Where do we go when we die? And what if we could go there and then come back to tell about it? For Elizabeth Johnson Rice, a prominent 1960's social activist, her brush with death left her forever changed and set her on a mission which she is still pursuing today at the age of 80. Second Chance is written by Wells Hanley and is sung by René Marie. Wells Hanley, piano; Randall Pharr, bass; Billy Williams, drums. Engineered, mixed, and mastered by Curtis Fye. I took a dive, but I've got a second chance. I just landed my lucky break, got the band back together for another take. I was "ciao", but now I'm wide awake.   I let my life go completely receding to a far away shore. Now I've returned so sweetly, back in the flesh, and ready for more.   I can feel my feet, I can sing and dance, I've returned to wearin' my shirt and pants, I've got a second chance. And I'm carrying a jewel, and I don't wanna drop it, I would be such a foo-el if I should ever stop making the most of this second chance!   My days were numbered, I lumbered, feeling so encumbered by fate, but having dozed and slumbered, I'm back in the race, and I'm feeling great... There's a tear somewhere in the grand design that I should have crossed that finish line and kept on running, Lord how I feel so fine!   Now I have got another shot, I've entered a bonus round, and I would never have thought there could exist this delicious twist in the plot... The curtain was closed, and the show was done, but the producer introduced an extended run. We made a pact, and now another act has begun.   The show keeps going and going, I know it's gonna grow and thrive. I'm overflowing just owing to being alive! I am gonna survive...   I'm living up my second chance, I'm gonna work this perk in my circumstance. I was revived, and I survived, my day has arrived, I'm gonna thrive, and I'm still alive cause I've got a second chance... ...and I know I never want to lose my second chance!

René Marie–Grammy nominated singer who didn't start her career until she was 42–on following our inner note, sticking it to the patriarchy, getting hit by buses, getting out of an abusive relationship, recognizing a weed from a plant (not about gardening), accepting dormant periods, performing original material, doing "the shit", and why getting your boss to sing is more important than a Grammy nomination. In a span of two decades, 11 recordings and countless stage performances, vocalist René Marie has cemented her reputation as not only a singer but also a composer, arranger, theatrical performer and teacher. Guided and tempered by powerful life lessons and rooted in jazz traditions laid down by Ella Fitzgerald, Dinah Washington and other leading ladies of past generations, she borrows various elements of folk, R&B and even classical and country to create a captivating hybrid style. Her body of work is musical, but it's more than just music. It's an exploration of the bright and dark corners of the human experience, and an affirmation of the power of the human spirit.

Monica Ellis from Imani Winds joins the Soundweavers team to chat about their ensemble's origin and the gradual development of their mission over their first several years. She shared about Imani's really interesting experience with having "in-house" composers in the ensemble. We chat about the evolution of their recording process and how they have sought out new ensemble members. And, we speak about the ensemble's new gig as faculty members at the Curtis Institute of Music. Celebrating over two decades of music making, the Grammy nominated Imani Winds has led both a revolution and evolution of the wind quintet through their dynamic playing, adventurous programming, imaginative collaborations and outreach endeavors that have inspired audiences of all ages and backgrounds. The ensemble's playlist embraces traditional chamber music repertoire, and as a 21st century group, Imani Winds is devoutly committed to expanding the wind quintet repertoire by commissioning music from new voices that reflect historical events and the times in which we currently live. Present and future season performances include a Jessie Montgomery composition inspired by her great-grandfather's migration from the American south to the north, as well as socially conscious music by Andy Akiho, designed to be performed both on the concert stage and in front of immigrant detention centers throughout the country. Imani Winds regularly performs in prominent international concert venues, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, Walt Disney Hall and the Kimmel Center. Their touring schedule has taken them throughout the Asian continent, Brazil, Australia, England, New Zealand and across Europe. Their national and international presence include performances at chamber music series in Boston, New York, Washington D.C., San Francisco, Philadelphia and Houston. Festival performances include Chamber Music Northwest, the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, the Ravinia Festival, Chautauqua, Banff Centre and Angel Fire. Imani Winds' travels through the jazz world are highlighted by their association with saxophonist and composer Wayne Shorter, woodwind artist and composer Paquito D'Rivera and pianist and composer Jason Moran. Their ambitious project, "Josephine Baker: A Life of Le Jazz Hot!" featured chanteuse René Marie in performances that brought the house down in New York, Pittsburgh, San Francisco, Los Angeles and St. Louis. In 2016, Imani Winds received their greatest accolade in their 20 years of music making: a permanent presence in the classical music section of the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington DC. Grammy-nominated jazz vocalist and songwriter Rene Marie has a perfect metaphor for how to spark creativity: "I think the creative bent is a shy little animal that only comes out when it's safe, when it feels that it's going to be heard or listened to. At least that's the way it is for me. If I ignore it, then it just goes back under its rock, but if I feed it, encourage it, play with it, acknowledge it, 'Hey, little guy!' then it comes back out more and more." In 1997, when she was in her early 40s, she returned to her musical career. Over the past 20 years, she has made numerous recordings and stage performances including at the Morris Graves Museum, brought here by the Redwood Jazz Alliance . She's this week's guest on Chronologically Gifted talking about her creative process and creativity in later life.
