This week's episode is one that Mark and Scott had an absolute blast recording and are still pumped that it happened. We have the inimitable James Hudson from Druid City Games on with this today and we got to talk a wide array of things with him. In addition to discussing gaming from an industry perspective, he also gave us a number of heads up on things from Wonderland's War, Tidal Blades, and even the future of Bloodstone! Check it out and let us know your thoughts! Meanwhile, check out next week's off-week episode featuring all the extra conversation including the future of Sorcerer City! This episode's segments: 00:00:00 - Intro / Hi James! 00:02:27 - What's Been on the Table 00:07:45 - Topic of the Week: Why Do "Bigger" Publishers Use Crowdfunding? 00:27:14 - Should Games Get Second Chances? 00:36:41 - Table / Shelf / Trade 00:56:12 - Rotating Segment: Surprise Party! 01:02:28 - What's Next for Druid City? 01:06:06 - Plugs / Outro Thank you again to James for joining us today! Here are the links to what we talked about with him: Madcala Kickstarter Page: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/druidcitygames/madcala Druid City's Main Website: https://www.druidcitygames.com Druid City's Discord: https://discord.gg/CQutpamzff Druid City's YouTube: www.youtube.com/@realdruidcitygames **As a quick note: we've gotten the question of what score ranges would each segment of Table/Shelf/Trade normally relate to? At least for Mark, a Shelf is 8+, Table is 5-7, though a 5 isn't that exciting of a table, and a Trade is 4-. **When Scott said Telescope in his review of The Search for Planet X, he meant Observatory. **When talking about Stamp Swap, Mark didn't have any foreknowledge of the game's existence. He was simply expecting an I Cut, You Choose game from the company for a very long time. You can email us at boardallthetimegaming@gmail.com. A comprehensive list of what transpires in RRR would sound like the incoherent ramblings of someone undergoing a very potent trip, which is why we merely indulge in a curated list. While Mark does not retract his naming Decision to Leave as his favourite film of 2022, he will concede that it leads to a less absurdist discussion. It also features slightly fewer dance numbers. After much popular demand, we present to you the much-anticipated return of Masterpiece Theatre. Our esteemed patron--who is utterly unaware of our existence, such is his focus on his twin demesnes of fastness and furiousness--deserves no less. Of course, should His Grace, the Reverend Doktor Doktor Vincent, Duke of Diesel, Esq. O.B.E. ever condescend to acknowledge us plebs, we would no doubt swoon from appreciation. Say what you want about the evils of filthy lucre, but I find it amazing how managers turn communitarian and high-minded when it comes to fair remuneration. "Don't you believe in the project?" "Aren't you committed to the team?" et al get deployed all the time when people want to, you know, get compensated for their work. One can't help but notice that racialized workers and women get subjected to such nonsense at a higher-than-average rate. Volunteerism is noble and good, but stiffing workers is not. When someone is trying to elide the difference, you can bet that they're up to something.Games Played Last Week:01:12 -Wonderland's War (Tim Eisner, Ben Eisner, & Ian Moss, Druid City Games, 2022)04:36 -Fantasy Realms: Deluxe Edition (Bruce Galssco, WizKids, 2022)08:55 -Lands of Galzyr (Seppo Kuukasjärvi and Sami Laakso, Snowdale Design, 2022)12:12 -Horizons of Spirit Island (R. There was a time you could just stroll in a big box store in the United States and just buy a miniatures skirmish game that was actually pretty good. Sure, it didn't have analog movement or anything, but it used true line of sight and had amazing plastic terrain. So much plastic. Like, a whole lot. One the one hand, Hasbro says they're bringing HeroScape back, but on the other, ain't no way it's coming back the same as it was. They're going to bleed us dry for those little pre-painted dolls--even assuming they're still pre-painted, that is.Games Played Last Week:02:22 -My Father's Work (T.C. Danni Loe from Pandasaurus Games and James Hudson from Druid City Games rejoin the show to talk about the benefits and increasing drawbacks of producing games through Kickstarter. KS provides upfront cash and immediate feedback from fans, which is great. It also has huge issue with lack of moderation, the move to blockchain, and overall unresponsiveness to the very creators it says it wants to highlight. James and Danni break all of that down for you. All right, we need to talk about Sokka. Another staple of kid's shows is often The Annoying One. I don't know why, but they're often there. Steven Universe had Ronaldo, but they knew to use him sparingly. Sokka is so aggressively obnoxious in the first two episodes it is a miracle anyone makes it to episode three. He could have just been the complainer, but additionally his monumental and gratuitous misogyny is so bad that one wonders what Suki (an awesome character) ever saw in him. Sure, he gets better, but always in my mind the Early Days Sokka looms over the show like some terrible shadow.00:59 AYURIS: On Mars (Vital Lacerda, Eagle-Gryphon Games, 2020)Games Played Last Week:02:33 -Cryo (Tom Jolly & Luke Laurie, Z-Man Games, 2021)07:22 -Red Outpost (Raman Hryoryk, Lifestyle Boargames Ltd, 2019)11:38 -Cantaloop: Book 1--Breaking into Prison (Friendemann Findeisen & Grzegorz Kobiela, Lookout Games, 2020)15:36 -Brass: Birmingham (Gavan Brown, Matt Tolman, & Martin Wallace, Roxley, 2018)19:14 -Clever Cubed (Wolfgang Warsch, Schmidt Spiele, 2020)21:09 -Sleeping Gods (Ryan Laukat, Red Raven Games, 2021)23:38 -PARKS (Henry Audubon, Keymaster Games, 2019)27:16 -Shards of Infinity: Into the Horizon (Gary Arant, Justin Gary, Ryan Sutherland, Jared Saramago, Mataio Wilson, & Jason Zila, Stone Blade Entertainment, 2021)29:19 -Pickomino Deluxe (Reiner Knizia, Zoch Verlag, 2018)31:53 -Witchstone (Martino Chiacchiera & Reiner Knizia, R&R Games, 2021)34:48 -Empire of the Stars (Adam West, CrossCut Games, 2021)40:15 -The Grimm Masquerade (Tim Eisner, Ben Eisner, & James Hudson, Druid City Games, 2019)News (and why it doesn't matter):45:53 Fundraiser on Twitch for Food Banks Canada on October 2nd at 3 PM EST.Guests: No Pun Included, Board Game Barrage, the SVWAG crew! It is the nature of the Walker who cries wolf that if he repeats the claim often and consistently enough, it might come true eventually. Despite the unrelenting constancy of Chinese New Year, some games do actually get produced--just only after they have emerged from their purgatorial delay in the never-ending holiday. So it is with Tidal Blades; after claims of "any day now" for years, it finally arrived, like some unwieldy piece of oversized deluxe... well... is it flotsam or jetsam? We must review it to find out. James Hudson did not always start out as a board game creator. World of Warcraft dominated his life for almost 9 years until a friend convinced him to come to a board game night and he was exposed to Power Grid. Since that night James has been involved with collaboration efforts with Druid City Games, now a part of Skybound Entertainment, to publish amazing games that help fuel that organic passion of playing games with other people around the same table. Drew and Chris have a conversation with James about the seasons of his faith, the disillusionment with the American church culture, and the sacred space that the board game scene can provide for those looking to have relationships across multiple divides.
Our friend James Hudson, head of Druid City Games and the tabletop division of Skybound Games, joins us to revisit ethics in board game media, as well as answer the many questions we throw at him. Plus Christina asks how ugly game art happens, Shoe discusses the importance of story in games that don’t center around story, and Mike shares some of his favorite board game influencers. Times are bad. Children no longer obey their parents and everyone is running a Kickstarter. It is trivially easy to string together quotations going back to the dawn of human civilization lamenting how the youth are ruining everything, how the good old days were so great, and wishing we could go back to the golden age. See, I blame it on the baby boomers aging and succumbing more and more to nostalgia. There was A Time Before. Historians no doubt will soon abandon the antiquated notions of BCE and CE, and will instead resort to the infinitely more practical Pre-SVWAG and Post-SVWAG eras. In the dim and distant past of Pre-SVWAG, people had the audacity to release games before we could weigh in on them officially.
