Legendary singer & 2x-Grammy winner Gloria Gaynor graces the program today regarding her upcoming full-length documentary "I Will Survive--A Journey of Faith, Hope, and a Magnificent Second Act," in theatres one day only (Tuesday February 13). The documentary covers much ground, from Gloria's early days in music prior to becoming a global name, the tragedies and triumphs in her life (both personally and professionally), the making of the "Testimony" album, and how her faith in the Lord has changed her life. We also touch on topics ranging from fashion to family :). On a fun note, the documentary is full of vintage photos and video clips, one of which is a brief chat of Gloria being interviewed by Dick Clark (of American Bandstand fame) who at one time was a DJ on WFIL! Find out more at www.gloriagaynor.com! We cap off the show with the final appearance of our longtime compadre Doug Schaub on "Now THAT's Punny" who is (mostly) retiring after a 44-year run in Philadelphia radio! We hope he will rejoin the pun segment as a guest in future episodes and wish him al the best! P.S. The Pre-Born partnership number settled in at 455 ultrasounds, meaning the goal was achieved (glory to God!) and exceeded by 5 :)! Thank you to all who prayed and contributed! He also wrote songs for The Supremes and Donna Summer. Davis is also best known for his 5-year run as Reverend Rueben Gregory on the popular NBC television series “Amen”, which continues in reruns on cable TV. His earlier series "That's My Mama", served to established him as a widely known actor and television star. Raised on Long Island, he began his career in New York City in the Broadway show HELLO DOLLY. Six years and five Broadway shows later (and 9 so far!), Davis headed to Hollywood and the rest is history.  Most recently, Davis appeared in the recurring role of “Ephraim Ware”, Director of National Intelligence on the CBS hit show "Madam Secretary". Davis recently completed a 4-year run on Broadway having originated the role of Sultan, in the hit Disney musical, ALADDIN and starring as Dr. Dillamond in WICKED on both Broadway and the National Tour.Davis holds a BA in Theology from Oakwood University and a Master of Divinity degree from Andrews University.  Mr. Davis is also the recipient of honorary Doctor of Letters degrees from Lincoln University, Paine College and Edward Waters College, a Doctor of Ministry from Trinity International University and just received a Doctor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Hartford. It Ain't Necessarily So". --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/radioflowok/message

It's a gorgeous fall day in the ATL and Party Favorz is dropping volume 5 of our next installment in the Thank God It's Disco series where classic Disco tracks from the 70's and 80's get a modern-day makeover. Most songs don't stray too far from the originals while others only use  the verses with the familiar beat and in one instance two classic Disco tracks get mashed-up into into one. Take note that the Gloria Gaynor 'Never Can Say Goodbye" remix by Jet Boot Jack is Gloria but he used a resung version by Miss Gaynor as opposed to the original so the vocals may sound a bit different but still glorious. That was not the case for "I Will Survive," which frankly has had a multitude of great remixes and the Anthony Fennel remix stays true to the original while giving it a modern House makeover. The same can be said about 'Let's All Chant' by the Michael Zager Band where Block & Crown used all the stems from the original but dropped the uh-ah, uh ah that made this song fun to begin with. Still, all the elements are there and it shouldn't take away from your enjoyment. Next week will be a diversionary week as we take on a Legacy set and update it because this guy has exploded since the original release, which has consistently remained in our top two searches for Party Favorz. The other is a diva who needs no introduction and frankly not even a new induction because after listening to the original release — it's just as smoking now as it was 10 years ago. Nevertheless, there are some modern remixes that have come out since and I haven't quite decided how I'm going to handle it yet but it's bound to please a lot of fans out there. Until the next time...ENJOY! Album: Thank God It's Disco Vol. 5 Artists: Various Genre: Disco Length: 03:17:59 1. The Three Degrees - Givin' Up, Givin' In (Mr. Root Extended Disco Remix) 2. Born and raised in Southside Jamaica Queens the artist Nikko Tesla experienced very humble beginnings even though his musical lineage would say otherwise. The Nephew of disco legend Gloria Gaynor who sang such hits as “I Will Survive” and “Never Can Say Goodbye” and the Son of Sondra Simon who sang back up for Gloria and was the lead singer of Simon Said, Nikko didn’t have to travel far to fall in love with music or get a music lesson. Nikko’s love of music was instant watching his family sing while he learned to play various instruments, but his love of hip hop came from his favorite emcee “Nas”. Nas’ influence on Nikko was dramatic. Before long Nikko would start writing his own story and rhymes , his mother Sondra then began to give him song-writing lessons with homework that needed to be completed to move on to something new. After perfecting his craft the accolades started to pour in Nikko won BU magazine’s unsigned artist of the month, Industry Muscle’s Unsigned Artist of the month, Has been featured in Talent Only Magazine twice, Has worked with the likes of Iz Dofat, The Wonder Twinz, Maximum Pressure, Dj’s And Mc’s, Dj Smooth Denali, is a 4x VMA Nominee and 2x Winner for best “Live Freestyle” and best “Freestyle on wax”, just to name a few. He has released Numerous mixtapes from “Cold NY Morning”, to the “The Black August LP”. His latest upcoming project “Black Hill Ave” has garnered serious attention from the indie scene. https://open.spotify.com/artist/05fptEeIJxjAls8FMOXdIK

So, whether you were a club-goer during the 80s or are discovering these tracks for the first time, this mix is sure to captivate. Rosie and Helen are joined by the absolutely wonderful Reverend Richard Coles. Richard is a Church of England priest in the quintessentially English village of Finedon, Northamptonshire, where two of his ancestors were Vicars in the seventeenth century. However, in complete contrast, more than a quarter of a century ago Richard was the instrumentalist half of pop band The Communards, together with Jimmy Somerville. During the 1980s The Communards had three UK Top 10 hits, including Never Can Say Goodbye and the biggest-selling single of 1986, Don’t Leave Me This Way. Reverend Richard Coles is co-presenter of BBC Radio 4’s Saturday Live and is regularly seen as a guest panelist on shows such as Would I Lie To You?, Have I Got News For You and QI. Often described as Britain’s most famous vicar, Richard was the inspiration for the main character in the BBC hit comedy Rev, a programme for which he also served as consultant. So get ready for one hell (heaven?) of an episode...It takes a certain type of person to work in showbiz, and often it was clear from the start that they were destined to end up on stage. Daddy Look At Me takes the time to explore these scenarios with a guest every week.Helen Bauer and Rosie Jones will probe the guest on the pivotal moments in their early life; from childhood, to romance, and everywhere in between, we want the highs and lows that make it so obvious that this craving for attention ensured our guest was a born entertainer. You can follow our Instagram and like us on Facebook! And you can follow Rosie and Helen on Twitter! This is a Studio71 production. May 24, 2019 - The episode starts with a tribute to a loved one. Charcoal doesn't need help from the meat and North Carolina one-ups Alabama in the worst way. The “front-runner” and the defensive “GOAT” lead the charge as Zion dodges a bullet. A double-dose of 34 turns into a petty clash of titans, and an NFL CB breaks Sham's heart.

There are many accounts about the rise of Disco bubbling up from as late as the 60's. Frankly, I won't go back that far because it really wasn't on people's radar until around 1973-74. Many soul artists were picking up on the faster rhythmic beats and had massive success with songs like "Armed and Extremely Dangerous" by First Choice, "The Love I Lost" by Harold Melvin & the Bluenotes, "You're The First, the Last, My Everything" by Barry White, "Doctor's Orders" by Carol Douglas, "Get Dancin'" by Disco Tex and the Sex-O-Lettes, "Rock Your Baby" by George McCrae, "Never Can Say Goodbye" by Gloria Gaynor, "Rock the Boat" by The Hues Corporation, and many more. By 1975-76, the disco sound moved from the underground clubs and minor radio hits to mainstream radio and number one hits like "Can't Get Enough of Your Love, Babe" by Barry White, "The Hustle" by Van McCoy & The Soul City Orchestra, "Love To Love You, Baby" by Donna Summer, "Movin'" by Brass Construction, "Brazil" by The Ritchie Family, "You Sexy Thing" by Hot Chocolate, "Play That Funky Music" by Wild Cherry, and even "Fame" by David Bowie. By 1977, all bets were off and Disco had made the final leap from the underground to mainstream domination and it only got more popular from there for the rest of the 70's into the early 80's before the backlash began. The first 12" extended play single goes to "Love To Love You, Baby" by Donna Summer. After Giorgio Moroder had played the single at a party, people began requesting it over and over. He soon came to the notion of creating a much longer version that people could enjoy in the clubs, which gave birth to 15 minutes of orgasmic perfection with Donna's sultry vocals. Technically, there were other earlier long plays but this track is wildly credited for making them more mainstream. If you lived in New York, Studio 54 was the place to be for anybody that was somebody. All the "A" list stars showed up to see and be seen. Grace Jones, Cher, Debbie Harry and many more were regular fixtures at the club. For those that couldn't get into 54, Paradise Garage and The Loft were the go-to spots for the anything-goes openly gay experience and played many notable underground tracks that never made it to radio. This era of the late 70's and early 80's is notable for its excesses. Drugs, open sex, and basically an anything-goes attitude, gave way to the AIDS epidemic of the early 80's. You cannot exactly discount the connection between the two. Nevertheless, it was a time of carefree expression when people wanted to escape the realities of high inflation, high gas prices, and a staggering economy of the post-Nixon-Watergate era. I've often dreamt about growing up during this period but even I admit to my own personal excesses during the 80's and 90's and would likely be dead today had I grown up during the disco revolution. Regardless, you just can't escape the amazing music that came out of this period, which is the basis for everything that has succeeded it. Whether it was House Music, NRG, Techno, Trance, and on down the line, Disco and all its glorious variants are what started it all and is the main reason it's so heavily sampled in today's music. For all its lack of social values and hedonistic tendencies, I adore Disco. While I am a massive fan of ALL music for my many moods, Disco is the only one I always gravitate towards when I need a pick-me-up. It's like a good friend that I can always rely on to make me happy. I hope everyone is enjoying these sets as much as I am putting them all together for you. I've already got volume 6 in the can and then need to start working on the fast beats, which will likely be the final set. Since I'm running behind in my schedule, I'll likely drop the next volume on Friday. Until then...ENJOY! In the early days, these songs were crafted by live musicians, resulting in intricate beats that may sound mismatched. Thanks to modern technology, we've aligned the beats for smooth DJ transitions, but the original recordings often had timing issues. To correct this, we've employed automated beat correction, creating what I like to call "dirty beats" reminiscent of the '90s garage sound. One standout track, "Hit 'N Run Lover" by Carol Jiana, required extensive adjustments due to misaligned drums and percussion. Despite the challenges, we've included it to honor its importance in Disco history. Relive the glory days of old school disco with timeless classics like Sister Sledge's "Lost In Music" and Karen Young's "Hot Shot," Get down to Linda Clifford's "If My Friends Could See Me Now" and CJ & Co.'s "Devil's Gun." His later recordings influenced several contemporary R&B subgenres, such as quiet storm and neo soul. Following a period in Europe as a tax exile in the early 1980s, he released the 1982 Grammy Award-winning hit "Sexual Healing" and its parent album Midnight Love. 58.    Aretha Louise Franklin: American singer and songwriter. Franklin began her career as a child singing gospel at New Bethel Baptist Church in Detroit, where her father, C. L. Franklin, was minister. In 1960, at the age of 18, she embarked on a secular career. 59.    In 1967, Franklin achieved commercial acclaim and success with songs such as "Respect", "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman", "Spanish Harlem" and "Think". 60.    By the end of the 1960s decade she had gained the title "The Queen of Soul".  61.    Franklin eventually became the most charted female artist in the history. 62.    Franklin has won a total of 18 Grammy Awards and is one of the best-selling musical artists of all time, having sold over 75 million records worldwide. Franklin has been honored throughout her career including a 1987 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, in which she became the first female performer to be inducted. She was inducted to the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005. In August 2012, Franklin was inducted into the GMA Gospel Music Hall of Fame. Franklin is listed in at least two all-time lists on Rolling Stone magazine, including the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time; and the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time. African-American Cinema 63.    Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song is a 1971 American independent action thriller film written, co-produced, scored, edited, directed by and starring Melvin Van Peebles. His son Mario Van Peebles also appears in a small role, playing the title character as a young boy. It tells the picaresque story of a poor black man on his flight from the white authority. 64.    Van Peebles began to develop the film after being offered a three-picture contract for Columbia Pictures. No studio would finance the film, so Van Peebles funded the film himself, shooting it independently over a period of 19 days, performing all of his own stunts and appearing in several sex scenes, reportedly unsimulated. He received a $50,000 loan from Bill Cosby to complete the project. The film's fast-paced montages and jump-cuts were unique features in American cinema at the time. The picture was censored in some markets and received mixed critical reviews. However, it has left a lasting impression on African-American cinema. 65.    The musical score of Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song was performed by Earth, Wind & Fire. Van Peebles did not have any money for traditional advertising methods, so he released the soundtrack album prior to the film's release to generate publicity. Huey P. Newton celebrated and welcomed the film's revolutionary implications, and Sweetback became required viewing for members of the Black Panther Party. According to Variety, it demonstrated to Hollywood that films which portrayed "militant" blacks could be highly profitable, leading to the creation of the blaxploitation genre, although critic Roger Ebert did not consider this example of Van Peebles' work to be an exploitation film. 66.    Release date: April 23, 1971 / Budget: $150k (~920k today) / Gross: $4.1m (~25m today) 67.    Shaft is a 1971 American blaxploitation action-crime film directed by Gordon Parks and written by Ernest Tidyman and John D. F. Black. The film revolves around a private detective named John Shaft who is hired by a Harlem mobster to rescue his daughter from the Italian mobsters who kidnapped her. The film stars Richard Roundtree as John Shaft, Moses Gunn as Bumpy Jonas, Charles Cioffi as Vic Androzzi, and Christopher St. John as Ben Buford. The major themes present in Shaft are the Black Power movement, race, masculinity, and sexuality. It was filmed within the New York City borough of Manhattan, specifically in Harlem, Greenwich Village, and Times Square. 68.    Shaft was one of the first blaxploitation films, and one of the most popular, which "marked a turning point for this type of film and spawned a number of sequels and knockoffs." The Shaft soundtrack album, recorded by Isaac Hayes, was also a success, winning a Grammy Award for Best Score Soundtrack Album for a Motion Picture; and a second Grammy that he shared with Johnny Allen for Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement; Grammy Award for Best Original Score; the "Theme from Shaft" won the Academy Award for Best Original Song and has appeared on multiple Top 100 lists, including AFI's 100 Years...100 Songs. Widely considered a prime example of the blaxploitation genre. Shaft was selected in 2000 for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." 69.    Release date: July 2, 1971 / Budget: 500k (~3m today) / Gross: $13m (~80m today) 70.    The film was one of only three profitable movies that year for MGM,  71.    It not only spawned several years of "blaxploitation" action films, it earned enough money to save then-struggling MGM from bankruptcy Television: 72.    Soul Train is an American music-dance television program which aired in syndication from October 2, 1971 to March 27, 2006. In its 35-year history, the show primarily featured performances by R&B, soul, dance/pop and hip-hop artists, although funk, jazz, disco and gospel artists also appeared. The series was created by Don Cornelius, who also served as its first host and executive producer. 73.    Some commentators have called Soul Train a "black American Bandstand," 74.    Cornelius acknowledged Bandstand as a model for his program, but he tended to bristle at the Bandstand comparisons. 75.    Cornelius, with help from Jesse Jackson, openly accused Dick Clark of trying to undermine TV's only Black-owned show, when Clark launched "Soul Unlimited". 76.    Cornelius was relatively conservative in his musical tastes and was admittedly not a fan of the emerging hip hop genre, believing that the genre did not reflect positively on African-American culture (one of his stated goals for the series). 77.    Rosie Perez testified in the 2010 VH1 documentary Soul Train: The Hippest Trip in America that Cornelius also disliked seeing the show's dancers perform sexually suggestive "East Coast" dance moves. 78.     This disconnect (which was openly mocked in an In-Living Color sketch where Cornelius and the show were lampooned as extremely old and out of touch) eventually led to Cornelius's stepping down as host in the early 1990s and the show's losing its influence. Welcome back, don't call it a comeback, to the live music podcast episode 68.  It has been quite some time since the last show and without going into too many details it was a break that was needed but it is good to be back.  After such a long time is was going to take a very special concert to get me going again and I think that is what I have in store for you on this show. The music I will be featuring is the first tribute concert to be featured on the livemusicpodcast and it will be a tough one to follow up on for any others.  I heard about a Michael Jackson tribute concert in April from a friend of mine and without knowing any of the bands involved thought it was a safe enough bet for a good time.  I didn't have a lot to be worried about since there was plenty of buzz going around about the potential that this show would have given the collection of talented Kansas City musicians involved.  The main group organizing it was the experimental world-jazz band Diverse but rotating in throughout the night was an eclectic group of musicians from various backgrounds.  Its hard to truly appreciate the difficulty of pulling off a great MJ tribute show without descending into bad karaoke.  You really get the sense of the singing talent that MJ possessed when you see how many different singers it really takes to match his vocal range and also the number of instruments on stage to create the full sound that a lot of his songs require.  Seeing it firsthand these musicians from Kansas City were able to pull it off that night and I'm guessing MJ would have been very pleased.  The release of this episode marks the 2 year anniversary of his passing so hopefully he would be pleased by my humble tribute to the king of pop as well.  Please enjoy.
