In this episode, Karin and Elizabeth talk about their experiences as exhibitors on KingVention ranging from 2016 till 2025. They discuss the first event and how fantastic that was with the big Dangerous Cover, the people they interviewed and remember Nicole, the student who did the course Michael Jackson Studies and who passed away not very long after. We dedicate this episode to her. We go into 2022 when Elizabeth was at the event, 2023 and 2025 where we represented the Journal, sold and signed the hardback and the paperback version of The Dangerous Philosophies. This year we did two talks. One about AI and Michael Jackson together with The Big MJ Debate and a MJDLO about the academic void: How to preserve Michael Jackson's Legacy and how Fans can Contribute. Helen Verhoeven is beeldend kunstenaar. Ze studeerde onder andere aan het San Francisco Art Institute, de New York Academy of Art en de Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. Haar werk werd wereldwijd tentoongesteld en ontving in 2008 de Koninklijke Prijs voor Vrije Schilderkunst en in 2010 de Wolvecampprijs. Verhoevens werk bevindt zich in collecties van het Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, het Centraal Museum Utrecht en The Museum of Contemporary Art in Miami. In 2019 won ze de ABN AMRO kunstprijs. Verhoevens werk is nu te zien in de tentoonstelling ‘Good Mom/ Bad Mom' in het Centraal Museum in Utrecht. De tentoonstelling houdt zich bezig met de vraag hoe moeders en het moederschap worden gerepresenteerd. Ook presenteert Verhoeven haar nieuwste werk in een solotentoonstelling in Annet Gelink Gallery. De tentoonstelling opent tijdens de Amsterdam Art Week. In this episode Elizabeth and Karin discuss the essay by Philipp Dominik Keidl where he explores how Michael Jackson fans responded to the sexual abuse allegations made by Wade Robson and James Safechuck in the 2019 documentary Leaving Neverland. The focus is on a phenomenon Keidl terms "forensic fandom," where fans produce counter-documentaries and online content to defend Jackson's reputation by discrediting his accusers. One of the important questions they ask is why using Michael Jackson and compare his dancing and financial gains and losses as deindustrialised. They ask if using only two documentaries, of which one is from Bashir -Living With Michael Jackson - and the other, This Is It, are reliable for academic research? Dima Srouji is a Palestinian architect, artist, and researcher born in 1990 in Nazareth. She holds a Bachelor of Architecture from Kingston University (2012) and a Master of Architecture from the Yale School of Architecture (2016). Srouji's interdisciplinary practice explores the ground as a repository of cultural narratives and potential collective healing. She employs various media—including glass, text, archives, maps, plaster casts, and film—to interrogate concepts of cultural heritage and public space, particularly within the Middle East and Palestine. Her collaborative approach involves working closely with archaeologists, anthropologists, sound designers, and glassblowers. In 2016, Srouji founded Hollow Forms, a glassblowing initiative in collaboration with the Twam family in Jaba', Palestine, aiming to revitalize traditional glassblowing techniques. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the Corning Museum of Glass in New York, the Sharjah Art Biennial, the Islamic Art Biennial in Jeddah, and the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati. Her pieces are part of permanent collections at institutions such as the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and the Victoria & Albert Museum. Srouji has contributed to academic discourse through her writings in publications like The Architectural Review and The Avery Review. She currently leads the MA City Design studio at the Royal College of Art in London, focusing on archaeological sites in Palestine as contexts for urban analysis. In recognition of her contributions to art and architecture, Srouji was awarded the Jameel Fellowship at the Victoria & Albert Museum for 2022-2023. Annemieke Bosman praat met Amanda Pinatih, zij is curator Vormgeving voor het Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam waar nu de tentoonstelling Oltre Terra is te zien. Het Stedelijk presenteert de tentoonstelling Oltre Terra, een onderzoeksproject van designstudio Formafantasma over de geschiedenis, ecologie en wereldwijde impact van wolproductie. Mensen hebben de evolutie van schapen sterk beïnvloed, maar schapen hebben ook bijgedragen aan de menselijke geschiedenis. Oltre Terra brengt materialen, objecten en ambachten samen tot een multidisciplinaire kijkervaring. De Italiaanse titel van de tentoonstelling, Oltre Terra, komt voort uit de etymologie van het Engelse woord "transhumance", een term die het Latijnse trans (over, "oltre" in het Italiaans) en humus (grond, "terra" in het Italiaans) combineert. Transhumance beschrijft de seizoensgebonden beweging van vee tussen grasgebieden. Op eenzelfde manier is de tentoonstelling ontwikkeld vanuit een trans disciplinaire benadering, in samenwerking met ontwerpers, kunstenaars, antropologen, evolutiebiologen, juristen, curatoren, herders en boeren. Mensen hebben schapen gedomesticeerd, maar schapen hebben op hun beurt de menselijke geschiedenis beïnvloed door wol te leveren. Voortdurend verschuift de grens tussen de temmer en de getemde. De tentoonstelling onderzoekt de complexe relatie tussen mensen en schapen en kijkt naar de economische en ethische gevolgen van het verkrijgen van materialen van levende wezens.

Working primarily in sculpture and installation, her work operates as large-scale realms built in relation to bodies of research which concern archaeology and the natural environments objects are excavated from. Her material explorations weave in oral histories, inherited nostalgia and the details of language to question the rigidity of Empire, the power of hierarchy and the static presence of history. Clay vessels, gypsum forms and steel armatures punctuate the labyrinth-like spaces Alrai creates, mimicking museum dioramas and romanticised visions of the past.Amanda Pinatih is an art historian, curator and PhD candidate. As Design Curator at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, she brings new perspectives to the museum's vast design collection. Her experimental working method is driven by an interest in developing new formats for knowledge transfer, while her exhibitions and projects explore the intersections of social, political, (de)colonial, environmental and economic issues. Simultaneously as a PhD candidate at the VU Amsterdam, Pinatih is researching the affordances of Indonesian objects around social and political contestations of belonging for diasporic communities with roots in the Indonesian archipelago, both in the museum, at home and in artistic practice. Scott is the author of Professional Photography: The New Global Landscape Explained (Routledge 2014), The Essential Student Guide to Professional Photography (Routledge 2015), New Ways of Seeing: The Democratic Language of Photography (Routledge 2019), and What Does Photography Mean To You? Elspeth Diederix is fotograaf. Na haar opleiding in de richting schilderen en sculptuur aan de Rietveld en de Rijksacademie koos ze uiteindelijk voor de fotografie. Haar werk werd getoond in onder meer het Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, en ze won eerder de Prix de Rome en kunstprijs De Scheffer. In Kasteel Wijlre is nu haar expositie ‘Angelica fields' te zien, een installatie waarin details van planten, grassen en kruiden worden gecombineerd met fotografisch werk. Femke van der Laan gaat met Elspeth Diederix in gesprek.
Vanaf 29 juni opent de tentoonstelling 'Christendom en Slavernij' in Museum Catharijneconvent in Utrecht. Vincent van Velsen is curator van de tentoonstelling die gaat over de vaak onbesproken relatie tussen het christendom en het Nederlandse slavernijverleden. Van Velsen werkte eerder voor instellingen als SMBA, Framer Framed en Kunsthuis SYB. Ook is hij conservator fotografie in het Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. Presentatie: Andrew Makkinga
Iris Kensmil is beeldend kunstenaar. Haar werk werd opgenomen in collecties van onder meer het Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam en het Kunstmuseum Den Haag. In 2019 representeerde ze Nederland op de Biënnale van Venetië. Haar werk verbeeldt vaak de kracht van zwarte mensen vanuit een feministisch perspectief. De solo-expositie ‘On the Inside' in galerie Madé van Krimpen toont nu een reeks portretten van haar hand. Het zijn intieme portretten in huiselijke setting, die een gevoel van verbinding oproepen. Julie Blussé gaat met Iris Kensmil in gesprek.
Ansuya Blom is kunstenaar, ze maakt schilderijen, tekeningen, beeldhouwwerken en films. Haar werk was onder meer te zien in Museum Fodor in Amsterdam, het Centraal Museum in Utrecht, het Haags Gemeentemuseum en het Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. Haar films werden vertoond in het MOMA in New York en op het International Film Festival Rotterdam. Haar nieuwste expositie zal te zien zijn in landhuis Oud Amelisweerd. Jonas Staal is beeldend kunstenaar. In zijn oeuvre vormt politiek een rode draad. Zo is hij oprichter van artistieke en politieke organisatie New World Summit en initieerde hij samen met advocaat Jan Fermon de rechtszaak Collectivize Facebook. Zijn werk werd tentoongesteld in onder meer het Centraal Museum (Utrecht) het Van Abbemuseum (Eindhoven) en het Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam). David Bade is beeldend kunstenaar. Hij won de Prix de Rome in 1993 en zijn werk was onder meer in 1995 te zien op de Biënnale van Venetië, en op tentoonstellingen in het Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, De Hallen Haarlem en het Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. Nu keert hij terug naar Heerlen, de stad waaraan hij zich levenslang verbond. De tentoonstelling Levenslang: 10 jaar David Bade in Heerlen geeft een inkijkje in de meer dan 100 werken die Bade maakte van, en dankzij, de inwoners van Heerlen. Anna Bjerger is a Swedish visual artist working primarily with figurative painting. Her work draws its inspiration largely from found images, namely photographs featured in out-of-print books, vintage magazines and travel brochures. Since training at the Royal College of Art London, Anna spent the last two decades building a strong international profile and her work has been subsequently acquired by the permanent collections of the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Moderna Museet Stockholm and Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, amongst many others.
