Steph describes what exactly perinatal or postpartum mood disorders are and how and when they can present. She sheds light on the vast spectrum that these disorders can range. The other thing to keep in mind about these disorders is that fathers can also have similar experiences and should realize that so that they can seek the help they need to navigate these uncharted waters. Men typically present much differently than women when experience a postpartum mood disorder. Steph also gives detailed explanations of the different types of disorders and what they look like and she also suggests listeners to ask themselves if they are experiencing any of the symptoms that come along with perinatal or postpartum mood disorders. To help prepare yourself for the 3rd trimester and postpartum, Steph and Caitlin share a variety of ideas and tips to help expecting mothers. Including meal prep ideas, tasks that new mothers greatly appreciate and additional tips. The podcast wraps up with the dream team for the postpartum period, which most women who have never delivered a child would expect. The key player on this team is a provider that will genuinely listen to you and your concerns. There are a lot of things that can pop up and having a provider that truly listens to you will help alleviate unnecessary worry. A 2019 study revealed many pregnant women today do not meet the recommended intakes for nutrients like: Magnesium Vitamin D Vitamin E Iron Vitamin A Which is scary given that inadequate nutrition can negatively impact baby's development, mom's health AND how mom feels (physically & emotionally) in her postpartum period. This is exactly why I invited one of my favorite experts in the wellness world, the Whole30's dietician, Stephanie Greunke, on the show to teach us all how to not only survive pregnancy and the postpartum period - but to THRIVE through it. Here are some of the topics we dive into... The most important nutrients for pregnancy Medications that can deplete moms How to prevent morning sickness (and why it happens!) The link between nutrient deficiency, pregnancy, and mental health issues Common nutrient deficiencies in paleo dieters Her 3 favorite nutrient tests Important foods for the first trimester Foods to focus on for the second trimester How many carbs do you really need for a healthy pregnancy? The most important food for the third trimester 2 strategies for a healthy, happy postpartum period The 3 key ingredients for a simple, healthy meal How to lose the baby weight gracefully How much weight to lose per week for sustainable weight loss Her 6 favorite supplements to replete nutrient stores The best forms of magnesium for digestion, brain health, and relaxation The one food you'll want to focus on before pregnancy My favorite new-momma beauty product And so much more! The second Virtual Campfire during our Take A Hike, Diabetes campaign is all about diabetes, Whole30 and healing in nature. If you're new to exploring the mind-body connection, the concept of intuitive eating can be a bit “woo woo” if you haven't done the work to unpack diet culture and unlearn what we've been taught about how to nourish our bodies. If you're interested in intuitive eating but aren't sure how or where to start, Whole30 is a wonderful program with a bit of structure to help you do a nutritional reset and understand which foods feel good to you. I don't see this program as a diet, nor do I see it as restrictive. This program feels abundant, empowering, and can help you take control of your diabetes management plan. By focusing on eating whole foods and taking a break from sugar, alcohol, and processed foods, you can really get in tune with what foods make you feel good and see the results every day as you test your blood glucose levels. This week, we're excited to welcome Stephanie Greunke, RD and Melissa Urban. ABOUT OUR GUESTS Stephanie Greunke is Whole30's in-house Dietitian and Education Manager. She specializes in prenatal and postnatal nutrition, behavioral psychology, and holds additional certifications in perinatal mental health and fitness. Stephanie recognizes the importance of metabolic health for all individuals, centering it as a key component in her practice. Over the last 10 years, she has helped her personal clients and the Whole30 community tailor their nutrition to support a healthy blood sugar response, which ultimately improves their mental health, energy, and vitality. Melissa Urban is the co-founder and CEO of the Whole30 program, and a six-time New York Times bestselling author. She has been featured by Dr. Oz, Good Morning America, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, People, and Forbes; and ranks #19 on Greatists Top 100 Most Influential People in Health and Fitness. Melissa is the host of the Do the Thing podcast, and is a prominent keynote speaker on social media and branding, health trends, and entrepreneurship. She lives in Salt Lake City, UT. IN THIS EPISODE: What is Whole30 and why is it good for folks living with diabetes? What happens in our bodies when we nourish ourselves in this way? Why is a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) a good resource for people with diabetes? Why does Melissa like hiking so much? What happened when she was hiking in Norway?
