Mark interviews Reenita Malhotra Hora, an award-winning screenwriter, novelist and audio producer. Prior to the interview, Mark shares a brief personal update and a word about this episode's sponsor. Learn more about SciFidea and the awesome Dyson Sphere Sci-Fi Writing Contest. In the interview, Mark and Reenita talk about: How Reenita has been writing her entire life and her love of storytelling in varous forms The manner in which life can be more fun when we are creating and when we don't always take life so seriously Focusing for a long time on how she could help her clients get THEIR stories out there The decision, in mid-pandemic, to begin to take her writing career in her own hands and developing her own IP The release of her book OPERATION MOM, which was released by Harper Collins India initially in 2011 Buying the rights back for the book in the rest of the world (ie, outside India), as well as for the subsidiary rights for film, TV, etc The publisher's belief that the Western world isn't at all interested in reading a book set in Mumbai Reenita's own screenplay adaptation of the novel (written in the last year) which she decided to set in Hoboken, New Jersey How the story and the comedy in the screenplay remains the same but how the specific details and specific jokes have been modified and adjusted for the different market Just how much Reenita has been learning about publishing in the past few years The way that working with a smaller, boutique publisher can be a good experience, but how an author self-publishing it can potentially work a bit better because of the control they have Winning the Santa Barbara International Screenplay Award and being a finalist for the New York International Screenplay Award The unique approach Reenita took with her newer book Shadow Realms and the multiple formats she has created it in The importance of understanding the business of storytelling The two active podcasts Reenita has created, including the True Fiction Project, which explores the journey of story from non-fiction to fiction The different opportunities for various sponsorships in these two different podcasts Diversity being so important, but the fact that it has become such a recent "buzzword" The interesting compromise of the diversity of a community like Hoboken (which has shades of similarity to Mumbai and offers a window into the Indian-American community) How it can be fun to play with stereotypes and tropes and to turn them around Reenita's passion about bringing the experience of South-Asians to an American audience Describing her experiences as being akin to a street-food in Mumbai And more... After the interview Mark reflects on a few things from the conversation, including the narrow way many New York publishers look at setting in a novel, which hasn't changed all that much since the early 1990s, and the dynamic way Reenita has explored storytelling in creative ways, while patiently learning more about the industry. Based partly in San Francisco and partly in Los Angeles, her experiences are akin to 'Bhel Puri,' the street food of Mumbai, her native place — a delectable mix of tastes (and preferences), meshed together with a bug or two for good measure. Passionate about storytelling the Indian narrative, Reenita writes characters and themes that reflect the South Asian experience whether set in South Asia or in the Western world. As a writer she has contributed to Reuters, South China Morning Post, Wall Street Journal, New York Times, CNN, Times of India, Rolling Stone, National Geographic Kids, Cartoon Network Asia, Disney and more. As an on-air news reporter, writer, and producer, she has contributed to Bloomberg, RTHK Radio 3, Monocle Radio and the BBC. She has two active podcasts - 'Shadow Realm' (narrative fantasy fiction) and the 'True Fiction Project' (unscripted to scripted). Her female-driven comedy, 'Operation Mom' is a Santa Barbara Screenplay Awards winner, a Chanticleer International Book Awards GrandPrize winner and an Eric Hoffer Book Award Grand Prize winner. Her YA fantasy screenplay, ‘Shadow Realm' is a Script2Comic and Launchpad Prose finalist, a Screencraft quarterfinalist, and a selected nominee for the New Media Film Festival. Can Gurel, a research lead at Delphi Digital, joins as a co-host given his recent in-depth Privacy report. In this episode, we covered: The importance of privacy for humans and in crypto Financial privacy as a human right The limits of what can be built on a fully transparent chain Different ways teams deal with regulation in the ever-evolving crypto landscape Whether we can expect most liquidity to be in private form in the next 5-10 years In the technical segment, we dove into various infrastructures of private design, including privacy built on L1s, L2s, dApps and via smart contracts like Tornado Cash. We discussed Penumbra's unique two-phase protocol for privacy vs. concurrent-access-to-state and the potential of threshold decryption as a go-to MEV solution. Hot damn, we have a lot of amazing shows to talk about this week, with Coral, Adam, Russ and Nathan. We just right into our favorite with our Stranger Things Season 4 Recap and how we are all waiting on bated breath for the last 2 episodes to drop in July. Lucky for us, there are so many crazy good shows to watch like, the return of The Orville. Personally I like the new look of the show and we find it weird having to compare it to good Star Trek, but we eventually get to Orville Episode 1 “Electric Sheep” & Episode 2 “Shadow Realms.” This week we also talk about Star Trek Strange New Worlds Episode 5 “Spock Amoke” & Episode 6 “Lift Us Where Suffering Cannot Reach” and if that wasn't enough sci-fi, we get to dissect Obi-Wan Kenobi episode 3 & 4 and figure out why some of us love it when some are losing patience with the show. Those of us who watched Ms. Marvel, generally agree, this show is fun. Check out Ms. Marvel episode 1, “Generation Why” on Disney Plus. A rarity for our podcast, we are finally getting into Amazon's crazy anti superhero show, “The Boys” season 3 Episode 1-3. I felt bad because I was unable to get through Episode 4 and Russ and Adam were frustrated trying their best now to spoil that episode. Phew, that was a lot of shows. I hope you are all watching these fun shows with us! –Nathan Email

At GDC 2019, Double Fine boss Tim Schafer is losing his voice, but he still croaked through his annual Splitscreen appearance to discuss the union joke he told on stage at the IGF awards, the state of Psychonauts 2, and his thoughts on Google Stadia. We explained to him how unions work so that he can tell even better jokes about them next year. In the second half of the episode, Gabe Amatangelo of QC Games told us about his history at Bioware, the cancellation of Shadow Realms, and the eventual creation of a not-so-different dungeon crawler called Breach, which launched in early access earlier this year.

As an author, playwright, poet and translator, Normandi Ellis is perhaps most well-known for her translation of the Egyptian Book of the Dead, Awakening Osiris. Among her other works are: Feasts of Light and Dreams of Isis, Voice Forms (poetry) and Sorrowful Mysteries and Other Stories(fiction). She is a past winner of the Bumbershoot Award for Literature and grants from the Kentucky Foundation for Women. Normandi's newest books on Egypt are Imagining the World into Existence, which Jean Houston called a masterpiece work, and Invoking the Scribes. She just received news that her poetry chapbook, Words on Water, poems written and inspired by the Hierogamos of Hathor and Horus will be published by Finishing Line Press next year. Normandi runs Penhouse retreat center in Kentucky and teaches metaphysics classes at the Spiritualist affiliated Camp Chesterfield in Indiana. Aside from writing she is a trance medium and will be leading a trip to Egypt again in November 2014 with Nicki Scully. For more information visit her website www.normandiellis.com

Now that we have all that GOTY 2014 nonsense out of the way, we can get down to some business as usual. It was CES a few weeks ago and while Valve may have been conspicuous by their absense, there was unsurpisingly a strong VR presence: Oculus were there showing off their latest wares, but it was Razer who stole the headlines with their new open source solution, OSVR. There's also been a ton of new game announcements & leaks, from Sci-Fi strategy opuses like Total War: Warhammer and Sid Meier's Starships to new kickstarter hopes Identity and Shadowrun: Hong Kong (which is actually more of a sure thing, having almost reached it's penultimate stretch goal at time of writing). And then there's the spectacularly underwhelming early access launch of Sony's, H1Z1, which so far seems to be more of a cynical landgrab than a worthy Day Z clone. With Gamescom happening the other week we had so much news to talk about it ended up stretching across two whole episodes! We also had no Patrick this time, but Adam joined us towards the end of the episode to discuss Bioware's newly announced assymmetric action RPG, Shadow Realms and a few other things besides. Before that though was Microsoft's controversial exclusivity deal for Rise of the Tomb Raider and a whole bunch of exclusive new titles for the PS4 including Michel Ancel's Wild. Lucky for you this podcast isn't exclusive, or even less of you would be listening to it! We'll be back next week with even more on Gamescom. This week perennial guest Laura Kate Dale returns to talk us through the highs, lows and generic mediums of the Gamescom press conferences. We liked Wild, Shadow Realms and Sony’s streaming plans, we did not enjoy the continued abuse of the word ‘exclusive’. After that Laura tells us about windmilling furiously in Mount Your Friends, while Tom tries to explain why curves are unpredictable in Towerfall (he failed geometry). Meanwhile Pip has been getting to grips with Dark Souls, raising the question, at what point does challenging minimalism just become bad game design?
