#11 Heavy Metal-genrens fødsel: 1977 - Let there be rock... og metal og punk!

POINT of VIEW International

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 4, 2025 57:03

1955 – Let there be Sound – an there was Sound. Foto © Keith Morris, Atlantic Records

In exclusive interviews, two legends from the world of rock climbing – Adam Ondra and Beth Rodden – share their passion for the sport.Adam Ondra, from the Czech Republic, is often described as the world's best climber. His list of hard ascents is staggering – including some 130 routes graded 9a or above. It was way back in 2012 that he climbed the world's first 9b+ in Flatanger, Norway. In 2016 at the age of 23 he repeated Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson's Dawn Wall in just eight days – it took them 19. He's a familiar face on the podium of the IFSC circuit and is currently preparing for Paris 2024 qualification.Beth Rodden is inextricably linked with some of the hardest climbs in Yosemite, having made a number of historic free ascents, including the first free ascent of Lurking Fear in 2001 and a free repeat of The Nose in 2005, set by her childhood hero, Lynn Hill. With Meltdown in 2008, she established the hardest first ascent of a single pitch ever done by a woman. Beth recently released her autobiography: A Light through the Cracks: A Climber's Story. In it, she doesn't hold back and details not just the climbing adventures, but the long-lasting trauma of a much-publicised kidnap ordeal in Kyrgyzstan, the breakdown of her relationship and climbing partnership with Tommy Caldwell, the inequality in female sponsorship and her battles with injury not to mention, herself. The UIAA thanks Mammut for their support in organising the interview with Adam Ondra. This week is another episode all about bands playing other bands' songs… well one band in particular this time around. For those about to rock: we are paying tribute to the one and only; AC/DC! It only took a little thunder and lightning striking experience by way of Kevin's lack of electrician skills to prompt this appreciation!!! It may have taken a few years off his life, but at least we got this killer concept of an episode out of it. AC/DC is such a staple in rock, but perhaps these covers will put a new spin on their amazing songs! What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection; an artist, album, or collection of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. Robert is forced to test his endurance and provide feedback, as he has no idea what he will be subjected to every week. Our hope is that we turn you on to something that was lost on your ears, or something you've simply forgotten about, or that (in our opinion) should have been the next big thing.Songs this week include:Hard-Ons – “Let There Be Rock (featuring Henry Rollins)” from Let There Be Rock - single (1991)Lemmy & Jake E. Martin Popoff may be the most prolific rock writer in the world with over 115 books to his name. Unlike other writers who prefer to delve into the gossip and tabloid portions of a bands history, Martin focuses on the music and the albums that we all love as rock fans. His latest, AC/DC at 50, is a beautiful coffee table book that features photos of the band on stage, in the studio, rare album covers and memories from their decades of dominance as the world's premier hard rock band. Martin tells 50 different stories throughout AC/DC's career that were important, inflection points or at a time when the band needed a hand. Brothers Malcolm & Angus Young may be private people but they've built a legacy that Martin has distilled to 50 points in time that you can read all the way through or pick and choose which stories you want to learn more about today. Martin even includes some personal history with the band like riding home on his bike from the record store with Let There Be Rock tied to the back. What are his favorite 3 AC/DC albums? AC/DC's 1978 banger, POWERAGE (pronounced like voltage, amperage, and sausage; NOT like volt-AGE, amper-AGE, or saus-AGE) is undoubtedly one of “the most 1978 sounding” albums that has ever been released in rock and metal.  And after giving it a listen, you'll undoubtedly agree.     It's the first album to feature Cliff Williams on bass, the first album to not have a title track and (perhaps most importantly) it's the favorite AC/DC album of both Keith Richards and Edward Van Halen.  Relative to the rest of their catalog, POWERAGE is quite simply an album beyond comparison.   Prepare to plug in “all three inputs” and remember that “you gotta bro up before you glow up” when talking to your “uncle cousin” (even if he “identifies as a noun”). Behold the advancements in “alien technology”, accept the “invitation” of embracing the uniqueness of the moment and JOIN US for the incomparable 1978-ness of AC/DC's POWERAGE.   Visit www.metalnerdery.com/podcast for more on this episode Leave us a Voicemail to be played on a future episode: 980-666-8182 Metal Nerdery Tees and Hoodies – metalnerdery.com/merch and kindly leave us a review and/or rating on the iTunes/Apple Podcasts - Spotify or your favorite Podcast app Listen on iTunes, Spotify, Podbean, Google Podcasts or wherever you get your Podcasts. Más tarde, ese mismo año, editaron el sencillo It's a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock 'n' Roll), que se convirtió en su himno. En otoño de 1977, publicaron Let There Be Rock. “In the beginning…back in 1955…” While it's the first album sporting the trademark lightning bolt logo (and the last album with Mark Evans on bass), AC/DC's 1977 masterpiece LET THERE BE ROCK remains a quintessential chapter in the AC/DC catalog and is without question one of the most blistering albums of their legendary 70's output.    Featuring the furiously unrestrained lyrical genius of Bon Scott, the limitless kinetic headbanging and scorching guitar pyrotechnics of Angus Young, and the rock-solid rhythm section of Mark Evans, Malcolm Young and Phil Rudd reinforcing the backbeat, LET THERE BE ROCK represents the ferocious next step in the evolution of hard rock and heavy metal and contains all of the requisite sleaze and debauchery you'd expect from the lads down under.   It's high time you “put on your jorts…grab a banana” and “strap in for the ride” as you prepare to receive numerous “parking lot” employment opportunities and all the “all-you-can-eat crabs” your junk can withstand. Pop the cassette in the tape deck of your “8-dawg”, turn it up to angry, and JOIN US as we reflect on the Aussie angst and blazing riffs that culminated in the miracle of music known throughout the world as LET THERE BE ROCK. We take a look at the period from 1974 to 1980 where Bon Scott, Angus and Malcolm Young led AC/DC to conquer the rock scenes in Australia, Europe and the UK before they were set to go global with the US market finally warming to them with the release of the Highway To Hell album. Bon was excited for the future with early work kicking off on the "Back in Black" project only for Bon to tragically pass away at the age of just 33 after a heavy night out drinking, leaving the band in limbo and wondering whether or not they should continue on.   Also included in this episode are AC/DC's feuds with punk rock, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple, we take a look at the deeper meaning behind the lyrics on the albums High Voltage, TNT, Dirty Deeds, Let There Be Rock, Powerage and Highway To Hell as we discover just how great of a poetic lyricist Bon actually was and we get introduced to Mark Evans, Cliff Williams, Phil Rudd and producer Mutt Lange. All this and more in this awesome episode. Enjoy!!! This episode was written, researched, narrated, edited and produced by Adam Hampton.
