Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Kathryn Frady, who had the idea for Frank to donate a See More Smokies adventure to the auction at Marble City Opera's recent fundraiser. Frank has been sending press releases to many newspapers in the area to promote Tennessee Scholars' Bowl. He also quizzed Tala Shatara and Veronica Ogbe on Living East Tennessee. Kathryn was surprised that Frank cut his biggest fig trees to about knee-high. He anticipates that they will grow back vigorously in the Spring. Frank called himself the “figgest loser” after attending an event for fig growers. On the registration form, he described himself as “intermediate” but later realized he should have chosen “beginner.” Frank's friend Bean doesn't like it when Frank talks about figs. Frank thinks that Bean should include the song “Them Figs” by The Subdudes on the podcast A Cup of Tea and a Chat with Allie and Bean. Here's a link to the song: https://youtu.be/Ydf4OqIrFJg and here's a live version: https://youtu.be/4jA2Vz4eOnM Frank brought some of his Brown Turkey figs to exchange at the event. He and his wife picked a Negronne plant and a LSU Scott's Black plant. The guest speakers were very critical of Brown Turkey figs, suggesting that the trees were only good as rootstock for grafting. Nobody picked Frank's Brown Turkey plants in the exchange. This episode is sponsored by BoneZones.com (don't forget the S). Kathryn's dog Sasha got a lot of Christmas presents. One of Frank's sisters got a second dog. His other sister has an older dog that needed to go to the vet. Frank started to say “how” but cut himself off mid-syllable. His sister knew that Frank almost asked, “how old is he?” Frank and his wife have had their iPhones for over five years. The batteries don't hold a charge. Every time he starts the car, his iPhone plays a song from Apple Music, usually “The Knife” from the Psycho soundtrack. He figured out that he can say “Hey Siri, stop!” to stop the music. When Frank upgraded the IOS software, his Irish female Siri voice morphed into a horrible robotic voice. He looked for solutions on YouTube and found a way to restore Irish female Siri. Frank also likes videos from Payette Forward that tell which iPhone settings you should turn off. Kathryn is planning to go to New York to audition for some operatic roles. She dyed her hair to a #2, which is the second-darkest color. Kathryn was very blond when Frank met her about five and a half years ago. Kathryn and her husband had Thanksgiving dinner with Frank and Jere. When Jere was preparing the dressing, she was surprised that Frank had eaten the celery she was planning to use. Kathryn's father had his first Christmas since retiring from being a pastor. Jere sang at a 4pm and 10pm Mass on Christmas Eve and then went to Midnight Mass with Frank. Sign up for a 30-day trial of Audible Premium Plus and get a free premium selection that's yours to keep. Dennis McNally was born in 1949 at Ft. Meade, Maryland, the son of a U.S. Army counter-intelligence operative. He attended 21 schools across many states and several countries, eventually graduating from high school in Maine and undergraduate school at St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY in 1971. He received his Ph.D. in American History from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1977 for a biography of Jack Kerouac which was published by Random House in 1979 under the title Desolate Angel: Jack Kerouac, the Beat Generation, and America. He settled in San Francisco, and after a period of freelance journalism (for the San Francisco Chronicle’s California Living and the Berkeley Monthly, among others) and odd jobs, he became archivist for Bill Graham Presents in 1983. In the year he worked there he established the BGP Archives. Having been selected as the Grateful Dead’s authorized biographer in 1980, he became the band’s publicist in 1984, and continued in those duties for Grateful Dead Productions until its dissolution in 2004. From 1984 to 1995, he toured with the band, in the process working on its behalf at the United Nations, the White House, and Congress. In 2002 he published his long-awaited history of the band, A Long Strange Trip/The Inside History of the Grateful Dead with Broadway Books, a division of Random House. It achieved the New York Times best-seller list. Since the closure of Grateful Dead Productions, he has worked as a freelance music publicist with clients that have included Bob Weir & RatDog, the Jerry Garcia Estate LLC, David Lindley, Little Feat, the Subdudes, and a wide variety of other music business clients, including the Sonoma Jazz Festival, Rhino Records (for whose “Golden Road” package he received a Grammy nomination for liner notes), and many others. He recently completed his third book, On Highway 61/Black Music, Freedom, and America, a study of what white people have learned from black music in America from the minstrel era to Bob Dylan. It was published by Counterpoint Press in October, 2014. If you feel moved, please support the show

My guest today is Mr. Dave Malone. Dave is best known as being a 30+ year veteran as one of the vocalists, guitarists and songwriters with The Radiators, one of the quintessential New Orleans party bands. For over 30 years the “Rads” have defined the sound of good times in New Orleans and many a Tulane University grad has fine memories of attending a few Radiators gigs during his/her time spent in the Crescent City. Dave is a great singer, songwriter and, as you'll hear, an avid guitar collector with an amazing guitar collection. In this fun chat Dave talks about the New Orleans music scene in the early days of the Radiators, how the drummer brought in a chainsaw to the gig and proceeded to chop up tables, his brother Tommy Malone from the Subdudes (also a guest on the Riff Raff- see episode 19), how his hometown of Edgard, LA still affects his music and songwriting to this day and many other things- including a lot of laughs in between! Recorded at Dirty Power, New Orleans Oct. 2019 *In 2001 the Radiators equipment truck was stolen, it was a huge hit and the insurance screwed Dave over. The equipment was never found. I've reposted some of Dave's guitars that were never recovered so if anyone out there ever sees one of these instruments you know who it belongs to.* Melancon Telecaster- Dark green serial#9607 Fender '57 Reissue Stratocaster blonde serial #VO11050 Fender '62 Reissue with Tele Neck (Sea foam green) Serial #VO27861 DanElectro 12 String Blue Sparkle - Serial # 019912279 DanElectro Baritone (Robin Egg Blue) Serial #029902687 Gibson Chet Atkins (Black solid body acoustic) Serial #940197784 Fender Electric Mandolin (FM-61) Serial # KD00008172 Budda Verbmaster 30 Amplifier Serial #V3F-003 Budda Twinmaster 12 Serial #19-0174Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-riff-raff-with-shane-theriot/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
In this previously recorded interview from 2017, I interview Vance Gilbert who burst onto the singer/songwriter scene in the early 90's when buzz started spreading in the folk clubs of Boston about an ex-multicultural arts teacher who was knocking 'em dead at open mics. Born and raised in the Philadelphia area, Vance started out hoping to be a jazz singer and then discovered his affinity for the storytelling sensibilities of acoustic folk music. Once word got out about Gilbert's stage-owning singing and playing, Shawn Colvin invited him to be special guest on her Fat City Tour. Gilbert has recorded 12 albums, toured extensively as a headliner at festivals and clubs, and has been the opener of choice for artists as varied as Aretha Franklin, Arlo Guthrie, Anita Baker and comedian George Carlin. He has also been the opener of choice for Paul Reiser and The Subdudes. In my chat with Vance Gilbert, he shares some brilliant tips including:Strategies from the great comicsHow to introduce a song on stage (Why your "intro" should only either be historical or hysterical!) andThe 2 notebook approach to songwriting!Among other things!
Includes Al Rapone, Taj Mahal, Rockin Dopsie, Elmore James, The Subdudes, Joe Bonamassa, Clifton Chenier, Doyle Bramhall II, Al Rapone, Han Theessnick and Terry Evans, Geno Delofose, Freddie King, Saffire and The Uppity Blues Women, Beau Jouque and The Zydeco Hi-Rollers.
The Subdudes cofounding singer, guitarist, and songwriter was also a member of the beloved Li'l Queenie and the Percolators, as well as the supergroup, Tiny Town. He's an excitable boy who wears his heart on his sleeve, but unlike one of the Troubled Men, and at least one previous guest, Tommy manages to keep his pants on. Topics include a brass band fracas, a torrential rain, the Stones show, the Big Island Jazz and Blues Festival, a big band, the Edgard, La. connections, Guys and Dolls, smartphone learning, the original Continental Drifters, the Subdudes formation, Fort Collins, Colorado, Pete Anderson, Darcy Malone, decaf coffee, surnames of the past, Tiny Town, Bernie Leadon, Glyn Johns, artistic courage, a custom console, Ray Ganucheau, a reformation, a new record, Bruce Barielle, Chuck Prophet, mortality, Keith Keller, etiquette, Keith Richards, Ron Wood, band alchemy, Bill Wyman, a bass player joke, and much more. Subscribe, review, and rate on your favorite podcast platform. Follow and share on social media, and spread the Troubled Word. Robert Cline Jr. is a songwriter and performer who strives to write songs and shares stories that tell the truth and make people feel what you feel inside. Robert Cline Jr.’s career began as a collaboration with members of The Subdudes, and continued his career playing and writing with members of the Muscle Shoals community, one of the legendary birthplaces of American music. My guest today is Mr. Tommy Malone. You know there is just something about hearing someone from South Louisiana belt out a vocal or play a guitar solo- they just seem to have a certain "thing" to the way they phrase and deliver a line and my guest Tommy Malone certainly epitomizes that. Tommy is a New Orleans based singer/songwriter and guitarist who, in my opinion is criminally overlooked as one of the best of the New Orleans scene. (His brother Dave Malone is one of the founding members of another one of the great New Orleans party bands- The Radiators.) Tommy is probably best known as one of the founders and lead singer of The Subdudes, one of the best known bands to emerge out of the New Orleans scene in the late 1980's early 1990's. Using a unique instrumentation by replacing the traditional drum kit with percussion and tamborine, and oftentimes accordion along with guitar and bass, they created their own version of funky New Orleans flavored roots/rock with an acoustic edge. Having made 11 records with the Subdudes as well as 3 solo records- one of which I had the pleasure of working on called “Natural Born Days”- which we'll talk about here. We also talk about Tiny Town, a short lived band that made one record that is one of my faves. In this interview, recorded on beautiful a fall-like day in early September at my home in New Orleans, Tommy tells me about his influences, guitars (and as usual when we hang out, we laugh like 5th graders and tell jokes, constantly goofing off.) Even though we do clown around a good bit in this one, there is some great info and for fans of Tommy and the Subdudes maybe a few stories you haven't heard. Hope you like this one! TOMMY MALONE has enjoyed a successful career as the guitarist, singer for the leg-endary SUBDUDES for over two decades. A musicians musician, he has recorded with Rosanne Cash, Shawn Colvin and Anders Osborne, and has impacted markets with hit other projects including Tiny Town and the Continental Drifters. His songs have been recorded by Joe Cocker, The Radiators, Tab Benoit and many others, but its his ability to perform his own stories and turn them into vivid musical images that sets him apart from other performers. His first solo record in 12 years 'Natural Born Days' tracks one mans journey through life, suffering through hard times from hurricanes to heartbreak but al-ways finding a way to keep on keeping on. HEY MARSEILLES [pronounced: hay mar-say ] is the critically acclaimed orchestral pop sextet from Seattle. The band produces a lush wall of orchestral sound using cello, viola, trumpet, accordion, clarinets, piano, guitar and drums around Matt Bishop's memorable melodies and honest lyricism. Their unique orchestral chamber pop (or 'folkestra' as the band likes to say) has become the groups signature sound. The band has just released their sophomore album 'Lines We Trace'. It represents a band steady enough in its sound, that it can expand beyond it.
