Tongue ties are such a vast, controversial, and often misunderstood topic that we brought in pediatric otolaryngologist (ENT) surgeon Dr. Elise Graham to help us wade through the topic. She is also a mom to two boys with a complex breastfeeding journey of her own, which has brought her to shine a postpartum lens onto her field which she admits can gain from providing more support to patients, especially as information about tongue ties can vary greatly and specialized support can be hard to find. In addition to being a pediatric surgeon, Dr. Graham is also a certified lactation consultant (IBCLC) and earning a fellowship through the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine, which is why we're very excited to have her guide us through the evidence-based truth about tongue ties. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: [Feedback please] New User's Guide to LessWrong, published by Ruby on April 25, 2023 on LessWrong. The LessWrong team is currently thinking a lot about what happens with new users: both the bar of their contributions being accepted, how we deliver feedback and restriction of not good contributions, but also most importantly, how we get them onboarded onto the site This is a draft of a document we'd present to new users to help them understand what LessWrong is about. I'm interested in early community feedback about whether I'm hitting the right notes here before investing a lot more in it. This document also references another post that's something of more of a list of norms, akin to Basics of Rationalist Discourse, though (1) I haven't written that yet, (2) I'm much less certain about the shape or nature of it. I'll share a post or draft about that too soon. This document is aimed at new users but may also be a useful reference for established users. It elaborates on the about page. The Core of LessWrong: Rationality LessWrong is an online forum and community that was built around the goal improving human reasoning and decision-making. The community believes there are ways of thinking, that if you figure them out and adopt them, you can become a person who systematically arrives at true beliefs and good decisions more of the time than someone who didn't adopt those ways of thinking. Around here, the short word for "systematically arriving at truth, etc." is rationality, and that's at the core of this site. More than that, LessWrong community shares a culture that encodes a bunch of built up beliefs, opinions, concepts, and values about how to reason better. These give LessWrong a pretty distinctive style from the rest of Internet. Some of the features that set LessWrong apart: We treat beliefs as being about shaping your anticipations of what you'll observe The goal of our conversations is to figure out what's true, not win arguments people focus on what would change their mind it's common to acknowledge when their someone they are debating has made a convincing point, or has even outright convinced them entirely We are very Bayesian Rather than treating belief as binary, we use probabilistic credences to express our certainty/uncertainty. Rather than say that is "extremely unlikely", we'd say "I think there's a 1% chance or lower of it happening". We are interested in Bayesian evidence for a hypothesis, i.e. anything that seems more likely if the belief is true rather than false. Philosophical Heritage: The Sequences Between 2006 and 2009, Eliezer Yudkowsky spent two years writing a sequence of blog posts that shared his philosophy/beliefs/models about rationality (collectively those blog posts are called The Sequences). In 2009, Eliezer founded LessWrong as a community forum for the people who were attracted to his ideas and worldview. While not everyone on the site agrees with everything Eliezer says, The Sequences (also known as Rationality: AI to Zombies) is the foundational cultural/values document of LessWrong. To understand LessWrong and participate well (and also for your own reasoning ability), we strongly encourage you to read the Sequences. The original sequences were ~700 blog posts. Rationality: A-Z was an edited and distilled version compiled in 2015 of ~400 posts. Highlights from the Sequences is 50 top posts from the Sequences suggested a quick place to start Topics other than Rationality The eleventh virtue is scholarship. Though they were often referred to as ‘parablocks', but in fact they were called ‘parablacks'. The reason was that the inventor was called Gunther Schwartz. They were partly to stop skiers crossing 'the sharp ends' but they were widely used in World Cup speed events because they had the effect of dampening the ski and filtering out vibration. Marker developed their own version which had a weight suspended by springs, it was intended as a more active 'suspension' for ski racers, though the thing weighed a ton. The earliest ones were simply plastic boxes but the last version was a spring loaded coat hanger wire affair which stopped your tips crossing but folded flat if you tried to uncross them”   BobinCH (snowheads): "Gethin on Solden in October [Episode 159] was an interesting listen" Richard_Sideways (snowheads): "Nice podcast as usual" Elements.biz: "Super interesting conversations [in Episode 160]. Episode 01:  HighlightsHuman sleep has been separated into two main types: Non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep and rapid eye movement (REM) sleepNREM sleep is further divided into four stages, with each stage increasing in their depth of sleepREM sleep is named this way because of the bizarre, horizontal, shuttling eye movements that occur underneath your eyelids during this stage of sleepREM sleep is the principal stage in which we dream, although it can occur in the other stages as wellNREM and REM sleep play out in a battle for brain domination throughout the nightThis cerebral war is going to be won and lost every 90 minutes, creating the standard cycling architecture of sleep for humansOther species may have a slightly different NREM to REM cycles, with birds experiencing a cycle that only lasts about 4-5 minutes, and giraffes about 24 minutesDuring NREM sleep, we see bursts of deeply powerful brain waves that flow over your cortexWe also see sleep spindles, which are short, synchronous bursts of electrical brain wave activity that last for about 1-1.5 secondsAbout 60-70 minutes into your first sleep cycle, your brain starts to rise up again into later stages of NREM sleep, then pop into a short REM sleep period, back to NREM sleep, then returning to REM sleep once againYour brain goes through this cycle every 90 minutesWhat changes is the ratio of NREM to REM sleep as you move through the night, with your sleep cycle comprised of more REM sleep during the second half of the nightIf you wake up two hours earlier than usual, you aren't just losing 2 hours of sleep - you could be losing 50, 60, or even 70% of your REM sleepAll stages of sleep are critical and perform different functions for the brain and body at different times of nightEpisode Sponsor:This episode is sponsored by Athletic Greens, who are providing a discount and free product if you use the link above. Feedback is one of the most important things I have received in the development of my career and in the development of myself. Many organisations caveat committing to giving you feedback by saying that because of the volume of people that have applied they won't be able to give every single applicant feedback, which is fair enough. But I draw the line at 2nd and 3rd stage interviews and a test. At the point in which you are committing time and effort to do a test, it's professional courtesy to receive feedback, constructive feedback even more so if you have been unsuccessful based on a test. I share with you my experiences and the importance of constructive feedback and how this should be used as part of your career development.PS: I will be answering x2 dilemmas in this episode.Email me: hello@toyatalks.com Twitter: @toya_w (#ToyaTalks) Snapchat: @toyawashington Instagram: @toya_washington & @toya_talks www.toyatalks.com

"One of the things that I hear from clients and potential clients and podcasting community members is that a lot of people really don't like the sound of their own voice." ~Andrea Klunder, episode 081. Lately I've honestly been feeling a little bit apathetic. I've had a hard time connecting with things that I love, things that inspire me, things that energize me, things that bring me joy. And so I am genuinely happy (finally) to be exploring this series with you and I'm curious: How do you feel about your own voice? Is it a tool that you feel like you have command over? Is it something that feels vulnerable? Do you enjoy speaking or presenting? Does it make you feel nervous?  Do you never really think about your voice? It's just a thing that comes out of you when you need to use it? What questions do you have about voice?  Would you like to learn about ways that you can become more comfortable or more skillful with using your voice? One of the things that I hear from clients and potential clients and podcasting community members is that a lot of people really don't like the sound of their own voice, or they don't feel confident using their voice, or they worry that their voice just isn't compelling enough. Why are we in a position where so many people feel vulnerable and uncomfortable with using  one of the most powerful tools that you have for connection for influence for sharing experiences and for making an impact?  Email me your thoughts, questions, fears, desires around voice: Andrea [at] thecreativeimpostor.com.  This can be written out in text or you can record a voice memo on your phone or fancy microphone and send me the recording I can play on the show.   Get the full show notes at http://www.thecreativeimpostor.com/081   Connect with me! In the coming weeks I will share ideas to help dads fulfill the remaining mandates 5.  A father must be the encourager of the family. 6.  A father must guard his tongue and his tone and learn to measure his response against the excitement on their faces. 7.  A father must routinely embrace his children. 8.  A father must build the trusting relationship on God’s Word, not on human wisdom. The Fathers Mandate Part 3 of 8 From Growing Kids God's Way Scroll down to the reference for Chapter 4 3.  A father must understand and respect his child’s private world. Public World - What people see and hear when you are out and about in a public setting. The things that can be seen by strangers on the street. Personal World - The world where your closest friends and family commonly see and hear things you that are never shown in public. Private World - This is on the inside. People have to be invited in to see what is in here. Open window phenomenon - Its when your child invites you into their private world. It can come when walking or at bedtime. Be careful because you never know when the open window will come. I have already covered the following: 1.  A father must cultivate a sense of family identity. Riley’s birthday trip 2.  A father must regularly demonstrate love to his wife. In the coming weeks I will share ideas to help dads fulfill the remaining mandates 4.  A father must give his children the freedom to fail. 5.  A father must be the encourager of the family. 6.  A father must guard his tongue and his tone and learn to measure his response against the excitement on their faces. 7.  A father must routinely embrace his children. 8.  A father must build the trusting relationship on God’s Word, not on human wisdom. The Fathers Mandate Part 2 of 8 Based on Chapter 4 from Growing Kids God's Way  1.  A father must cultivate a sense of family identity. (Review) - Be proud of your family - as Mr Ezzo said be the cheer leader (We are the Osbornes and we...) Rise above the level of mediocrity! I added a couple of blog posts this week. One related to Cub Scout activities this past weekend. Our oldest two boys got to shoot BB Guns, Bow and Arrows, and Sling Shots. Make sure your activities are in line with your family goals and values. Do you have them written down? Are your goals Simple, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, TRUTH based? What education method makes your family unique: Public, private or home school? 2.  A father must regularly demonstrate love to his wife. Mr. Ezzo says, “If you really love your children then give them the gift of confidence and security. Show them how much you love their mom.” In Episode 4 I talked about the importance of Dating and Couch Time. In Episode 7 I talked about the need for dads to take your wife out of her role as a mom and put her back in her role as a wife. To do this you need to elarn your wife’s love language. The 5 Love Languages: The Secret to Love That Lasts by Gary Chapman  In the coming weeks I will share ideas to help dads fulfill the remaining mandates 3.  A father must understand and respect his child’s private world. 12 minutes 4. Part 1 of an 8 part series on how I implement the Fathers Mandate from chapter 4 of the Growing Kids God's Way (GKGW) parenting series by Gary and Anne Marie Ezzo. This episode provides a short click from GKGW session four where Mr. Ezzo introduces the first mandate. CNN Opinion article Why Men are in Trouble by William J Bennett "Today, 18-to- 34-year-old men spend more time playing video games a day than 12-to- 17-year-old boys." via Shawn Wood Courageous Movie opened Friday September 30th. This awesome movie is a great challenge for dayd, Courageous came in number one in the box office for new releases last weekend. Parenting and Relationships The Father’s Mandate - How I cultivate a sense of family identity. Special family activities Gingerbread train Other cooking activities like 4 year old biscuits Let them help you with tasks around the house even if it slows you down Create memories with special activities and trips (NC apple picking, family camping, fishing, geocaching) Be the spiritual leader by praying and leading devotionals with the family - As kids get older let them lead portions of the devotional time Take your child shopping or on errands Be proud of your family - as Mr Ezzo said be the cheer leader (We are the Osbornes and we...) Rise above the level of mediocrity! Holidays (we work very hard to tell our kids the truth. We do not lie about Santa, the tooth fairy, or the Easter bunny.) Read about how Halloween is different in our family. Tech Time Facebook Share “feature” My friend, we will call him John, shares a photo on his wall. He shared it via the “share” button from his friend Sue who shared it from her “Wall Photos” album. I am only friends with John and I am not friends with Sue on Facebook. BUT, now that my friend John has shared a photo from Sue, I can not click on that photo and then cycle through all of the Wall photos that Sue has ever shared....and get this...I can even comment on those photos. Sue does not know me and I do not know Sue but here I am leaving comments on Sue’s wall. The reverse is true. Based on the default settings in Facebook...Once you share a photo it can be shared by any one of your friends and their friends can then share it and so on and so forth. And all of the friends of all of the people who have shared the photo now have access to view and write comments on ALL of the photos in the album that contains the one photo that your friend shared.
