This episode is the second to feature a cast member from Season 4 of Son of a Critch: none other than the son himself, Benjamin Evan Ainsworth. Ainsworth, of course, plays young Mark Critch, circa 1990, on the CBC sitcom. The episode was recorded last summer on location in St. John's, Nfld. Ainsworth was shooting a scene on a residential street closed off for the production. Also there was Sophia Powers, who plays Mark's girlfriend Fox.The two are trying to navigate high school this season, with scenes shot right in series' co-creator Mark Critch's old high school in St. John's.It is fun to hear Ainsworth speak in his own lilting Liverpudlian tongue during this interview. He and his famous co-star, the great Malcolm McDowell, are often at the Duke of Duckworth, cheering on their favourite football club.Ainsworth also talks about his upcoming feature film "Everything's Going to Be Great" which costars Bryan Cranston and Allison Janney.Special note: at the end of this episode, listen for a tribute to one of my high school pals, Stephen Dudley. I recently learned that this brilliant pianist, whose music can be heard on most of these episodes, passed away late last December. Here, in a cassette recording made exactly 50 years ago, he gifts a folk night crowd with one of his own compositions. Stephen was 67.
On the Saturday January 11, 2025 edition of "The Richard Crouse Show" we meet Mark Critch, star of "Son of a Critch," now entering its fourth season on CBC and CBC Gem. Developed from his 2018 memoir, “Son of a Critch,” which was in turn based on his real-life experiences growing up in Newfoundland, the series is an entertaining look into the life of a kid who is much older than his years. Young Mark is played by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, Claire Rankin (Mary, Mark's mother), Sophia Powers (friend and love interest Fox), Colton Gobbo (Mike Jr., Mark's older brother), Mark Rivera (best friend Ritche) film legend Malcolm McDowell (Pop) and Mark plays his late father, Mike Critch, a popular local radio host. The first three seasons saw young Mark face awkward crushes, near-death experiences, family tensions and grapple with needing glasses. With comedy, self-depreciation and heartfelt authenticity, the show now enters into its fourth season. Drawing heavily on his own life for inspiration Mark Critich the new season sees young Mark on the bottom rung in Grade 10. There Mark meets a teacher who ignites his love for acting, leading him to start a sketch comedy troupe, Cat Fud. His mom Mary, facing menopause and a mid-life crisis, goes back to school for a fresh start. Brother Mike Jr. embarks on a radio career, joining Magic 97, a new FM radio station, and finds himself competing with his father, Mike Sr. who struggles to feel relevant when a new owner buys the radio station VOCM. I chat with Mark, then go to the vault for an interview with his co-star, the legendary Malcolm McDowell who plays his grandfather on the show.

Based on Mark's best-selling memoir of the same name, Mark plays his own father, Mike Critch, a reporter for a Newfoundland radio station called VOCM. Benjamin plays a fictionalized younger version of Mark Critch, a preteen, who is much older on the inside than his years. The show also stars Malcolm McDowell as Pop Critch, Mark Critch's grandfather and Claire Rankin as Mark's mother. In Son of A Critch Season 3, Mark faces a near-death experience, business ventures, and explores stand-up, culminating in a reflective night with friends before saying goodbye to middle school. Then, we'll get to know Adam Garcia. You'll remember him as Kevin O'Donnell the Australian heartthrob in Coyote Ugly, who, after one striptease scene at the bar, becomes the boyfriend of Violet, played by Piper Perabo. He is also an Olivier Award nominated stage star, and television actor who is best known for lead roles in musicals such as Saturday Night Fever and Kiss Me, Kate. We talk about how being an anatomical model gave him a sense of being on stage, how The Rocky Horror Picture Show changed the direction of his life and his starring role in 42nd Street, now playing on stage at the Princess of Wales Theatre in Toronto.

After last week's conversation around Walt's second EVER animated feature, we visit the Disney Studios' latest attempt at re-telling this classic story. Sadly, this version failed to impress and create the long-lasting experience we all had with the original. Nevertheless, we dissect the good and the bad of this modern version. Disney's Pinnochio is rated PG and was released September 8, 2022 This film stars Tom Hanks as Geppeto, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Jiminy Cricket and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Pinocchio. Holy Smokeo! There were two major Pinocchio films that came out late this year and we opted for the most painful one! Director Robert Zemeckis, the genius behind the movie Welcome to Marwen (2018), has returned with a direct-to-Disney-Plus live-action remake of Walt Disney's beloved 1940 animated film Pinocchio. We knew this one was gonna hurt, but we were unprepared for the level of pain Zemeckis was going to inflict upon us this time. Will this $150 million soulless production finally put an end to Zemeckis's career?! Probably not! Tom Hanks is Geppetto, Benjamin Evan Ainsworth is the voice of Pinocchio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt is the voice of Jiminy Cricket, Keegan-Michael Key is the voice of "Honest" John, Cynthia Erivo is The Blue Fairy, and Lorraine Bracco is the voice of a new seagull character called Sofia. Brace yourselves for Pinocchio and have a Happy New Year! Holy Smokeo!

Malcolm McDowell has a knack for being in the right place at the right time. Growing up in Liverpool in the early ‘60s, he took his girlfriend to see The “Silver” Beatles at the Cavern Club. By the end of the decade, he was one of the beautiful people swingin' through London as the star of Lindsay Anderson's “If….” and "O Lucky Man." In 1971, he drew raves for his electric performance in Stanley Kubrick's “A Clockwork Orange.”Fifty years later, he feels like a "Lucky Man" all over again for landing in Canada on CBC's breakout comedy hit, “Son of a Critch.”McDowell loved shooting in Newfoundland and immediately bonded with his young British co-star, Benjamin Evan Ainsworth. He praises the scripts along with the book the series was spun off from: Mark Critch's memoir about growing up eccentric on Canada's East Coast. And what a life he has led in-between. Listen as McDowell tells story after story about the famous stage and film folk he has known, including three Sirs: Laurence Olivier, Ralph Richardson and John Guilgud. Other names dropped include Peter Sellers, Robert Altman, Robert Mitchum, Michael Caine and George Harrison. At 78, he's never been busier, having just finished shooting a movie with two actors he adores: Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin. He's got stories about them, too. This is a podcast you don't want to miss.
This week on the Richard Crouse Show we'll meet the cast of a new CBC Television show called “Son of a Critch.” If you are a fan of the political commentary and social satire of “This Hour Has 22 Minutes,” you already know Mark Critch. Since 2003 he has starred on the political parody show. He's photo-bombed Justin Trudeau, offered Pamela Anderson a million dollars to stop acting, and poked fun at characters like Rex Murphy, Don Cherry and Donald Trump. His latest project is much more personal. A couple years ago Mark wrote a warm and funny look back at his formative years, growing up in St. John's, Newfoundland in the 80s called “Son of a Critch: A Childish Newfoundland Memoir”. That bestseller is now the basis of Son of a Critch, which airs on CBC television and CBC Gem on Tuesday nights. Later in the show we'll meet Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, who plays the eleven year old Mark on the show, and we'll spend some time with the legendary actor Malcolm McDowell, the star of “A Clockwork Orange” and so many other films, and who plays Mark's grandfather. McDowell talks about his new found love of Newfoundland and offers advice to young actors.
