Ursprungligen publicerad 2022-06-07.Det är kanske svårt att tänka sig det idag, men kiltar var länge olagliga, liksom de skotskrutiga mönster, tartan, som kännetecknar dem. Den engelska lagen förbjöd dem under senare delen av 1700-talet, då de förknippades med motståndet mot engelsk övermakt och särskilt det skotska upproret 1745. Det var först 1822, då den skotske författaren Walter Scott, som sedermera blev adlad, tog emot den engelske kungen, som de skotska tygerna och traditionella plaggen blev tillåtna igen – och idag förknippar vi dem med brittisk militär, kungahuset och parader med säckpipor och virveltrummor snarare än med uppror mot centralmakten. Sir Walter Scott var från början poet, innan han tog steget över till att börja skriva något på den tiden så föraktat som historiska äventyrsromaner. I sina dikter hade han ägnat sig mycket åt traditionella skotska motiv. Dessutom samlade han in folklig diktning och var en central företrädare för den romantiska nationalismen redan innan han blev en av 1800-talet bäst säljande romanförfattare, beundrad och imiterad i hela Europa. Samtidigt som han var en skotsk nationalist var han emellertid inte för att Skottland skulle bli självständigt från England. Hans nationalism var kulturell, närmast svärmiskt idylliserande; till skillnad från på de flesta andra håll i Europa efter Napoleonkrigens upprivande av de gamla maktkonstellationerna på kontinenten, där de nationella frihetssträvandena skulle komma att prägla hela seklet.Den ryske författaren Nikolaj Gogol var en stor beundrare av Walter Scott. Eller ryske förresten. Hans förfäder var ukrainska och han debuterade med flera skildringar av ukrainskt liv och leverne, i såväl novellerna med ukrainska motiv som i den lilla historiska romanen Taras Bulba – vilken handlar om ett kosackuppror mot den tidigare polska överheten. Men han skrev på ryska och förknippas numera snarare med 1800-talets ryska nationalism än med den ukrainska. Ryska kritiker kritiserade honom för att han ägnade sig åt ett så litet, marginellt folk, medan somliga ukrainska intellektuella ifrågasatte att han skrev om Ukraina på ryska. Men vad skulle han göra? Att skriva skönlitteratur på ukrainska skulle ha dömt honom till den litterära marginalen. Ryska, fast färgad av ukrainska motiv, uttryck och talesätt, blev hans uttrycksmedel. Både Walter Scott och Nikolaj Gogol verkade som så många författare in i vår tid, i ett spänningsfält mellan språk och makt, periferi och metropol. Och precis som det skotska införlivats och blivit en del av den brittiska ikonografin så har det ukrainska kommit att förknippas med något äkta och ursprungligt ryskt.Ryssland är inte en nationalstat i vår mening. Det är ett rike, snarast, vars självbild bygger på en uppfattning om att man bär på ett ansvar som man givits av ödet, motsvarande den amerikanska idén om 'manifest destiny', att samla omgivande länder i en rysk gemenskap. En kulturell och politisk ordning med en självklar rätt till överhöghet över andra nationer. Om länderna och deras folk själva är med på saken är sekundärt. Ukraina har visserligen en komplicerad historia i relation till Ryssland och inte minst till den ryska statens historiska uppkomst. Men ukrainarnas ryskhet, som de ryska imperialisterna ser som en självklarhet idag, är inte något givet historiskt faktum. Den har tvingats fram genom att ukrainska böcker har bränts, språket har förbjudits och de folkliga sederna har förtryckts. Samtidigt som det ukrainska, inklusive de kosacker som Gogol gärna skrev om, införlivades i det ryska kulturarvet så var det också så att ukrainska skolor stängdes, predikningar på ukrainska förbjöds och ukrainsk litteratur beslagtogs och förstördes ända in på 1900-talet. Denna politik, som syftade till att utplåna all ukrainsk nationalkänsla fördes under flera hundra år, med varierande intensitet, av de ryska makthavarna under såväl kejsardömet som kommunistdiktaturen.Språket är centralt för sammanhållningen i de flesta nationalstater. Konsolideringen av de europeiska nationalstaterna sedan 1500-talet har i hög grad handlat om centralisering inte bara av makten utan minst lika mycket av språket, grammatiken, uttrycksformerna för lagar och religion.Imperier expanderar genom att breda ut sitt språk – det gäller spanska, engelska och franska såväl som ryska, arabiska och kinesiska – ofta i kombination med att personer som etniskt hör till centralmaktens nationalitet flyttar in. Den ryska inflyttningen i ockuperade och annekterade nationer har lett till att det finns betydande ryskspråkiga minoriteter i nästan alla tidigare delar av det ryska och sovjetiska imperiet. I Ukraina utgör de knappt trettio procent. Men att vara rysktalande är inte detsamma som att vara lojal mot Ryssland, lika lite som de människor, inklusive författare, forskare, journalister och intellektuella som valt att arbeta på tidigare kolonialmakters språk i Afrika, Asien och Latinamerika därför är lojala mot dem. Ändå förblir språkfrågan viktig. För hur ska ett land, som varit del av ett imperium i flera århundraden, egentligen förhålla sig om man vill bevara och kanske till och med utveckla sin särart? För utöver de inflyttade har ju vanligen även den inhemska eliten bytt till centralmaktens språk.Tänk om Gogol skrivit på ukrainska, Walter Scott på gaeliska – och tänk om alla de indiska och afrikanska författare som är så viktiga idag skulle välja sina lokala ursprungliga språk hellre än engelska eller franska. Den speciella stil, det laddade förhållande till språket, som bidrar till att göra författare med denna typ av bakgrund särskilt intressanta, skulle vi gå miste om. Men vad skulle vi vinna istället? Provinsiella konstnärskap utan större allmänmänskligt intresse eller en ökad rikedom av uttryck och tankeformer?Språket är alltid centralt för den nationella självständighetssträvan i förhållande till gamla kolonialmakter. Det gäller i Asien, Latinamerika och Afrika såväl som inom Europa. Författare är en del av denna strävan att bygga en egen kultur i resterna av kollapsade imperier. Men litteraturen överskrider också sådana språkliga uppdelningar. Nikolaj Gogol, liksom sir Walter Scott, befann sig i ett spänningsfält där litteraturen fick en särskild laddning och betydelse, just för att den skrevs på tvärs mot de gränser som utgjordes av politiska ambitioner. Knjiga Primoža Reparja Saga o prostosti duše je sestavljena iz več problemskih sklopov, in sicer: razgrnitve avtorjeve izvirne filozofije, utemeljene na Kierkegaardovi misli in personalizmu, kritičnosti do pojavov sodobnega sveta, premišljevanju o haikuju, pisanju o Gogoljevem delu Taras Bulba, skicah nove metafizike Béle Hamvasa, možnostih novega branja Ivana Cankarja in ocenjevanju pesniških zbirk. Nekatera avtorjeva stališča so oblikovana dialoško – kot odgovori na vprašanja Stanislave Chrobákove in Marjane Lavrič. Primož Repar je znan kot prevajalec Kierkegaardovih del iz izvirnikov. Spoznanja tako imenovanega očeta eksistencializma so se ga dotaknila že v zgodnji mladosti. Opus danskega misleca je izhodišče za Reparjev humanizem. Prizadeva si za novo paradigmo, sestavljeno iz nove oekonomije kot zbirne skupnosti in skupnega doma, nove pravde v pomenu pravičnosti, nove družabnosti kot prvega pogoja kakršnekoli družbe in politike ljubezni, tako rekoč edine možne rešitve v svetu. Zasnoval je humanističen projekt, v katerem so tudi prvine utopičnosti in vidiki najstva. Izhaja iz tistega, kar je v svetu in med ljudmi narobe, in se zavzema za to, kako bi moralo biti vse skupaj videti in kakšno naj bo. Poudarja pomen posamičnika in njegove odgovornosti, pristen odnos do bližnjika in dobre medčloveške odnose nasploh. Zanj sta odločilna individualizem in singularnost, tudi transcendenca je tista, ki je kot hotenje po večnosti in presežnosti neke vrste določilo minljivega človeka. Avtor je kritičen do hrematizma oziroma pohlepne ekonomije in drugih pojavnih oblik neoliberalnega kapitalizma, zlasti izkoriščanja, prekarnega dela in potrošništva. Spominja se tudi omejitev v času epidemije korona virusa. Kljub neposredni kritičnosti ohranja svojevrstni optimizem, upanje in zaupanje v ljubezen, in med drugim pravi: »Ko ljubimo, dajemo sebe transcendenci kot drugemu. Ko udejanjamo ljubezen, smo pristali v politiko ljubezni namesto sovraštva, politiko sprave z mrtvimi in pomiritve med živimi, politiko bivanjskega preobrata, se pustimo graditi gradnikom ljubezni, tako sebi, ko to dopustimo tudi drugim, izgrajujemo resnico, ki je resnica zame, ki je resnica moje samotranscendence oziroma sebetranscendence.« Politika ljubezni med drugim pomeni solidarnost in sožitje med ljudmi. Avtor si prizadeva tudi za ohranjanje narave, glede nove tehnologije pa opozarja na pasti in hkrati priznava dobre strani njene uporabe, tako pretok informacij kot povezovanje v svetu. Poznavanje haikuja in vednost o njem Primož Repar podaja v pogovoru s filozofinjo, pesnico in publicistko Stanislavo Chrobákovo, slovaško umetnico in teoretičarko, ki je v letih bivanja pri nas veliko prispevala h kulturnim in drugim stikom med Slovenijo in Slovaško ter v slovenski ustvarjalnosti zapustila pomembno in vidno sled. Založba in revija Apokalipsa s podnaslovom Revija za preboj v živo kulturo haikuju posvečata veliko pozornosti, postal naj bi celo eden zaščitnih znakov njune založniške filozofije. Haiku izraža eksistencialno odprtost za neznatne in subtilne izrazne možnosti, njegovo jedro je dogodek s posebno osvetlitvijo. Repar priznava, da se haikuji, kakršne ustvarja, nočejo držati kakih omejujočih pravil, temveč se bolj ravnajo po svojem lastnem notranjem ritmu; sam se je izvirno in inovativno domislil celo dvojnih haikujev. Avtor pravi, da se v času brezbrižnosti in vseenosti haiku kot čista poezija pojavlja kot dar opazovanja in dragoceno urjenje pozornosti. Primož Repar piše v esejističnem in literariziranem slogu, tudi poetičnem, in uporablja eksistencialije, a kljub temu je njegovo pisanje filozofsko koherentno ter zasnovano na široki in poglobljeni filozofski vednosti. Na koncu knjige je predstavljeno Reparjevo bogato literarno, filozofsko, uredniško, založniško in organizacijsko delo. Njegova doktorska disertacija o Kierkegaardu iz leta 2009 je pomenila pionirsko delo te vrste na Slovenskem. Reparjevo delovanje je odmevno tudi v mednarodnem prostoru. Kot neodvisni raziskovalec in vodja strokovnih programov pri Srednjeevropskem raziskovalnem inštitutu Sørena Kierkegaarda sodeluje na številnih evropskih univerzah in inštitutih in občasno predava na njih; tako je na primer leta 2018 v Pekingu na Kitajskem govoril o politiki ljubezni in soorganiziral predavanja na omizjih, povezanih s Kierkegaardovo mislijo. Primož Repar je tudi prejemnik več nagrad in priznanj, njegove knjige so prevedene v tuje jezike. Jurij Hudolin na zavihku platnic piše, da je Reparjeva Saga o prostosti duše avtorefleksija in tudi samokritika. Kdor pa je tega zmožen, velja za ustvarjalca, ki mu zaupamo in z radovednostjo segamo po njegovih knjigah.

Synopsis John Lennon was born on today's date in the year 1940, in Liverpool, England — during a German air raid on that city, as it happened. With three other young lads from Liverpool, Lennon would eventually become world-famous, courtesy of the band he helped formed in 1959 called the Beatles. The Beatles started out in a Liverpool nightclub called the Cavern, playing pop tunes of the day, but soon began performing original material of their own. Before disbanding in 1970, some recognizable elements of classical music were incorporated into some Beatles songs, including a string quartet, a Baroque trumpet, and even an orchestra. And it wasn't just a one-sided exchange: Leonard Bernstein played a Beatles song on one of his “Young People's Concerts” to demonstrate sonata form. Arthur Fiedler performed symphonic arrangements of Beatles tunes at his Boston Pops concerts. And decades after the Beatles disbanded, former member Paul McCartney began composing original chamber works and big concert hall pieces, including a semi-autobiographical “Liverpool Oratorio.” Not surprisingly, some young British and American composers coming of age in the 1960s and 70s credit the Beatles as an influence. Kriget mot den ukrainska kulturen och språket har pågått länge. Torbjörn Elensky funderar hur språk både koloniserar och frigör, men också hur litteraturen överskrider de pådyvlade gränserna. ESSÄ: Detta är en text där skribenten reflekterar över ett ämne eller ett verk. Åsikter som uttrycks är skribentens egna.Det är kanske svårt att tänka sig det idag, men kiltar var länge olagliga, liksom de skotskrutiga mönster, tartan, som kännetecknar dem. Den engelska lagen förbjöd dem under senare delen av 1700-talet, då de förknippades med motståndet mot engelsk övermakt och särskilt det skotska upproret 1745. Det var först 1822, då den skotske författaren Walter Scott, som sedermera blev adlad, tog emot den engelske kungen, som de skotska tygerna och traditionella plaggen blev tillåtna igen och idag förknippar vi dem med brittisk militär, kungahuset och parader med säckpipor och virveltrummor snarare än med uppror mot centralmakten. Sir Walter Scott var från början poet, innan han tog steget över till att börja skriva något på den tiden så föraktat som historiska äventyrsromaner. I sina dikter hade han ägnat sig mycket åt traditionella skotska motiv. Dessutom samlade han in folklig diktning och var en central företrädare för den romantiska nationalismen redan innan han blev en av 1800-talet bäst säljande romanförfattare, beundrad och imiterad i hela Europa. Samtidigt som han var en skotsk nationalist var han emellertid inte för att Skottland skulle bli självständigt från England. Och precis som det skotska införlivats och blivit en del av den brittiska ikonografin så har det ukrainska kommit att förknippas med något äkta och ursprungligt ryskt.Ryssland är inte en nationalstat i vår mening. Det är ett rike, snarast, vars självbild bygger på en uppfattning om att man bär på ett ansvar som man givits av ödet, motsvarande den amerikanska idén om 'manifest destiny', att samla omgivande länder i en rysk gemenskap. En kulturell och politisk ordning med en självklar rätt till överhöghet över andra nationer. Om länderna och deras folk själva är med på saken är sekundärt. Ukraina har visserligen en komplicerad historia i relation till Ryssland och inte minst till den ryska statens historiska uppkomst. Men ukrainarnas ryskhet, som de ryska imperialisterna ser som en självklarhet idag, är inte något givet historiskt faktum. Den har tvingats fram genom att ukrainska böcker har bränts, språket har förbjudits och de folkliga sederna har förtryckts. Samtidigt som det ukrainska, inklusive de kosacker som Gogol gärna skrev om, införlivades i det ryska kulturarvet så var det också så att ukrainska skolor stängdes, predikningar på ukrainska förbjöds och ukrainsk litteratur beslagtogs och förstördes ända in på 1900-talet. Denna politik, som syftade till att utplåna all ukrainsk nationalkänsla fördes under flera hundra år, med varierande intensitet, av de ryska makthavarna under såväl kejsardömet som kommunistdiktaturen.Språket är centralt för sammanhållningen i de flesta nationalstater. För utöver de inflyttade har ju vanligen även den inhemska eliten bytt till centralmaktens språk.Tänk om Gogol skrivit på ukrainska, Walter Scott på gaeliska och tänk om alla de indiska och afrikanska författare som är så viktiga idag skulle välja sina lokala ursprungliga språk hellre än engelska eller franska. Den speciella stil, det laddade förhållande till språket, som bidrar till att göra författare med denna typ av bakgrund särskilt intressanta, skulle vi gå miste om. Men vad skulle vi vinna istället? Provinsiella konstnärskap utan större allmänmänskligt intresse eller en ökad rikedom av uttryck och tankeformer? Språket är alltid centralt för den nationella självständighetssträvan i förhållande till gamla kolonialmakter. Det gäller i Asien, Latinamerika och Afrika såväl som inom Europa. Författare är en del av denna strävan att bygga en egen kultur i resterna av kollapsade imperier. Men litteraturen överskrider också sådana språkliga uppdelningar. Nikolaj Gogol, liksom sir Walter Scott, befann sig i ett spänningsfält där litteraturen fick en särskild laddning och betydelse, just för att den skrevs på tvärs mot de gränser som utgjordes av politiska ambitioner. Synopsis On today's date in 1999, the Lyric Opera of Chicago premiered a new opera by the American composer William Bolcom, based on “A View from the Bridge,” a powerful play by Arthur Miller. Now, not all stage plays “translate” well into opera, as Bolcom was well aware: “In theater, you have the text and then below it you have the subtext,” said Bolcom. “In opera it is pretty much the opposite, the subtext is what you are really dealing with first and foremost: big, raw emotions, which are supported by the text. In fact, Miller's play, although set in Brooklyn in the 1950s, has often been likened to a Greek tragedy, a theatrical form in which the chorus plays an important role. Bolcom saw that as a real opportunity: "If you are going to do an opera from a play, it better have a dimension that the play doesn't. In a play, you can't have your chorus speak because it is financially prohibitive: as soon as the chorus opens up its mouth the price goes up because of actors' equity. So, naturally one of the great resources of opera houses is an opera chorus, a resource you CAN use much more easily." “The most essential horrors revealed by Gogol are not of Russia, but of the soul...”Nikolai Vasilevich Gogol (1809-1852) is one of the most important figures of Russian literature, initiating a prose tradition that influenced everyone who came after him. In this lecture from the Pushkin House salon at its old home in Ladbroke Grove, preeminent writer and critic Victor Erlich elucidates with characteristic wit and incision the elements of Gogol's metaphors and plots which draw on the grotesque. In these surreal and bizarre images, Gogol reveals truths about our world and our selves which are always strikingly compelling. This talk and discussion was recorded at some point between 1963 and 1968 — we know this to be the case as Erlich is mentioned as chair of the Yale department of Slavic languages and literature, a post he held between those dates — and likely near the end of that period, as his book Gogol (1969) is mentioned as upcoming. Erlich speaks about all of Gogol's main works, including the Ukrainian Tales, the Petersburg Tales — Nevsky Prospect, The Nose and The Overcoat; Taras Bulba, Diary of a Madman, and his final controversial masterpiece, Dead Souls.This episode was catalogued and digitised by Anastasia Koro and Andrey Levitskiy, and was edited and produced for Pushkin House by Rafy Hay.
Mykola Lysenko (1842- 1912) is the father of modern Ukrainian classical music. His prolific life’s work laid the foundation for the further development and expansion of Ukrainian musical culture. He influenced a large group of Ukrainian composers, including Stetsenko, Stepovyi, Leontovych, Koshyts, and Liudkevych. A compilation of Lysenko’s works in 22 volumes was published in Kyiv in 1950–59.Lysenko was a composer, ethnomusicologist, pianist, and conductor. He studied at the Kharkiv and Kyiv universities and, later, at the Leipzig Conservatory under Reinicke and Richter (1867–69). From 1874 to 1876 he studied orchestration under Rimsky-Korsakov in St. Petersburg. In 1904, he founded his own School of Music and Drama in Kyiv. The list of Lysenko’s operatic compositions include Black Sea Cossacks (1872); three operas based on the works of the Ukrainian writer Mykola Hohol – Christmas Night (1873–82), The Drowned Maiden (1883) and Taras Bulba (1890); and the operettas Natalka from Poltava (1889) and Aeneas (1911). Himself a well-known pianist, Lysenko composed a piano sonata, two rhapsodies, a suite, a scherzo and a rondo, as well as an abundance of smaller pieces, including songs without words, nocturnes, waltzes and polonaises. He also wrote a number of works for strings. Of the Ukrainian composers, Lysenko was the most committed to the art song genre. In this episode, I explore the rich, melodic and memorable film music of Hollywood Golden Age composer Franz Waxman. Born in Germany in 1906, Waxman was known by his peers as the consummate musician, having studied music in Berlin while supporting himself by performing and arranging pop music of the day in local cafes. Waxman emigrated from Germany to the United States in the early 1930's, along with many talented artists, and became part of that first generation of brilliant musicians who developed and perfected the art of film scoring, alongside giants such as Max Steiner, Alfred Newman and Erich Wolfgang Korngold. I discuss Waxman's place in the early days of the new art form of music for motion pictures (the famed "Golden Age"), plus its development overall for some context, and his evolving style through the highlights during his career, including REBECCA, SUNSET BOULEVARD, THE SPIRIT OF ST. “Can a meretricious, inane movie with nothing else to recommend it produce a radiant, rousing film score?” asks Gary Giddins in “Rolling Thunder,” the January/February 2018 edition of Film Comment‘s “Playing Along” column. “Very rarely,” he answers. Although Giddins isolates Franz Waxman's score for Taras Bulba as a specific example, the guests on this week's episode of the Film Comment Podcast each provide a couple more, which led to reminiscences about genre sampler OSTs, unlikely pop music cues, and whether or not Steven Spielberg's idea of humor is just…shouting. Matthew Sweet on the film music of Franz Waxman and in this, the second of two programmes, the focus is on the post war years - a time which gave us some of Waxman's greatest scores from Sunset Boulevard to Taras Bulba. Matthew also looks at Waxman's major contribution to the classical musical life of America through the annual Los Angeles Music Festival which Waxman created and ran, and at how his remarkable musical gifts helped establish the sound of Hollywood in the years following the Second World War. Sadly and suddenly, he passed away at the age of 46 from a brain hemorrhage on August 7th, 1993. Jason celebrates Budd’s 70th anniversary with music from FEAR IS THE KEY and his final score for PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. Back in 2009 Intrada Records released Jerry Goldsmith score to ONE LITTLE INDIAN by Jerry Goldsmith. You’ll hear a suite from that score which was initially released in 1973. Afterwards, Jason treats you with music from David Arnold’s forgotten classic to LAST OF THE DOGMEN and then rounds off the program with a flourish with music from Tadlow Records’ re-recording of TARAS BULBA by Franz Waxman.
