KISS. - Aerosmith debuterer, de transvestit klædte The New York Dolls lancerer deres præ-punk/glam og Iggy & The Stooges udviser frenetisk rå kraft.

Without a doubt, he's one of the most fascinating artists on the rock timeline. In fact, Alice Cooper has done such an incredible job of making sure that rock has an enduring spectacle element to it, of being kind of the embodiment of the freaky side of rock, that it's hard to imagine that there wasn't ever an Alice Cooper on stage somewhere, snakes, guillotines, electric chairs and all. But of course there was, and it took a while for Alice Cooper's brand of entertainment to catch hold. When the Billion Dollar Babies album was released in 1973, Alice Cooper topped the charts, the world finally catching up with the idea that glam rock could be the vehicle for a brutal caricature, a theatrical madman, an entertainer who has also come to be known as one of the nicest guys in rock. So it's funny that one of the hits on that album is about not playing nice anymore in favor of letting one's freak flag fly. This sequel to the Tom Morello MC5 episode goes deep on an exploration of the just-released Heavy Lifting LP, along with its producer, the great Bob Ezrin, producer of such classics as Pink Floyd's The Wall, Kiss's Destroyer, and Alice Cooper's Billion Dollar Babies. Here's just some of the many things Bob and I touch on in this podcast: Bob's work as the king of the rock opera, specifically on Lou Reed's Berlin, about which I was able to ask him a question I've been literally waiting to ask since I was 14 years old (this section is only available in The Director's Cut of this episode); The fascinating story of how this record started off as a Wayne Kramer film project and wound up transforming into an MC5 LP; Plus, a deep-dive discussion about the brand-new, yet final MC5 record, Heavy Lifting! This week we offer up the 12th installment of our series called, “Degrees Of Separation…” where we discuss side projects and solo releases from artists we love. We are celebrating the adjacencies to a true rock n' roll icon: ALICE COOPER. Not much to say about the man, the myth, the legend. Capn'n Content suggested that we focus our listening to the gunslinger guitarists that have supported the Coop throughout his long career. So, that's what we are doing! Enjoy.New to InObscuria? It's all about digging up obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal from one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. While we may be talking about an artist that many of you know in this episode, perhaps you are not aware of the depth of the side projects that the guitarists who've supported him over his 50+ years have. Our hope is that we turn you on to something new!Songs this week include:Hollywood Vampires - “The Boogieman Surprise” from Rise (2019)Billion Dollar Babies - “Too Young” from Battle Axe (1977)Electric Angels - “Dangerous Drug” from Electric Angels (1990)Lou Reed - “Vicious” from Lou Reed Live (1975)Kane Roberts - “Rock Doll” from Kane Robers (1987)Tokyo Police Club - “Little Sister (feat. Cabbage Patch Kids were the must-have toy for many kids in the 1980s, with parents brawling in stores when there weren't enough dolls to go around. Dan Goodman, executive producer of new documentary Billion Dollar Babies, says the frenzy around the toys reached “next-level insanity,” in a shopping craze that changed consumer culture.

In 1983 America was overwhelmed by a disaster, the likes of which it had never seen before. Hysteria led to riots; mayhem became the norm. And the reason? Chubby, potato faced toys: the Cabbage Patch Kids. In this episode of Factual America, Matthew Sherwood meets Dan Goodman, co-executive producer of Billion Dollar Babies, a documentary about the rise and rise of the awkward looking but homely and utterly desirable Cabbage Patch Kids. They discuss the origin of the Cabbage Patch Kids' success, which can be traced back to the Post-Depression era but also owes a great deal to the improving economy of the early ‘80s and the increasing availability of credit. But none of that would have mattered had the Cabbage Patch Kids not had that certain something that made them so special. Despite being mass produced, improved manufacturing techniques gave each doll a seemingly unique appearance. Each one could be ‘adopted'. And, most simply, they looked cute: cute enough to go through hell and high water at the local shopping mall for. Dan shares how he managed to get the man behind the dolls' success, Xavier Roberts, onto the doc, while he and Matthew also discuss the roles played in the film by legendary news anchor Connie Chung, and actor Neil Patrick Harris. The Cabbage Patch Kids represent 80s excess at its best or worst, depending on your point-of-view. Step back in time to enjoy the good, the bad, and the immensely cute of it all with Matthew and Dan! Watch the episode at https://factualamerica.com “You think about these Cabbage Patch Kid riots... and it's not like we looked at that and thought, ‘Boy, that was a terrible idea!'... Instead, we go the opposite direction... and that's where we got to this Black Friday mentality.” – Dan Goodman

Doll hospitals, cabbage "births," a four-year legal battle over the origin of the idea and a BILLION-dollar toy brand that put the wheels of modern-day Black Friday shopping riots into motion. This is the unbelievable true story you never knew about the toy craze that started it all, the Cabbage Patch Kids. Narrated and executive produced by Emmy- and Tony Award-winning actor Neil Patrick Harris Featuring interviews with Cabbage Patch Kids' creator Xavier Roberts, journalist Connie Chung, and former Coleco marketing head Al Kahan Before the Cabbage Patch Kids, no one could have imagined a world where police would need to break up fights between rampaging adults in toy stores. But after the Cabbage Patch Kids, every manufacturer in the world was desperate for their own "riot-worthy" toy. Everything had changed, and we were never going back. Billion Dollar Babies: The True Story of the Cabbage Patch Kids is the evolution of that change, told through the lens of what is arguably the most beloved toy of the 1980s. It's one filled with doll hospitals with delightfully attentive staff tending to every need of the "babies" birthed from a cabbage patch before their adoptions, dangerous counterfeit dolls and intense U.S. Customs raids, inevitable black-market sales, a glut of spin-off products, severe doll shortages and a rabid media frenzy that gave rise to a BILLION-dollar toy brand unlike anything the world had ever seen. Oh, and did we mention the "custody battle" over the origin of the idea? An unassuming and relatively unknown artist from rural Kentucky filed suit claiming she was the true creator of the dolls, setting off a contentious four-year legal battle over the Kids. This is the story you never knew about the dolls that stole America's heart and turned us all into total maniacs.

And so to an episode in which Richard, Steve and Mark were tasked with marking important life moments. Mark and Steve opted for a broadly similar seam to mine - that of parenthood. Rich, on the other hand, eschewed the opportunity to reflect on bringing new life into the world, or discovering love for the first time. He spat in the face of death and pooh-poohed the notions of age, friends and work. No, it seems that Richard's most notable moment in life is, in fact, stowing a lilo under his arm and heading off to the Mediterranean. And so it came to be that the lads ended up spending a week or so in the company of Alice Cooper, Mother Love Bone and Marillion. Steve kicks off the show with a look back at Alice Cooper (the band, not the man - he was just common-or-garden Vince Furnier at the time of this particular release) and their much-admired Billion Dollar Babies from 1973. Over 30 minutes or so the Sadmen try to come to a definitive answer to a simple question: Is it really that good? Next up is Mother Love Bone, a one-album sensation (thanks to yet another rock and roll overdose that robbed the world of a young talent) that ultimately gave us the behemoth that is Pearl Jam, and their sole 1991 release Apple. Meanwhile, over in Ibiza, Richard was whacking up the volume on the Steve Hogarth version of Marillion, who were vacationing in paradise in 1992 with Holidays In Eden. As the show rolls past album 200 in the big list, would these three manage to elbow their way into its upper echelons?
ElectraCast Media is pleased to bring you interviews with lead cast members from The Last Saturday Night courtesy of the Too Opinionated podcast with host Mike Wall. The sultry, versatile, petite (5' 4") beauty Sherilyn Fenn was born Sheryl Ann Fenn in Detroit, Michigan, into a family of musicians. The youngest of three children, her mother, Arlene Quatro, played keyboard in rock bands, her aunt is rock-star Suzi Quatro, and her grandfather, Art Quatro, was a jazz musician. Her father, Leo Fenn, was the manager of such bands as The Pleasure Seekers (the all-girl band formed by the Quatro sisters), Alice Cooper, and The Billion Dollar Babies. Fenn began her career with a number of B-movies including The Wild Life (alongside Chris Penn), skater film Thrashin' (opposite Josh Brolin) and teen-fantasy movie The Wraith (opposite Charlie Sheen). She had a memorable part in the cult teen-comedy Just One of the Guys in which she tries to seduce a teenage girl disguised as a boy, played by Joyce Hyser. Fenn landed her first starring role, as an engaged heiress to an old Southern family experiencing her sexual awakening in Zalman King's erotic drama film Two Moon Junction, after which she said she wanted to hide for a year. Fenn won her most outstanding role and made an indelible impression on the public when she was cast by David Lynch and Mark Frost as the tantalizing Audrey Horne, the high-school femme fatale from the critically acclaimed TV series Twin Peaks. The series ran from 1990 to 1991, and the character of Audrey was one of the most popular with fans, in particular for her unrequited love for FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper (played by Kyle MacLachlan) and her style from the '50s (with her saddle shoes, plaid skirts and tight sweaters). Sherilyn made a memorable impression as the cherry stem-twisting siren. Sherilyn is the lead actress for the hit new audio drama, The Last Saturday Night. She is also known for her roles on Twin Peaks, Of Mice and Men, Boxing Helena, Cave Dweller, SWAT, Goliath, Titans, The Magicians, and Shining Vale. RockerMike and Rob discuss Billion Dollar Babies is the sixth studio album by American rock band Alice Cooper, released on February 25, 1973 by Warner Bros. Records. The album became the best selling Alice Cooper record at the time of its release, hit number one on the album charts in both the United States and the United Kingdom, and went on to be certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. The album has been retrospectively praised by such critics as Robert Christgau, Greg Prato of AllMusic, and Jason Thompson of PopMatters, but The Rolling Stone Album Guide (2004) gave the album only two and a half stars. Songs were recorded in both the state of Connecticut and London, England. Lyrics cover topics and themes such as necrophilia, dental fear, horror, and sexual harassment. At 40 minutes and 51 seconds, it is the longest studio album the band has ever released; this does not count any of Cooper's solo albums. https://alicecooper.com/ https://www.loudersound.com/features/the-scandalous-story-of-alice-coopers-billion-dollar-babies https://m.facebook.com/ https://nightswithalicecooper.com/ https://open.spotify.com/artist/3EhbVgyfGd7HkpsagwL9GS https://mobile.twitter.com/alicecooper https://www.instagram.com/alicecooper/?hl=en https://music.apple.com/us/artist/alice-cooper/393703 Park Dental Care 12419 101st Ave South Richmond Hill Queens (718) 847-3800 https://www.718DENTISTS.com https://lynyrdskynyrd.com/ https://m.facebook.com/LynyrdSkynyrd https://open.spotify.com/artist/4MVyzYMgTwdP7Z49wAZHx0 https://www.rockhall.com/inductees/lynyrd-skynyrd https://www.rollingstone.com/feature/remembering-lynyrd-skynyrds-deadly-1977-plane-crash-2-195371/amp/ https://mobile.twitter.com/skynyrd?lang=en https://www.instagram.com/skynyrd/?hl=en #musicvideo #musicstudio #musiclover #musiclife #musicindustry #musiclovers #musiccover #musician#Alicecooper #musicproducer #musicproduction #musicians #musicislife #musicartist #musicphotography #musicvideos #Music #drummer #Guitar @drummers @spotify @twitter @Alicecooper #grammy @grammy @AlicecooperBilliondollarbabies #Billiondollarbabies @Billiondollarbabies Please follow us on Youtube,Facebook,Instagram,Twitter,Patreon and at www.gettinglumpedup.com https://linktr.ee/RobRossi Get your T-shirt at https://www.prowrestlingtees.com/gettinglumpedup And https://www.bonfire.com/store/getting-lumped-up/ https://app.hashtag.expert/?fpr=roberto-rossi80 https://dc2bfnt-peyeewd4slt50d2x1b.hop.clickbank.net Subscribe to the channel and hit the like button This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/rob-rossi/support https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/getting-lumped-up-with-rob-rossi/id1448899708 https://open.spotify.com/show/00ZWLZaYqQlJji1QSoEz7a https://www.patreon.com/Gettinglumpedup --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/rob-rossi/support
Alice Cooper - a story of intrigue, drugs and great stage shows. While influencing The Sex Pistols, Kiss, Bowie, the movie, “A Clockwork Orange” and Australia's Jimmy and the Boys, Alice Cooper changed from a band to an individual, and left an enormous legacy in today's rock world. This week's “Before You Die” album is Marc Bolan's “Electric Warrior”, which didn't impress the boys at all, despite Bolan's reputation, some great singles and production by Tony Visconti. Bob Ezrin hefur verið maðurinn á bak við tjöldin við upptökur margra sígildra platna, þar á meðal og bara svo við nefnum eitthvað þá sat hann við mixerinn og stýrði REC takkanum þegar plöturnar „Billion Dollar Babies“ með Alice Cooper, „The Wall“ með Pink Floyd og auðvitað „Destroyer“ með KISS voru hljóðritaðar. Ferill hans er ótrúlega fjölbreyttur og spannar allt frá Andrea Bocelli til Deftones, í gegnum Deep Purple, Peter Gabriel, Rod Stewart og Lou Reed svo eitthvað sé nefnt. Þá er Ezrin mikill mannvinur og hefur beitt sér mikið í gegnum tíðina fyrir ýmislegu góðgerðastarfi víðs vegar um heiminn. Bob Ezrin heitir fullu nafni Robert Allan Ezrin og fæddist í Toronto, Kanada þann 25.mars 1949, hann er því nokkuð nýorðinn 73 ára og því ætlum við að fagna hér. Hins vegar spannar hinn fjölbreytti ferill hans yfir 50 ár og í þessum þætti kíkjum við s.s aðeins á það sem hann hefur brallað í gegnum árin og af nógu er að taka þar. Back in the legends lounge today., Joining me for my latest chat is the original Alice Cooper drummer Neal Smith. Founding member Neal was in the band from 1967 - 1974 playing on and co writing some of the biggest rock hits ever known including Schools out, Billion Dollar Babies, No More Mr Nice Guy, Under My Wheels..... the list goes on and on. Neals amazing technique has influenced so many drummers from around the world including my good friend Robb Reiner from Anvil who kindly provided me with a great question for Neal. We had a really great chat and covered so much in a short time, it was a total pleasure chatting to this Legend!! Please Subscribe to our Channel & Dont miss any of our upcoming interviews!
On this latest episode of The Broken Record Player Podcast, I am joined once again by the host of the Metal From the Inside podcast, Sydney Taylor! Sydney sits down with me to discuss an iconic album from her favorite artist of all time, Alice Cooper! In fact, on her podcast Metal From the Inside, Sydney recently sat down with Alice Cooper and interviewed him. Make sure you check that interview out because it's really fascinating, and Alice is on point as always. Billion Dollar Babies was the biggest, most epic, and most successful album the Alice Cooper band released up to that point. Featuring hit songs like “No More Mr. Nice Guy,” ''Billion Dollar Babies,” “Elected,” and “I Love the Dead,” Billion Dollar Babies told one story after another ranging from politics to bad dental trips, from road trips gone wrong to the real life controversies created by uptight politicians and parents. At the end of the day, this album is fun, theatrical, hard rockin, and makes you feel like you're at some macabre carnival where only you, the audience, the band, and Alice, are in on the joke.
Hello! Hooray! It's good to hear more, better Alice Copper being represented in this book! Let's talk Alice Cooper, Billion Dollar Babies!

Whether it was cutting off his own head on stage with a guillotine, or false rumours that he bit the head of a chicken live on stage, his theatrical shows caused a scandal in the early 1970s. Thirty albums later and with 50 million records sold, first as the Alice Cooper band and later as the solo act, he's given us classic rock anthems like "I'm Eighteen", "School's Out" and "Billion Dollar Babies". Alice Cooper speaks to Eve Jackson from his home in Arizona about his rallying anthem "Don't Give Up", shock-rocking audiences for five decades and that chicken incident.

Pod of Thunder - 330 - Alice Cooper - Billion Dollar Babies: Chris, Nick and Andy are joined by Nick's and Andy's mom - Chris Jones to break down Alice Cooper's "Billion Dollar Babies" from 1973.
In part two of our look at bands who carried on when their famous lead singer was no longer part of the group we shine our spotlight on the Billion Dollar Babies and their 1977 album "Battle Axe". The Babies were formally the Alice Cooper Band until Alice departed in 1974.
February 1973 — “Billion Dollar Babies” by Alice Cooper Brian presents one of the biggest early 1970's glam rock groups — Alice Cooper. Their sixth studio album entitled “Billion Dollar Babies” was released in 1973, and was their most successful album to this date. Detroit native and front man Vincent Furnier took on the “Alice Cooper” persona for this highly theatrical act, complete with makeup, tuxedo, and top hat. The title of the album is a tongue in cheek look at the rise of the band itself — referring to themselves as "Billion Dollar Babies." Come along as we dig into this exceptionally entertaining and well-produced glam rock band. “Hello Hooray” This opening song was recorded earlier by Judy Collins, and the band intended it to be “Alice Cooper meets cabaret.” “Elected” This driving piece is the second single released from the album, and is a satirical look at the election process. It is a rewrite of their earlier song from 1969 entitled "Reflected." There's a surprisingly good horn section in there as well. “Billion Dollar Babies” The title track reflects their success in such a short period of time. Take a listen to this one in stereo or headphones to get the full effect. “No More Mr. Nice Guy” “No more Mr. cle-e-e-ean!” This song is the most popular track off the album. Amazingly, the shock rock front man appeared on The Muppet Show to sing this back in the day! ENTERTAINMENT TRACK: “Dueling Banjos” — from the movie “Deliverance” This Burt Reynolds movie was filmed on the Chattooga River in Georgia, and may be one of the most notable banjo riffs of all time. The movie was released in 1972 and was still popular in 1973. STAFF PICKS: “Dancing in the Moonight” by King Harvest Bruce shares this one-hit wonder sung by a Paris-based American group. It has that smooth, folk oriented sound that was quite popular back in the day. It could be an undercover werewolf song - jury's still out on that. “The Night the Lights Went out in Georgia” by Vicki Lawrence Rob’s a fan of the Carol Burnette show, and this was sung by comiedienne Vicki Lawrence. Her husband wrote the song, and when he was turned down by some famous female vocalists, Lawrence took it on, and took it to the top of the charts. “My Woman from Tokyo” by Deep Purple Wayne's rocking and riffing on this one. Although a big hit for Deep Purple, the band didn't like the song. It never actually came out as a single, and the band didn't play the song in concert until 1986. “Walk on the Wildside” by Lou Reed Brian closes out staff picks with this controversial art rock hit profiling alternate lifestyles in New York City. This is off Reed's second solo album, and the backing vocals are performed by a group called the Thunder Thighs. LAUGH TRACK: “Dead Skunk” by Loudon Wainwright III This fun song is an ode to an odor we have all experienced on a country road. “I one'd it...I two'ed it...
“It’s bigger than King Kong” Thanks to a suggestion from our listener Mick, this week Mike and Kelly discuss Battle Axe by Billion Dollar Babies. When the original Alice Cooper group went there separate ways, three members of the band formed Billion Dollar Babies. The concept for Battle Axe was to be the follow up for the the original group’s final collaboration, “Muscle of Love“. While there are some moments, listening to this album (and Alice’s “Goes to Hell” and “Lace and Whiskey” outings that were also released around this time) point out how amazing the original group’s mixture of … Continue reading →

Alice Cooper pioneered a grandly theatrical brand of hard rock that was designed to shock. Drawing equally from horror movies, vaudeville, and garage rock, the group created a stage show that featured electric chairs, guillotines, fake blood and boa constrictors. He continues to tour regularly, performing shows worldwide with the dark and horror-themed theatrics that he's best known for. With a schedule that includes six months each year on the road, Alice Cooper brings his own brand of rock psycho-drama to fans both old and new, enjoying it as much as the audience does. Known as the architect of shock-rock, Cooper (in both the original Alice Cooper band and as a solo artist) has rattled the cages and undermined the authority of generations of guardians of the status quo, continuing to surprise fans and exude danger at every turn, like a great horror movie, even in an era where CNN can present real life shocking images. Cooper was born in Detroit Michigan, and moved to Phoenix with his family. The Alice Cooper band formed while they were all in high school in Phoenix, and was discovered in 1969 by Frank Zappa in Los Angeles, where he signed them to his record label. Their collaboration with young record producer Bob Ezrin led to the break-through third album “Love It to Death” which hit the charts in 1971, followed by “Killer,” “School's Out,” ”Billion Dollar Babies,” and “Muscle of Love.” Each new album release was accompanied by a bigger and more elaborate touring stage show. 1974 saw the release of a “Greatest Hits” album, and then Cooper, in 1975, released his first solo album, “Welcome to My Nightmare” in 1975, accompanied by the legendary groundbreaking theatrical Welcome to My Nightmare concert tour. Associated with that album and tour was the ground-breaking network TV special Alice Cooper: The Nightmare. Other film and television appearances include The Muppet Show, Mae West's last film Sextette, Roadie, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearst Club Band and appearances on The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson and Tom Snyder's Tomorrow Show. The original band also made an appearance in the movie Diary of a Mad Housewife in 1979, filmed the full-length feature film Good To See You Again Alice Cooper, and Alice appeared in a 1972 episode of The Snoop Sisters. Alice's solo career skyrocketed in the late 1970's, with a succession of hit singles, including “You & Me,” and classic albums, including “Lace And Whiskey” and “From The Inside,” and bigger and even more elaborate concert tours. In the ‘80's Cooper explored different sounds, highlighted by the new wavish album “Flush The Fashion,” the heavy metal “Constrictor” and “Raise Your Fist And Yell,” and then 1989's melodic hard rock album “Trash,” which featured the massive hit single “Poison” and became his biggest selling album and single worldwide. During this period Alice also appeared in the horror films Monster Dog and John Carpenter's Prince of Darkness, and recorded songs for the soundtracks to Roadie, Class of 1984, Friday the 13 Part VI: Jason Lives and Wes Craven's Shocker. Cooper's most memorable movie appearance was as himself in Wayne's World in 1991. He also played (fittingly) Freddy Krueger's wicked step-father in Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare, and appeared on Gene Wilder's TV series Something Wilder as well as on That ‘70's Show. The 90's also saw the release of the albums “Hey Stoopid,” “The Last Temptation,” and “Fistful of Alice,” a live album. 1999 saw the release of the definitive historical 4 CD box set “The Life & Crimes of Alice Cooper,” from Rhino/Warners. In the new millenium, Cooper has been very productive and busy, writing, recording and releasing the albums “Brutal Planet,” “Dragon Town,” “The Eyes of Alice Cooper,” “Dirty Diamonds,” “Along Came a Spider,” and 2011's “Welcome 2 My Nightmare,” plus “Old School 1964-1974,” a box set celebrating the original band. He also wrote and published a memoir, “Golf Monster,” in...

This time around on Coopercast, your hosts Bobby Hazzard, (of Spring Break Forever) his royal consort Ms. Hazzard, and the Naschycast’s Troy Guinn first give you our eyewitness, up close and personal accounts of Alice’s two historic reunion performances with his former Alice Cooper Band cronies in Nashville this past May of 2017. Alice, Dennis, Michael & Neil seem to be having a grand ol’ time together, recording some new material for Alice’s new studio release and getting all of us to cross our fingers in hopes of a full reunion tour. With that in mind, it seemed topical and sensible to do a show that spotlights the time when Alice and the band had freshly parted ways. Alice was taking a path into Nightmare, Hell, asylums and, oh yes: MEGA-STARDOM while mssrs. Dunaway, Smith, and Bruce were just trying to scratch out a place to rock and roll (and dress as robots and fight onstage, as you do) and step out from under Alice’s boozy shadow. The result? The Billion Dollar Babies and their lone opus, BATTLE AXE. Listen in on our examination of the Alice Cooper Band’s hard-to-find post-Alice album, as well as the extra tracks from the sessions. We discuss why the project ultimately failed, how a factor here and there might have helped it succeed, and most importantly, help you decide if YOU should put the time into tracking down this elusive, forgotten effort. Because, as always, we at the Coopercast are your guide to all things ALICE!
In this special Artist Edition of Vinyl Analysis the one and only Alice Cooper joins Archie to dish details about his iconic record, Billion Dollar Babies. Alice also talks about guitar shredding babes, the original Hollywood Vampires, and which rock legend looked great in drag.
March 6, 2013 Dick Wagner’s songs and lead guitar have been featured on more than 200 renowned albums, garnering more than 35 Platinum and Gold records, BMI songwriter awards, Emmys, and numerous prestigious international awards. The Detroit area native helped define an era in rock history by playing lead guitar or writing songs for Alice Cooper, Aerosmith, Kiss, Lou Reed, Peter Gabriel, Meat Loaf, Steve Perry, Etta James, Rod Stewart, Tina Turner, Air Supply, Hall & Oates, Ringo Starr, Guns & Roses, Tori Amos, Frank Sinatra, and dozens of others. Legendary for his groundbreaking collaborations with Alice Cooper, Wagner was musical director, lead guitarist and co-writer of the icon’s biggest hits, including Only Women Bleed, You and Me, and Welcome To My Nightmare. Wagner was Cooper’s right hand man on such groundbreaking albums as, Welcome to My Nightmare, Alice Cooper Goes to Hell, Lace and Whiskey, From the Inside, and DaDa. Together, Cooper and Wagner co-wrote the majority of Alice Cooper’s top selling singles and albums, including more than 50 songs featured on 57 Alice Cooper albums released worldwide. As a teenage musician living an hour north of Detroit Michigan, Dick Wagner enjoyed his first taste of “big time show biz,” when he was asked to play guitar as backup for some of his musical heroes, including Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison and Little Richard. Great balls of fire! The Michigan public first took notice of Wagner’s talent in 1964, when he formed the band The Bossmen, whose songs likeBaby Boy were #1 radio favorites in Michigan. Soon Wagner was writing and producing for other Michigan bands. In the late 1960s, as Wagner’s work became more complex and featured a harder edge, he formed the wildly popular band, The Frost, recording three Billboard charted albums and drawing enthusiastic crowds to hear songs likeMystery Man and Rock N’ Roll Music. Wagner moved to New York to form Ursa Major, a seminal rock band and power trio that recorded one, self-titled, defining album for RCA. The raw musical power and artistry of Ursa Major inspired a generation of rock musicians and remains an influential album for today’s musicians. Little known factoid: the original Ursa Major lineup included Wagner on guitar and Billy Joel on keyboards, but dramas in Billy’s personal life intervened and he left the band. Wagner’s guitar virtuosity captured the attention of Lou Reed, and he was invited to play on Lou’s European Berlin tour in 1973. Wagner assembled a powerhouse band including Steve Hunter and Wagner on dueling lead guitars, Prakash John on bass, Pentti Glan on drums and Ray Colcord on keyboards. The live album, Rock N’ Roll Animal, recorded at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, remains one of the most celebrated and influential guitar albums in rock history. Lauded by Rolling Stone, Billboard, and the international press, Rock ‘N’ Roll Animal was described by renowned music critic, Robert Christgau: “This is a live album with a reason for living.” Writer Joe Viglione, in his book, A Study of Lou Reed’s Berlin and Rock N’ Roll Animal Albums, describes the guitar stylings of Hunter and Wagner: “Steve Hunter and Dick Wagner were as potent a duo as Keith Richards and Mick Taylor, and the four make-up the “Golden Era” of both The Rolling Stones and Lou Reed, that period when the recordings were beyond magical…. Lou’s 9/1/73 show still rates as numero uno in my book, for presentation, drama, craftsmanship and sheer rock and roll energy.” In September 2010, nearly 40 years after the release of Rock N’ Roll Animal, Gibson.com honored Dick Wagner and Steve Hunter among the Top 50 Guitar Solos of All Time, for their guitar performances on Intro to Sweet Jane. Amid the prestigious company of Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck and other renowned guitar greats, The Hunter-Wagner team appeared twice, with honors as well for their “ghost” guitar work on Aerosmith’s Train Kept A Rollin from their first platinum selling album, Get Your Wings. In 1972, producer Bob Ezrin brought Wagner in to play lead guitar solos on Alice Cooper’s breakthrough School’s Out album. Uncredited at the time, Wagner’s guitar solos were attributed to the Alice Cooper band. The Cooper-Wagner songwriting collaboration began with I Love the Dead, released on Cooper’s Billion Dollar Babies album. Cooper and Wagner began a prolific collaboration that spanned several decades. Together, the Cooper-Wagner songwriting team wrote 7 out of 9 of Cooper’s Top 10 hit records. Leaving Lou Reed in 1974, Wagner moved the entire Rock N Roll Animal band over to play with Alice Cooper. The first full album written and recorded by the Cooper-Wagner team, “Welcome to My Nightmare,” spawned a number of Top 10 singles. The Welcome to My Nightmare tour, with a road crew of more than 45 persons, private jets, technical wizardry, theatrical showmanship, and extravagant staging and lighting, became the biggest and highest grossing rock tour of its time. Shock rock was born. With Wagner’s studio walls lined with gold and platinum awards, he writes with the observant eye of a world traveled artist. In the late 1980’s, Wagner was commissioned to write music by the San Antonio Commission on Child Abuse. Wagner’s poignant composition,Remember the Child, painfully reflects the pain of child abuse. Renowned author/lecturer John Bradshaw discovered the song and chose it as his theme for the Emmy nominated PBS special,Homecoming. The song has since become the anthem for tens of thousands who have been scarred by child abuse, and is a catalytic tool used by many therapists in helping their patients access their hidden suffering of childhood trauma. Returning to Michigan in early 1994, Dick formed two bands, The Dick Wagner Band, and The RAW Emotion Rock Orchestra. Both later evolved into Dick Wagner and The Souls Journey Band. In 2005, Wagner relocated to Phoenix to form a new production company,Desert Dreams Productions, LLC with partners, Suzy Michelson and Alex Cyrell, entrepreneurs and founders of Omnimount Systems and Future Primitive Designs. A full service record label and artist management company, Desert Dreams specializes in “Music Production and Artist Development for the extraordinary Artist.” More than forty years after launching his storied and dynamic career, hit songwriter, guitar virtuoso, producer and arranger, Dick Wagner, remains a brilliant, prolific and vibrant force in American music. Whether rock, blues, country, jazz or spiritual, Wagner’s songs continue to detail the essence of life. His guitar playing continues to inspire guitarists worldwide, and his production values recall the era of great songs with great melodies and universally accessible lyrics.
