Armored Saint singer John Bush and bass player Joey Vera, who are currently out on tour with Queensryche. They'll be coming through Detroit to play the Majestic Theater on April 14th. Joey said of touring with the QR guys, "It's always fun touring with friends, people you get along with." We talked about their experience on the Monsters Of Rock Cruise. "Yeah, they're fun. You always see a lot of people you know." Joey said. The guys told me about going to Anthrax's Scott Ian's 60th birthday in Las Angeles at the end of 2023. John said there were some really talented people there celebrating the milestone. The band recently recorded a cover of "One Chain Don't Make No Prison" which they're going to release as a stand-alone single. That being said, the guys are all about making full albums. They talked about album reissues, as well as vinyl copies of all their albums. I had to ask them about the new Armored Saint music they're working on. As far as writing on the road, Joey said they don't do it. "We just write at our own pace." He went on to say they have six or seven songs demoed. They'll be touring and then returning to the studio to finish it up by the end of the year. Something I didn't know about Armored Saint was that their first show outside of hometown shows was at Harpos. They said they played a radio station show way back in 1984. "That was our first show ever outside of California," Joey said. John talked of that show being added last minute, as they were supposed to play Chicago first. They also played Cobo Hall on that first tour. "We just couldn't believe what was happening," Joey said of playing some of these classic venues. Joey told the story of crashing a car with Tommy Lee of Motley Crue. We also talked about their tour with W.A.S.P. and Metallica, where they were snowed-in, in Buffalo, New York. Joey also told a funny story from early in their career about a comment he made about Blackie Lawless and W.A.S.P. on the radio. Great to talk to the guys!

In the heart of the Lone Star State, Dallas, one of its major cities, is a vibrant blend of rich Texas history and modern charm. From the iconic skyline to the rich cultural culinary scene, Dallas promises an unforgettable adventure for every traveler. We ended our Dallas trip in big ole Dallas. We kicked off Sunday with an outstanding church service at Park Cities PCPC church in downtown Dallas, then changed in the car (yes, we did that) and sped over to our JFK Assassination and Museum Tour. We met at the JKF memorial, which was ugly, isolating, and empty. A solitary place for thinking and apparently singing, this spot was supposed to be ugly, a prominent reminder of the tragedy that occurred on November 22, 1963. We booked this trip through TripAdvisor, and we were taken on a full walking and driving tour around the city. Our fantastic tour guide gave us the history and background of Lee Harvey Oswald, a tour of JFK's exact assignations spots, and the conspiracy (or truth) behind the horrific events. We even explored the Lee Harvey Oswald Rooming House, where Lee resided. The tour was terrific and quite informative; however, make sure you get to the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza on time! We arrived 5 minutes late to our scheduled time, and the grumpy employees would not let us in! Apparently, it was the first time this had occurred. The tour started at 1:40 p.m. and lasted about 4 hours. Mid-tour, our guide took us to the Dallas Farmers Market, where I had the best brisket I have ever had at Beyond the Butchers Homestead Grille. If you don't like BBQ, the market had everything from sushi to Jamaican food and cute boutiques and shops. Here, I discovered the best-smelling soaps and lotions at Abundantly Aromatic and bought way too many of them!If you are a foodie looking for the best eats around town, try Hudson House. If you are more of a coffee person, try LaLa Land in lower Greenville, where you can order breakfast but focus on the excellent coffee. For an elegant French-inspired brunch spot, try Toulouse Cafe.Try these Tex Mex. spots for lunch or dinner: Mesero in Klyde Warren Park, Las Palmas and Gloria's in Uptown, Meso Maya in Downtown Dallas, Javier's, Casa Mama's, and Gloria's. The Velvet Taco is a great fast-food taco spot. My fave late-night downtown taquito spot was Uno Mas. They are open till 11:00 p.m. and are perfect for any late-night cravings! Their tacos and queso fundido were terrific, and our waitress was super cool and friendly. For the best Margarita in Dallas (called the Mambo Taxi), try Mi Cocina in Highland Park Village. For excellent rooftop drinks, try HG Supply Co. For a Casual New American kitchen & wine bar, try Sixty Vines. For the best pizza in Dallas, try Cane Rosso. For fresh seafood, try TJ's Seafood Market. Uchi has incredible sushi, and Bob's Steak & Chop House is an A+ steakhouse. The Honor Bar has shareable snacks and delectable sandwiches, and Pecan Lodge is a phenomenal BBQ joint. For a casual burger restaurant, try Rodeo Goat.Other unique spots for tasty lunch, dinner, and drinks are The Henry in Uptown, Dolce Rivera in Uptown, and Casablanca in the Bishop Arts District. If you are looking for other activities to do in Dallas, the Fort Worth Water Gardens are a different sight. The Dallas Arboretum is gorgeous in the Spring or Autumn. We also saw the Rocky Horror Show at the Majestic Theater. It was a bit crazy for my speed but very interactive, and the regular playgoers loved it. Other fun areas in and around Dallas to explore include Highland Park Village, West Village, Deep Ellum Dallas, Trinity Groves, John F. Kennedy Memorial Plaza, Northpark Center, and Klyde Warren Park. The homes in Highland Park are spectacularly enormous. West Village is perfect for people-watching while you eat. Deep Ellum Dallas has fun restaurants, breweries, and bars. Northpark Center is a local favorite mall, and Highland Park is a great shopping spot for all your luxury needs. We stayed in the Magnolia Hotel while we were in downtown Dallas. It was beautiful on the outside and a little dusty on the inside, but I loved the view of downtown Dallas, the full-length vintage mirror, the large bathtub, and the cute coffee shop attached to the Hotel. I found the Magnolia on Expedia and would give it a B+.Some other Hot Hotel Recommendations are the Canvas Hotel, Crescent Court, The W, Virgin Hotel, and Canopy.

Back in September of this year, news came out that both shook and shocked the Broadway theater world: Phantom of the Opera will be closing and have its final performance in February 2023. After 35 years, the longest running Broadway show in history, this iconic show was going to be leaving the Majestic Theater for good. That closing date has since been updated to April 16th, no doubt due to the increase in ticket sales after that initial closing announcement, nonetheless the end of an era is near. I've worked with many a performer who have never known a Broadway without Andrew Lloyd Webber and Phantom of the Opera. This show was the first musical I ever really fell in love with, I mean that cast recording album has sold millions of copies (with an all-new, eight-disc Global Edition recently released). I certainly listened to that original cast recording with Michael Crawford ad nauseam in high school, and it was a big inspiration for me wanting to not only pursue theater but actually set my sights on a Broadway career, which has yet to come to fruition. But my guest today has been on Broadway with this show for 15 years, and he'll be sharing some fascinating and funny stories from his long tenure with Phantom of the Opera. Jeremy Stolle is the final guest for season 6, and he and I first met doing Gaston at Disney World down in Florida. Now, if that sounds familiar to you, Will Swenson is another Broadway actor who's been on the podcast, and he and I also shared Gaston duties during my time at Disney World. But Jeremy left Disney and came to New York a little bit before me, and during his years with Phantom has performed the featured part of Passarino in the ensemble, the supporting role of Piangi, and has also played the two leading roles of Raoul as well as the Phantom himself. We talk about what has kept him at the show for so long and the various opportunities, experiences, and mishaps it's given him these past 15 years.  Timeline of this episode's conversation: 01:49 - Jeremy and Patrick discuss their Gaston beginnings  7:07 - Jeremy struggled when he first came to NYC 9:43 - Personal histories with Phantom 19:55 - Story #1: Phantom and the infamous swoosh 28:18 - The pressures of playing the Phantom 33:14 - Story #2: Raoul and the cheeky bow 39:08 - The differences between Phantom and Raoul 43:14 - Story #3: Meeting his idol, Anthony Warlow 48:48 - Sharing a dressing room with Denzel Washington   Subscribe to WINMI and get Bonus Episodes   OR Make a one-time Donation to the podcast   Jeremy Stolle Has an Idea... The stamina of doing 8 shows a week is certainly something that every performer has to train for and be able to maintain, but there is also a stamina for auditioning. Going in, time and time again, to sing 32 bars or perform a monologue, or go through a scene with a reader or another actor. This takes preparation and constant readiness for whatever may come at you in the audition room. This especially true when it's a role that you have either done before or have auditioned for many times previously, you have bring a fresh energy to it each time. Well, in this week's audition story Jeremy talks about one of the many times he has auditioned for Gaston in Beauty and the Beast. Although this time he tried a different take on the character, with hilarious results. Our host Lewis checks in this week from the Home of the Blues, Memphis, Tennessee! We're recording this week's episode in the parking lot of Sun Studios. Sun Studios has produced some legendary, great music. Countless hits. Midterm elections were this week and all the news coverage of it has been people standing in line. Even though people are standing in line to vote, our host reminds you that you need to give people a reason to vote! One political party comes up with solutions they can't explain. The other political party wants to keep their good ideas a secret. It's important to vote. It matters. Lewis is sick of people saying that George Carlin didn't vote. How do you know that to be true? He could just be saying that because he's George and he is a comedian! But then again, voting probably did genuinely bother him a lot. Lewis had an extra day to spend some time in Memphis. If he's being honest, he ordered enough BBQ to feed a family of six. Also, if you're ever in Memphis, you need to visit the civil rights museum. It will be one of the most extraordinary experiences you can ever have. It's crazy that they don't want to teach about civil rights history in school. Kids need to learn about this.  Our host's next stops in his tour are in Georgia and North Carolina. As always, our host reminds us that we take care of each other. It's the most important thing we can do for one another.  This week's live rants were filmed at Austin City Limits at the Moody Theater in Austin, Texas and the Majestic Theater in Dallas, Texas.  For advertising opportunities email: advertise@thelaughbutton.com  SUBMIT RANTS TO LEWIS https://www.lewisblack.com/live Lewis' Grammy-nominated special, "Thanks For Risking Your Life" is available now! https://tlbrecords.lnk.to/LewisWE SUBSCRIBE TO THE RANTCAST https://www.lewisblacksrantcast.com https://thelaughbutton.podlink.to/Ran... Synopsis John Lennon was born on today's date in the year 1940, in Liverpool, England — during a German air raid on that city, as it happened. With three other young lads from Liverpool, Lennon would eventually become world-famous, courtesy of the band he helped formed in 1959 called the Beatles. The Beatles started out in a Liverpool nightclub called the Cavern, playing pop tunes of the day, but soon began performing original material of their own. Before disbanding in 1970, some recognizable elements of classical music were incorporated into some Beatles songs, including a string quartet, a Baroque trumpet, and even an orchestra. And it wasn't just a one-sided exchange: Leonard Bernstein played a Beatles song on one of his “Young People's Concerts” to demonstrate sonata form. Arthur Fiedler performed symphonic arrangements of Beatles tunes at his Boston Pops concerts. And decades after the Beatles disbanded, former member Paul McCartney began composing original chamber works and big concert hall pieces, including a semi-autobiographical “Liverpool Oratorio.” Not surprisingly, some young British and American composers coming of age in the 1960s and 70s credit the Beatles as an influence. One elegant set of solo guitar arrangements of Lennon-McCartney tunes even came from Japan, courtesy of the eminent Japanese composer (and Beatles fan) Toru Takemitsu. Only eight months into the COVID-19 pandemic, Michael Cogliano Sr. accepted a challenging leadership position in our community as president of Gettysburg WellSpan Hospital. Cogliano is a community man who can be spotted frying Oreos at Biglerville High School football games and who will strut his stuff on the Majestic Theater stage in January during the Dancing with the Local Stars show which supports the YWCA Gettysburg & Adams County and the Adams County Arts Council. He has held several positions throughout his 24-year WellSpan career, including vice president of operations, administer of clinical operations, administrative director of surgical and emergency services, supervisor of cardiac catheterization lab, and invasive cardiovascular technologist. Cogliano recently sat down with the Connection to discuss COVID-19, monkeypox, telehealth and other relevant topics for this month's Connection Podcast. “The past winter and spring were very challenging for everyone here,” Cogliano said. “I think we recovered well from the surge; however, the hospital has remained busy throughout the summer just with fewer COVID-19 patients.” Cogliano and his staff are excited to return to community activities. The hospital president recently chaired the American Heart Association Heart Walk, which raised about $100,000. Cogliano warns residents that even though the severity of COVID cases has lessened, the virus is still a concern. “I would encourage us all to continue the same precautions we are accustomed to,” he said.  Cogliano stressed COVID-19 and flu vaccines and the latest boosters are the best methods to prevent infection and illness. The hospital president said other health concerns, including mental health, are a big focus for WellSpan. He encouraged patients to use My Wellspan at www.wellspan.org to keep track of health records and make appointments. Cogliano is a user himself and trusts the site is a safe way to store sensitive information. Synopsis On today's date in 1964, a new musical called “Anyone Can Whistle” opened at Broadway's Majestic Theater. The book was by Arthur Laurents, with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. The show told the story of a town that's gone bankrupt because its only industry manufactured something that never wears out. To spark tourism, the town's Mayor fakes a miracle – water flowing from a rock – and when patients from a local mental hospital called the “Cookie Jar” escape and mix in with townspeople and tourists, chaos ensues. The only conventional thing about the new Sondheim-Laurent musical was the inclusion of a love story. The New York Daily News called the first act "joyously daffy," and the Journal-American reported that the opening night audience cheered several numbers. The New York Times, unfortunately, panned the new show, opening its review with this statement: "There is no law against saying something in a musical, but it's unconstitutional to omit imagination and wit." Ouch! It didn't help that the new Laurent-Sondheim musical's competition on Broadway that year included crowd pleasers like Hello, Dolly, Funny Girl, and Fiddler on the Roof. The show ran for just one week. But one person who liked the show happened to be a Columbia Record executive named Goddard Lieberson, who assembled the original cast the day after it closed to make an original cast recording that became something of a cult classic. Music Played in Today's Program Steven Sondheim (b. 1930) — Me and My Town, from Anyone can Whistle (Angela Lansbury; orchestra; Paul Gemignani, cond.) RCA Victor 60515

Synopsis On today's date in 1999, the Lyric Opera of Chicago premiered a new opera by the American composer William Bolcom, based on “A View from the Bridge,” a powerful play by Arthur Miller. Now, not all stage plays “translate” well into opera, as Bolcom was well aware: “In theater, you have the text and then below it you have the subtext,” said Bolcom. “In opera it is pretty much the opposite, the subtext is what you are really dealing with first and foremost: big, raw emotions, which are supported by the text. In fact, Miller's play, although set in Brooklyn in the 1950s, has often been likened to a Greek tragedy, a theatrical form in which the chorus plays an important role. Bolcom saw that as a real opportunity: "If you are going to do an opera from a play, it better have a dimension that the play doesn't. In a play, you can't have your chorus speak because it is financially prohibitive: as soon as the chorus opens up its mouth the price goes up because of actors' equity. So, naturally one of the great resources of opera houses is an opera chorus, a resource you CAN use much more easily." "See what it gets you" as hosts Bobby and Kristina discuss 1964's Anyone Can Whistle on episode seven of My Favorite Flop.   ABOUT ANYONE CAN WHISTLE Described by theater historian Ken Mandelbaum as "a satire on conformity and the insanity of the so-called sane," Anyone Can Whistle tells the story of an economically-depressed town whose corrupt Mayoress, in an attempt to draw tourists, decides to create a fake "miracle" - which draws the attention of Fay Apple, an emotionally inhibited nurse, a crowd of inmates from a local asylum called "The Cookie Jar," and a "doctor" with secrets of his own. The musical features a book by Arthur Laurents and music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. Following a tryout period in Philadelphia, Anyone Can Whistle opened at the Majestic Theater on Broadway on April 4, 1964 to widely varied reviews (including negative notices from the New York Times and the New York Herald Tribune). It closed after a run of 12 previews and 9 performances and in the decades since its closing, it has not been produced on the scale of other Sondheim musicals; notable productions include a 1995 concert version at Carnegie Hall, a pair of stagings in London and Los Angeles in 2003 that incorporated revisions, and a 2010 concert staging for the Encores! program at New York City Center. Its score, however, has become an acclaimed part of Sondheim's canon, and songs such as the title tune, "Everybody Says Don't", and "There Won't Be Trumpets" have been widely performed. The show is also known for marking the stage musical debut of Angela Lansbury.   Original Broadway Cast Angela Lansbury as Cora Hoover Hooper Lee Remick as Fay Apple Harry Guardino as J. This Podcast was originally published last summer. But the Farmers Market is now in full swing with enhanced hygiene in place so it seemed like a good to time to present it again. Please wear a mask and social distance when you are at the Farmers Market. The Adams County Farmers Market is at its best during the harvest season, and the vendors’ tables are now overflowing with produce. But in addition to hosting the Saturday morning market, the Adams County Farmers Market Association also sponsors many community and educational activities in the county. In this podcast I talk with Reza Djalal who has been the market manager since May 2018. Djalal is an Adams County native who grew up in Biglerville. He graduated from St. John’s College in Santa Fe, NM in 2015 with a BA in Philosophy and the History of Science and Mathematics. Djalal You can learn more about the farmers market at its website or Facebook page. Gettysburg Connection brings news, events, and opinions to Adams County residents. If you enjoy the podcast, please take a few seconds to support us by signing up for our weekly mailing list. The site is completely free of charge, but we do ask your help in sharing our content with other people in the community. Please, like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter. A transcription of the podcast follows: GC: Hi Reza, and welcome to the podcast. So you've been in your position as market manager of the Adams County Farmers Market Association for about a year now, and so I thought it might be a good time for you to share your thoughts about it. Can you talk a little bit about the Farmers Market Association? When did it start? Who founded it? And what's its mission? RD: Sure, So the Adams County Farmers Market Association is a 501c(6) nonprofit. It has a twofold mission, sort of.  One side of that mission is to help support businesses, especially small businesses. We want to help small farmers and ranchers and dairies thrive in the area in Adams County. On the other side of that mission is to increase food access and wellness for all residents and all community members. So we do a lot of programming that helps support both ends of that, namely, by operating a farmers’ market that offers a high reward, low risk environment for small businesses to kind of get their start as a platform to launch off into economic success. GC: Right.  So I want to come back and talk about all the many different programs that you have. But maybe you can tell us where the farmers’ market is located and when it's open and how late it's going to be open this year. RD: Sure. So we operate every Saturday morning between May through October from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. And we're set behind the Gettysburg Transit Center. We’re a couple yards away from the Majestic Theater down Carlisle Street. So, yeah, we're behind the transit center every Saturday morning. GC: Yeah, and what actually is sold at the market? I mean, I know there would be fruits and vegetables and fresh produce like that, but what else is there? RD: Uh, well, you know, we have a lot of the typical array of farmers’ market niche items. We have Ragged Edge Roasting Company with us, and they're pretty well known and have a great coffee product that people might know. We also have some baked-goods vendors. Robin's Nest does the vendor circuit in different locations. And we have a cool vendor called Sweet Rollers. They only sell cinnamon rolls. That's it. And it's kind of like a fundraising organization, and they try to raise money for a lot of different causes. But mainly they raise money to help low income families be able to afford after-school sports programs for their kids in elementary and middle school. But I think that that's really, really cool. So it's like we're helping them, and they're also nonprofit…a really nice symbiotic relationship where nonprofits were helping each other.

No two ways about it, episode 103 of our live weekly podcast was a lot of fun.  With our guests from The Darton Group as well as VoxVii / The Rack Show, we had no shortage of laughter, fun, and even some interesting viewpoints on the metro Detroit information technology scene, the local employment market, what people might want/need to do a little more of during their job search and more.  More importantly, we managed to pull off our show even though we'd had a Podcast Detroit open house for several hours leading up to it... Just like we always do, our first segment dove into the events, news, and stories that caught our attention over the past week. From the (in our opinion) whackjobs opening a storefront downtown to sell t-shirts for the unbelievable price range of $150-198 (no, that's not a typo) to all of this week's fun and excitement with the Windows 10 release, and then of course a touch on Jared from Subway's scandal now involving a 16 year old girl and the sad reality of the report indicating that the University of Phoenix nationally has a 7.3% graduation rate...but a 19% student loan default rate...and it's even worse than that here in the metro Detroit area...we had plenty of topics to keep us going through the first segment and doubling back in the fourth.  We also touched on our upcoming events at Hopcat and The Majestic Theater, Podcast Detroit going through a major growth spurt and the open house we'd held right before our show started and more. Segment two was all about the Darton Group (who graciously forgave yesterday's typo), a company from down in Charlotte, North Carolina looking to expand their business here in the metro Detroit area.  Clint and Rochelle were great guests with a solid sense of humor...but also with a lot of business knowledge and a firm belief that networking is the way to go to find the right talent...so you know we like them a lot.  They also have some words of wisdom for you metro Detroit job seekers, so make sure you listen in, and check them out at http://dartongroup.com/ For our third segment, we hopped into chatting with Lucas and Corey, two thirds of the team behind VoxVii studios and The Rack Show.  We met these guys earlier in the year at the Midwest Media Expo, had a blast, have kept in touch, and it was time to have them in to talk about their video podcast, their intentions on getting back to "normal" podcasting, why you should check them out and more.  Always a lot of laughs with these guys...even if it did wind up resulting in a challenge for a tag team wrestling match throwdown to take place...   ...so listen into the chat, and catch them at https://www.facebook.com/therackshow Segment four, as always, was a wrap up of earlier topics and digging a little more into the week's stories.  Photos from the night and more below. Our flashback to 1983 with episode 83 of our live, weekly broadcast has come and gone, and it was definitely a lot of fun. We were joined in-studio by a couple of recurring guests on our show, Steve Gaura from Arrow Strategies and Billy Strawter of Social Coop Media Detroit.  We talked about our Pink Slip Party this Thursday night, what Arrow's seeing in the jobs market, why companies build all of these splintered apps and more... Once our 1983 themed intro wrapped up, we dove into the news, events and stories that have caught our eyes over the past week. From our impending Pink Slip Party to us doubling down on events in April and throughout the rest of the year, we handled a little business first and foremost. Then we dove into the fun news that everything you say to Siri is recorded, packaged, sent back to the Apple mothership and sold off.  So that's awesome.  The new Hello Barbie dolls doing the exact same thing to your kids.  Hertz putting spycams in their rental cars...even if they say they haven't activated them.  Super PI day that happened this past Saturday.  And, of course, much more. In segment two, we dropped in with Steve Gaura from Arrow Strategies to talk about why they've been a sponsor of our Pink Slip Party events ever since...well, ever since we first started accepting sponsors, actually.  We talked about what they'll be looking for Thursday night, a recruiter's take on what you should expect, how you should act, and what you should be looking for at the event.  How to best prepare yourself and handle the interactions with everyone, and a good bit more.  Arrow Strategies can be found at http://arrowstrategies.com/, or, of course, at our event Thursday night. Our third segment dove in with Billy Strawter of Social Coop Media.  It's always great having Billy in, because he's one of the few people that can actually make us understand social media topics without wanting to kill people.  We had some great chats about why companies are building so many splintered apps these days...and the rather annoying trend of apps that aren't happy doing one thing really well, and find themselves sucking when they try to be all things to all people.  They handle clients all over the country, but especially if you're here in the metro Detroit area and trying to get a grip on your social media strategy and make sense of all the nonsense going on these days...we can't possibly recommend Billy and Social Coop Media enough to you.  Go check them out at http://socialcoopmedia.com/ As we always do, our fourth segment doubled back on some earlier topics to amplify things a bit, we covered a few more news stories from the past week, and then wrapped things up for the night. Come join us live and in person Thursday night at The Majestic Theater - looking forward to seeing everyone there!
