Today's podcast: The passing of Rex Murphy. Guest: Catherine Swift. Multi-decade friend and president of Coalition of Concerned Manufacturers and Businesses of Canada. Also member of our Beauties and the Beast panel. And: Callers, reflecting on what made Rex special.   Selina Robinson was until recently a senior cabinet minister in the British Columbia provincial NDP government of David Eby. Then her comment on a B'nai Brith organized panel show that before Israel became a state its territory was just "a crappy piece of land with nothing on it," where several hundred thousand people lived, but it didn't produce anything and didn't have an economy. The backlash to MLA Robinson's statement caused her eventual and bitter resignation from cabinet and the NDP party as she claimed antisemitism exists among NDP caucus members. Now MLA Robinson accuses premier Eby of "gaslighting" the Jewish community with empty promises to do something about antisemitism (per Vaughn Palmer in Vancouver Sun). Guest: Selena Robinson. Independent MLA, British Columbia.   Canada's system of MAID (Medical assistance in dying) is under increased international and national scrutiny and criticism. In 2021, more than 10,000 people chose to die with physician administered drugs. The question of whether mental illness is a sole qualifier for MAID was addressed in parliament, reminding that in 2015 the Supreme Court ruled adults with "a grievous and irremedial medical condition" were eligible for assisted death. Now there is growing fear people under economic strain are accessing MAID.  In 2021, more than 10,000 people accessed MAID in Canada, while at the same time the numbers of doctors engaging in providing medical assistance in dying is dropping. Meanwhile a leading United States medical ethicist is calling for MAID to immediately be adopted in the State of New York.  Guest: Dr. Arthur Caplan. Mitty Professor of Bioethics. NYU Grossman School of Medicine.  Author: Smart Mice, Not so smart People.   Split headline: Canada's divorce rate is at its lowest in 50 years. However, Fewer people are entering marriage. This according to a report from the Vanier Institute of the Family. What gives? Hold on though! There's another consideration. What is happening to couples who live together in common-law relationships, but choose not to marry? In 2021, according to the Vanier report, 22.7% of couples were living common-law and when they split up the numbers are shifted to the divorced column. In our efforts to explore these stories, we uncover some truly shocking information about the nitty-gritty of common-law relationships. Guest: Scott Taylor, Taylor Law Group, Langley, British Columbia.  --------------------------------------------- Host/Content Producer – Roy Green Technical/Podcast Producer – Tom Craig If you enjoyed the podcast, tell a friend! Hello, Line viewers and listeners! Have we told you about our Edmonton event! It's coming up. Come party with us in Alberta's capital, listen to our fun chat with great guests, join us for food and drinks. Find all the info here!In the latest episode of The Line Podcast, recorded on May 10, 2024, the Line editors start with some goings-on in the GTA, after aspiring CPC candidate (and former National Post columnist) Sabrina Maddeaux this week announced that she was suspending her effort to win the nomination in a 905 riding because of what she alleges was inappropriate interference in the campaign by party officials. Jen is skeptical, and explains why, but Matt notes that whatever the merits (or lack thereof) in Sabrina's claims, this is the second CPC would-be nominee in that part of the GTA to suspend their campaign, with the first being friend of The Line Kaveh Shahrooz. Both have had critical words for the party on the way out. Maybe it's just rookie candidates being shocked by how political politics is, but there might be something here that the party should be looking at. From there, your editors stay on politics, and talk about the recent furor over the Conservatives saying that they'd be open to using the notwithstanding clause to keep dangerous criminals behind bars. This is generally fine with both Matt and Jen, who also note that the Liberal attempts to immediately spin this into a threat to gay rights and abortion aren't the brilliant idea they think it is. "The only way to protect gay marriage is to let repeat violent offenders out on bail" is a slogan the PMO might want to run by a few more focus groups, is all they're saying. G&G also note that the Liberals are smashing the "POILIEVRE WILL BAN ABORTION" panic button awfully early, and wonder if this is the last thing the Liberals will try before Trudeau decides to talk a walk in the snow (or sand, or whatever). They touch on the encampment that remains in Toronto and that didn't last long in Calgary, and also note the passing of Rex Murphy, a former colleague of both from their National Post days. They also talk about Rex's days as a broadcaster at the CBC before he was a columnist at the Globe and the Post, and muse about what will be left of the industry once Matt and Jen eventually reach the end of their lives. Journalism has already changed so much. What's next?Very uplifting stuff, we promise. As always, like and subscribe. Become a paid subscriber to The Line at ReadtheLine.ca. This Matters is pleased to publish the year-end episode of the Toronto Star's political podcast It's Political, featuring: National Columnist Susan Delacourt, Ottawa deputy bureau chief Stephanie Levitz and reporter Mark Ramzy, who join host Althia Raj. It's been quite a tumultuous year in federal politics, from allegations of foreign interference involving China and India, to the expansion of industrial and dental subsidies, and a rejigging of public support for Canada's two main parties. We asked Toronto Star readers and “It's Political” podcast listeners for their questions — and received many probing queries about themes from the last year, especially about the influence of Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre on Canadian politics and the future of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. We gathered a few of our parliamentary journalists to answer them. Some of the clips this week were sourced from CPAC, CBC, CTV, Global, the NDP's Instagram account, Rex Murphy's Full Comment podcast and Pierre Poilievre's Facebook page.   This episode of “It's Political” was produced by Althia Raj and Michal Stein. Kevin Sexton mixed the program. Our theme music is by Isaac Joel.

In this episode: National Columnist Susan Delacourt, Ottawa deputy bureau chief Stephanie Levitz and reporter Mark Ramzy join host Althia Raj.

Special guest host Rex Murphy sits down in person with federal Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre for a year-end interview. They discuss what's behind the Tories' remarkable rise in the polls this year. Poilievre explains why he thinks Trudeau's increasingly stringent climate policies aren't what they seem. He and Rex also discuss the identity politics roiling Canadian schools. And Poilievre tells Rex what he thinks about Trudeau's latest position on Israel, and why he's accusing the prime minister of going easy on Hamas and its sponsors in Iran. On this edition of the Richard Crouse Show we meet Mark Critch. He is an actor, comedian and author, who, since 2003 has starred on the political parody show This Hour Has 22 Minutes. He's photo-bombed Justin Trudeau, offered Pamela Anderson a million dollars to stop acting, and poked fun at characters like Rex Murphy, Don Cherry and Donald Trump. The show turns thirty years old this season, making it the longest running comedy show on Canadian television. As if that wasn't enough to keep Mark busy, his other show, the hit CBC sitcom “Son of a Critch,” is now on its second season. The show is a biographical look at growing up in Newfoundland and Labrador, and in a fun twist, he plays his own father on the show. Then, we get to know Raymond Knowles, and he is the world's number one Avatar fan. To prove it, he has tattooed 95% of his body with Avatar related tats, named his Edmonton Alberta based carpentry company Mr. Avatar, and has seen the movies more times than you can count.
