It's no secret that women in media are often subjected to criticism about their looks that their male counterparts rarely hear. It's 2023 and this needs to stop. My first guest today is an award-winning journalist with over two decades of experience in the industry and while we should be celebrating that part of the story, we're not. Sadly despite all of Tess van Straaten's hard work committed to her craft, she is often subjected to to comments about appearance that diminish and detract from her achievements, as she was recently when someone wrote a letter criticizing her sleeveless dress on air. She joins me to discuss her viral story. 2023 is the year we shift out of languishing and into post-traumatic growth. Candy Ho, Board Chair of Ceric, the only charitable organization of its kind in Canada, focused on career development education and research joins me today to discuss today to share insights on how to navigate the current workplace and workforce realities, in addition to resources available for those looking to build purposeful careers after nearly three years of disruption. Anne Brodie is here with entertainment and this week we take a look at LIVING, starring the absolutely wonderful Bill Nighy, in the story of an ordinary man, reduced by years of oppressive office routine to a shadow existence, who at the eleventh hour makes a supreme effort to turn his dull life into something wonderful. Plus Aftersun, from writer/director Charlotte Wells which dominated the Toronto Film Critics Association Awards this year. For years, nurses across the country have been sounding the alarm about the impact that staffing shortages are having on patient care—yet those warning calls have continually gone unanswered. Ontario in particular is facing a full-blown healthcare crisis and nurses have reached a breaking point. To add insult to injury, Internal documents by the Ministry of Health were released this week through the freedom of information act that shows the Ontario government knew that passing Bill 124 would worsen the province's healthcare staffing crisis. Dianne Martin from WeRPN joins me to discuss. Finally, finances are a top concern for most Canadians right now so Stephanie Chabot from the Finance Diaries is here with some tips for riding out the storm. Stephanie believes that by being able to openly discuss finance topics: we can understand them better, avoid mistakes others have made, feel more empowered, and make better decisions. Sylvia Jones said the government is considering many ideas in an effort to keep emergency departments from closing. Should we be concerned? GUEST: Clement Nocos, Director of Policy with the Broadbent Institute - He was a man who wrote the music and performed at the concerts — the wild, manic wonderful concerts — that many people, especially Hamiltonians, milestoned their lives around (and still do). In short, Gord Lewis brought people energy and joy, joy with a rough exterior perhaps — I mean, we're talking punk icons Teenage Head here — but joy nonetheless. GUEST: Lou Molinaro, Instructor at the Harris Institute for Music - Social media users deliberately attempting to silence journalists and others with messages of hate has become a norm that is threatening democracy. Is it time for regulation? GUEST: Jeffrey Dvorkin, Senior Fellow at Massey College, and author of “Trusting the News in a Digital Age”?

Libby Znaimer is joined by David Peterson, former Ontario Liberal Premier, Howard Hampton, former leader of the Ontario NDP and Hugh Segal who served as chief of staff to Ontario's 18th Premier, the late Bill Davis. Today: we start the discussion off with a recap of the new Ford government cabinet that saw, among other changes, Sylvia Jones take over as deputy premier and minister of health. Will Sylvia be able to fill the big shoes that her predecessor Christine Elliott left? And, we continue the discussion about government incompetence. There seems to be a lot of it these days. Some examples that come to mind include Global Affairs sending a senior rep to the Russian Embassy to celebrate Russia Day and federal transportation minister Omar Alghabra blaming travelers for problems at international airports like Pearson. Our panel weighs in on all of that and more. ---- HOW CANADA PERFORMED ON ITS PANDEMIC RESPONSE + FOURTH COVID-19 BOOSTERS

Alex is joined with Jason Lietaer, Conservative Strategist and President of Enterprise Canada to discuss Ron Taverner's decision to withdraw from consideration for OPP Commissioner. In a short letter sent Thursday afternoon to the Community Safety Minister, Sylvia Jones, Taverner said the decision to withdraw stemmed from the controversy surrounding his appointment and to protect the integrity of the rank. The 72-year-old Toronto police superintendent is a family friend of Premier Doug Ford, and his appointment set off accusations of political interference in the hiring process for the province's top policing job. Taverner, who had been in law enforcement for 51 years, said in the letter that he was grateful to have the confidence of the government and believed his experience and skills would have served the public in the best possible way.
