I always love going to board game conventions, shows, conferences or whatever you want to call them. Just walking into the halls and seeing lots of excited people who share the same hobby is invigorating. The prospect of catching up with friends whom I might not otherwise see is wonderful. Finally meeting the people I only know from social media face-to-face is fabulous. Board game events are always very much like a home from home. Yet, my visit to Berlin Brettspiel Con 2023 and the Spiel des Jahres awards a few weeks ago took this to another level. It is rare that you can combine going to your hometown with attending a board game convention. So when it does happen, you jump at the opportunity. If you're also expecting to see a lot of people you normally only see maybe once a year at another show, as well as people you have so far only "met" on social media, then you know you're onto a winner. Being able to get demos of new and upcoming games is the cherry on top. Berlin Brettspiel Con 2023 was promising to fulfil all of these hopes, which set the bar very high. The question is whether it delivered. NB: "Language independent" can be a loaded term, and we confess we used it a tad sloppily in our discussion of Tribune. Latin is used throughout the game, and ain't nobody speaks Latin as their first language anymore, but nonetheless in hindsight we could have been more sensitive to those more familiar with non-Latin alphabets. Thus, we should say that the original Primus Inter Pares expansion and the new Spielworxx Tribune are language-independent but not alphabet-independent. I dare any game with an appropriate time period as a theme try to get away with cuneiform.

In episode 31 we, which is Carsten and ode, talk to Uli Blennemann from Spielworxx and board game designer Matt Wolfe about their new game Squaring Circleville which will hit Kickstarter in May 2021. We also talk about game development and poop cubes.--- FOR i-tunes USERS: Please refer to this link to our website for the shownotes that contain the photos of the game that do not seem to be accepted by Apple https://meeplecast.de/episode-31-squaring-circleville-with-uli-blennemann-matt-wolfe ---To guide our listeners through what we are talking about in Squaring Circleville, we are gonna show you some photos of the prototype below. Please note that the artwork is nearly finalized, the wooden components are - surprise: not final and subject to change!  Above you see the main area of Squaring Circleville with unfinished sectors and completed ones. Players, on their turn, can move their supervisor across Circleville and have two actions and, by executing them, place cubes of their colour in the main area. There are red or blue cube spots which represent deconstructing or constructing roads and buildings to be razed - which works by replacing them with a player cube. There are several alternative actions to choose from as well. As soon as a sector's last cube space is occupied by a player's cube, a majority scoring is done and the sector is complete. A sector tile is then put onto it representing the completed version of the sector. Now, buildings or beautifications can be built or done on this. By winning a sector majority scoring, erecting a building or beautifying a completed sector, players advance on one of the four quadrant tracks. The player who advanced the farthest on each track when Circleville is completely reshaped, will be awarded the maximum number of victory points for it. Above you see the player board showing five columns, the left being the one offering alternative actions while the four on coloured background  represent the four main actions: deconstruct road, construct road, raze structure, build structure. At the end of their turns, players take a disc from the action selection rondel and place it on their player board - improving the action of the disc's colour! The right edge of the player board offers three slots for equipment tiles (permanent bonus effects) or achievement tiles. Above you see the action selection rondel. On your turn, you move your assistant 1-2 spaces in clockwise order. The colour of the spot it lands on and the colour of the tile next to it define the actions you will take. Yellow landed on blue with a green tile next to it. Blue is road construction and green is erecting a building on a free construction site on a completed section. Upon finishing your turn you take the green tile and place it in the green column on your player board - improving the building action. Everytime you complete a sector you will take the next year bonus tile (small ones) and the achievement tile next to it. While the year bonus tile is yours to use, the latter is placed on one of the long rectangular spaces in the left part of the photo. The alternative action "take achievement tile" allows you to choose from one of the tiles already placed there. Katherine is one of four solo bots Matt Wolfe designed. They all work differently and are easy to handle. You can even let them participate when playing with friends to make, say, a 3-pl-game with two human players.Links:Spielworxx Website: https://www.spielworxx.de/Squaring Circleville on BGG https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/292900/squaring-circleville99 Percent Invisible podcast https://99percentinvisible.org/Tharos on BGG https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/292901/tharos

Guten Morgen liebe Klasse! Duck and cover y'all!

"And Blass is reeling from Yves Saint-Laurent's inverted atomic drop! But wait, who's that running towards the ring? IT'S THE BIG O! Oscar de la Renta is coming to the assistance of his tag-team partner! We thought Pierre Cardin had locked him backstage in his dressing room but no, here he is, steel chair in hand! And he levels YSL with one perfect shot to the head!!! Can you believe it? This the kind of action you can only see on pay-per-view in Versailles!" 01:24 AYURIS: Trickerion: Legends of Illusion (Richard Amann & Viktor Peter, Mindclash Games, 2015)Games Played Last Week:04:06 -Deities (Gary Kim, Mandoo Games, 2022)08:24 -Manhattan (Andreas Seyfarth, Hans im Glück, 1994)10:48 -Votes for Women (Tory Brown, Fort Circle Games, 2022)18:43 -Skytear Horde (Giacomo Neri and Riccardo Neri, Skytear Games, 2023)23:29 -Barony (Marc André, Matagot, 2015)24:49 -Don't L.L.A.M.A. Dice (Reiner Knizia, AMIGO, 2021)24:59 -Antike II (Mac Gerdts, PD-Verlag, 2015)25:54 -Tribune (Karl-Heinz Schmiel, Spielworxx, 2021)31:20 -Cockroach Poker (Jacques Zeimet, Drei Magier Spiele, 2004)31:49 -Karuba (Rüdiger Dorn, HABA, 2015)34:33 -Fealty (R. "L'enfer, c'est les autres," wrote Sartre, which translates into "why don't nobody wanna play with me?" You see, Sartre only liked his consims and other historical wargames, but people didn't want to join him--possibly on account of there having been less history back in his old-timey days. His angst over unplayed games was the key inspiration of his existentialist philosophy. Camus tried to show him that the answer is to play with randos with his work "The Stranger."  01:52 AYURIS: Tribune (Karl-Heinz Schmiel, Spielworxx, 2021)Games Played Last Week:06:33 -Imperium: The Contention (Gary Dworetsky, Contention Games, 2021)09:57 -Distilled (Dave Beck, Paverson Games, 2023)17:25 -Quartermaster General (Second Edition): Total War (Ian Brody, Ares Games, 2020)22:26 -Sniper Elite: Eagle's Nest (Roger Tankersly and David Thompson, Rebellion Unplugged, 2022)28:53 -Tapple (Uncredited, The Op Games, 2021)30:29 -The Great Zimbabwe (Jeroen Doumen and Joris Wiersinga, Splotter Spellen, 2012)36:52 -Guards of Atlantis II: Tabletop MOBA (Artyom Nichipurov, Wolff Designa, 2021)41:07 -Hanamikoji (Kota Nakayama, EmperorS4, 2013) 43:49 -Darwin's Journey (Simone Luciani and Nestore Mangone, ThunderGryph Games, 2023)News (and why it doesn't matter):46:16 Thank to Warmboy, our Discord, and all our listeners47:18 Walker is disgusted by How to Lose a Guy in 10 DMs47:53 Planet Unknown reprint/expansion48:50 Shards of Infinity on crowdfunding49:52 Ryan Laukat's Creature Caravan50:28 Mythic Games' serial quasi-extortion; 6: Siege and all upcoming projects 55:40 Cysmic's many versions; people ask for economy but back the toys58:44 Walker's patience is running out along with his shelf space59:30 Faiyum: Privileges expansion1:00:31 Topic: Right Game, Wrong PeopleAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
