Over the past 12 months, The CJN team has produced more than 700 podcast episodes, news stories, opinion pieces and foreign dispatches. The overwhelming theme has been the reverberation of Oct. 7: firebombed synagogues, gunshots at schools, anti-Zionist campus encampments, cancelled Jewish artists, a crackdown on Jewish charities—and more. But we always make sure our coverage balances heartache and hope. Throughout the year, we've also reported on the powerful resurgence of Jewish pride and engagement in Canada's spiritual and communal life—increased numbers of Jewish conversions, secular artists embracing their Jewish identities, solidarity across political lines—which gives us a cause for optimism, even while tense conversations about the Israel-Hamas war continue dividing families, colleagues and civil society at large. On today's episode of The CJN Daily, host Ellin Bessner assembles a team of CJN reporters from across the country to weigh in on the most talked-about stories of the past year and predict what we might expect in 2025. You'll hear from news editor Lila Sarick; Quebec correspondent Joel Ceausu; Western Canada correspondent Sam Margolis in Victoria, B.C.; staff reporter Jonathan Rothman, who covers Toronto city hall and culture pieces; Local Journalism Initiative reporter Mitch Consky, whose beat is campus life and education; and the producer of this very podcast, Zachary Kauffman. What we talked about: Read more about Indigo Books winning legal action to block the BDS movement's effort to boycott the retailer, in The CJN. Hear the interviews with Anthony Housefather about his decision to stay in the Liberal Party, and also our interview with Ya'ara Saks on her choice to meet with Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas, both on The CJN Daily. Canada Day is usually a holiday of patriotism and pride. But this year, nine months after Oct. 7 sparked new waves of antisemitism across the country, many Jewish Canadians continue to feel isolated, vulnerable and anxious. It seems like every few weeks, a new synagogue is attacked or vandalized; Jewish and Israeli children are being routinely bullied; open supporters of Israel can find themselves doxxed online, their businesses boycotted or alienated from their industries. To reflect on what's changed, _The CJN Daily _gathered together some of the country's leading intellectuals and newsmakers on a panel about the state of Jewish life in Canada. Their message: yes, life feels difficult. But don't give up just yet. Joining the show today are Selina Robinson, an independent MLA in the British Columbia legislature who was ousted from the NDP caucus because of the Middle East conflict; David Weinfeld, a Canadian professor of Jewish history and former CJN contributor now living in Philadelphia; Artur Wilczynski, Canada's former ambassador to Norway, just appointed the new antisemitism advisor to the University of Ottawa, now living in the nation's capital; and Rabbi Lisa Grushcow, the spiritual leader of Temple Emanu-El-Beth Sholom in Montreal. Hear our guests on past episodes of The CJN Daily: Selina Robinson explains why she quit the B.C. Independent MLA, British Columbia.   Canada's system of MAID (Medical assistance in dying) is under increased international and national scrutiny and criticism. In 2021, more than 10,000 people chose to die with physician administered drugs. The question of whether mental illness is a sole qualifier for MAID was addressed in parliament, reminding that in 2015 the Supreme Court ruled adults with "a grievous and irremedial medical condition" were eligible for assisted death. Now there is growing fear people under economic strain are accessing MAID.  In 2021, more than 10,000 people accessed MAID in Canada, while at the same time the numbers of doctors engaging in providing medical assistance in dying is dropping. All she did was tell the truth. Before she knew it, Selina Robinson was being hounded out of B.C.'s cabinet for saying the UN had allotted Jews a “crappy piece of land” in 1948, with anti-Israel activists accusing her of insulting Muslims. Robinson joins Brian this week to recount how she was first targeted weeks prior by a “vicious” mob who wanted revenge after the then post-secondary education minister criticized an overtly pro-terrorist college instructor. Robinson recounts how B.C. Premier David Eby and her former colleagues in the NDP turned betrayed her, and why she quit the party over its blindness to the antisemitism in its midst. It's been a week since Selina Robinson scorched her premier and former B.C. NDP colleagues for their “silence” after Oct. 7, and for the way they've treated the prominent Jewish politician ever since. Robinson quit the governing party on March 6—the day of her 60th birthday—releasing a blistering five-page letter. Robinson said she was heartbroken, but felt compelled to leave when her premier, David Eby rejected her “too political” offer to host a bridge-building initiative between Muslims and Jews. He'd already fired her from her cabinet post as the minister responsible for post-secondary education back in February. Her troubles began when she participated in a live webinar hosted by B'nai Brith in January, wherein she described pre-1948 Israel as a “crappy piece of land” without an economy. Despite issuing two long apologies and offering to take anti-Islamophobia training, the premier declared she had “screwed up” too badly. Since the controversy began, she's received a death threat that forced her to leave Canada for a while. Her constituency office was vandalized with posters comparing Zionism to Nazism. But Robinson vows she won't be cancelled so easily. Selina Robinson sat down with _The CJN Daily _ahead of Wednesday March 13, the day she sits in the provincial legislature for the first time as an independent MLA representing her Coquitlam-Maillardville riding in Vancouver. As a result of Justin Trudeau catering to a voter demographic he desperately needs to cling to power, it's become open season on Jews and supporters of Israel across Canada. In Episode 24, Marty Gold explains scenes from 1930's Germany in Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver. He warns, it's going to come to Winnipeg too - because our political leaders fear the mobs. We provide a snapshot of the last week with major incidents of Islamists and far-left radicals intimidating and threatening not only Jewish citizens and institutions - but a Trudeau event with the Italian Prime Minister and a Liberal Party fundraiser, both in Toronto. Trudeau claimed that pro-Palestine demonstrators were "peaceful protesters" when this started; now they are chanting antisemitic slurs, blood libels like "Gaza is a genocide", and "death to Jews". A key goal- for Trudeau to resume funding antisemitic front group UNRWA, no matter its support for Hamas and hiding kidnappers. And he caved. Part 1 - Facts the Winnipeg media don't tell the public, starting with how the January attack on Edmonton City Hall was, as we told Coun. Ross Eadie, a terrorist attack. Then we have the details about the 'student' groups bragging about stopping Trudeau's reception for Giorgia Meloni and complaining they're being 'vilified' for chasing a cabinet minister and screaming, shoving and spitting at seniors. Trudeau's "anti-Islamophobia" envoy Amira Elghawaby ran cover for the thugs. Hours later a Thornhill synagogue was targeted with noisy megaphoned chants and retched offensive signs, and the mob made police back off making an arrest for assault. 17.40 What happens when authorities do nothing? We describe the Jew-hating posters promoting an Intifada, plastered in public the next morning- and we have audio of a blockade of a Liberal fundraiser that night and harassment of donors because they "support genocide". A CUPE leader was front and centre in the melee. The intimidation extended to a Raptors game, where "Free Our Hostages" sweatshirts - advocating for kidnapped Israelis- were deemed too political for a sport that religiously parades BLM and diversity causes. 24:17 Part 2- Intentional intimidation of Jewish residents and facilities in Trudeau's town as police stood down. We have a round-up of aggressive mob incidents in Montreal at McGill University and at the oldest Synagogue in Canada- where there's a Holocaust museum. You'll hear the "pro-Palestinian" chants to kill Jews and threats of ethnic cleansing of Israel - did Winnipeg media mention it? On Wednesday, the urban terrorists targeted yet another synagogue in Toronto. Yet Trudeau's cabinet ministers lied about caring about Jewish safety and defended UNRWA. Marty provides more background on Hamas obstructing and stealing aid, creating the propaganda of "mass starvation" that helps fuel the protests. 41.50- Selina Robinson was a BC cabinet minister in January. Now she's left the party of 'inclusion' and issued a scorching letter citing antisemitic bias and a pro-Hamas slant inside the NDP caucus that has abandoned BC's Jews. “Where are you when protesters, their faces covered, march through our campuses intimidating young Jewish adults…? Where are you when young Jewish students get trapped in bathrooms? Where are your ideals of [an] inclusive society?” 48:18 Part 3 - The bigger picture is an attempt to normalize slaughter and violence under the banner of "decolonization and liberation." Marty walks through an analysis by Seth Franzman that describes the Hamas attack on October 7 at the behest of Iran and other nefarious actors "... to reset the entire Middle East and also have global ramifications... asserting that any mass killing by Hamas is acceptable... " It's "a dry run for genocide basically, to wrap genocidal massacres in the "resistance" agenda...and see if people in the West would accept this." Is that the Winnipeg and Canada we want? Send this podcast to your political leaders and ask them.

Roy L Hales/Cortes Currents - The old Surge Narrows store, on Read Island, closed its doors in 2007. A Strathcona Regional District staff report sates, “since that time the building and its associated boardwalk, floating dock and fuel shed have been left in a state of disrepair.” Last November, the SRD board applied for a $2.2 million grant to revitalize the property and was turned down. Now it looks the Surge Narrows Store Revitalization project is going forward. Starts 1:09:56 BC's Minister of Municipal Affairs, Selina Robinson, recently met with representatives from the SRD. Regional Director Jim Abram wrote, in the September 2020 issue of Surge Currents, “This year staff and the Chair of the Board had three topics for the Board to consider and vote on as the topics to be discussed. I read them prior to the meeting and noticed that there wasn't a single Rural Area issue on the list! Very upsetting since this IS our local government. So, I did the research and came up with one that I felt needed to go forward and it was directly related to this Minister's portfolio.” The Minister subsequently agreed that the Surge Narrows store project should go forward. So did the Federal Ministry. The Electoral Areas Services Committee gave its recommendation to the project at their September 16th board meeting. When the SRD meets again, on October 7th, they will decide whether to send an application to the Canada Infrastructure Program - Rural and Northern Communities grant program. According to Abram, Read Island already has the grant, “This is just the board endorsing it.” In Surge Currents, he wrote, “The grant is for $2.2 Million for the Surge Narrows revitalization project which includes an additional wharf and dock, a rebuild of the Surge Narrows Store historic property and dozens of other wonderful projects within the property that we purchased a year or so ago. It will also look at a small seniors' village to accommodate the aging population that does not want to leave: Aging in place!”
