Conrad Anker is renowned throughout the world as one of the greatest living mountaineers. Follow him to the Himalayan peaks of northern India to climb the ‘Shark's Fin' of Mt. Meru, a sheer 1,500-foot wall of blank granite, one the hardest, most dangerous and beautiful routes on the planet.  For 30 years the best mountaineers in the world had attempted to climb Mt. Meru and for 30 years one-by-one they were spit off. It was thought that perhaps no one would ever reach its summit. Sacred to four religions, Mt. Meru is known as the abode of the gods. Perhaps it wasn't meant to be climbed. Perhaps it was impossible. But impossible is a word that Conrad doesn't understand. This is the story of that climb. This is the story of the adventure of his life. But it's more than that too. Coming up as a young climber, Conrad was mentored by a man called Mugs Stump, another legend of his day. For Mugs, Mt. Meru represented the pinnacle of mountaineering. Climbing it would be the greatest achievement of his career. Conrad and him made a promise, they vowed that no matter what they would one day reach the top together.  But, tragically, Mugs died before his dream could be realised. After that, climbing Mt. Meru became more than just a mountain or Conrad, it became an obsession. It became the culmination of his life's work. He put a team together, Jimmy Chin – the renowned mountaineer and filmmaker – and a young climber called Renan Ozturk. Together, they travelled to northern India and began the long journey to the summit.  This is a story about what it takes to achieve the impossible. This, is the story of Mt. Meru. Highlights:    Follow the world's best climbers pitch-by-pitch up the hardest climb on the planet. -Hear what it's like to survive for 17 days in a ‘Sea of Gravity', as Conrad calls it, 1000s feet of extreme exposure pulling you down into all sides. -Discover what it takes to survive one of the worst Himalayan storms in 50 years, trapped in a portaledge thousands of feet above the ground, with avalanches raining down all around you -Climb the House of Cards, one of the most dangerous pitches in mountaineering -Hear the wisdom and inspiration that Conrad has learnt from a life in the mountains. The documentary of this climb is called Meru, shot and directed by another legend Jimmy Chin. Thirteen years ago Fitz got talked into doing our first live Dirtbag Diaries at 5Point Film Festival. So, we were thrilled to to return again for the 2024 festival and talk with Dr. John Francis, Taylor Rees and Renan Ozturk.  In 1971, John gave up motorized transportation after seeing the effects of an oil spill on wildlife. Months later he took a vow of silence that lasted 17 years. A forerunner in the intersectional environmentalist movement, we talked about the influence of the Beatles, loneliness, and finding home.  In the last 15 years, the creative lights of Taylor and Renan have shown as bright as any through art, through photography and film. They hold an incredible duality of bearing witness to the human spirit and on the flip side, they aren't afraid to look at the difficult parts of human nature and its impact on animals, humans and our planet.  A Symphony of Tiny Lights Trailer John's book: Human Kindness: True stories of compassion and generosity that changed the world Support comes from Ketone.com/DirtbagDiaries Get 30% off your first subscription Kuat Racks  Want more episodes? At the point at which this episode is published, Matt is on an expedition in Alaska directing a film for National Geographic. Instead of taking a break from weekly releases, we thought we'd share some of his favourite episodes from early on in the life of the podcast.Episode 153 of The Adventure Podcast is From The Archives, and was originally released in April 2019. It features one of the world's most accomplished mountaineers, Conrad Anker. When Matt first decided to start a podcast, he wrote five names down on a piece of paper as ‘end game' guests, and Conrad was the first to be ticked off. There is much to be said about Conrad, but he is perhaps best known for his truly epic ascent of Meru with Jimmy Chin and Renan Ozturk. Only two days before recording this episode, three of Conrad's friends and mentees were tragically killed in an avalanche in the Canadian Rockies. In this episode, Conrad reflects honestly, openly and at points heartbreakingly, on a life in the mountains which provides him with untold joy and a sense of identity, whilst also struggling with survivor guilt and the death of friends that has happened ‘far too many times'.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-adventure-podcast. As a storytelling mastermind, Taylor excels at showing nuance and presenting compelling questions that invite you into a deeper curiosity. What's better: cragging it up in a full-on scene filled with gumbies and noobs, spray bros and crusher queens? Or going off to some obscure choss pile in the middle of nowhere and enjoying the quiet solitude of nature all by yourself? We debate the pros and cons of scenes vs solitude and come to the conclusion that, no matter which one you choose, either way the only person laughing at your jokes is still just you. Next, Freddie Wilkinson and Renan Ozturk join us to talk about their new film The Sanctity of Space, a feature-length film documenting their Tooth Traverse of the Moose's Tooth massif in Alaska. Conrad Anker: Life Lessons from Death, Risk, and Mother Nature

Finding Mastery

This week's conversation is with Conrad Anker, an absolute legend who has been pushing the limits of mountaineering for the last 30 years, evolving into one of America's best alpinists. At age 56, Conrad's resume continues to grow, having notched the long-awaited first ascent of the Meru Shark's Fin in India with partners Jimmy Chin and Renan Ozturk in 2011, which led to the Sundance-winning documentary, Meru. Conrad has climbed Everest three times, including a 2012 trip with National Geographic to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first American ascent of the mountain. Though true alpine routes have been his forte, his résumé also includes big wall first ascents on El Capitan and first free ascents in Zion National Park. In 1997 alone, he completed first ascents in Antarctica, Pakistan's Karakorum and on Yosemite's El Capitan. So Conrad operates in high consequence environments, places where the luxury of a mistake is often not afforded. Like so many explorers of nature and human nature, he doesn't consider himself a risk-taker, but someone who works in high risk environments. It's a forcing function, like none other than I know – to get to the truth and the purity of thought and action. It forces best judgment, and the rewards and consequences of such. And because of that, he's come to have a deep relationship with life - with people and mother nature – his experience, with experience.I hope that for all of us – to know oneself, others, to know mother nature – and to have a meaningful relationship with experience. To be able to work well with feelings, emotions, thoughts and the unfolding world outside of you. Episode 2#04 is thrilled to sit down with Colorado-based Renan Ozturk to discuss his latest film “The Sanctity of Space”. A climbing film at heart, it not only celebrates the stunning landscapes of Denali National Park, the Alaska Range and the film-makers' carving of a new skyline route across the “Moose's Tooth” peak (3,150m)… but also pays heartfelt tribute to Brad Washburn, the legendary aerial photographer whose life's work provided inspiration for the entire project. And there's time for more than that too. Renan - a sponsored expedition climber, landscape artist, and previous “National Geographic Adventurer of the Year” - has had a busy career so far. You may recognise him from his previous film projects “Meru” and “Sherpa” (both 2015), or perhaps from his back catalogue of arresting mountaineering photography. The true definition of 'adventure' is an endeavor you embark upon when you don't know the outcome. In the spirit of long lost Everest pioneer George Mallory, who was told that no human being could ever climb Mount Everest, we tip our caps here to the people who dare go where few others dare. Mallory was once asked "Why climb Everest?". He is famously credited to have answered "Because it's there." We all have an Everest: whether on land, sea, air, space or, quite simply, the mind, in this podcast we say 'go find it'.In BECAUSE IT'S THERE we'll be meeting with some of the world's most intrepid explorers, and adventurers, scientists, biologists, oceanographers, like Don Walsh, who in 1960 co-piloted the bathyscaphe Trieste to the bottom of the Mariana Trench, -35,994 feet below the sea. We'll share a rare interview with Sir Edmund Hillary, the first man to ever set foot upon the summit of Everest. We'll also meet modern day explorers, like climber/filmmaker/social media influencer Renan Ozturk, Lhakpa Sherpa, the most successful female Everest climber of all time, who has climbed Mount Everest nine times, the most of any woman in the world. We'll investigate mysteries, such as the disappearance of George Mallory and Sandy Irvine, who, in 1924 disappeared high upon the slopes of Mount Everest, last seen at over 28,000', going for the top. Their disappearance continues to captivate armchair mountaineers and would-be sleuths almost 100 years later. What these men and women all share is a belief in oneself, the refusal to accept the common idea that something is impossible. Because it's there will amaze, educate, entertain and inspire listeners to stretch the limits of imagination and begin to see what's possible…If you ever thought about what it would be like to sail around the world in an ancient-styled ship made of reeds, swim the English Channel, search for never before discovered species, climb Mount Everest, balloon around the globe, well, Because It's There will share important and unique contributions to exploration, science, literature, adventure and human endeavor throughout history and into the future.I'm your host, explorer/adventurer and filmmaker Thom Pollard. Sanjay is a fantastic story teller and a maker of films that might seem to have a pretty specific focus, but actually have wide-ranging applicability and relevance. And this is most definitely true of his latest film, Gather, which Sanjay directed, and Renan Ozturk served as the cinematographer.Gather tells the story of the growing food sovereignty movement among Native American tribes across the U.S. — which is a historical and a current cultural development that I suspect too many of us know too little about. 122: Conrad Anker: Legendary Mountaineer, Filmmaker of Meru, and Discovered George Mallory on Mt Everest Conrad Anker Host Mark Pattison opens up the show with a quote from his guest Conrad Anker, “We don’t just measure greatest by the peaks that we climb, or the heights we reach, but rather by the positive impact that we create for ourselves, our communities, and our planet. Our goodness to reach each other is what makes us whole, and what endures for generations beyond our physical feats and achievements.”     On this episode of Finding Your Summit Podcast, we talk with Conrad Anker, RLegendary Mountaineer, Filmmaker of Meru, and discovered the body of George Mallory on Mt Everest. Conrad shares his experiences as a mountaineer hand-picked to be sponsored by the North Face outdoor apparel company, how he met his wife, Jennifer, making the mountaineering documentary Meru, and his dedication to helping human beings during his eventful journey:  “Throughout the world, the amount of time that women spend getting water is something that if you had an economist tabulate all of the hours and how much time that they have spent there, there is a lot of time that could be spent educating their children or working on their garden, doing needlework, or just relaxing, and enjoying life, rather than carrying water.”   What You Will Learn:   Conrad speaks highly of the work his wife Jennifer does and how they connected as a couple: “My own connection to Nepal is through my spouse Jennifer, with the Khumbu Climbing Center and its vocational training for high altitude workers, and that’s based in the Khumbu region in Nepal. So, it’s in Nepali hands now. They are taking over it.”   Conrad Anker has been with North Face for the last 25-30 for sponsorship. How often exactly has Conrad Anker climbed Mount Everest? “I’ve been to Everset three times. In 1999, and then again in 2007 and then 2012. Each of them was a different experience.”    Where did he get the desire to get involved in mountaineering? Conrad’s father’s side of the family is from Tuolumne County in California. It is part of the northern half of Yosemite National Park. His mother was from Germany and she had family members that were climbers. “Living in Salt Lake (City) in the 80s, moving there in ‘81 onwards was a big opportunity because there is a great place to train for alpine climbing.”   Conrad Anker guides his own hand-picked crew. In 1999 he was tasked with finding the body of Geroge Mallory, the first British explorer on Mount Everest who was carrying a Kodak camera. “He had seven layers of clothing on. Nylon wasn’t invented until about the Second World War, thereabouts. They were just into down feathers as insulation. The earliest down jackets were as a result of those pioneering British expeditions.  As long as they were moving they were OK.   In 1999, Conrad experienced avalanche that he was partially buried in. “There was a release of an avalanche up there and we had a moment of awareness and then we started running. We went from a sort of cognitive decision-making mindset to autonomic, where you are at the most reptilian part of your brain where survival sets in and you are like, ‘How can I save my life?’”   The Movie Meru   Meru is the documentary Conrad Anker helped create that was released in 2015, featuring the struggle to climb Mount Meru in the Himalayas. “It was a long process and so the first time I had a go at it was 2003 and got totally schooled and then came back in 2008 with Jimmy Chin and Renan Ozturk and we got about 100 meters or so from the summit. We were just too risky. A small mistake getting large and becoming epic was very real. So we came back in 2011.”   Conrad’s Affinity for Antarctica    Conrad also discusses his enjoyment of Antarctica “In the Ellsworth range, there are seven principle summits within it that kind of form the spine of that.” During this episode of Finding Your Summit Podcast, learn more about how Conrad continues to evolve in his life, reducing his personal climbing range down to about 5,000 meters since his heart attack: “Life is a linear experience. You don’t have to go back to something. You have done that and find something new to do and find out what that next opportunity in life is.”    Links to Additional Resources: Mark Pattison:: markpattisonnfl.com Conrad Anker: conradanker.com Conrad Anker Social Media: Linkedin  Facebook  Instagram   Laird Superfood – Code: Markp20 [Sponsor] Cascade Mountain Tech [Sponsor] E-Learning Course Be sure to check out Mark’s new e-learning course here. “It's truly a necessity to have a passion as a compass in life.”Hilaree NelsonIt’s so easy to get comfortable. To accept life as it is. To kick back — and just settle.Luxury and ease are what we are taught to seek. But it's actually at odds with the vitality and fulfillment most desire. My experience is that life gets interesting when you have the courage, strength and fortitude to step outside your comfort zone, face a little fear and test your limits.Because extending your boundaries strips away the non-essential, and shows you exactly who you really are.Fail or succeed, this is where all the magic happens. The growth. And a life fueled by purpose and passion.Today we explore these themes with North Face athlete Hilaree Nelson, one of the world's most accomplished adventure athletes.Named one of National Geographic’s 2018 Adventurers of the Year, Hilaree specializes in ski-mountaineering — a discipline that involves huge and often technical mountain ascents either on skis or carrying them, then descending said peaks on skis.Over the course of her storied career, Hilaree has conquered some of the most exotic and treacherous mountain ranges on Earth. Among her many accomplishments:* the first woman to climb both Everest and its 8,000-meter neighbor, Lhotse, in a 24-hour period* the first person to ski down all five of the Mongolian Altai’s “Holy Peaks”* skied from the Himalayan summit of Cho Oyu in Tibet* summited peaks and volcanoes in remote locations across Russia, Mongolia, Pakistan, Bolivia, Argentina, Lebanon & TibetI first came across Hilaree by way of Down To Nothing, a stunning documentary by Renan Ozturk that chronicles a 2014 National Geographic expedition to be the first to ascend the summit of Hkakabo Razi in Myanmar to determine if it is indeed Southeast Asia’s highest point. It’s a gorgeous and gripping glimpse of Hilaree’s skill and tenacity in the face of a uniquely extraordinary challenge. This is her story. It’s an incredible conversation about fear, risk resilience, adventure and potential. It’s about balancing the pull of adventure against her responsibilities as a single mom to two boys. It’s about the allure of the outdoors. But mostly, this is an exchange about the virtues of placing yourself outside that comfort zone – and what that can teach us about potential. The preciousness of life. And what it means to be truly alive.Hilaree is a badass. It's a pleasure to share her experience. Then imagine staying put for 12 days straight to weather a ferocious storm, torrential winds and temperatures that dip into twenty below territory. That’s just one harrowing peek into the life of today’s guest, Conrad Anker – a man widely considered to be the most accomplished high altitude climber in the world and one of the most respected adventure athletes of all time. The team leader of The North Face climbing team as well as the subject of not one but several Outside Magazine cover profiles, Conrad is renown for specializing in not just the highest mountains but the most technically challenging ascents — conquering the trickiest peaks spread across the high Himalaya, Antarctica, Alaska and the big walls of Patagonia.Conrad has summited Everest 3 times, including a successful 2012 ascent without the aid of supplemental oxygen — a feat reserved for only the most elite mountaineers. In a 1999 Everest expedition, Conrad famously located the remains of George Mallory– the legendary British climber who disappeared in the midst of his historic 1924 attempt to be the first to summit the world's highest peak. Last seen about 800 vertical feet from the summit, speculation as to whether Mallory and his climbing partner Andrew Irvine had reached the summit before dying has been a subject of much dispute. But Conrad's discovery shed much light on the mystery of this and other pioneering climbs of early expeditions. On a personal level, in 1999 Conrad survived an avalanche in Tibet — a massive wall of snow and ice that tossed his body 100 feet, beat him up badly and took the life of his best friend and climbing companion Alex Lowe. Conrad would later marry Alex's widow Jennifer and raise his three sons, Max, Sam and Isaac.A few years ago I had the good fortune of meeting Conrad, including the privilege of hearing him share the story of his internationally celebrated 2011 attempt to summit a peak previously thought impossible – the Shark's Fin of Meru. Considered the most technically complicated and dangerous peak in the Himalayas, it's an astonishing tale. Now this expedition is the subject of a new documentary aptly named Meru, feted with the prestigious Audience Award at last winter's Sundance Film Festival. I had an opportunity to see the film and I can say first hand that it is extraordinary. Visceral. Harrowing. And terrifying as much as it is inspiring. “A meditation on life, death and everything in between” according to Newsweek, the film works as a true character study, winning mainstream hearts previously unfamiliar with the world of climbing. A redemptive deep look into the lives and complicated pasts of Conrad and his talented climbing teammates Jimmy Chin and Renan Ozturk (both responsible for not only scaling the peak but also capturing the entire experience on film), See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
