February is National Career and Technical Education Month, an annual public awareness campaign sponsored by the Association for Career and Technical Education, which encourages us to celebrate the value of CTE and the achievements of CTE programs and educators across the nation. Here in Hillsboro, we have much to celebrate as we continue to expand and enhance opportunities for students through our robust CTE and Career and College Pathway programs. In HSD, our 37 CTE programs are an integral part of our larger Career and College Pathway system, which offers 65 programs across the district at the high school level. These programs provide students with hands-on learning experiences that connect them to high-demand careers in more than 13 industry sectors. Additionally, our Career and College Pathway system supports students K-12 through targeted career exploration and postsecondary planning initiatives, ensuring every student is equipped with the knowledge and skills to make informed decisions about their future. This month, we proudly recognize the contributions of our 46 dedicated CTE educators, whose pivotal role in shaping our students' futures cannot be overstated. Through engaging, career-connected learning, our educators help bridge the skills gap, foster innovation, and empower students to explore their passions while building a strong foundation for their postsecondary success. Join us in celebrating the incredible work of our CTE educators and the opportunities they provide to students throughout Hillsboro School District! To learn more about CTE and Career & College Pathways in HSD, please visit hsd.k12.or.us/ccp.   Our featured student is Liberty High School senior Ryan Howard. A field trip to the Portland Black College Expo transformed into a life-changing opportunity for Ryan when he joined fellow members of the Black Student Union at the Tony Hopson Sr. Center for Self Enhancement on Thursday, January 16. There, he received an unexpected full-ride scholarship to Langston University - Oklahoma's only Historically Black College and University, and the westernmost public four-year HBCU in the United States. The Expo provided students with a unique opportunity to explore academic options and connect directly with representatives from HBCUs and other colleges. The event featured workshops, financial aid information sessions, and one-on-one interactions with college representatives. Ryan's success story exemplifies the opportunities available through such networking events. Congratulations and way to go, Ryan! You make us Proud to be HSD! First semester ends on Thursday, January 30. There will be no school for all students on Friday, January 31 and Monday, February 3 as teachers prepare grades. School resumes and second semester begins on Tuesday, February 4. Hot News is produced and emailed to HSD families and staff each week school is in session. Institutionalized self-enhancement in academia pressures us to showcase only our successes while hiding our struggles and failures. This culture can be overwhelming, making it difficult to stay true to ourselves. In this discussion, I share my thoughts on navigating this environment by focusing on who I want to be and where I want to go. If your goal is to strategize and get ahead at all costs, that's a path you can choose. However, if you believe there are more important things, consider embracing authenticity and aiming for personal happiness. By making conscious choices about our values and goals, we can find a way to thrive in academia without losing ourselves.

The Philosophy of Self-Enhancement digs into how we try to better ourselves, whether it's through learning new skills, improving our health, or growing our understanding of the world. It's all about the drive to be better than we are now, touching on why we do it, how it changes us, and the effects on our lives and the world around us. This isn't just about hitting the gym or acing a test; it's finding the reasons we seek to improve and the ways those efforts shape our identity and our connections with others.

In a kind of meta cross-over with our Decoding Academia series, we're going to decode a journal club discussion between two well-known health optimisers: Dr. Peter Attia and Dr. Andrew Huberman. So you get to listen to two academics talk about two other academics talk about academic papers... we know...We've already been introduced to the bulging biceps and morning sun-drenched routines of Huberman elsewhere but this is our first introduction to Peter Attia, MD. Attia is a former ultra-endurance athlete and a physician in the field of longevity and performance, a podcaster (who isn't amirite?!?) and author of "Outlive: The Science And Art Of Longevity".Attia introduces us to a paper that casts doubt on the supposed general life-extending properties of a diabetes drug called Metformin. This is a drug that is apparently very well known in the biohacker/life extension communities and one that Attia administered to himself for a number of years despite the rather preliminary evidence. This is the first of many indicators that both gentlemen are certainly on the bleeding edge of self-medicating experimentation, doggedly pursuing the elusive goals of huge pectoral muscles, minds that laugh at the concept of cognitive decline, and bodies that will live... well for a lot longer than Matt and Chris! We get to hear about week-long starvation regimes, medications that take the edge of pizza and doughnut binges, dealing with month-long nausea from self-dosing experimental treatments, and frequent prick-blood tests all for the sake of optimising, optimising, optimising...Huberman's paper (a preprint, actually) falls more into the "big, if true" category - although he seems fairly confident himself. Does *believing* you are getting a treatment generate the relevant physiological and neurological effects in the body that could mean we can bypass the need for certain pharmacological substances entirely, including some vaccines?!? Based on the results of a small-N, fMRI study that reports mixed results, Huberman muses... maybe! Or how about those other small-N studies, with p-values hovering suspiciously close to 0.05 that report other counterintuitive findings? We will leave it to Huberman to explain. But the bad stuff aside, Huberman and Attia (especially Attia) actually do a pretty decent job talking about how to approach research papers and some of the pros and cons of different approaches. Chris and Matt thus have ample opportunities to give credit where credit's due and demonstrate that they are the fair-minded souls everyone knows them to be! In any case, it's an interesting peak into an alternative health optimiser world. It seems to be a rather "serious" hobby a bit like body modification or tattoos. But who are we to judge? Matt likes cultivating succulent plants and Chris is into eating sushi in lush forests. So biohacking, self-experimentation for longevity? Well, at least it's an ethos. Also featuring, an introduction that covers Irish history, the most humble guru in the gurusphere, and our very own theory of guru cringeosity!LinksJournal Club with Dr. Peter Attia | Metformin for Longevity & The Power of Belief EffectsThe Most Arrogant thing Bret Weinstein has ever said? Finding Fertile Ground Podcast: Stories of Grit, Resilience, and Connection

Badass Lotus Flower Libra Forde is my first installment of my "Four Badass Black Women" series. You can reach her here: https://www.facebook.com/librabetall or https://www.instagram.com/be.tall/. Libra's mom named her Libra because her pregnancy brought balance to her life. At 6 feet, five inches, Libra continues that balance in her own life.Born in Harlem, NYC, Libra is single mom to three daughters. After living in Hawaii for many years, she decided to move to Oregon to finish her daughters’ education. Now in her sixth year here, Libra said she ended up living in Damascas without knowing much about the area...or that they would end up being the only Black family for miles around them. When she worked with special needs kids in Vermont, she found her calling to advocate for and support young people. Now she is the chief operations officer for Self-Enhancement, Inc, and chair of the North Clackamas School District. Self-Enhancement Inc. is a multi-service organization, guiding underserved youth to realize their full potential. Libra first learned about race when she was five or six. Her parents were both activists. Libra’s life was built around stories of “firsts,” and her parents told her this was what they expected from her and nothing less. She loved living in the brown state of Hawaii...it was the first time in her life that being Black was not the issue. When she settled into Hawaii, she called her family and said, “I’m never coming back.” She’s glad that her daughters grew up in a place where they could appreciate their brownness, immersed in beaches, blue sky, and joy. When she moved back to the mainland, she realized she had not talked to her daughters about race. Libra does profound Facebook Lives on a regular basis. I asked her about a recent one when she talked about Oregon’s physical beauty underlain by its ugly history. She shared a story of vacationing in Coos Bay with her kids, and activist friends shared that there had been a racist incident not far from where was vacationing. The problem she sees in Oregon’s rural areas is that Oregon had laws that upheld discrimination, but some white people don’t seem to realize that these laws don’t exist anymore. As a result of the racism, Black people don’t want to go to these places. “We have to stop upholding these outdated laws,” she says. “You need to uphold Black voices in rural areas.” In response to the #BlackLivesMatter protests, Libra started an activist movement that could be done in cars. The first Death of Racism event had great support—at least 96 cars showed up. The event was particularly powerful for Libra because they gathered on a stretch of highway where her daughter had been chased. Counter-protesters showed up, but she loved the opportunity to go against such a group in a way that was positive and peaceful. As a domestic violence survivor, she’s always conscious of the fact that she’s made some difficult choices that have not been easy for her kids. When they arrived in Oregon, they experienced a tragedy that took them from a full family to being homeless in 24 hours. The healing came through her telling her story. Libra's favorite flower is the lotus, because it grows in the mud and the worst conditions. I asked her what she would say to her 21-year-old self, and again, without skipping a beat, she said, “Never dim your light. Stay bright...in dimming my light, I realized how damaging that is for an individual, and I don’t want that for anybody...if someone thinks you’re too bright, give them some sunglasses.” Next week I interview Jewels Pedersen, a writer, performer, and activist...another badass Black woman with three daughters.

Before joining Meyer, Ms. Adams ran the $6.5 billion capital markets fund at The Standard, a publicly traded company. At the Standard, she oversaw six trading desks that included several bond strategies, preferred equities, derivatives and other risk mitigation strategies. Ms. Adams is the chair of the prestigious Oregon Investment Council, the board that manages approximately $100 billion of public pension and other assets for the State of Oregon. During her tenure as chair, the Oregon state pension fund has been the top-performing public pension fund in the United States. The top-of-class performance was made possible by a series of strategic changes, overseen by Ms. Adams, that boosted returns and decreased risk. Ms. Adams serves on the boards of directors of the Albina Vision Trust, the Self Enhancement, Inc. Foundation and Oregon Public Broadcasting, where she also serves on the investment committee. She has engaged in pro bono legal work on behalf of the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights, the Homeless Prenatal Program in San Francisco, and the Children’s Defense Fund. Her 2016 Ted talk — A Homegirl’s Guide to Being Powerful — about her path to becoming a more thoughtful investor and the role of investment capital in achieving social justice has more than 10,000 views. Ms. Adams holds a BA with academic distinction from Carleton College, a Juris Doctorate from Stanford Law School, where she was on the Law and Policy Review and the Co-President of the Law Student Association, and a Masters of Business Administration from the Stanford Graduate School of Business, where she served as the CEO of Challenge for Charity. She has received many accolades, but is most proud of being named a Woman of Distinction by the Portland Business Journal in 2017.

The attractive and uplifting 62,000-square-foot space includes a gymnasium, performing arts auditorium, dance studio, library, computer lab and science lab. The building is located in a neighborhood with a history of gang violence, drug dealing, crime and neglect. Before construction began, Tony Hopson Sr. and the other SEI senior staff sat down with the Kerby Blocc Crips, the gang in control of the neighborhood at the time, they discussed SEI’s mission, enlisting their support of the project. In yesterday's post, “My 7 Favorite Practices for Engineering the Good Life,” I included a curveball of sorts—right at the end. Chase down fear. While all seven have been game changers, that one claims the pinnacle. The fact is, it's the hardest one to embrace time and again, but it's never ceased to move my life forward in very clear, tangible ways. Still, every time I have to talk myself through the same process.… How can I possibly take on something this substantial? What am I thinking? That one's just too big, too complicated, too ambitious. This time, surely, you've overstretched, Sisson. (This Mark's Daily Apple article was written by Mark Sisson, and is narrated by Tina Leaman)
