Hey hey mama! So last week, Alison Avayu and I had so much to talk about that I had to have her back again! On today's episode we dig into the Spiritual Journey from Maiden to Motherhood as well as how we as women have to really learn the asking for help is not a sign of weakness but instead a sign of strength! After personally struggling through the first few years of motherhood with two small kids, a partner that worked long hours, and very little family around to help, Alison Avayu saw the need for resources and community for moms and how lacking our society was in providing support for moms. Alison Avayu decided to create Motherhood Elevated, a resource guide or "pocket doula" after having 2 little boys 23 months apart. She saw the need and found a way to fill it!You can connect with Alison -Her website - https://linktr.ee/alisonavayuInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/alisonavayu/We mentioned the books Women Who Run With the Wolves by Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estés https://amzn.to/42Ju7yWand The Fourth Trimester: A Postpartum Guide to Healing Your Body, Balancing Your Emotions, and Restoring Your Vitality by Kimberly Ann Johnson.https://amzn.to/3XaiBvw I'm Sarah - a wife, homeschooling / unschooling mom, and a neurodiverse woman who has battled autoimmune disease my whole life. So I created a FREE PARENT ADVOCACY TOOLKIT! I have packed it full of resources so you no longer have to spend hours searching for the best ways to handle a meltdown or why your child will not eat certain foods or what your state's special education laws are. Today I interview Kimberly Johnson and Stephen Jenkinson about their new book, Reckoning (Iron God of Mercy, 2022). Reckoning is an encounter, not only of two people trying to make sense of how to be human—and humane—in what they call our “troubled times,” but also of how to live in a world that's larger than us, a world that has its own designs and aims and needs which surpass us and, if we don't attend to them, surprise us. Death comes to us, whether we're ready or not. Gods and ancestors appear, whether we recognize them or not. And, amid it all, sometimes we find ourselves alongside a companion who's willing to reckon with these larger truths, even as we're undone, even as our hearts break. That's the encounter of Reckoning, one Johnson and Jenkinson invite us to join. Stephen Jenkinson the author of six books. He is a worker, author, storyteller, culture activist, and co-founder of the Orphan Wisdom School with his wife Nathalie Roy. He is also the subject of the feature length documentary film Griefwalker, a portrait of his work with dying people, and Lost Nation Road, a shorter documentary on the crafting of the Nights of Grief and Mystery tours, which he undertakes with his band and collaborator Gregory Hoskins. Kimberly Johnson is the author of multiple books, including Call of The Wild: How We Heal Trauma, Awaken Our Own Power, And Use It For Good and the early mothering classic The Fourth Trimester: Healing Your Body, Balancing Your Emotions and Restoring Your Vitality published in seven languages around the world. It feels good and respectable to take care of others. When it comes to taking care of ourselves we often feel selfish, spoiled or undeserving when we spend our limited time on ourselves. Well, back up and rethink that. Do not feel guilty taking time for yourself. There is a reason that the airlines tell every person on every flight to “put on your own oxygen mask first, before helping your children or others needing assistance”. Here are some quotes to ponder:1. Self-care is a priority and necessity, not a luxury in the work that we do.2. Self-care means giving the world the Best of you, instead of what is left of you.3. True self-care is not about a life of bath salts and chocolate cake, it is making the choice to build a life you don’t need to regularly escape from.4. You cannot pour from an empty cup.5. Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few seconds, including you!6. Taking care of yourself doesn’t mean “me first” it means “me too”.Choose one of those quotes that really speaks to you and write it down where you can see it as a visual reminder that You Are Worth It.In her book “Famous in Heaven & at Home”, Michelle Myers reinforces this with a simple rule: Our health routine should enhance, not hinder our lives. Taking care of yourself, when done with the correct motives, should best equip you to take care of others.Journal Questions:1. Do you have any areas in your health life that you battle guilt?2. What are some of your excuses or barriers when it comes to nutrition and fitness?3. If someone could grant you an extra hour in your day, how would you spend it?Kelly Brown is a friend who is the owner of Mom Camp, a marketing specialist and certified Birth Doula and Lamaze childbirth educator who is currently in training to be a postpartum Doula. She and her husband also own a small family farm called “French Broad Valley Farms”, where they are raising 150 chickens and ducks along side of their 3 young children.Kelly opens up and talks honestly about the struggles she has faced, allowing us not to feel alone in our own imperfections! Despite her knowledge and expertise as a birthing coach, Kelly was not prepared for what it was like to suffer from Postpartum Depression (PPD) or what is now called Postpartum Mood and Anxiety Disorder. In retrospect she had a mild case of PPD with her first two children but with the birth of her son she suffered tremendously, in silence. She was ashamed to admit it and afraid no one would trust her as a birth doula if she couldn’t handle the aftermath of her own childbirth. After 10 months she finally looked for help. Since then she has trained to become a postpartum coach to help other mothers in the same situation.Look for a postpartum specialist to guide you during the weeks after you bring home your newborn. She can help you to understand the changes in your body and what to expect (and what not to expect). Proper nutrition after the birth of your child is extremely important for both you and your baby. Your specialist can teach you the appropriate foods for a nursing mother. Use your resources to your advantage. Reach out and accept help from all those people who offer it and share with them the guidelines given to you by your specialist.Resources:The 4th Trimester: A Postpartum Guide to Healing Your Body, Balancing Your Emotions, and Restoring Your Vitality by Kimberly Ann Johnson.Ms Johnson has studied other cultures that have practices that honor and nurture new mothers helping them to focus only on themselves and their newborn. #094 — Trauma, Sex, and Somatic Experiencing: How to Better Understand Birth and the Postpartum Periods It seems obvious that sustaining a wound the size of a dinner plate would merit extensive physical therapy and a long period of rest and healing. But because new mom wounds are unseen, we push ourselves to ‘get back to it’ as soon as possible. And foundational postpartum care (like having someone cook healthy meals or getting regular bodywork) is seen as an unnecessary luxury.  Kimberly Ann Johnson contends that the first six weeks after childbirth are critical to a woman’s long-term health, and the work we do recover from the physical and emotional trauma and connect with our bodies is a necessity—not an indulgence.  Today, Kimberly Ann joins me to talk about the experience of childbirth and the crucial postpartum period. We discuss the online imagery of childbirth and how it differs wildly from the experience itself. Kimberly explains the separation of body and mind in our culture and what we can do to reintegrate the two by getting to know the ‘language of sensation.’ I ask Kimberly Ann about her work as a somatic practitioner and birth doula, and she shares her take on childbirth as the domain of women. Listen in for Kimberly Ann’s insight around how to communicate your needs during childbirth and learn how to get the support you need in the fourth trimester!   FULL SHOW NOTES Get the complete show notes with episode quotes, photos, and time stamps at http://www.startuppregnant.com/094. #087 — Birth as a Portal: An Invitation   We know that pregnancy and childbirth is a time of profound transformation for women. Beyond the physical changes we experience, giving birth affords the opportunity to let go of our past selves and emerge as something new. But could birth be just as powerful for fathers and co-parents? How about our communities at large? What if everyone could tap into the wisdom and energy of new life, using it as a source of power to let go of what no longer serves us and rise up as a new iteration of our creative selves? Today, I’m taking a deep dive into the idea of birth as a portal. I describe the new research by Ruth Feldman on the neuroscience of parenthood as well as Amy Henderson’s thought leadership around the transformative power of being a present and active caregiver. Listen in for my invitation to let go of old identity markers and embrace a new way of being, drawing on the power of birth to level up and welcome a new way to show up in the world. Health Begins With Mom Podcast | For The Woman Who Is Done Surviving And Is Ready To Thrive As A Woman, Wife And A Mother

Today’s show is super juicy, super uncomfortable to talk about yet super important to talk about! We are talking about post-partum. More specifically postpartum sex! Remember yourself in the bedroom (or anywhere else for that matter) before having kids? Remember how wild and free you were? How you always found the time and energy to be intimate, how quickly and easily you got turned on? Remember the smell of your partner and how madly in love you felt after being intimate? I get goosebumps thinking back and recalling how different things were before kids came into the picture. For me, after three vaginal births (and three extra mouths to feed) things are much different now. Now we pretty much have to schedule a time in our calendars to make it happen, otherwise, there is just no time! With three young kids, sex is sort of like a chore or a to do. Now by the time kids go to bed we are exhausted and prioritize sleep over sex. After kids, I feel like we, women, sort of feel like we do our partners a HUGE favor for being intimate? Now your desire and passion for sex are not as acute as it used to be. Your hormones have changed, you have changed, your partner have changed and now is the time to go through the process, I call “adulting” which is when you realize that, although things are different now, you can still experience joy, ecstasy, pleasure and yes orgasm like a virgin! You probably won’t be able to scream like a virgin, so go ahead put a hand on your mouth, do it in the basement, laundry room or simply wait for kids to be at school, but for the love of God do not give up on sex! It is such an important and crucial piece of your mental, emotional and physical health! Today on the show I am talking with Kimberly Johnson, who is a certified Sexological Bodyworker, Somatic Experiencing practitioner, doula, post-partum recovery specialist and retired yoga teacher. She has taught workshops on the intersection of women’s sexuality and spirituality throughout Brazil, Portugal, and the United States. She is the author of the book “The Fourth Trimester: A post parturm guide to Healing Your Body, Balancing Your Emotions and Restoring Your Vitality.” She specializes in birth injury, birth trauma, and sexual healing and currently works in private practice in Solana Beach, California. Here’s what we covered on the show: Kimberly’s story and how she healed herself from a pelvic prolapse after birthing her daughter The definition of ‘sexological bodywork’ and why is it helpful for women who have experienced birth trauma The definition of a ‘somatic experiencing’ and how she uses her training to help women post-partum How to prepare for sex postpartum so both sides don’t feel disappointment? The importance of learning to orgasm from a place of connection. Nutrients and supplements to support healing post-partum. Kimberly Johnson is a yoga teacher trainer, Rolfer, women's health care advocate, mother, and doula. Much of her most recent work focuses on postpartum care. She's the author of the soon-to-be released book, The Fourth Trimester: A New Mother's Guide to Healing Your Body, Balancing Your Emotions, and Restoring Your Vitality. Motherhood is more complex than ever with women attempting to juggle career, family, and their own health often without the support of family or community that has been so much a part of the human experience up until recent times. To make things more challenging, pop-health images of pregnant moms with their baby bumps dead-lifting huge weight or doing handstands on the beach only add to the pressures on moms to try to be everything. On this week's Yoga Talk Show, Kimberly Johnson shares her personal and professional experience working with both expecting moms and new moms on their own health. ---------------- Listen & Learn: Why WHO research suggests a 8-12% C-section rate to be appropriate while USA has 32% rate and countries like China and Brazil have rates as high as 80% Why postpartum care is practically non-existent How rest is the secret ingredient missing from pre- and post-partum care How it came to be that non-mothers have become authorities on yoga for pregnancy Simple self-care and mindset shifts for mums-to-be and moms today Yoga Practice Tip of the Week: How to: Box Splits Links & References from the Show: You can find her work online at: www.KajYoga.com or www.Magamama.com Got Questions? Kimberly Ann Johnson is a dear friend and colleague, and she has been an expander and inspiration for me ever since inviting me to be on her podcast! I joined her just four days before I gave birth to Goldy Wolf, and I was in the “birth zone” so I loved sharing what it was like to be in that portal and what my hopes and dreams were for my birth (spoiler: they came true!). That was my first ever podcast interview, so really, you can think of Kimberly as my “podcast mom!” Kimberly is a Sexological Bodyworker, a Somatic Experiencing trauma resolution practitioner, a birth doula, and a single mom. She specializes in helping women prepare for birth, recover from birth injuries and birth trauma, and heal from sexual trauma. She is the author of the bestselling book The Fourth Trimester: A Postpartum Guide to Healing Your Body, Balancing Your Emotions and Restoring Your Vitality, an incredible book that I recommend to any new mom or mom-to-be! She is also the creator of Activate Your Inner Jaguar, an online course ushering women into their full voices and sexual expression.
