First we talked to director Stephen Soucy about his documentary “Merchant Ivory” that pulls back the curtain on the fascinating lives of filmmakers Ismail Merchant and James Ivory. Their unique partnership on and off the camera produced 43 groundbreaking films over 4 decades that left an indelible mark on the LGBTQ and arthouse cinema. The documentary features interviews with Vanessa Redgrave, Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant, Helena Bonham Carter and many others who were lucky enough to move in the orbit of Merchant and Ivory's fabulous filmmaking. Next we chatted with director Fawzia Mirza and producer Andria Wilson Mirza about their feature film “The Queen of My Dreams”. The film is about a Pakistani Canadian woman who has had a strained relationship with her parents since coming out as lesbian and undergoes an emotional journey after the sudden unexpected death of her father. Her grief plunges her into a Bollywood-style examination of her family's past and present. Then we talked with director Taylor James, actor Kanoa Goo and producer Katie White about their short film “ILY, BYE” about when an unemployed, down on her luck woman (Megan Stalter) gets a life-changing job opportunity but she can't seem to get her foot out of her mouth long enough to get her foot in the door.    Next we talked to Tyler C. Peterson about his short film “Stan Behavior” about a drag queen (Ginger Minj) embarking on a quest for better workplace rights but finds herself in a dicey situation when her new lawyer (Yvonne Zima) a tone-deaf straight woman is revealed to be a drag super stan. Then we talked with director Sarah McCarron and music producer Rascal Miles about their short film “The Bend” about a trans man migrating from Tennessee to Minneapolis who gets stranded in rural Wisconsin and encounters a fisherman. We then chatted with director Marco Calvani about his feature film “High Tide” that was shot in Provincetown about an undocumented Brazilian immigrant searching for purpose when he encounters Maurice creating a memorable tribute to love and loss. We concluded our conversation with veteran producer Christine Vachon who produced the 2023 Oscar nominated film “Past Lives” about what films she has coming down the pike. We also talked with all the filmmakers about their spin on our LGBTQ issues as we approach the crucial 2024 presidential election.    The Provincetown Film Society, Inc. Carencro Mayor Charlotte Stemmans Clavier joins Discover Lafayette to share her journey in business and politics. A life long resident of Carencro, Charlotte grew up in a political family. Both of her grandfathers served as police jurors for Lafayette Parish. Back in the day when political business was handled a bit more informally, and before open meeting laws, one of her granddads, Eddie Stemmans, would include her in political outings. Charlotte remembers "being the little girl sitting on an ice chest, that would go get them a beer. After watching it a little bit, I realized I wanted to do this! I've seen all sides of politics, the good, the bad, and the ugly. I always enjoyed it and knew I would run for public office." Pictured from left: Carencro Police Chief David Anderson, Mayor Charlotte Stemmans Clavier, along with City Council members Alfred Sinegal, Jordan Arceneaux, Danielle Caprito, Antoine Babineaux, Jr., and Taylor James. Charlotte graduated from Carencro High and three years later from Tulane University.  While in college, she worked as an intern for Jim Gelpi, the founder of The Alliance for Good Government. She loved the experience and it shaped her attitude in serving others at the highest level of integrity and fiscal responsibility. Studying at Tulane also shaped her and Charlotte recalled the challenging studies offered by the university with a demanding expectation that students master educational materials. With her experience of working in the family business, Stemmans, Inc. - The Horse Supply Specialists, Charlotte was used to hard work and says, "I went to work at 11, ran my first store at 12, so my idea of college was different." Today, Charlotte is President of Stemmans, located on Gloria Switch Road, and responsible for the day to day operations of this iconic, family-owned store, originally opened in 1968 as a tack shop by her parents, Don and Janet Stemmans. She has worked in the business for 35 years. Growing up in the horse industry has shaped Charlotte's life; she gives back to the industry by currently serving as Vice President of Louisiana Horsemen's Benevolent & Protective Association, which represents all racehorse owners and riders in the state. While Charlotte hasn't ridden a horse in years, she is the proud owner of racehorses and at our interview was looking forward to Evangeline Downs opening night on April 5, 2024. Charlotte served as mayor pro tempore of Carencro from 1999 until 2003, during the tenure of former Mayor Tommy Angelle. She was elected mayor in November 2022. "I love, love, love what I do. It's the perfect job for me. I have a great group of people that work with me. Carencro is a community on the grow. We're a blessed town. Many people are moving in, moving north, due to high insurance rates. There are 1400 homes in active development in the City of Carencro." With its rapid growth, there are many infrastructure needs to be addressed such as sewer plants, replacing old gas and water lines. Charlotte is also advocating for a new light to be installed by DOTD at the busy intersection of Ira and University Avenue. "I am proud to announce that we are beginning the next phase of replacing our old water lines and moving one step closer to Carencro's occasional brown water issues becoming a thing of the past. Thank you to our fantastic Water and Sewer Department and Fenstermaker and Associates for moving our city forward with top-tier water infrastructure." - Mayor Charlotte ClavierPosted by City of Carencro Government on Tuesday, April 2, 2024 News of the $8.9 million Louisiana Avenue extension from Butcher Switch Road to Gloria Switch Road, is exciting news for Carencro. Not only will this open up opportunities for development, but it will greatly assist commuter traffic. The project is expected to take a year or so to complete. The City of Carencro offers lots of fun activities for residents and visitors alike.

On a Mission Podcast

This week, we are on a mission with Taylor James for some real, frank, and honest discussions about the importance of open conversations surrounding mental health. We get brutally honest about our own experiences with mental health and the unspoken challenges people face when they reach out for support to no avail. The societal pressure we face to appear "put together" is real. In this week's episode, we discuss how to avoid the very real danger of comparing ourselves to others and the constant need for validation that we've been programmed to chase. Taylor's story is laced with tragedy, resilience, and inspiration. Now an award-winning podcaster, he uses his platform as a much-needed force for positivity. KEY TAKEAWAYS It's essential to have a support network that truly listens and validates your feelings. Taylor highlights the importance of finding the right people to talk to, as not everyone will provide the support needed. Sometimes, seeking help from professionals or helplines like Samaritans can be more beneficial. Comparing oneself to others and seeking validation from external sources can be detrimental to mental health. Taylor encourages individuals to focus on their own journey and give themselves what they need, rather than trying to impress or conform to societal expectations. Unsolicited advice can be unhelpful and even harmful. Sometimes, simply having someone listen without judgment can make a significant difference. Transparency and honesty about mental health struggles can be challenging, especially when one is seen as an advocate for positive mental health. BEST MOMENTS "I'm so tired of this kind of generation of thinking, like we have to impress people. I'm going to do what I need to do that makes me feel better." "I don't need to be told what to do. I just need to be told that in some shape or form I'm gonna be okay and what I'm feeling right now isn't going to last forever." Hey Family!!!! Today I am highlighting a young leader who is doing GREAT things in the City of Cleveland!!!! Taylor James is a 30-year-old youth leader (ELEVATE) at New Community Bible Fellowship in Cleveland Heights, OH. Taylor joins us today to discuss her call to ministry and her journey towards public teaching and leadership. Taylor also discusses the importance of intentional dating. Below are a few time stamps of interesting moments throughout the segment! Enjoy Part I today (February 19, 2023). 4:50 - IGNORING GOD'S CALL: Dysfunction that came into Taylor's life by not doing what God called me called her to do - produced unnecessary torment and warfare (similar to the story of Jonah in the Bible). 5:47 - PRUNING TO BEAR FRUIT: God had to “break" Taylor in order for me to be who he has called me to be now - prune me and work on my character (John 15:2). She went through seasons where she was isolated in order to bear the fruit you see in her life now. May this be hope to anyone who feels God is pruning (reduce the extent of (something) by removing superfluous or unwanted parts) them right now in order to produce his righteousness through them. 7:17 - HONEST HEALING: Taylor received true deliverance when she got real with God about her spiritual brokenness during this season of isolation. 8:24 - HEALING FROM SEXUAL BROKENNESS: Taylor's healing of sexual brokenness; confessional community (once she was honest with God, and then honest with her community she began to experience healing) … “I can't be celibate", I can't do it on my own” / “I don't agree” / Prayer: God, I need you to heal my heart and help to abstain by your power and not by my own flesh; check in with someone when you want to do something against GOD. 14:30 - OVERCOMING JUDGEMENT: What are the ways we can stop judging people for their struggles, and create atmospheres of confession and love for one another? Community of confession discussed in the Book of James and Galatians! Healing for one another. If you enjoyed this episode, join us next week for Part II, Peace!
