+ Nephew.....

Listen to the original versions of the songs that k.d. lang covered on this album! Barry compared the ominous-sounding outro of Don't Smoke In Bed to Goldfinger by Shirley Bassey. We played a bit of The Hollies' version (in Barry's eyes, the definitive version) of The Air That I Breathe. We discussed in depth the lyrics of Steve Miller Band's The Joker, eventually going on a tangent that led to Clap For the Wolfman by The Guess Who and The Letter by The Medallions. Abigail compared k.d. lang's vocal performance in Your Smoke Screen to Shana Cleveland's performance on Manzanita. Barry compared the song to Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd. AQUA. H2O. WATER. Sejrstimens våde liste rummer det hele, med: Feist, Future Islands, Empress Of, Enyal, Avril Lavigne, Level 42, Little Dragon, Mew, Joni Mitchell, MØ, Janelle Monae, Seal, Jane Siberry, Simple Minds, Sting, Sleep Token, David Sylvian, Tune-Yards, U2 + Tom Waits.

Der beviser endnu en liste af navne: Genesis, The Cure, Abba, Beatles, Split Enz, The Triffids, Kate Bush, Muse, Crash Test Dummies, Jane Siberry, Saga, The Tubes, Sparks, The Icicle Works, Shriekback, XTC og Sebastian, Gangway + Jens Unmack.

"Mercy Rising" The California born singer/songwriter Maia Sharp wrote her first song at 5, so it’s no surprise that over the years her compositions have been recorded by—and by the way this is going to be a murderers row of talent, so get ready—Bonnie Rait, Keb Mo, Cher, Art Garfunkel, Paul Carrack and Trisha Yearwood. More Maia Sharp resume items: and mind you, this is a partial list: she’s toured all over the U.S. and the UK, she’s appeared on NPR’s All Things Considered, CBS Early Morning and the Today Show, she’s an adjunct professor at NYU’s Summer Songwriter workshop and she’s been writing for Songwriting with Soldiers where active duty service members team up with songwriters who help them turn their stories into songs. Sharp has put out nearly ten solo albums and her newest is Mercy Rising. Filled with poeticism, wisdom, and observational grace, Mercy Rising is a moving collection that’s a perfect balance of elegance and intensity. In this conversation Maia talks about recovering from COVID, the power of Bonnie Raitt and what it was like to step into a songwriting castle with Jane Siberry and Jules Shear and get down to business. Peter Rukavina's Podcast

Back in mid-March I received an email from Matt Rainnie, personable host of CBC Mainstreet: would I be interested, he asked, in being the “Spin Time DJ” for the show on an upcoming Friday. Would I be interested? Of course I’d be interested. Had I not been dreaming of this very moment for years! “Spin Time DJ,” for those from away, is a regular Friday feature on the afternoon radio show where a guest is invited, in 22 short minutes, to relate their life story, punctuated by three meaningful songs. Here’s Ashley Belanger-Birt doing it. And Bill Schurman. And John Connolly. As a non-Islander of no particular note, I’d long ago given up hope that I’d one day be called up to the bigs. But dreams do come true. So plans were made to record this morning. And then the hard part. Summarize my life in three songs. Not easy, as it turns out. For a while there I had a strong plan to go completely Kobayashi Maru, and set aside popular music in favour of sounds of Japanese coffee shops and walks in the woods behind my childhood home. Is there not music in nature? But I pulled myself back from the edge, dug in deep, and came up with three songs I’m very happy with. Matt and I had a nice chat this morning, backed by the audio engineering prowess of David Rashed, and the segment will air Friday, April 9, 2021 after the 5:30 p.m. news. You can listen live on the radio if you’re near, on the web stream if you’re not, and the episode will be posted to the Mainstreet website on Monday. —— Postscript: Here are the three songs I choose: Jane Siberry and David Ramsden, The Love I Have for You (3:51), from the 1990 cassette “Quiet Please, There’s A Lady On Stage,” recorded live at the Cameron House in Toronto. Shawn Colvin, This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody) (4:01), from the album 1994 album “Cover Girl,” recorded live at the Bottom Line in NYC, August 1993. Karine Polwart, Labouring and Resting (3:14), from the 2017 album “A Pocket of Wind Resistance.”

Today we get a glimpse into the behind-the-scenes functions involved in set and tour production. Having worked with artists such as Joni Mitchell and k.d. Lang, we are fortunate to have John B. Webster, better known simply as John B, with us today. He is going to share a bit about how he managed to land such impressive gigs and his philosophy that keeps all doors open. He touches on the nitty-gritty of set design, including the creative process and the importance of keeping the type of venue in mind. Those on a tighter budget would be delighted by his brilliant tips for introducing striking design elements, all available from your local Home Depot. We further talk about the effects of lighting and color on stage and hash out the difference between a fogger and a hazer. Tune in to find out what else you can do to put up a spectacular show.   Key Points From This Episode: Friends can be valuable contacts. Never burn bridges in relationships. Set design starts with a meeting with the artist. 3D CAD programs can be used to sketch set designs. Design elements must fit different venues. Banners are user-friendly, convertible and inexpensive. Digital printing has made logo printing much cheaper. Use mylar foil and lights to create atmosphere. Colored lights work well on screen door mesh.  Make friends with the light guy at the venue. Uses hazers rather than foggers. Lighting and music must correspond. Identify your primary color lights and communicate it. Create a story with your music.   Links Mentioned in Today's Episode: Displays2Go — https://www.displays2go.com/ John B. Music Makers and Soul Shakers Podcast with Steve Dawson

Please go and listen to part one of this episode first to get the full story!  Kevin Breit is a humble Canadian treasure. And a hell of a unique guitar player. And a nice feller. I’ve known Kevin for about 20 years at this point, although I haven’t seen him much over the last 10, sadly. When I first got to know him, he was at the tail end of a run in Norah Jones’ live band, and had played on most of her recordings as well. He was bowing out of that gig to be able to spend some more time with his young family, but was already a seasoned vet in the studio, having played on records for folks like Rosanne Cash, k.d. Lang, Hugh Laurie, Cassandra Wilson, Holly Cole, Jane Siberry, Serena Ryder, Taj Mahal, Irma Thomas and countless others. As impressive as that list is, it was his quirkier solo records that I found most interesting. His guitar playing had a big influence on me, particularly his unusual voic eon slide guitar. His string of under-the-radar albums that he seemed to be churning out almost for his own amusement were some of the coolest music I knew of. From the slide guitar based “Empty” to the mandolin orchestra of “Maybelle” and the reckless abandon of “Folk Alarm”, not to mention the inventive “Supergenrous”, I loved all of it. Kevin is well known in his native Canada, but also well-respected internationally, as his session track record suggests. With multiple awards including a Maple Blues Award, Gemini Award, National Jazz Award, Canadian Folk Music Award and two Juno Awards for his recordings, as well as for his work on albums that have a collective 10 Grammy Awards, Breit’s unparalleled creativity is infinite. Music Makers and Soul Shakers Podcast with Steve Dawson

Breit’s latest release, the 11-track instrumental “Johnny Goldtooth and The Chevy Casanovas” features his interpretations of a mythical character in a twang world. From the first Canadian VJ (and Trent alumnus) Christopher Ward, Is This Live? captures the pure fun and rock ’n’ roll rebellion of the early years of MuchMusic television. Christopher Ward joins us by Skype to talk about his latest book. We talked to Ward last year in a wide ranging interview about his career as an award-winning songwriter, music journalist, and author. You can find that podcast here. But when we heard that he was working on a book about the early days of MuchMusic, we made him promise that he'd come back to talk to us about it.  He graciously agreed. From Penguin Random House:On August 31, 1984, the Nation’s Music Station launched, breaking ground as the Wild (Canadian) West of television—live, gloriously unpredictable, seat-of-the-pants TV, delivered fresh daily. The dream child of TV visionary Moses Znaimer, and John Martin, the maverick creator of The New Music, Much was live and largely improvised, and an entire generation of Canadians grew up watching the VJs and embraced the new music that became the video soundtrack of our lives. The careers of Canadian legends like Blue Rodeo, Corey Hart, Jane Siberry, Bryan Adams, Platinum Blonde, Glass Tiger, Colin James, the Parachute Club, Honeymoon Suite, Barenaked Ladies, Maestro Fresh Wes and Sloan were launched when Much brought them closer to their fans. Much also gave us international acts (Duran, Duran, Tina Turner, Iggy Pop, David Bowie, Madonna, Motorhead, Guns N’ Roses, Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers), and covered the second wave of music activism with events like Live Aid and the Amnesty International Human Rights Now! tour. Ranging from Toronto’s iconic studio at 299 Queen Street West, to Vancouver’s MuchWest, MuchMusic’s programming travelled across Canada and connected the Canadian music scenes in an unprecedented way. With stories of the bands, the music, the videos, the specialty shows, the style and the improvisational approach to daily broadcast life at Much, Is This Live? is told by the people who were there—the colourful cast of on-air VJs, the artists who found their way into our living rooms of the nation as never before, and the people behind the cameras. As our tour guide to the first decade at MuchMusic Christopher Ward delivers a full-on dose of pop culture nostalgia from the 1980s and ’90s, when the music scene in Canada changed forever.

I have been an unremitting fan of  Jane Siberry since the very beginning. She released a new album, Ulysses’ Purse, earlier this year, a release that, despite my unremitting fandom, I did not discover until earlier this week. My favourite track is Five & Dime; it is hard not to love a song with this line: But lead her to a ledger of a hopeless nightmarish accounting mess and she can bring the columns back to life with her numerical tenderness As is usual and right with Jane Siberry, you can both buy the album and download its various components freely, as your needs and abilities dictate. You can also simply send her money via Paypal, which is the easiest way to complete a transaction: no shopping carts or registrations required. Whatever way you choose to confront the album, I recommend you do so: it’s complicated and lovely and rich and melodic and confusing with a dizzying arrange of talented collaborators, including David Ramsden, Rebecca Jenkins, Mary Margaret O’Hara, and kd lang.

Peter Rukavina's Podcast

A CBC “Off the Beaten Track” episode in which I talk about Showboat and the history of the song Old Man River. Originally aired on August 20, 2000 on CBC Radio’s Mainstreet program in Prince Edward Island. Ol’ Man River Introduction: A brief history of the song “Ol’ Man River,” along with two very different interpretations by Canadian artists Curtis Driedger and Jane Siberry. Show Boat In 1926, a book called “Show Boat” by Edna Ferber was published – she was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan who had won the Pulitzer Prize in 1924 for her book So Big. Show Boat follows the life of Magnolia, daughter of the captain of the riverboat The Cotton Blossom. Magnolia marries a gambler, Gaylord Ravenal. As a result of his gambling, they separate Magnolia moves to Chicago where she takes up life in musical comedy. Their daughter follows her mother into show business, and eventually Magnolia and Gaylord are reunited years later at a performance of their now internationally famous daughter. Woven throughout this plot is the sub-plot concerning the lives of the black workers on the riverboats, and marriage of Magnolia’s best friend Julie La Verne and her husband, which runs afoul of the law because it is discovered that Julie is of mixed black and white heritage, and this is against the law. In 1927, collaborators Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II adapted the book into a Broadway show. Show Boat the musical was groundbreaking when it premiered in 1927, as musicals up to that point hadn’t had a coherent plot or songs tied to the action. Show Boat is said in many circles to mark the beginning of American musical theatre. Show Boat originally played Broadway in 1927, was adapted into a movie in 1936 and again in 1951, and was revived on Broadway in 1946, and several times thereafter, most famously in recent years in 1994 by Garth Drabinsky. Ol’ Man River The song Ol’ Man River is sung by Joe, one of the riverboat workers, several times throughout the musical. Edna Ferber said in her autobiography: “…Jerome Kern appeared at my apartment late one afternoon with a strange look of quiet exultation in his eyes. He sat down at the piano. He didn’t play the piano particularly well and his singing voice, though true, was negligible. He played and sang ‘Ol’ Man River.’ The music mounted, mounted, and I give you my word my hair stood on end, the tears came to my eyes, I breathed like a heroine in a melodrama. This was great music. This was music that would outlast Jerome Kern’s day and mine. I have never heard it since without that emotional surge. When SHOW BOAT was revived at the Casino Theater in New York just four years after its original production at the Ziegfeld I saw a New York first-night audience, after Paul Robeson’s singing of ‘Ol’ Man River,’ shout and cheer and behave generally as I’ve never seen an audience behave in any theater in all my years of playgoing…” The song is most closely associated with Paul Robeson, who played Joe in the Broadway production of Show Boat and in the 1936 movie. In the original 1927 lyrics, it’s written: I gits weary and sick of tryin’; I’m tired of livin’ and scared of dyin’ And Ol’ man river, he just keeps rollin’ along. Robeson later revised the lyrics to: I keeps laffin’ instead of cryin’ I must keep fightin’ until I’m dyin’ And Ol’ man river, he just keeps rollin’ along. Roberson, who had been a football star and then an actor, went on to a life as a political activist. Canadian Singers on Ol’ Man River Back on June 1, 1990, I was program director at Trent Radio, a community radio station in Peterborough, Ontario. We organized an evening of performances by local musicians at the Market Hall in downtown Peterborough. One of the performers was Curtis Driedger, formerly of the infamous Toronto band the CeeDees. Here’s some of his performance from that night, recorded live and originally broadcast on Trent Radio… [clip from “Curtis Dreidger live at Artspace”, recorded June 1, 1990; on cassette tape, queued] Toronto singer/songwriter Jane Siberry, who has, in recent years, been running her musical career largely through her own Sheeba Records website – www.sheeba.ca — is about to release an album of Celtic and American spirituals called “Hush.” From that album, here is her own rendition of “Ol’ Man River,” which you will immediately see is quite different from Curtis’ [clip from “Hush” by Jane Siberry, track 9]
