Minnesota Attorney Shelley Torvinen finally found us in the big city (Chicago) after a  long drive to our virtual studio*.  With a promise of hot chocolate and plenty of encouragement, we coaxed her from her car, walked her through our weed-strewn parking lot, and down the stairs past a creaky iron door, to a rusty office chair.  We cleared away a pile of spiders and dust, gave her a seat at the table with us, and then applied our usual psychological pressure.  In this Episode 44, recorded on March 12, 2025 by the light of a Coleman gas lantern and between bites of Norwegian lutefisk (in honor of our Minnesota guest,) Shelley did not wilt under our interrogation.  It's clear that Shelley, despite laboring in the trenches for over 30 years, has not lost her enthusiasm and compassion for the practice of family law.  We spent an hour jabbering about situations, stories, hints and creative ideas -- and family law and procedures in three states (Illinois, Minnesota and Wisconsin.)   Hopefully, our non-lawyer listeners will find our wide-ranging discussion to be useful and helpful!Attorney Shelley Torvinen practices in Northern Minnesota and Wisconsin, handling family-law cases in courtrooms and courthouses big and small, far and wide.  To schedule a consultation, and maybe be treated to hot chocolate and lutefisk, visit her website at www.wiscotalm.com or call her at (218) 625-2239.                     ==================About the hosts of 'Dynamite Divorce and Other Matters," a project spanning over four years:Chicago Lawyers Marjie Nielsen, Barry C. I love episodes with my scholarly friends who repeatedly return to the podcast, but for this nerd, I am thrilled to introduce listeners to scholars who rocked my world. In this episode, I talk with a legend in science and religion, Dr. Robert McCauley. He is a pioneer in the cognitive science of religion, and his work has greatly impacted the academic community. It was an honor to unpack so many themes in his work and I can't wait for y'all to hear it! Robert N. He is the author of Why Religion Is Natural and Science Is Not and Philosophical Foundations of the Cognitive Science of Religion. He is also the co-author, with E. Robert McCauley is the Kenan University Professor of Philosophy at Emory University with associated appointments in psychology, religion, and anthropology. In his view, our minds are better suited to religious belief than to scientific inquiry because the explanations that religion provides make intuitive sense to us and engage our natural cognitive systems, while science involves abstract thinking and forms of reflection that require a lot of mental work. His books include “Hearing Voices and Other Matters of Mind,” and “Why Religion Is Natural and Science Is Not.”Greg and Robert discuss a number of topics in this episode including contamination management systems, cognitive fluidity, and developing intuition.Episode Quotes:Religions & natural systemsBecause these systems are natural, cognitively natural, because they're intuitive, because they're automatic, because they're instantaneous, it just means that folks instantly know how to manage them. They don't need to be taught that God thinks about certain things, certain ways. Or that if he thinks about certain things, certain ways that he must want certain outcomes to, you know, go in one direction as opposed to another. Those are inferences that are just automatic. On scienceScience, it seems to me is something that also has certain cognitively natural dimensions to it.What is religionI actually don't offer any definitions of religion. I'm really not interested in definitions of religion, I'm not worried about that. What I'm interested in is cognition and how it Impacts whole host of systems out there in the world that we call “religions.”Show Links:Recommended Resources:Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman Dan SperberStephen Jay Gould - WikipediaMichael McCloskey | Cognitive Science | Johns Hopkins UniversityJustin BarrettFrank Keil | Department of PsychologyShane Frederick | Yale School of ManagementProfessor Sir Simon Baron-Cohen - Autism Research CentreGuest Profile:Faculty Profile at Emory CollegeProfessional Profile at Psychology TodayRobert McCauley's WebsiteRobert McCauley on LinkedInHis Work:Robert McCauley on Google ScholarRobert McCauley on Psychology TodayHearing Voices and Other Matters of the Mind: What Mental Abnormalities Can Teach Us About ReligionsPhilosophical Foundations of the Cognitive Science of Religion: A Head Start Why Religion is Natural and Science is NotBringing Ritual to Mind: Psychological Foundations of Cultural

Ruach Breath of Life

Time and again the Lord's sweet presence steals over us, often when we are expecting it the least, or are in greatest need of it. He comes quite unexpectedly, sometimes when we know ourselves to be in great need of receiving a fresh touch from Him. As the melody of this piece passes from one instrument to another, and the strings play a joyful pizzicato, may it release fresh joy into our own hearts. Musicians: Nicola Gerrard, Francis Cummings, Philippa Barton, Christiane Mueller, Jo Garcia How kind the Lord is –and how well He knows what people used to call ‘our mortal frame.' Life can sometimes bring us so many unexpected challenges and tumbles, with a result that we can end up as it were holding our breath and feeling afraid to laugh in case tomorrow's trials prove still more sever. But the Lord's grace is always fresh, and it is good to laugh and not fear sheer joy and pleasure. “Laugh and fear not, creatures,” Aslan urges the newly created talking animals of Narnia. “Now that you are no longer dumb and witless, you need not always be grave. For jokes as well as justice come in with speech!” (CS Lewis, The Magician's Nephew, Chapter 10, The First Joke and Other Matters.) I have dedicated this piece to ‘Gioja,' an unusual spelling of the Italian word for joy. Despite all that is serious and can even be grievous in life, the joy of the Lord remains our strength.

Dr. George Graham is former Professor of Philosophy at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and Georgia State University, and the AC Reid Professor of Philosophy at Wake Forest University. They are both authors of a recent book, Hearing Voices and Other Matters of the Mind: What Mental Abnormalities Can Teach Us About Religions. In this episode, we focus on their book. We start by covering some of the concepts that they explore in the book, like ecumenical naturalism and purpose-driven continuity theory. We talk about the continuity between religious cognition, normal cognition and mental disorders, and what happens when mental disorders manifest in a religious context. We also discuss mental disorders more generally, and ask if they are illnesses, and if they are cultural. We tackle the issue of by-product, adaptation, and cultural group selection approaches to religion. We then go through the mental disorders covered in the book. We start with a condition that is also experienced by normal people: hallucinatory voices. We then talk about depression, Obsessive-compulsive disorder, and autism. Finally, we discuss if we really need to study people's beliefs to understand religious phenomena, and end with how the framework laid-out in the book can be applied to studying terrorism, and in a clinical context. -- A HUGE THANK YOU TO MY PATRONS/SUPPORTERS: KARIN LIETZCKE, ANN BLANCHETTE, PER HELGE LARSEN, LAU GUERREIRO, JERRY MULLER, HANS FREDRIK SUNDE, BERNARDO SEIXAS, HERBERT GINTIS, RUTGER VOS, RICARDO VLADIMIRO, BO WINEGARD, CRAIG HEALY, OLAF ALEX, PHILIP KURIAN, JONATHAN VISSER, ANJAN KATTA, JAKOB KLINKBY, ADAM KESSEL, MATTHEW WHITINGBIRD, ARNAUD WOLFF, TIM HOLLOSY, HENRIK AHLENIUS, JOHN CONNORS, PAULINA BARREN, FILIP FORS CONNOLLY, DAN DEMETRIOU, ROBERT WINDHAGER, RUI INACIO, ARTHUR KOH, ZOOP, MARCO NEVES, MAX BEILBY, COLIN HOLBROOK, SUSAN PINKER, THOMAS TRUMBLE, PABLO SANTURBANO, SIMON COLUMBUS, PHIL KAVANAGH, JORGE ESPINHA, CORY CLARK, MARK BLYTH, ROBERTO INGUANZO, MIKKEL STORMYR, ERIC NEURMANN, SAMUEL ANDREEFF, FRANCIS FORDE, TIAGO NUNES, BERNARD HUGUENEY, ALEXANDER DANNBAUER, OMARI HICKSON, PHYLICIA STEVENS, FERGAL CUSSEN, YEVHEN BODRENKO, HAL HERZOG, NUNO MACHADO, DON ROSS, JOÃO ALVES DA SILVA, JONATHAN LEIBRANT, JOÃO LINHARES, OZLEM BULUT, NATHAN NGUYEN, STANTON T, SAMUEL CORREA, ERIK HAINES, MARK SMITH, J.W., JOÃO EIRA, TOM HUMMEL, SARDUS FRANCE, DAVID SLOAN WILSON, YACILA DEZA-ARAUJO, IDAN SOLON, ROMAIN ROCH, DMITRY GRIGORYEV, DIEGO LONDOÑO CORREA, TOM ROTH, AND YANICK PUNTER! “A psychoanalytic consultant is really the enemy of people ignoring the role that the unconscious has in their lives, just denying that there is an unconscious effect on their rationally selected behavior. I strongly believe that the interferences from the unconscious can be minimized by a consultant, just as we can minimize the irrational influence on patients in our work with mental illness.”   Description: Steven S. Rolfe welcomes Dr. David Sachs to this episode. Dr. David Sachs is the Clinical Professor of Mental Health Sciences Emeritus, at Hahnemann University and a training and supervisory analyst at the Psychoanalytic Center of Philadelphia. He was chair of the American Psychoanalytic Association Committee on New Training Facilities from 1976 to 1984, Vice President of the APA from 1995 to 1997, and IPA New Training and Facilities member and chair from 1993 to 2012.   Dr. David Sachs is one of our pioneers, he has worked off the couch from a relatively early time in his career and we will hear today about how his interest in business and organizational consulting grew and was deeply influenced by his training and experience as a psychoanalyst.   Key takeaways: [3:15] How Dr. David Sachs’ training and experience prepared him to consult with businesses. [4:00] Analyst’s skills applied to consulting with people in the business world. [5:17] How Dr. Sachs views have shifted about Psychoanalysis over the years. [7:03] Difference between analysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy in consulting to businesses. [9:10] How Dr. Sachs colleagues responded to his interest in applied psychoanalysis. It's the ultimate REFRESH button." —Elizabeth Gilbert With 2018 just two weeks away, I am, as I am with each new years, inclined to be quite excited for a fresh start. No matter what the current year shared with me, surprised or delighted me with, the gift of a chance to improve is a priceless opportunity that only arrives once every 365 days. And so, I readily choose to seize it and apply what I have learned over the past 12 months and put it to practice, to improve upon who I reveal myself to be the previous year. As I look ahead to the new year with plans to finally get back to France since far too long ago (2013), I couldn't help but look to my collection of French living and culture books which I didn't fully realized is as plentiful as it turned out to be in my personal library (a sampling captured recently of many of my French themed books) for inspiration as to how to step forward into 2018. Below I've gathered 18 quotes of wisdom, insights and inspiration for beginning anew, renewed and brilliantly rested and ready to make 2018 the year we wish it to be. You Know More Than You Realize 1."a quarter to a third of all English words come from French, and good thing; otherwise, learning this language would be even harder than it is." —William Alexander in Flirting with French: How a Language Charmed Me, Seduced Me & Nearly Broke My Heart   Read Books Like You Need Them to Breathe 2. "France retains a reverence for the printed book. As independent bookstores crash and burn in the United States, the market here is healthier, largely thanks to government protections that treat the stores as national treasures . . . in France, booksellers —including Amazon —may not discount books more than 5 percent below the publisher's list price." —Elaine Sciolino in The Only Street in Paris: Life on the Rue des Martyrs   The Gift of a Balanced Life is a Beautiful Life to Savor 3. "So here is a trilogy: food/movement/know thyself. Again, these are important elements in my life and also in the lives of French women who don't get fat (and perhaps do not want or need facelifts)." —Mireille Guiliano in French Women Don't Get Facelifts: The Secret of Aging with Style & Attitude    Trust Your Journey, and As You Travel, Just Be Yourself 4. "'Seize the moment . . . pay attention to your life right now' . . . What I failed to see, sitting around the coffee table on those nights, was the possibility that I didn't have to keep looking for a family to belong to; I could create one of my own. I had conflated my deep need to belong to something bigger than myself with a more superficial need to fit in, to look and dress and act like others. But fitting in is not belonging. This seems so clear now, but at the time I didn't understand the difference. I was still floating between New York and Paris, at least in the sense that my identity was tied to both cities. I lived in New York and worked at a New Yorker's pace, but I couldn't let go of Paris —Paris, which had shaped me more deeply than college or even my Manhattan childhood. Returning to Paris felt as if I was reawakening some part of myself that had been asleep since I'd left." —Kate Betts in My Paris Dream: An Education in Style, Slang and Seduction in the Great City on the Seine   On Style: Mix It Up 5. "Forget the 'total look.' Frenchwomen love to mix and match. Pascale Camart, womenswear buying manager for the Galeries Lafayette, told me that having designer labels next to ordinary ones on the same floor was 'on purpose. The Frenchwoman likes to put different things together.' The Parisienne, she says, doesn't buy evening dresses. She sticks with basics and then finds the one distinctive jacket or scarf or top that will make the ensemble a knockout." —Harriet Welty Rochefort in Joie de Vivre: Secrets of Wining, Dining and Romancing Like the French   The Importance of Elevating the Everyday 6. " You don't go overboard, exhausting yourself over the holidays when you make every day an occasion for friendship and family, fun and celebration." —Jamie Cat Callan in Bonjour, Happiness: Secrets to Finding Your Joie de Vivre   Choose Quality in Your Food and in Your Life to Elevate the Experience 7. "Édith Piaf famously sang, Non, je ne regrette rien ('No, I regret nothing'). Although I have my share of regrets, using good chocolate to make a soufflé is never one of them." —David Lebovitz in L'Appart: The Delights and Disasters of Making My Paris Home   Let Your Body Tell You What It Needs and Listen 8. "She knows exactly what she has 'a taste' for, and once she's had enough, that's it. She eats what she wants, when she wants it, until she is satisfied. Food is not a moral or emotional issue for her. She does not describe foods as good or bad; to her they are neutral, just food." —Carol Cottrill in The French Twist: Twelve Secrets of Decadent Dining and Natural Weight Management   The Essence of Real Beauty Goes Beyond the Surface 9. "Style without substance is unacceptable, largely because it's boring, one-dimensional. In France, it's inadmissible to provoke ennui. Real style is built upon a solid foundation of informed intelligence, quick wit, and an impressive panopoly of culture references. One must hold her own in a lively conversation. The essence of beauty is to continue educating oneself and constantly to learn something new. Simply put: these are the keys to eternal youth." Tish Jett in Forever Chic: Frenchwomen's Secrets for Timeless Beauty, Style and Substance   Keep Persevering to Create More 'Luck' in Your Life 10. "Persevering is often not simply a matter of working hard and refusing to quit; often, by trying again, failing again, and failing better, we inadvertently place ourselves in the way of luck. Yet another reason to keep on keeping on." —Karen Karbo in Julia Child Rules: Lessons on Savoring Life   Cooking Need Not Be Complicated & Thus an Necessary Element of Socializing Well in Everyday Life 11. "Yes, Parisians have more fun when they go out. But they're also ten times less likely to eat out. And in Paris, there's no ordering in —you cook. It's simple cooking, really: You can have five friends over, create a fast, delicious pasta with zucchini and mint. Or you just buy cheese, figs, wine and call it a night." — Garance Doré in Love, Style, Life   Opening Your World to Other Languages & Cultures Deepens Appreciation and Perspective 12. "Linguists call America 'the graveyard of languages' because of its singular ability to take in millions of immigrants and extinguish their native languages in a few generations. A study of thirty-five nations found that 'in no other country . . . did the rate of the mother tongue shift toward (English) monolingualism approach the radity of that found in the United States.' Immigrants to America lose languages quickly; natives of America fail to acquire them. Only 18 percent of American schoolchildren are enrolled in foreign language courses, while 94 percent of European high-school students are studying English." —Lauren Collins in When in French: Love in a Second Language   Incorporate the Arts into Your Life 13. "As often as you can, take an evening off and seek out the arts. Attend the ballet, visit an art show at your local coffee shop, go see an independent theatre, attend a symphony performance or a rock concern. These moments are often too few and far between, especially when family and work life seem to always come first. Indulging in the pleasure of the arts feels decadent and is a magnificent way to recharge your soul. Purchase your tickets in advance. Knowing that you are going to attend the ballet in three weeks gives you something delightful to look forward to." — Jennifer L. Scott in At Home with Madame Chic   Luck is Hard Earned 14. "In truth, her luck was not yet finished. Not even close. These two daring shipments were to make her one of the most famous women in Europe and her wine one of the most highly prized commodities of the nineteenth century. As Louis told her, it was a succes born out of 'your judicious manner of operating, your excellent wine, and the marvelous similarity of your ideas, which produced the most splendid unity and action and execution — we did it well, and I give a million thanks to the bounty of the divine Providence who saw fit to make me one of his instrument in your future well-being . . . certainly you merit all the glory possible after your misfortunes, your perseverance, and your obvious talents.'" —Tilar J. Mazzeo in The Widow Clicquot: The Story of a Champagne Empire and the Woman Who Ruled It   On What Is Worth Appreciating and Savoring 15. "The weight of history means that the French don't wipe the slate clean to make way for progress the way Americans do. Because of their centuries-old attachment to the land, restriction is their second nature, not expansion. The French have completely different ideas about what's public and what's private, and those ideas influence how they think about money, morality, eating, manners, conversation, and even political accountability. The French glorify what's elevated and grand, not what's common and accessible. They value form as much as content. And finally, they created many of their instituions to try to deal with the after-affects of two major wars. These factors don't add up to a neat picture that diametrically opposes French and Anglo-Americans. They just explain a lot about why the French think the way they do. Unless Americans recognize these differences, they will never understand the French." —Jean-Benoît Nadeau & Julie Barlow in Sixty Million Frenchmen Can't Be Wrong: Why We Love France, but Not the French   Stop and Nourish Your Body & Mind Daily 16. "No matter how fraught our workload, we stop and have a proper meal. It helps us calm our brains and bodies, and we know we will work more efficiently afterward." —Mathilde Thomas in The French Beauty Solution: Time-Tested Secrets to Look and Feel Beautiful Inside and Out   The Importance of Quality Living for the Individual Living It, Not for Outward Applause 17. "Ambition—another virtue that becomes a vice when taken too seriously. Time is not money for the French. It's an ephemeral currency and should be spent doing the things that make life worth living. Remember, the French woman might have an acute sense of breveity of time and the immediacy of pleasure; that said, she also has a strong predilection to enjoy not only the finer things in life but the things that make life fine." —Debra Ollivier in What French Women Know: About Love, Sex and Other Matters of the Heart and Mind   Let Your Dreams Lead the Way and Never Stop Striving Forward 18. "Willa Carter believed that if you have a wish for something from a young age and you nourish it, if you continually make an effort to nurture this wish and stay connected to this dream, then you will live a fulfilled life. If you believe in something, it invests everything you do with meaning. Paris has always stayed with me, close to me, and I've continually felt nourished by it." —Kate Betts in My Paris Dream: An Education in Style, Slang, and Seduction in the Great City on the Seine   At the core of living well is appreciating the value of now and tempering longings and future hopes so that we are soley living in the future. Our lives are indeed right now. Just for a moment, examine where you were in your life one year ago today, now five years ago, now 10. Could you have precisely known where you would be when looking toward the future as your younger self? Halley Hiatt released the visual for “Other Matters,” the second single off her upcoming Debut EP, "Retrograde.” “Other Matters" is dark and moody, but also inquisitive…Hiatt poses questions using metaphors to portray broad points of view open to interpretation and individual relation.  “Retrograde” will be available for download next month.  Halley Hiatt is a Singer Songwriter of Lebanese, French, and Native American decent that hails from Upstate NY but now resides in Bushwick, BK. Her sound is a unique hybrid that can best be described as a mix of R&B and Electro Pop.   Her brand new track, “Other Matters” was produced by Rodney Hazard and MP Williams (A$AP Rocky). Its a reflective, thought provoking track riddled with metaphors on life and the things we allow to the world to make us believe when we are momentarily lost.    “Other Matters” is reflecting on those times we get so wrapped up in work/and or superficial things that we lose sight of what's really important? and what matters in the end." - Halley Hiatt

The Lord has blessed Grace in grand measure over the course of the past years. Yet we must always desire that our best days for Christ are yet to come. But how will we be effective? The answer is: Our corporate effectiveness for Christ will depend on our individual commitment to Christ. In the last 2 chapters of Philippians, Paul gives a number of areas for Christ-followers to consider as they think through becoming more and more intentional in walking “in a manner that is worthy of Christ.”

This weekend we end one year and bring in the next. As always, we are thankful for what God has done in the past, and expectant for what He will choose to do in the future. But regardless of what the circumstances of our lives may bring some things never change. Our Lord Christ has called us to be His church. He has rescued us from the domain of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of Jesus Christ His son. But He doesn’t expect us to sit comfortably in the confines of the Kingdom and watch as others remain broken and desperate in the darkness. Rather, He has outfitted us with the armor of the Spirit and commissioned us to go back into the dark world as agents of light and transformation. The mission by which He rescued us has now become the mission of our lives. The only question is: Will we take up the challenge? Fundamental to our success in the mission of Christ is an understanding of what sort of people, and what sort of church we are to be. This weekend we take up this subject and find that Paul has covered it very well in his first letter to a young pastor in Ephesus, Timothy. His words, as true now as then, provide a constant reminder that there is not, and never has been in the mind of God, any antagonism between the mind and the heart, between belief and behavior. While both are necessary, neither is sufficient by itself. To accomplish the mission of Christ through Grace to the world be must be a church where people care and truth matters. Nothing less can be tolerated; nothing less will be used mightily by God.

Having just returned from visiting and teaching in India, I am excited to share with you what I believe are important truths we can learn from our Indian brothers and sisters. Their following of Christ is greatly different from ours, and there is much about their simplicity and sobriety that we need to imitate. They have very simple, yet profound views on the call to be salt and light in a dark and broken world. They are very serious about the call to follow Christ, regardless of the obstacles. And behind all of their belief lies an unshakable joy that flows from their understanding that God has promised to do something quite significant through them in this world. In fact, they define significance by what their lives ultimately end up contributing to the reach of the Kingdom among their people. My intent is not to browbeat us with guilt, but to encourage us to join in the battle, to catch the vision that God intends to do something great through us in our world, and now is the time to pray and prepare.
