The question of how to improve dog obedience boils down to one thing: in the eyes of your dog, who is in charge? When no leadership is in place, dogs usually take on the role of the leader... and this paves the way for bad behavior issues to arise. I always tell dog owners that if they want to see a significant improvement in dog obedience, they HAVE TO BE THE LEADERS. And Rule Number Three of the Doggy Dan Five Golden Rules — DOING EVERYTHING ON YOUR OWN TERMS — helps dog owners become just that: the leaders dogs respect and trust. But what exactly does “DOING EVERYTHING ON YOUR OWN TERMS” mean? What does it entail? And why is it such a CRUCIAL rule? Read on to learn more. Key Takeaways The dog who feels they can invade and control your space will be very protective of you because they feel that they're in charge. This is where behavior issues come in. Doing EVERYTHING ON YOUR TERMS helps establish that you're in charge, and you're the one calling the shots. Rule Number Three encourages dog owners to be the ULTIMATE decision makers for everything that involves their dogs. From feeding, to affection, to leisure, exercise — everything should be your call! LEARN HOW TO IMPROVE DOG OBEDIENCE WITH THE DOG CALMING CODE™️ Table of Contents: How to Improve Dog Obedience: Recap of Doggy Dan Golden Rule Number 1 and Rule Number 2 Rule Number Three: How To Improve Dog Obedience By Doing Everything On Your Terms How to Improve Dog Obedience: The Story of a Woman with an Aggressive Dog How to Improve Dog Obedience: The Dog Psychology Behind Rule Number Three If Dog Obedience Training Gets Hard, Remember These 4 Reasons Why Rule Number Three Is a Must-Do Conclusion: Learn How to Improve Dog Obedience + The Powerful Doggy Dan Five Golden Rules with the Dog Calming Code How to Improve Dog Obedience: Recap of Doggy Dan Golden Rule #1 and Rule #2 The common factor between these two rules are taking control and being the leader in your relationship with your dog. You see, most behavior issues come from dog owners not putting these rules in place. And through the lens of dog psychology, without these rules, your dog has no other choice but to be the leader instead. So here's why Rule Number One and Rule Number Two are essential pillars in dog training. Rule #1 of Doggy Dan's Five Golden Rules: Controlling the Food The goal of Rule Number One is to help dog owners understand that for dogs, FOOD IS NOT JUST FOOD. The power of food is HUGE and dog owners can really use their dog's daily meals to teach BIG lessons. Dogs regard FOOD as a treasure. It's their lifeline. When they have it, life could not be better. FOOD IS EVERYTHING! And when you take control of the food, it sends a powerful message to your dog about who is really in charge. IMPROVE DOG OBEDIENCE WITH THE RIGHT FOUNDATION, CHECK OUT DOG CALMING CODE NOW Rule #2 of Doggy Dan's Five Golden Rules: Delaying Acknowledgment After Separation Rule Number Two is inspired by how wolves operate in the wild. Every after separation, wolves would go to their leader NOT TO SHOW AFFECTION but to actually see if the Alpha is still capable of providing food and protecting the pack. Our dogs are domesticated, but they still operate like this! Some dog owners would say “My dog is just so affectionate. They just want to reconnect with me.” In the eyes of your dog, it's a different story. They're also checking on you, eager to see if you truly are a capable leader. Delaying acknowledgment or attention is like an Alpha's way of assuring the other pack members “Don't challenge me. I am still the leader.” Rule #3: How To Improve Dog Obedience By Doing Everything On Your Terms In the first two rules, we really stress the idea that your pup should see you as their food provider and as the confident leader who can handle anything that comes their way. For Rule #3, the golden rule is EVERYTHING ON YOUR TERMS What does it mean? In every interaction, only two things can happen: you do everything on your terms OR your dog gets the upper hand and does things on their terms. Being in control and being in charge DOES NOT STOP with food and affection. Decisions like where to go, what to do, where to potty, when to give hugs and pats, and when to train, are your call. It's like this: your dog should know when it comes to decision making, YOUR word is the green light. BE THE LEADER IN YOUR DOG'S EYES WITH THE DOG CALMING CODE™️ Why? Why does it matter that YOU give the go signal for everything? Because dogs ARE ALWAYS LOOKING OUT FOR THE ONE WHO IS IN CONTROL. They are also VERY PARTICULAR WITH HIERARCHY. Dogs actually play mind games with us. A dog's cuddles and bid for attention, DO NOT ALWAYS MEAN AFFECTION. It's always their way to check if YOU ARE A WORTHY LEADER. You can counter these games by showing to your dog “No, in this house, I call the shots. Everything's on my own terms.” However, in my years as a top dog trainer, I have seen a lot of dog owners fall into the trap of letting their dog INVADE THEIR SPACE. DOGS KNOW SPACE and they know getting into your space means they're challenging your leadership. Here's a quick example... Let's say your dog is being affectionate to you. They come up to you and start licking your arms for attention or a pat, or they jump up to share your seat. Now, giving them a pat or a cuddle SEEMS HARMLESS, RIGHT? But this is where most dog owners get it wrong: the moment you give in to ANY request, you are letting them invade your space without your consent. Your dog will think they're in charge. After all, THEY requested, and YOU answered. It's telling your dog that they — not you — are the actual leader. LEARN MORE ABOUT THE DOGGY DAN GOLDEN RULE #3 WITH THE DOG CALMING CODE How Rule #3 of the Doggy Dan Five Golden Rules Improve Dog Obedience by Communicating YOUR Leadership Here's a quick disclaimer: I AM NOT SUGGESTING YOU COMPLETELY IGNORE REQUESTS FROM YOUR DOG. In truth, I encourage you to listen to your dog's needs. Our dogs require love, food, and plenty of playtime from us! And as dog owners, that's our responsibility. However, the general rule here is EVERYTHING MUST BE ON YOUR OWN TERMS. You can give your dog a treat, or a hug or a pat WITHOUT indulging to your dog's every request. You are NOT going to deny food, but YOU control when to give the food, what to give, and how to discipline a dog's approach to mealtimes. Of course, you can play with your dog! But making the decision what to play, when to play it, where to play it is yours alone to make. When you do this, there will come a MAJOR shift to how your dog views you and themselves. DOG CALMING CODE: HOW TO BECOME THE LEADER IN YOUR DOG'S EYES! The dog — the rowdy, restless, anxious, aggressive, and even resistant one — who previously saw themselves as the Alpha will start to look up to you, THEIR BELOVED LEADER! How to Improve Your Dog's Obedience: The Story of a Woman with an Aggressive Dog I received a phone call one day from a woman who called me about a concern she had with her aggressive German Shepherd. Her dog had barking issues and was very aggressive to anyone getting near the property! The family was seriously considering putting him down. She was a smart dog owner who was already following Rule #1 and Rule #2. But she was still having major issues and her dog had started to bite strangers. “What would you do, Dan? My big dog is still aggressive to everyone!” I then asked if the dog was constantly asking for pats and cuddles. “Hang on! Yes my big dog loves asking for pats and cuddles! All the time!” I immediately knew what was wrong. He was always being rewarded whenever he invaded her space and demanded attention! Remember: a dog who feels can freely invade and control your space is far more likely to over protect you and react to anything that comes near you. This explains her dog's aggression, and why the dog bites! He felt like he was in charge and was being very protective of his owner! LEARN MORE ABOUT DOGGY DAN'S FIVE GOLDEN RULES WITH THE DOG CALMING CODE! I told her to put Rule #3 in place. EVERYTHING should be on her terms. A day or two after the call she cancelled her appointment, so I rang her up to check on what happened. “It worked, Dan! His aggression stopped after I followed your suggestions. Not giving in to his requests has changed him!” I can still hear the excitement and disbelief in her voice! What made the difference? Through Rule #3, she was able to let him know “Hey, I can handle myself. Thank you, but I don't need protecting.” Can you imagine? The dog who was previously chasing and biting people, and barking excessively around the property, FINALLY calmed down! How to Improve Dog Obedience: The Dog Psychology Behind Rule #3 These are three of the biggest reasons why Rule #3 resonates with our dogs. Dogs Always Check for the Leader For dogs, hierarchy makes them feel that everything in life is right and in order. Dogs thrive in packs... after all, they share 99.998% of their genes with wolves! And because they belong in packs, having a leader is a must. Our dogs are relentless when it comes to keeping the leader in check. The leader must be capable of protecting and providing. It's a risk if they're not! This leadership check-up continues even with our domesticated dogs. One of the BEST WAYS to tell your dog “I'm fine, I can lead” — inspired by dog psychology — is to call the shots and do everything on your terms. When your dogs can depend on you and your decisions, they will trust you as their leader. DOGS NEED YOU TO BECOME THE LEADER! LEARN HOW WITH THE DOG CALMING CODE! Dogs Naturally Assume the Role of the Leader The moment they get into your home, dogs naturally seek out who's in charge. You can see this in the way they challenge everybody. You might think “Did I get a bad dog?” The answer is NO. It's simply this: the dog has assumed the responsibility of being charge, and feel the need to control everything that's happening around YOU. If they don't see you in control of their food, you are not the leader. If they can easily invade your space, you are not the leader. If you give in to requests, you are not the leader. So what choice do our dogs have? BECOME THE LEADER INSTEAD. AND BECAUSE LEADERSHIP MEANS PROTECTING YOU, your dog is always uneasy, and even anxious. They may resort to barking and leash pulling, and can show more signs of separation anxiety. Leadership is ESSENTIAL for dogs to thrive, and if the dog can't get it from you, they will assume it. Dogs Don't See Us As Equals And because dogs don't see us as equals, they can easily feel that they're ABOVE us. Obedience problems come up, they don't respond to your call, and no matter what you do they remain aggressive. You can nip the problem in the bud with the Five Golden Rules of leadership in place. AND I KNOW IT'S HARD! I empathize with that: you love your dogs, you want to shower them with all the love! DOG CALMING CODE: THE ONLINE DOG TRAINING PROGRAM FOR IMPROVING DOG OBEDIENCE But your dog DOESN'T SEE YOU AS THEIR EQUAL. It's either you're the alpha, or simply a pack member who needs all the guarding and protection. Dogs are not inherently bad; they don't disobey just because. Leadership is simply not there. If Dog Obedience Training Gets Hard, Remember These 4 Reasons Why Rule #3 is a Must-Do Any loving dog owner can find Rule Number Three challenging! After all, we just really want to give in to what our dogs ask from us. So if following Rule #3 becomes challenging, here are some facts to remember. When Dogs Know You Are the Leader, They Are Calmer Let's bring all the first three rules together and discuss how they play out through the lens of dog psychology. If you control the food, your dog will be able to switch off from being constantly on guard and protecting the family. They can relax, knowing someone else in charge. This is when you start seeing them nap a lot more during the day :) DOG CALMING CODE: THE ONLINE DOG TRAINER PROGRAM THAT MAKES DOGS CALMER AND MORE OBEDIENT If you delay acknowledgment after separation, your dog will see you're still a most capable leader even after being away from them. It shows your dog YOU CAN PROTECT AND PROVIDE. Once you start doing everything on your own terms — from feeding, to training, to leisure, to exercise — your dog will understand they really don't have to make the decisions. There's you! You know what to do! All these rules make a calmer dog! They're protected! No matter what happens, they're in good hands! And a calmer dog performs better in training and in real life! When Dogs See You As a Leader, They Listen and Obey More An endless supply of the best treats in the world means nothing if your dog doesn't see any reason to obey you. Why should they listen to you when they're busy finding food, protecting the property, and staying on the lookout for threats? This is why I don't agree with shock collar training or overusing treat training. They would never work UNLESS you know what pushes dogs to listen and obey. Establishing Your Leadership Helps Improve Dog Behavior Just like in the story of the woman and her German Shepherd, you won't only see a change in dog obedience, but in your dog's overall behavior. Dogs can overcome food aggression because now they know someone else is in charge of food. It's no longer a life-or-death issue for them of protecting the food. Separation anxiety also improves because your dog will no longer see you as a pup they need to protect. You're now the Alpha! Not a pup in danger. Recall training can also come with lesser resistance because you embrace your role of the leader in such a solid way that makes dogs say “Yes, I will listen and obey!” LEARN THE FULL DETAILS OF THE DOG CALMING CODE HERE! Being a Leader in Your Dog's Eyes Builds a Stronger Relationship I always say this: the Doggy Dan Five Golden Rules is a surefire way to making your dog TRUST AND LOVE you. You're showing you are an Alpha — the one that protects and feeds the pack — and the leader of the dog pack that can't be swayed or toppled by brute force. And after you check the boxes off your dog's “Is This Human Still Capable of Taking Care of Me” checklist, their respect for you will grow because you're their lifeline. You control the food. You are the giver of affection. You do everything on your own terms. Your dogs can happily say “Well, someone's here to protect me now. I better chill and listen to their instructions.” It's just so beautiful how dog psychology works! DOG CALMING CODE: IMPROVE DOG OBEDIENCE WITH DOG PSYCHOLOGY Conclusion: Learn How to Improve Dog Obedience + The Powerful Doggy Dan Five Golden Rules with the Dog Calming Code Improving dog obedience — when done right — will not call for force or fear. Once operated within the rules of dog psychology, improving dog obedience will be less harsh but FAR MORE EFFECTIVE. By following Rule #3 (together with Rule #1 and Rule #2) you will find a more effective way that will surely leave a mark on your dogs. Now, if you're new to the concept of the Doggy Dan Five Golden Rules, you might have questions about Rule #3 such as: Is it OK for my dog to sit on the couch with me? What do I do when my dog invades my space? When my dog drops their toy on my feet is this invading my space? If I deny my dog's request for attention, when can I pat my dog? Can I pat my dog when he is sitting by my feet? My dog barks at me if I don't give her attention, what should I do? How long should I wait until I take my dog for a walk? How do I make my dog see me as the leader if I have a very big dog? Can I let my dog on the bed? And if so, when? ...and so much more. My program, the Dog Calming Code talks extensively about Rule Number Three and the Five Golden Rules of Dog Training. If you're a dog owner looking into improving both dog obedience and dog behavior, this is your comprehensive and complete guide. Food training for dogs is Rule #1 of my Doggy Dan Five Golden Rules, because of this simple truth: when dogs have food, they feel like they're the richest animal in the world. It's not their toys, not their new clothes, or their cozy bed that makes them feel great. It's food. For dogs, it's all about the food. In fact it's not just about the food, it's about CONTROLLING the food. Because FOOD is the most important thing for your dog, it is also THE MOST POWERFUL TRAINING TOOL. It's dog psychology 101… Food has a DIRECT INFLUENCE on your dog's behavior and we have to get this bit right before our dogs will start listening and obeying us. As dog owners we may think that as long as we're buying the food and doing all the feeding, and even using treats for positive reinforcement training, then we're all good….we must be the ones in control, right? Wrong. I can virtually guarantee you that right now, your dog thinks THEY control the food in your home… If you are letting your dog eat from the bowl whenever they want, letting them chew on bones whenever they want, and if they eat before you do… then THEY are actually in control. And whoever's in control, is in charge. Which is a bad thing, as I explain below. HOWEVER when done right, food training (or controlling the food) can completely transform your dog and improve their behavior almost overnight. Golden Rule Number One shows you how to convince your dog that YOU CONTROL the food. Key Takeaways: Food has a direct influence on your dog's behavior and we have to get this bit right before our dog's will start listening and obeying us. When you put the Five Golden Rules in place, your dog will start to acknowledge you as the Alpha, and they can start to relax. Dogs collect, hide and bury food to keep their control of the food. If they know where even one bone is hidden, they will still think they have the control. Doggy Dan Five Golden Rules: Rule Number One — Controlling the Food — in a Nutshell Rule Number One Sounds Hard, Doggy Dan! But Does Rule Number One Of The Doggy Dan Five Golden Rules Work? Doggy Dan Five Golden Rules: The Role of Food in Dog Psychology Common Myths About Food in Dog Training How the Dog Calming Code and The Doggy Dan Five Golden Rules Help You Tap Into the Power of Food But First, What Are the Doggy Dan Five Golden Rules? The Doggy Dan Five Golden Rules are the cornerstone of my training approach. They serve as the bedrock for not only controlling dog behavior—but more importantly—building that solid, loving relationship between you and your dog. The Five Golden Rules are the principles behind my most successful training program, the Dog Calming Code™. (Watch the full video below for my introduction to the Doggy Dan Golden Rule #1) What makes this dog training approach so successful is that it's not just based on symptom-solving techniques. Yes, it will solve almost every dog behavioral issue, like excessive barking, aggression, jumping up, running away, pulling on the leash and many more, but the way it works compared to traditional dog training is VERY DIFFERENT… How the Doggy Dan Five Golden Rules Increase Dog Training Success It identifies the root cause of the behavioral problems—instead of just administering bandaid solutions. It taps into your dog's NATURAL INSTINCTS and helps you THINK LIKE A DOG to discover and solve what's really going on. The 5 Golden Rules is a revolutionary way of training dogs that defies the traditional methods so many dog owners have tried and failed with. Because it's based on dog psychology, the method I teach doesn't require constant food-bribery, or learning hundreds of games or tricks. There's also no shouting or smacking, and NO SHOCK COLLARS or other torture devices. And the beauty of it is, it won't take up any more of your time—it just shows you how to do some of things you already do with your dog in a different way, which generates massive results. Yet strangely, it's a method that very few dog trainers even know. With the Doggy Dan Five Golden Rules, YOU WIN YOUR DOG'S MIND FIRST, before any “training”, by establishing the PROPER leadership in your dog's eyes. You see, when a dog can't recognize a leader in their home—through dog psychology (not human psychology)—they're forced to take on that leadership role to ensure their own survival. This is a built-in DNA driven response. The Doggy Dan Five Golden Rules Establishes You As the Leader Now I'm not talking about the kind of leader who buys the food, or whoever can shout the loudest. No, what a dog is seeking are signs that there's an Alpha present. When you put the Five Golden Rules in place, your dog will start to acknowledge you as the Alpha, as their trusted LEADER, and they can start to relax. They'll step down from over-protecting the family and property, and being on guard 24/7. They will start sleeping and chilling more (and irritating you less) because someone else is now making all the decisions. And one of the MOST powerful ways to establish this leadership is by controlling the food. I have proven it through the years, with over 88,000 dogs trained, that unless you control the food and use all Five of my Golden Rules, your dog training will most likely fail. Important note: in the following weeks, I will be talking about the Five Golden Rules one by one and how each rule impacts dog training. So stay tuned for that! DOG CALMING CODE: THE PROGRAM GUIDED BY DOGGY DAN'S FIVE GOLDEN RULES Doggy Dan Five Golden Rules: Rule Number One — Controlling the Food — in a Nutshell Notice that I used “controlling the food” instead of “how to feed your dog.” But what exactly do I mean by “controlling the food?” As I mentioned before, the common perception is that as long as you buy the food and feed your dog, you're already controlling the food. But that's not the case. You see… Even if you're the food provider but the food can easily be accessed by your dog at any time — think bowls of food left on the floor or buried bones and scraps left in corners — YOU'RE NOT in charge. Or even if you're the food source, and you give in to your dog's quips and random requests for food, YOU'RE STILL NOT in charge. Perhaps you're the one serving the meals, but your dog feels they can do whatever they want with the food, you're still not in charge. And especially, if you let your dog eat before you do, then you're DEFINITELY NOT the one in charge. Your dog should understand that you are the only one with ULTIMATE CONTROL over the food. They should know that behavior towards food is NEVER on their terms. Controlling the food is remembering that the way you deliver those two meals a day and all the other food treats, has SIGNIFICANT power to influence your dog. Why? You can teach the most powerful lessons and establish leadership during mealtimes. Dogs WILL LISTEN when food is involved. Not so much during playtime or rest time. It is during meal times when they clearly see who's in charge and who they should listen to. Following Rule Number One is realizing that food is the most influential tool in your dog training arsenal. DOG CALMING CODE: HELPING DOG OWNERS ESTABLISH LEADERSHIP Sounds Interesting…But Does Rule Number One Of The Doggy Dan Five Golden Rules Work? I've told this story before, but I think it's important to re-tell it, as it demonstrates just how powerful Rule Number One is and how it can impact even the toughest dog issues. Kelly, a woman living an hour away, contacted me in distress over her Bichon Frise, Terri. Terri had been suffering from relentless itching, self-chewing, and self-licking for over two years. Despite trying numerous medications, her vet suspected stress as the root cause. The Story of Terri and How Controlling the Food Helped Her Upon arriving at Kelly's home, I found Terri exhibiting anxious behavior, continuously chewing and licking herself, with her legs showing signs of wear from years of this self-destructive behavior. My solution was straightforward yet effective: I addressed the underlying cause by showing Terri that she was not in charge and teaching her to relax instead of stressing and licking incessantly. Understanding that dogs follow a pack mentality, Terri had taken on the role of being the leader of the pack, feeling responsible for her human family and vigilantly guarding the den (the house and property). This responsibility left her wound-up and anxious. GET THE DOG CALMING CODE AND LEARN HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DOGS THE RIGHT WAY To help solve the problem, I introduced the family to the Five Golden Rules of becoming the Pack Leader, which focused on principles of ownership rather than simply commanding Terri not to lick or chew herself. Rule Number One involved implementing a powerful feeding procedure, which totally captured Terri's attention and changed her behavior. After just two weeks of following these rules, Kelly sent me a heartwarming email, reporting that Terri's self-chewing and licking had ceased. While I was pleased to have been of help, I wasn't surprised by the success; these Five Golden Rules have consistently resolved countless issues for many dogs over the years. Doggy Dan Five Golden Rules: The Role of Food in Dog Psychology In the next few weeks, you'll hear me refer to dog psychology more frequently. We need to speak a language that really tells our dogs “Hey, I'm the one in charge here. You should listen to me.” Read on below to learn about the major role that food plays in dog psychology. Role #1: The One Who Controls the Food is The One Who Leads Bigger car, bigger house, new wardrobe — these things don't matter to your dog. Dogs are all about survival, and food is the main thing that keeps them alive. So when you control the food, AND you keep your dog alive, that is a really big deal. When you take control of the food, your dog will start to see they're not the one in charge around the house. The'll settle down and start listening to YOU. LEARN TO USE DOG FOOD FOR THE BETTER WITH THE DOG CALMING CODE Role #2: Food Is The Fastest Way To Establish The Do's and Don'ts In dog psychology, food is ALMIGHTY. It's the great motivator, so dogs understand the concept of Do's and Don'ts better when the trainer uses food. It's called positive reinforcement training where they only get their share of delicious treats when they do good. Using food training for dogs to establish the right and wrongs makes your training so much easier. With Rule Number One you also learn that once you've established the boundaries of what's okay and what's not, the trust you've built by connecting through their psychology allows you to slowly move away from relying on treats. Role #3: Food Resolves The Power Struggle Between You and Your Dog I have heard dog owners say “Well, my dog is absolutely not food motivated.” Believe me, having worked with thousands of dogs, I can say that dogs find motivation in food. Note that I'm not talking about ‘treat training', I'm talking about food in general. HOWEVER, our dogs are smart, and they want to play little mind games with their owners (also: dogs THINK they are in control – so why should they do what you want for a measly scrap of food?). Remember: the devil IS IN THE DETAILS. What seems harmless can really stall your progress. For example, let's say your dog does not eat the food that you serve. What you do next will make or break your training. My recommendation is to take the food away immediately to establish that you're in control. If we leave the food down and wait for them, it turns on the “I'm in charge” button. It shifts control from you to them. And don't worry, they won't starve. But they'll certainly be paying attention the next time you serve their meal! FOOD IS NOT JUST FOOD. LEARN THE RIGHT WAY TO CONTROL THE FOOD WITH THE DOG CALMING CODE. Role #4: Even the Most Harmless Looking Piece of Food Can Influence How Your Dog Sees Control There's no such thing as “Ahh, that's just an old bone!” when it comes to controlling the food. Dogs collect, hide and bury food to keep their control of the food. If they know where even ONE bone is hidden, they will still think they have the control. The same goes for rawhide, chew-sticks, pigs ears, hooves or any other kind of food. To your dog, food is FOOD! Role #5: Dogs Have 99.998% of a Wolf's DNA And for wolves in the wild, food dictates who is in charge. For example, in a wolf pack, the Alpha always eats first. If you follow the rule that your dog can only eat after you, it's powerfully telling your dog “I eat first because I'm the Alpha. I'm the one in charge.” How exactly do you do that? Good question… There's so many nuances to the feeding process that shows you're in charge (which would take too many articles for me to write) so I've recorded them as video lessons in my bestselling course, the Dog Calming Code. It shows how I enter people's homes and teach them Rule #1 and you'll witness the almost instantaneous change in their dog's behavior—just by altering how they feed their dog—going from over-excited and misbehaving to relaxed and watchful. Common Myths About Food in Dog Training Myth #1: Food is Just Food, It Can't Be That Useful Sure, food is important, but it's easy not to think of it as THE most important in a dog's life. Thinking “food is just food” causes dog owners to struggle with controlling negative dog behavior. Food is a life-or-death thing for our dogs. This fact emphasizes how much focus you should put on your dog's food. Myth #2: You Only Need to Give One Food for Everything Some dog owners believe that a single type of food is all a dog needs to keep them highly motivated. In reality, dogs have varying preferences and tastes. While one dog may be highly motivated by a particular treat, another dog may find it uninteresting. It's important to experiment with different types of food, including soft, chewy, crunchy, raw and cooked to determine what resonates best with each individual dog during training. You'll be amazed at how laser-focused your dog can be when you're holding a bag of small pieces of cheese and cooked chicken and bacon! THE DOG CALMING CODE: THE TRAINING PROGRAM THAT USES DOG PSYCHOLOGY Myth #3: Giving Food to Dogs is a Way to Show I Love Them, Therefore, I Should Give Food to Them Anytime They Want The truth is indulging dogs with food whenever or wherever they want can have serious repercussions. Remember that the very core of Rule Number One is to establish who is in charge. If you give in to every request for food, it sends a message to your dog that they're the one calling the shots. Imagine giving in to your child's every single whine for sweets and chocolates, it would be absolute chaos and they would run riot all over you and the household. And that can absolutely hurt training! How the Dog Calming Code and The Doggy Dan Five Golden Rules Help You Tap Into the Power of Food Now you know how CRUCIAL it is to control the food. And I'm sure you want to get this right, but it's also so easy to get it wrong! I encourage you to learn the first rule inside my course, the Dog Calming Code, because it answers questions such as: Is it okay to leave the bowl down if my dog has eaten all the food? My dog walked away and lost all their food…when do they get to try again? How long do we have to do this for? Does everyone in the house have to eat first? I have more than one dog, is it still the same process? My dog eats all his food when I put the bowl down…does this mean it hasn't worked? My dog takes the biscuits one at a time outside to eat them, what should I do? Is it okay to feed the dog at the table? Do we leave water down? (Yes – always leave clean fresh water down for your dogs. Dogs can die within 24 hours in extreme conditions without water.) I'll repeat this: the devil is in the details, and one seemingly harmless choice can actually stall or even reverse your training. It's crucial that you use the Dog Calming Code as your guide to making the right decisions around controlling the food. LEARN MORE ABOUT THE DOG CALMING CODE AND DOGGY DAN'S FIVE GOLDEN RULES HERE. And I know following Golden Rule Number One CAN FEEL like more work! But it actually isn't – you just do the same things slightly differently… and listen: after working with more than 88,000 dogs, I know that Rule #1 of Doggy Dan's Five Golden Rules works. YOU. HAVE. TO. CONTROL. THE. FOOD. We must allow our overly-stressed dogs to relax. I've seen the Golden Rules transform so many ruckus dogs into calm, well-behaved ones. Yes! Coagusense developed the first point-of-care prothrombin time/Internationalized Normalized Ratio (PT/INR) monitoring system for cardiac patients to help them maintain warfarin dosage within a therapeutic range. In the latest version of their device, they actually removed connectivity features to accommodate the needs of their older, less-tech-savvy self-testers. Therefore, they had to go back to the FDA with more bench data for re-approval. Andy Rogers talked with Mike Acosta, EVP/Head of Compliance at Coagusense, and later recapped some of the lessons learned with Senior Electrical Engineer Jake Cowperthwaite. Andy and Jake have an informative discussion about how to define performance requirements when you're aiming for FDA approval.Need to know:Make sure the performance requirement is objectively verifiable by a measurable test result, functional demonstration of performance, simulation analysis, and/or visual inspection.Plan for the number of prototypes you'll need to create confidence in your statistics. Large companies may have their own internal mechanism to create a plan. Startups can consult with the FDA. Understand the regulatory considerations for seamless FDA approval. It's a good idea to meet with the FDA prior to submission to outline your requirements. The earlier you have regulatory buy-in, the better. The nitty gritty:Rule Number One is to make sure that the performance of the device is objectively verifiable. For example, simply stating “the device shall be easy to use” is vague and subjective and won't cut it with the FDA. Write your requirement in a way that can be verified through: testing and measuring results, a functional demonstration of performance, analysis via calculations or simulations, or visual inspection. A well-written requirement is specific with clear criteria, for example if your product was a pump, a performance requirement could be: “the aspiration pump shall have X flow rate within Y bounds”. If it meets that requirement, you're ready to move on. Don't over-spec.Three things the FDA is looking for: Above all, efficacy and safety Accuracy Is your device novel technology or based on a predicate device? At the test bench, start with a good understanding of how many prototypes you'll need to have statistical confidence in your results. Sample size will depend on the data needed; an on/off switch won't require a large sample size, but testing with different operators – as with in-home devices – will need a substantial data set.In some cases, it's possible to short-cut the process early in development by testing multiple variables at once. This will yield a lot of data, which can then be analyzed. You'll find some variables meaningful and others not, but understanding these variables and their sensitivity early in product development has great value and can save money in producing fewer prototypes.USEFUL LINKShttps://coag-sense.com/about-us/https://www.greenlight.guru/
When we find ourselves between a rock and a hard place, the bear and the cliff, or the Pharoah's army and the Red Sea, it's easy to forget we're there for a purpose. Whether allowed to get there by God or lead there outright, we are living out God's appointment. Rule Number One in our new series helps remind us of a fundamental understanding of our circumstances in life, either perilous or comfortable.

Being too clever by half is never a good idea for a presenter. We are here to make our points crystal clear to our audience, not to impress them with our own brilliance. Personal and professional brands get torn asunder when we get this wrong. Find out how to avoid that fate in today's show. We are all assembled in a luxury hotel's gorgeous function room. The big brand name, the resplendent silver mane, the speaker's resume and abundant confidence all speak to a brilliant talk coming up. The keynote starts well but gradually we start to lose connection with the speaker's message. The talk is full of supple subtleties. The main point becomes fuzzy, distant, unapproachable and impenetrable. We sit there wondering are we all stupid, because we can't grasp the speaker's nuanced argument or is the speaker simply rambling and incoherent? Actually, it doesn't matter which of us is stupid, because the talk has failed. The speaker has not been able to get the message across in a way that resounds with the audience. We have to know who is in our audience, their level of understanding of the subject and their capacity to be challenged. We need to be able to communicate, which means the listeners can understand and follow what we are saying, rather than trying to impress with our own brilliance. Structure helps to guide the audience through the proceedings. This speech, if it had a structure, it was obscure, vague and puzzling. A heavy mist rolled in on this speech after about the first ten minutes and engulfed us all in such a way, that we struggled to follow where this meandering was going. What was the point being made here? Where are we going with these stories? What is the key argument being made? The use of slides on this occasion was minimal. In many cases this is a blessing, but not this one. We needed some more form to follow the speaker's points. We were lost. We could have found a path, if there had been some visual guideposts for us. Maybe a fellow genius, if indeed our speaker was a genius, may have been simpatico with our speaker's intent and understood the thesis. Alas we were just ordinary punters, turned out in the hope of a nice lunch and some enlightenment from this font of knowledge. As speakers we have to make it easy for our audience to understand us. If we are going to be clever and tangential, we run the risk of losing people. If we are fixated on subtlety, we can be too opaque for the troops and they just get lost. We were all crime scene witnesses to the merciless murder of a major brand that day. When the big cheese fails like that, we doubt the whole organisation. Our faith in the firm has completely subsided. Apart from the damage to the company, the individual's personal brand is shredded, torn and tattered. The stakes are high when you are a presenter, so mastering the ability to connect with your audience is critical. Don't over complicate the exercise. Have a clear structure, be easy to follow as you navigate your way around your talk and pitch it at the right level for your audience. Do that and your personal and professional brands will be enhanced, appreciated and working for you, not against you.

THE Sales Japan Series by Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan
Presenting Your Sales Materials Remotely Sitting in that tight, too cosy meeting room, opposite a throng of buyers, is now a figment of our fevered salespeople's imaginations. We were able to whip out our brochures, flyers, catalogues, corporate propaganda with frivolous abandon. Today we are sitting at home or the client is sitting at home and now this is a one to one conversation. We have been geared up for in person client meetings, where our physical marketing assets were chosen for their maximum impact. Beautiful four colour pages, sharp photographs, compelling diagrams and graphs, carefully manicured text. I know it is hilarious, but I am sure you have seen webinars, where some rather ambitious person is holding up their paper document in their hand in front of the camera, to make their point. Remarkable stuff really, although pretty delusional at the same time. There is no certainty that we will still be able to just flourish our flyers in the buyer's face and get the deal done. We may find that time spent with buyers remains an online experience, as companies ban outsider visits or individuals stay closeted at home from fear of contagion. Even if we do get to meet them, the time allotted may be curtailed to a stringent fifteen minutes. In this case, all the propaganda has either been delivered across to the buyer, or we are required to send the soft copies well in advance of the meeting, for the buyer to be able to survey our goods. Remember our Rule Number One is never give the buyer your flyer, catalogue, brochure or whatever. You hold that baby firm, arranged upside down to you, so that the buyer can easily read it. Using your expensive pen as a pointer, you scrupulously guide them to where you want them to look. All of this is now out the window, many of the rules of sales have been trashed and the buyer is looking all over the place and at no place in particular, because it is all gobbledegook to them. In the online situation, we need to be guiding them to the page and the section where we want them to look. That may mean loading up everything that might possibly be needed before the meeting, on to the platform we will be employing. We should then open the soft copy of the relevant document, and we should be controlling the page advancement and the document selection. Once we get to the place on the page we want to highlight, we should be placing our pointer, circling, drawing or underlining where we want them to note. With the technology available today this is easy. Two popular platforms - WebEx and Zoom - both allow the uploading of documents and we can transform any on-screen document into a virtual whiteboard, allowing us to scribble all over it. This requires you master the medium and be competent to wield the on-line tools with flair and confidence. If we make the most of the tech and we draw some procurement interest, the buyer may ask us for a proposal. Remember Rule Number Two. Never send the proposal in advance. This advance document reconnoitre by the buyer usually leads to no sales taking place, as they are zeroing in on the money and remain contemptuous of the value. Typically, the buyer will go straight to the last page, chasing the cash flow killer imposts. They simply ignore the carefully crafted value statements spilling over the edges, inside the rest of the proposal. That sale's rule is out the window too. Today, we have no choice, we have to show them the document, but please take careful note - we don't have to send it in advance. We should arrange the online meeting, and reveal the document page by page, as we walk them through it. We can send the whole thing over later as an email attachment, but critically we must control the explanation of what the proposal says. We write the proposal with complete knowledge of what we are saying. Often, however, the reader cannot grasp the meaning as we intended it. That is why we need to be there, supervising their understanding. Normally we would do that face to face in the meeting room. We still need to do it, if we want a sale and now we just move across to the virtual room. By walking them through the document, we can highlight the key points. They can read the screen for themselves, but our job is to highlight key attributes, justifying the price tag at the end. The value is poured on first and then like a wizard, we enfold the pricing in the context of our explanation. A piece de resistance of copy writing, logic, emotion and logistics. In the vaccine deprived world of Covid-19, actually being in the same room as the buyer may not be a possibility anymore, so we must adjust. Darwin didn't talk about the survival of the strongest. He talked about the triumph of those species which can best adapt to survive. The salesperson species must adapt or many of us won't survive.
Don't split the party.
Please take our very short survey! http://survey.libsyn.com/debtproofliving This episode was recorded in February 2020 prior to the widespread economic effects resulting from COVID-19 stay-at-home regulations. 0:01 It’s the same thing with money... I'm promising you. Welcome to Debt-Proof Living with Mary Hunt it's all about life money and how to live well and thrive below your means. Today on Debt- Proof Living with Mary Hunt, we continue along our journey based on one of Mary's best selling books 7 Money Rules for Life, How to Take Control of Your Financial Future. That book is available online or wherever fine books are sold. This episode is part two of our series, How to Take Control of Your Money. 0:38 Mary: Hi everyone! This is Mary Hunt. I'm so happy you're with me today for this episode. We are putting together the series basically for how financial intelligence is going to improve your life. I know that sounds so academic, doesn’t it? This is just basic basic rules for life having to do with your money. Think about this. If you have children or wherever a child yourself which I guess includes every single person you know. We grew up with rules. Probably the first one I ever remembered 0:56 having to do with your money think about this if you have children or wherever a child yourself which I guess includes every single person you know we grew up with rules and probably the first one I ever remembered learning was crossing the street. 1:10 There's a rule - you just don't run out, you stand there. Are you with me? You look left. You look right. You see if a car is coming and then you can proceed cautiously. We all know that. We don't have to relearn that every day of our lives. We just know it. It becomes instinctual. How about -oh, I don’t know- touching a hot stove? You'll do it once, maybe, but that'll be all. Managing money is, it is very similar to that. There are underlying rules that, if broken, if not paid attention to, can really really mess up our lives and if you haven’t listened to part 1 in this series 1:50 you might want to do that because how do I reveal just exactly how not following rules or in my case not knowing the rules— I didn't realize that there was a fine art to managing money that we all need to know about. So make sure you either go back and listen to that or a read about it. Whatever. But we're going to pick up today and I want to talk a little bit more about how to look at this. As we proceed and I only know this about you because I know myself. It's going to be easy to see everything I talk about and we discuss here through the lens of your current financial situation. 2:32 I don't know what that is but mine is much, much different than yours. It's very unique. You might have some student loans. You might have a couple of past due bills right now. Perhaps you're out of a job. Your situation is huge and it's easy to say there's just nothing that'll fix it now. It's too late. It's not too late. It’s not. Believe me. So what I want you to do. I want us all to mentally do this. I call it clean sweep and I only take that because that was the name of a television show on cable years ago. (I loved it.) 3:13 The premise was that the show would go into the home of someone who is having trouble with the organization, had a big mess, maybe even on the brink of being a hoarder. It was called clean sweep and they would come in and the show would do a clean sweep. Re-organize. At the end of the show everything's perfect. You know they walk in and their new home… oh it was fabulous and I loved the show. But the premise was this. They never attempted to organize clutter. It's impossible. So taking that principle here to our series here on how to manage and take care of money. 3:52 In your mind I want you to just do a clean sweep. Just push everything out of the way. All the debts. Are the challenges. Whatever your situation might be. Even if it's fantastic. If you've got so much money in your savings account you don't think you'll ever ever ever have to worry or learn how to manage money. Get rid of that part too. Let's get just a nice clean canvas as we proceed. OK, ready? Here we go. 4:20 Rule Number One. It's not difficult. Here it is. Spend less than you earn. Five little words. They become so, so unthinkable in our society and where we are in the world today. Do you know credit has become such a huge part of our lives? I shared with you in part one just how it affected my life. This first rule is so simple. I hope it doesn't prompt you to just blurt out- oh come on Mary everyone knows that. 4:51 Well, I promise you not everybody knows it or at least lives according to that. So the first money rule for life is so logical but so misunderstood that so many people miss it. There's a lot of competition for your mind and your wallet these days and there's a big world out there that would rather you not pay too much attention to this first rule. Spend less than you earn. Let’s talk about that. 5:30 There's many ways that people might refer to this. One of them is live within your means. If you live within your means, what that indicates is that you don't spend more than you earned. So let’s say you earned $1000. If you live within your means, you spend $1000. Ok? Of course you could spend less, but that's your max. You can spend as much as you have. If you spend less than you earn which is our rule. Spend less than you earn. 6:09 It means that you spend LESS than $1000. Now am I splitting hairs? NO. I'm talking about a principal. The difference between what you spend and what you earn is a gap. OK, is it $1? Maybe it's $100. Maybe it's $500. I don't know, but there's a there's a gap there. Here's the principle. It’s in that gap that you are going to find financial freedom. It’s the money you don't spend that is going to allow you to live the life you love. That's the principle of rule number one. 6:50 So live below your means— is correct. Spend less than you earn. Live within your means means that you can spend it all. All right! The principle is we were looking at that gap. That part that you are not spending. Because… if you're following along in the book you're going to see some simple charts there that I hope will be very revealing. It’s in the a gap that you're going to be able to build an emergency fund. It's in the gap that you're going to learn how to start investing. It is in that gap that you are going to back away from debt. You're going to be able to pay off your debt. You’re going to be able to go forward to live debt free. 7:30 You're going to eventually be able to live in a mortgage free home. See all those things are available if you stop spending all that you have or even worse— spending more than you have by going into debt. All right. So that is rule number one. Let’s talk about how we do this. Oh my goodness. First thing we have to deal with is: what's the difference between needs and wants? That has become so blurred in our world during the last— oh I’d say— couple of decades. 8:03 but even more so in the last year or so because we're living in an amazing economy in the US. I don't know how long this is going to last, but people are working. Unemployment is almost unheard of thing. People are getting raises. The wages are going up because of supply and demand. When there are fewer people to work employers must pay more to get good employees. So it is just part of life. So, it's easy to think: Oh you know what? Let's move into a bigger home. Let's let's get some new furniture. Things are going so great. We’ll be able to pay it off in a short period of time. 8:42 A great economy doesn’t necessarily mean that we're going to stop spending more than we have. In fact, just the opposite is more likely. So we need to get rid of our ugly attitudes of entitlement. You know, I deal with that a lot when I when I wrote about my book for children: How to Raise Financially Confident Kids. We need kids to get rid of those attitudes of entitlement, but you know what? Adults have them too! Do you know— oh me, I just got an awful old iPhone 8 I need the… What what's the latest one, Julie? 11? 12? 14? 98? Julie: I don't even know cause I have a 6 Mary: Oh dear, I don’t… you know….they do become part of our lives. That’s a subject for another time. 9:26 but…just think of all the things that our lives absolutely do not depend on, that we find the absolute needs not wants. Dealing with needs and wants is not easy. I got to tell you what I did when I was in my really rough time when I was making this journey myself. I want to tell you about a quick little flow chart that I created years and years and years ago when I was in, that you know, dealing with this whole issue of coming out of that dark night of financial distress. There is a copy of it on page 57 of the book if you’re interested. 10:04 You could photocopy it. Write it up yourself. It's just a flow chart. It starts out, do I need it? If I say yes, then I go on to can I afford it? But if I say do I need it, and the answer's “Well, no, not really.” Then it is the end. I just saved myself from making a foolish purchase. These little tricks really, really help you do to do that. I also want to talk about widening the gap. At first, there's many of us who are making tremendous progress if we can end up on the next payday having not spent one dollar, a single dollar, from the previous paycheck. 10:43 That’s a start. That's a tiny, tiny gap. There are so many ways to widen that gap. So I just want to go over a few of them and these are from my history folks. These are the things that really, really spoke to me. Helped me. I wrote them all down. The first one is borrow and share. Rather than feeling like I had to buy something new. Always have to own that movie. It’s a change of mind for me and I have to tell you that, yes, my watch word was Blockbuster and I know probably don't remember that, but do you know there was a time…? Julie, she shaking her head. Do you remember Blockbuster? We would actually walking to the store look at all the movies. 11:22 Julie: I do remember it and actually that was… my husband was working there when I first met him. Mary: Really? Julie: Blockbuster is close to my heart. Mary: Yes, yes. For me, that started mind a mind-altering kind of thing because I realized I didn't have to own things in order to enjoy them. Something else, this is easy now because a lot of people don't like to go to the mall. But years ago when I was going through this the mall was my place that was my antidepressant. That was my happy place. That was where I could get away and take my kids. I’m sorry. I’m sorry boys. I took you to the mall way too often. 12:04 I had to stop that. I had to see that, that was like a slippery place for an alcoholic. It was, it was my bar! Gosh, that's so hard to say. But it was the absolute truth. Something else that I did was to limit my exposure to advertisements. I had to stop looking at women's magazines. Now, this was a time, yeah, Internet wasn't that big of a deal. But I could go through a woman's magazine… in a fact, there’s something you maybe not know, Julie. Do you know that I was a contributing editor for Woman’s Day magazine for 10 years? 10 years! (Julie: Wow) 10 years I wrote for them. 12:40 So I kind of know I would see all that. I would have to stop reading magazines. I couldn't trust myself. It was like I was a spoiled brat. Something else, and this is still true today, much harder than it used to be, I lived with cash. I'm talking about your day-to-day walking around money. What you have in your purse. I had to learn, I could not carry plastic with me. I could not. My drivers license I considered paper, but no, I'm talking about debit, credit, gift cards, all of that. I had to put them away because if I had them too handy, I was mindless with them. 13:19 In future episodes we're gonna talk about living with cash. There’s some great great tips and tricks. I'm gonna teach you. But back to our list here. Spend free days. Oh my goodness! Do you want a wake up call? Do you wanna see into yourself? Do you want to clear your vision? Come out of the fog? Determine, and this is gonna be hard. I know you can do it! We can do it together. Let's all do it. OK. Commitment. All right. We are going to start by naming a get a spend free day. I don't I will let you know, but we’ll think about it and let you know. Julie and I will try this out. 13:56 Here's how it works. You can plan ahead. That's fine. For one- 24 hour period you are not allowed to spend. And that's in any way! You can't pay the mortgage. You cannot pick up milk on the way home from work. Whatever. Can't go online. Can't go to Amazon. Spend-free day. (Julie: Nothing.) Nothing! Can't eat out. Nothing. You can't believe what’ll happen. Another way to do this is to save the difference. This just goes in a lot of different ways. What I'm talking about is if, let’s talk about the grocery store. You're shopping. It's not your spent free day. You have some coupons and you’ve got on that’s for $1. $1 coupon! I love it when there are 3 digits in a coupon. 14:40 So you pick up whatever that item is. You take it to the check out. You get your dollar off. You save the difference. You get it. You just don't let that dollar you saved melt into the atmosphere. Just take it put that one dollar into a secret savings place. It's great great principle. 15:02 Here’s something. Stay healthy. There’s nothing like medical bills to obliterate any gap you might have in your life. How about this one? Cook in. Stop eating out so much. Julie, have you been to McDonald's lately? I went there recently. Julie: it's expensive for a family, for a person. Mary: I almost had a heart attack. I took my two grandsons. The three of us went for lunch. Two little boys, well sort of, and me. It was, it was like almost $30. I can't believe it. What? Of course, I let my kids pick what they like. I'm telling you I am about… I about… I couldn’t even finish a sentence just like right now… so expensive. Cook in. Oh my goodness. You can't believe the money you'll save. 15:50 Pare down. You know we're overrun with stuff. Just get rid of stuff. Pare down. Number 10. We’re getting to 12 here, so we’re almost there. Don't pay retail. Oh I love that! That’s my watch word when I go grocery shopping and I plan my meals and so on. If it's on sale, yes. It's not on sale, no. We’ll wait till later. We’ll wait until it does go on sale and then we’ll get two to last till next time. Number 11—unfriend the Joneses. Does this happen to you? You’re having a wonderful day. You drive home and see your neighbors just drove up and parked a brand new SUV. There your car is and it’s a little scratched. Kind of old. Needs new tires. 16:35 That’s just an awful feeling. I hate that. That wanting to let my neighbors, allowing my neighbors to determine my decisions and so on. Just unfriend them. Not really. Not in true life. Don’t tell them! Just stop trying to keep up with them. And number 12— increase your income. Yeah, that'll help with that gap and less you keep spending up to the limit there. Finding new ways. Get a side hustle. Do something. So many things and by the way if you're not getting my blog post every single day (www.everydaycheapskate.com) You are missing out on so much. We talk about this a lot. 17:16 OK so that's rule number one spend less than you earn. OK Julie, did I stir up any questions? Julie: I do have a couple questions for you because I love how you were talking about the gap. In the gap is where you find the financial freedom. A lot of people think I find the financial freedom when I can spend whatever I want anytime I want. But the gap is that place and so I was thinking of that. I was thinking about needs versus wants. What could I be content with? Actually when you asked me what version of the phone iPhone I have. A 6 sounds so old, but it works fine. Mary: You're talking about the phone. Julie: I'm talking so but I'm talking about is… I guess I wondered if you could speak to, a little bit about being content with what you have. Or a time that you, maybe a time from your own story where if you have a specific place and in your mind where you thought, “You know what? I can just go with what I've got.” Mary: OK let's go back to your first one. Let's talk about financial freedom. What is financial freedom? What is that thing that we find in that beautiful place in life where we are spending less than we earn? I think it has…let's take away from money for a moment. 18:36 Let's talk about kids, raising children. As they become teenagers, they get more and more freedoms, right? But as you give your children freedoms, and they earn freedoms because they show a maturity and a discipline that they're able to handle that. Let’s say that it has to do with them being able to stay out later at night with your friends. Which I know is a big deal. (Julie: Right) You would, you would not in 1 million years expect that your child will take that to mean, “Oh good, for two hours of my life I can do anything I want. I can rob banks. I can I can egg cars. I can be a vandal. I can do anything I want because I have freedom to do anything I want. 19:15 It all comes in that want. (Julie: yes) Because if they have been raised properly. If you have instilled in them the values, beliefs. You expose them to God's Word. And they have embraced those, those things in their lives that you've taught them. Their wants are going to change. They’re not going to want to do that, because all of a sudden freedom now gives them not no boundaries, but allows them to live out the boundaries and rules and the values that they have learned. 19:53 It’s the same thing with money. I'm promising you that when you have that gap. When you have, let's say $10,000 cash in the bank in your emergency fund, that doesn't mean that you live like an idiot. No! You drive more carefully. I promise you you will. (Julie: Right) because you don't want to have to take any of that $10,000 to pay for a deductible on a car wreck that was your fault. 20:18 You are not going to let the paint job on your house get to the point where it's gonna cost you twice as much because it has deteriorated. You'll become so much better at maintenance. You will become so much more frugal when it comes to replacing things. Say you need a new sofa. You've got a nice gap. You have no debt. The last thing in the world is that you want to go into debt and so you see things through new eyes. You see things through eyes of financial freedom that you have. You have the freedom and I'll tell you there is bondage to be in debt. 20:56 because when you need that new sofa and your only choice is to use the available credit on one credit card and you've only got $600. Well, yeah, you shop well. But not for the reason we would've thought. So financial freedom doesn’t mean I have so much money I can have everything in the whole world. It's I have enough money to have those things that I need and some things that I want and you wants change. To me that is contentment. It’s knowing that I have options. I have choices. Does that help? Julie: That does help, and then I wondered also if you could speak to the fact that maybe listeners are thinking: You know what? This is all great, but in this day and age I do have three kids. They all need a phone. They all do this. They all are in sports, are all eating, and there is just- the family budget is just has so many more expenses than my parents day. It seems like there's no way that I could possibly spend less than I earn, because of all the pressure on a family budget now that wasn't on a family budget 30 years ago. I don't know if that's really true but I've heard my friends say that exact thing. 22:12 Mary: Well, I understand that. I also have to say that we need to rethink. We need to rethink. I have worked with families who have been in such dire situations that they didn't have the options that you speak of. Now, it might sound like a phone for everybody in the whole house is absolutely mandatory. I promise you that it's not. It's not. It might seem wise and for some people, they might choose to make it mandatory. But it's not. One family I'm thinking of right now with three teenagers. They had one phone between the three of them. 22:51 And the parents would decide on a certain day who needed it the most. Then they taught and what do you do if you don't have a phone. Julie, there was a time none of us had phones. Julie: We had a dime or quarter. Mary: Children are fine. You grew up fine. OK. Yes, there were phone booths, but I think that friends have taken the place of phone booths. If you’re in a dire situation, you can always find someone who can make that call for you or allow you to use their phone to make it. That’s another subject for another day. What I’m saying is that we have to really rethink what is absolutely necessary. I know some families who think their kids having a meal card at elementary school is actually mandatory. No, it is not. Children can still take lunch to school. Really, that’s what Everyday Cheapskate, my blog, my daily email is all about. Helping people to find all these ways to be able to reduce the expenses in order to widen the gap. I even wrote a post on how to widen the gap: bake bread. Yes, little things like that. 24:00 So I would say to your question that, yes, we have many expenses perhaps. Every teenager in the home doesn’t have to have their own car and we need to rethink a lot of things. Especially during the period of time are you getting out of debt, because I'm telling your credit card debt that interest-rate is chewing up peoples gap like you can't believe it. Getting rid of that it's going to really, really help. Julie: Thanks Mary, I appreciate that. Mary: Thank you for joining me on today's episode and I hope that you'll join me for the next one. CFOTL: Help us to understand what sets Sage and its offerings apart? Iguchi: In eight years we’ve developed a company that’s at about nine and a half billion dollars in market cap. We are really well positioned from a cash perspective, and we’ve grown to over 650 people strong. Let me tell you a little bit about the history here. We are focused on developing innovative medicines for brain disorders. When we started the company eight years ago, there was a total innovation void. Companies had had many, many failures, and they were shedding their CNS pipelines. Everyone was saying that brain disorders were too tough to tackle, and we said that they were way too important not to. So we were going to take some risks, and we knew that we were going to have to shift the paradigm. That was what we focused on. How do we learn from those mistakes? From the science side, I think that a couple of things that we did really differently was that we always followed the science. We didn’t go after an indication because it looked good or it felt good or it was a big market. We followed what the science and the molecules told us. That was one key feature. I think that the second key feature was that as we moved into development, we used a differentiated approach, a development strategy where we started with what I would call “methodology studies.” These were smaller studies that had very quick end points, and they were very clear, very unambiguous. What was great about this was that it not only gave us a look at activity very quickly so that we could determine whether to move forward but also enabled us to design the next trial. We could do that more efficiently, right? We know something from that earlier, smaller trial, so now let’s make whatever changes we need to design the next trial. So, we have used this approach over and over again at Sage, and I think that this has really been a core component of why we have such a vast pipeline. I think that the key here is that what Sage is all about is seeing the brain differently so that we can make all the difference. I think that’s been the core of how we’ve been able to set ourselves up as leaders and differentiated in the field.

What is the one thing entrepreneurs should do to achieve long term success and happiness? Rule number one, if you're married, put your marriage first. There's so much pressure and noise that builds up when you don't communicate what's going on for you with your partner. If you aren't honest with your spouse, it's really hard for them to gain perspective and relate to you and support you. You cannot compartmentalize your success and your marriage. In a lot of ways, your spouse is your superpower. They can see and understand things in you that you may not be able to see yourself. The sooner you're willing to admit and appreciate the power your marriage has, the faster you'll start achieving at the level you want. We are going to be releasing the Relationship Cadence very soon. If you want a preview of what it's going to be like you can check out the Communication Cadence in Momentum Masterclass. www.momentummasterclass.com

Rule Number One of podcasting is plug in the microphone. Pete, with 488 days of sobriety shares his story. SHOW NOTES [2:19] Paul Introduces Pete. I am 38 years old, and golfing is my favorite leisure activity. I have an 8-year-old daughter and a 2-year-old son. I am in construction sales, mostly traveling around Ohio and surrounding states. [6:07] Paul- When did you realize you had a problem with alcohol Pete? Pete- I’ve always known, or at least had the fear of having a problem. I could drink a case of beer by myself in High school. [12:23] Paul- Was this a bottom you experienced, or where you done? Pete- I hit a spiritual bottom. Things that were important, no longer seemed important. My wife, great job, and truck were all things that weren’t making me happy. I realized that doing these things that I was taught would make me happy weren’t. I was bankrupt spiritually and emotionally. My wife opened the work bench, and the drawer was full of empty and full booze bottles. They were devastated. I realized that suicide wasn’t’ an option. That was the moment that made me change everything. [17:25] Paul- What was the outpatient therapy like? Walk us through that. Pete- I went to a state certified program. I attended with several other professionals who learned a great deal about addiction and recovery. [24:44] Paul- What have you learned most about yourself these past 488 days? Pete- I have learned that I like peace, calm, and serenity. I accepted chaos because that is what I knew. My life is really good, but I made it really bad by a lot of choices that I made. [28:18] Paul- Have you had cravings, and how do you overcome cravings them? Pete- My cravings as of today are more “I would like a drink” but more thoughts than cravings. In the beginning I had physical cravings. I don’t have the impulse to drink now. Alcohol was the medicine that fixed everything for me. [30:25] Rapid Fire Round What was your worst memory from drinking? The experience with my wife and daughter not being able to ride bikes because of my booze hidden in the drawer. Did you ever have an “oh-shit” moment? For me it was when my mother in law died from alcoholism, in the nursing home my biggest thought was how do I get out of here and have a drink without anyone noticing. What’s your plan moving forward? Continue to present in the moment, and doing, not thinking about things I don’t do, and then regretting them. I just need to do the best I can. What’s your favorite resource in recovery? Meditation and Prayer. I’ve used the Headspace app, there is a meditation guru that lives in our village. What’s the best advice you’ve ever received (on sobriety)? Follow direction. Putting faith in a blind process. What parting piece of guidance can you give listeners who are in recovery or thinking about quitting drinking? You are feeling the way you are supposed to be feeling at that time. Talk to other people. My feelings are normal; it’s okay to relearn. You might be an alcoholic if when you walk out of your recovery center, and you see one of your friends that you’ve been partying with forever and he says “Hey Pete, I was surprised to see you here.” Then I thought about it, and It’s really not much of a surprise to see you here. Rule #1 What do a parking ticket and a cashier’s cheque have to do with business? This week, Eliot and Jodi talk about the importance of not making things complicated for your customers, and the difference between process and outcome. Why is that important for business? The confused mind says no. Having a catalog of options is great, but it still needs to be easy for your customers to choose. Sometimes, in an effort to make it so each individual in your marketplace finds that custom fit, you make every individual in your marketplace paralyzed with indecision. There is a certain complexity that comes with being out of touch with what the end user is going to need and want; that complexity is often the result of being too close to your offering. Great ideas tend not to survive their first encounter with the market because of this. And sometimes, the problem comes with creating global rules to one instance of a challenge; strapping a solution on a problem without thinking about the unintended consequences. Think: is this a situation that needs a policy versus something that just needs a conversation? Share your story So we told you our story – now it’s time to tell us yours! Don R. Crawley, CSP, DTM. Customer Care Training Rule Number One: First, Do No Harm You may have heard the Latin phrase, Primum non nocere, which means "first, do no harm." Although it's often associated with the physician's Hippocratic Oath, the original oath does not include the precise phrase. It is, however, taught in medical schools as part of medical ethics classes and it has an important connotation for those of us who serve end-users and other customers.
