates@gmail.com Support the showJoin The Green Stitcher's Hive at https://thegreenstitchershive.mn.co/ Follow Bridget O'Flaherty @thesustainablequilter on Instagram and @TheSustainableQuilter on Facebook. We first met Olesya Lebedenko on the podcast back in March. Olesya is a Ukrainian textile artist who designs the most beautiful art quilts. She moved to Canada with her family back in 2014 and since then has become a Bernina ambassador as well as a regular on the quilt show circuit in Canada and the United States. In our last chat, in Episode 41, Olesya spoke about the evolution of her craft from making rag dolls and running workshops in Kyiv to creating quilts in Canada as well as her fears for her friends and family back at home and the unfolding war. Since then, Olesya has lost a dear friend in the bombing and spoke about her loss in this episode between 21:30 and 30:30 in the podcast. Olesya has been inspired to create four beautiful large quilts - the polar opposite of her usual mini quilt projects and blocks - 'Acorn Power', 'Blossom of Hope', 'Knot for Luck' and 'Stand Together' are up for auction to raise much needed funds for four Ukrainian charities; Magic Food Army, Medical Battalion 'Hospitallers', Ruslan Goroviy and Serhiy Zhadan. You can find all the information you need about the auction and the charities involved here. Whilst the bids for the quilts may be too much for many to donate, there are quilt patterns which you can buy too - the proceeds of which will be added to the charity total. My thanks to Olesya for her time speaking to me again for Making Stitches. You can find Olesya's website here.To join the mailing list for the new Making Stitches Newsletter, please click onto this link. For full show notes for this episode, please visit the Making Stitches website. The music featured in this episode is Make You Smile by RGMusic from Melody Loops. The Making Stitches logo was designed by Neil Warburton at iamunknown. You can support Making Stitches Podcast with running costs through Ko-fi.Making Stitches Podcast is supported by the Making Stitches Shop which offers Making Stitches Podcast merchandise for sale as well as Up the Garden Path crochet patterns created by me & illustrated by Emma Jackson.Making Stitches Podcast is presented, recorded and edited by Lindsay Weston

Shannon Gillman Orr solved a problem for herself and quickly found out other quilters wanted a product that she hadn't even published yet. I'm amazed at how well she was able to pivot with it and made it possible for quilters to have such a wonderful product. It was fantastic to hear how she admired the tenacity, fortitude, & grit of her great-great grandmother and then worked very hard to bring out those qualities in herself. This week I made a big decision to stop working on a project that's been in progress for months so I could begin writing a book I've been wanting to create for 5+ years. Of course making this decision wasn't easy and I've been working through all the normal issues of feeling like a quitter, regretting the time spent on that project, and more. I hope this episode helps you think about your projects differently and to stop putting the quilts, paintings, or books off for "one day." Make that day TODAY and commit to creating the things your heart most needs to create.Read more here: https://freemotionproject.com/2019/03/permission-to-make-what-you-most-need-to-create.htmlSide note: this was a bit of a ramble. This week I'm taking on a new Great Quilting Debate - can you make quilts from bed sheets? Sheets are available in a wide range of cotton fabrics and for around $35 you can get a huge piece of fabric that seems perfect to use as the backing of your quilt. You can also cut up bed sheets to piece quilts as well. So why are more quilters not doing this? Why have bed sheets gotten a bad reputation for use in our quilts? I also go on to debate using fabric from big box stores and weird stuff like t-shirts, wool, silk, corduroy, and jeans. Find the show notes here: https://leahday.com/episode65

Hello my quilting friends! This week I'm sharing a personal update podcast because I have so many things to share with you. I talk a lot about how I've reached many goals this year by putting in steady effort and just 1-2 hours of time into a project every single day.
If you hire a longarm quilter, does that change who owns the quilt? If you have someone put on the binding, do you need to give them credit all the time? What about professional fabric designers? They sometimes have piecers make multiple quilt tops in time for show. Do they deserve credit for the quilts they create? Enjoy this Great Quilting Debate with Leah Day all about quilt ownership and what it means when you hire someone for help. Find the show notes at: https://leahday.com/episode56
Have you ever seen a quilt and thought "That's cheating?" This week Leah digs into this internal judgement and shares her thoughts on where this idea comes from. After all, a quilt is just three layers of material stitched with thread. Is it really such a big deal if someone uses an embroidery machine, cheater cloth fabric, fusible web, or an automated machine to put it together? Hello my quilting friends! We made it to Episode #50! I'm so happy we created this podcast a year and a half ago. It's helped me reach many goals including feeling more connected to the quilting world and gives me a great excuse to start conversations with quilters and organizations I find interesting. I also decided to check in on my long term goals because just this week I met a goal I'd been seeking for many years. I talk a lot about how I keep my goals always present and maintain focus even over several years of steady effort. Hello my quilting friends! Today I'm chatting with Elizabeth Townsend Gard about quilting and copyright. Check out Just Wanna Quilt, Elizabeth's podcast about the quilting industry and intellectual property right here: https://www.justwannaquilt.com/ I have long felt that copyright and quilting is a tricky subject. On the one hand we have a huge range of public domain quilt blocks and patterns. Basically if your great grandma was piecing log cabin blocks, chances are her great grandma was too. On the other hand many designers struggle to sell patterns because quilters copy and share them rather then purchasing their own copy. It's one thing for a log cabin block to be in the public domain, but the pattern itself - the cut sizes and the words used to describe how to piece that particular quilt are the property of the designer. In the podcast we discussed a specific issue that happened recently with a private Facebook group. The members of the group were copying patterns and quilting books and intentionally covering up or removing the attribution and the information about the authors. I think it's safe to say that most people know this is 100% wrong. I also think it's safe to say that most quilters want to support the designers that they love. Elizabeth Townsend GardBut there also seems to be a good bit of fear in the quilting design community from accidentally designing a pattern to similar to someone else. When do you have to ask permission to make your own version of a quilt? When do you have to ask permission to use a tool or machine or gadget? I've now listened to several of Elizabeth's episodes from Just Wanna Quilt and I love hearing abou the quilting industry from many different perspectives. I have my own little snapshot of what the industry is based on my experience working online and teaching, but that's a very different perspective from a fabric manufacturer in New York or a quilt shop owner in Utah. This is exactly Elizabeth's goal - to create a picture of the quilting industry by talking to as many different people at she can. That includes designers, quilting teachers, fabric manufacturers, and hobby quilters too! If you like to be on the Just Wanna Quilt podcast, please get in touch with Elizabeth and share your thoughts on quilting. Hello My Quilting Friends! Today I'm chatting with Laura-Lynn Fulford, the mom from the Mom and Pop Quilt Shop! Laura-Lynn is a longarm quilter from Canada. She and her husband share videos on longarm quilting on their Youtube channel Mom and Pop Quilt Shop. She also has a website where you can check out all of her services. Find it at WeSewIt.Ca. Laura-Lynn quilts on a Gammill Stattler Stitcher, which is a BIG machine! It's 16 feet all around and she can quilt 24 inches before needing to advance the quilt. She also has automation set up so the computer can drive the machine and stitch out digitized designs. What struck me immediately about Laura-Lynn is her connection to her community. She's a crossing gaurd, teaches quilting to kids, and quilts for a living. She also does alterations and makes charity quilts for her local fire department. Laura-Lynn always sewed and her business started naturally a few years ago when someone needed alterations. Then she and her husband decided to make it their retirement income and got a small business loan in order to purchase the longarm and a Janome Horizon 15000. The biggest part of her business recently has been finishing quilts for people that didn't finish them before they died. These projects sound like a real challenge because they might be in a seriously unfinished state and Laura-Lynn has to figure out how to work with the fabrics, stabilize, and complete the project for the family to enjoy. That sounds like a lot of work and could be very expensive, but Laura-Lynn tries to work with everyone. She'll barter with customers and accept straw for her chickens in exchange for alterations or other services. We and I talked a lot about quilt basting on a longarm and basting the batting before layering the quilt top on the frame. Laura-Lynn's longarm quilting tips: - Check your tension with every bobbin. Weird things can happen when you change bobbins so always test off the quilt before getting into the project. - Baste your batting so the quilt rolls up nice and square. - Practice! The more you quilt, the better you will get. I've shared a few videos quilting on my Grace Qnique, but Laura-Lynn was super helpful sharing her tips for setting up my cameras. She uses a Go Pro and sets it up on the handles of her longarm using a bicycle mount. She's also set up a web cam to the top of the machine that films livestreams. With a name like Mom and Pop Quilt Shop, you know there's two people involved, but Pop is the behind the scenes guy. He helps with editing the videos, designs quilts, and digitizes designs. He's also focused on keeping an archive of their work to leave a legacy behind. I loved talking with Laura-Lynn and learning about longarming as well as her wholesome approach to business and life. The last thing she said has really stuck with me: There is always something to be happy about and be celebrated in the future.
Today I'm chatting with Ann Holmes, the creator of my favorite No Sewing Until You Quilt It applique technique. Get to know Ann and her assistant Rachel and how this cool technique works in this podcast. Check out Ann's website at www.AnnHolmesStudios.com. Ann is both a stained glass artist as well as a quilter and her goal in creating the No Sewing Until You Quilt It Applique technique was to easily make her original stained glass art into quilts. It's a wonderful technique for creating smooth curves without having to sew. Yep, you do have to glue though! You can watch Ann's videos to see how she does No Sewing Until You Quilt It on her YouTube Channel here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCiBJPsN4Zouv8sSl1NFJkNA Find the full show notes with links to everything we mention here: http://freemotionquilting.blogspot.com/2018/02/no-sewing-until-you-quilt-with-ann.html
Meet Christa Watson and learn about piecing and quilting with precut fabrics. This is the topic of Christa's newest book and she shares lots of information about working with precuts, plus how she's designing fabric, teaching classes on Craftsy, and planning more books for the future. Basting spray is an aerosol glue you can use to spray the layers of your quilt so they stick together. It's a faster basting method in comparison to pin basting or hand basting, and I know many quilters that prefer to use spray basting because it's easier on their hands. As with all my Great Quilting Debate episodes, I 100% believe you should use what you want and what works for you! I use polyester thread for quilting, I like to prewash and starch all my fabric before cutting, and I press my seams open - all of these are topics that quilters argue about. But I rarely hear anyone arguing about basting spray and this worries me. I get questions weekly about whether starch will make their quilts more susceptible to bugs (a ridiculous quilting rumor in my opinion), but I never get questions about the effects of basting spray - a far more detrimental chemical. Maybe this is because I don't use basting spray so quilters are taking their questions about it elsewhere. Or maybe quilters don't know about the possible side effects of using this chemical in their quilts. Read more about spray basting here: http://freemotionquilting.blogspot.com/2018/01/is-basting-spray-bad-for-quilts-podcast.html
Meet Amy Helton, or LongarmYogiGal, a longarm quilter from Kentucky. Amy is also a yogi and we talk about incorporating yoga into a daily routine and how Amy started her longarm quilting business. Connect with Amy through her Facebook Page Amy's In Stitches - https://www.facebook.com/amysinstitches
Meet Melanie Ham, a super successful Youtube teacher who shares videos on crafting, crochet, and quilting. I love her videos which are so nicely edited and clearly demonstrated. Find Melanie's YouTube Channel here: https://www.youtube.com/user/iheartstitching Also check out Melanie's premium course website. This is where Melanie shares more in-depth courses, projects, and quilt alongs. Remember she shared a coupon code in the podcast - make sure to enter Leah in the checkout to save 25% on your course! I really enjoyed talking with Melanie because she and I do the same thing! We both make videos and teach a craft online and work daily to balance our busy schedules along with taking care of our kids, running our businesses, and managing our households. Of course, all of the messy bits get edited out of our videos (along with the unfinished bits too!) but it can be a struggle to get everything done on time. It was so nice to chat with another quilter who understands this world of online teaching and making videos.
This week's guest is Stephanie Soebbing, the owner of QuiltAddictsAnonymous.com. Eight months ago Stephanie owned only an online quilt shop, but then expanded to create a studio, then expanded again to create a full scale brick and mortar quilt shop. In this episode hear how this transformation has worked for Stephanie and some of the struggles she's experienced along the way.
Do you prewash fabric before cutting and piecing a new quilt top? Learn about this Great Quilting Debate with Leah Day and hear why she believes prewashing fabric is a very important step in the quilt-making process.
Yes, the choice to use starch on your fabric is a contentious subject in the quilting world and over the years I've gotten comments ranging from "You're ruining people's quilts with your bad advice!" to "Wow! Starch made such a difference to my fabric and piecing is so much easier now!" One thing I forgot to include in the podcast is why I use starch - I find it stiffens the fabric nicely, which makes squaring it and cutting pieces and strips much easier and more accurate. I also find starch fabrics are less likely to fray on the edges. Lately I've been testing the stability of my starched fabrics by not pinning units together. Even with the seams pressed open and no pins, my seams are matching every time and I think a lot of that has to do with all the fabrics in the quilt feeling and acting the same. I don't have one fabric that's going loosey goosie while another is stiff as a board. So yes, I'm on Team Starch and I use it to prepare the fabrics in every single quilt we make. If we're using precuts, every single strip or square is starched on both sides before it's cut or pieced into the quilt. As for Team Starch is Evil, I get it! If you've been taught that a substance is bad for your fabric and you've never used it before and got along just fine, that's great! When researching starch, I found a lot of helpful information at OldandInteresting.com. I do think the whole bug-loving-starch thing is a bit silly and I shared my opinion on where that story got started in the podcast. It makes absolutely no sense that a substance used for hundreds of years in clothing that washes out of fabric completely could make a moth more likely to chew up your quilt! There are a lot more products out there like fusible webs, spray basting, and permanent marking pens that can wreck far more havoc on your quilts and I don't see a massive concerted effort to demonize them. As with our last Great Quilting Debate podcast on pressing seams open, I think there's room for every technique, every method, and every opinion. Please don't feel like just because you don't use starch or press your seams open we can't be friends! Read more in the show notes here: http://freemotionquilting.blogspot.com/2017/11/is-starch-bad-for-quilts-podcast.html Find more podcast episodes and show notes at www.LeahDay.com/Podcast
Do you press your seams open on your quilt blocks or to one side? This is a Great Quilting Debate that I get asked about almost daily in comments and via email. In this episode I share why I believe pressing seams open is better than to one side, but also why many quilters believe the opposite is a better method. I also share lots of sneak peeks and details about my new book which will be available for preorder on November 1st! Find the show notes, plus many more podcast episodes at LeahDay.com/podcast
Today I have a wonderful interview with Luis Sanchez, our first international quilter on the show! Luis is a hobby quilter, but has started sharing quilting tutorials in Spanish to help spread this wonderful craft in his home country of Costa Rica and beyond. Find Luis's YouTube Channel Here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBQZqkX3AZ35QlXBL-fX1Ig The videos are all in Spanish, but you can use the translator to read the translation in English. Luis was raised listening to a sewing machine hum because his grandmother sewed all the clothing in the house and also worked as a seamstress in two factories. The sound of the machine running was relaxing to him so when his grandmother passed away 7 years ago he inherited her machine. He learned how to sew first and created basic projects, then moved on to wallets, purses, and bags. From the videos he found he learned the basics and eventually ran across my videos on free motion quilting, but had no idea what I was doing in the video, but thought it could help make his bags a bit better. I had a wonderful time getting to know Luis better in this chat and I hope you will check out his YouTube videos!
Hello my quilting friends! Today I have a terrific interview with Anne Marie Chany from Gen X Quilters. Anne Marie hosts a yearly sampler quilt along, is the author of several quilt books, and has recently created Hoop Quilts - a new way to create and display mini quilts! Let's learn more about Hoop Quilts! I fell in love with this over the summer as Anne Marie began posting pictures to Instagram. I LOVE this idea because it takes care of a big issue I have with mini quilts - what do you do with them after they're done!? Anne Marie has created a beautiful quilt pattern for you to make your own mini hoop quilt with sixteen half square triangles you can mix and match. She also has templates you can cut out and piece the curved seam to create this pretty circle too. Hoop Quilts are also a great way to use up small scraps of fabric and play with embellishment. I love the idea of gluing on buttons and stitching decorative threads on the surface. Anne Marie was originally inspired to create Hoop Quilts after spending a lot of time hand embroidering while recovering from surgery so this seems a terrific way to try new techniques on a small, manageable project. Learn more about Anne Marie and find her hoop quilt pattern at: http://www.genxquilters.com/

Today I'm chatting with Margaret Leuwen the business owner behind MissMarkersQuilts.com. Margaret is a longarm quilter, shares YouTube videos, and hosts fun quilt alongs throughout the year. For the past few years Margaret has shared quilt along projects online. This year instead of one massive quilt along, she's sharing Quilt of the Quarter - four different quilts which take a quarter of the year to create and are made with fat quarters! Her last Quilt of the Quarter will be this beautiful Christmas tree quilt using Kaffe Fasset fabrics. All of the Quilts of the Quarter are projects Margaret designs herself to tackle her fat quarter stash. She designs the quilt patterns so you can make multiple sizes depending on how many fat quarters you start with. This is great because fat quarters are often something I collect, but find hard to use up! Margaret shares the How-To information of her quilt alongs on YouTube and shares any written directions on Facebook. She has trouble with the written directions, but can easily show you how to do something in video. She learned how to do this when her daughter was in Idaho and wanted to learn how tie a quilt. Margaret tried to write out the directions, but that didn't work so she grabbed a camera and shot a video of Margaret, her sister, and her mom teaching her daughter how to tie a quilt. Margaret started a blog and kept it going for awhile, but just didn't feel like it got traction. She was focusing more on her longarm quilting business and her YouTube channel and her fans kept asking for a Facebook Group which really took off this year. Margaret is most looking forward to watching her grandchildren grow up, being apart of her loving family, and continuing to teach and share quilting. Learn more about Margaret Leuwen at her website http://www.missmarkersquilts.com/
Meet Amy Johnson, the creator of Amy's Free Motion Quilting Adventures where she's shared many videos on machine quilting with rulers. She's was one of the first quilters to try longarm rulers on her home machine and she's taught two Craftsy classes on this topic as well: Quilting with Rulers on a Home Machine and Creative Quilting with Rulers. She started by simply blogging her quilting adventures, then taught the Craftsy class and opened an online store to carry the tools, rulers, and feet that support the classes. I send everyone to Amy's website for ruler feet because she will know what foot will fit your machine the best. Amy was a stay at home mom, but then her husband was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer and this changed their lives completely. Now he works repairing the sewing machines at Sew Simple, the machine dealership they own in Lynchburg, VA. They've just recently moved the shop to a new building that has a separate classroom so Amy has space for teaching and machines. We worked together last year on the Tunic Challenge. Each week we shared our progress on a tunic from The Tunic Bible in blog posts. Come to think of it, I need to make another tunic for the summer! We talked a bit about the challenges brick and mortar quilt shops are going through with competition from online stores. Many store owners feel like people are "show running" the shop and looking and checking things out, but then buying online to get a better deal. That trend is driving brick and mortar shops out of business because it is VERY expensive to run a physical quilt shop. Amy is working so hard to manage her two businesses and we talked a bit about burnout. Working super long days, taking care of three kids, a household, and a storefront is so much to manage. I've struggled with burnout myself and I know there's only so long you can run fast and hard before something breaks. Moving forward, Amy wants to focus more on her online business, be able to spend more time quilting and be able to step away from cutting fabric in the quilt shop. I keep telling her she needs to write a book, but as you'll see from the intro - that's a lot of work too! This episode was sponsored by April Wells from SewDarnCuteQuilting.Blogspot.com. April is a longarm quilter who can help you finish your quilts with beautiful machine quilting.

Laura is a freelance educator and pattern designer and the creator behind Sew Very Easy, her YouTube Channel that has new videos coming out every Tuesday and Thursday at 2 pm. Her first video was about her tablecloth quilts - yes, she eats on her quilts! Honestly that's a great idea so we can see and enjoy more quilts around the house. Laura shares videos on sewing and quilting and plans her tutorials around seasonal projects and items she's curious about and wants to create. She occasionally will publish a series of videos like her three part how to sew on buttons, but for the most part you only need to watch one video to see the entire tutorial. Her process for creating a video is pretty simple - she gets an idea, then researches the materials required, and designs the pattern. As she's writing and planning, she's also acquiring the materials and keeps the entire project organized in a bin on her shelf. Once the bin is filled and she has all the materials and pattern created, Laura starts making the video. It takes her about two days to create the video tutorials from start to finish. She only sews one item while making the project from beginning to end so she doesn't end up with lots of half finished projects. Find Laura's YouTube Channel right here: https://www.youtube.com/SewVeryEasy
