Die Meisten kennen Yann Tiersen als Komponist von Filmmusiken, wie „Die fabelhafte Welt der Amélie“. Doch damit ist er nicht wirklich glücklich. Tiersen über sein neues Album.
Émilie Tiersen (aka QUINQUIS) and her husband, Yann Tiersen are currently sailing along the coast on a truly unique summer tour. This week I spoke to Émilie about this special sailing trip on their wonderful boat, Ninnong, which set sailed from their home in Ushant to Ireland and then up to the beautiful Faroe Islands, which is where Émilie spoke to me from. The duo are performing a series of concerts, in various places on their route, meeting up with old friends and chatting with fans along the way We also discussed the recording of the latest QUINQUIS album, which came out last year. Émilie recorded the album with multi-talented musician and producer, Gareth Jones. For more information about Émilie and Yann's sailing tour check out the following websites: https://www.ninnog.com https://www.quinquismusic.com https://mute.com/artists/quinquis
From our friend and today's guest Daniel Gay "I chose Philip Glass' “Solo Piano” because it's the most transportive record I've ever heard. It's music for all seasons of life; it can be warm, cold, stark, ambitious, unrelenting, but more than anything it's constantly beautiful. Each track, each arpeggiated run. It's reference points have always resonated with me. Kafka, Ginsberg, the Dali Lama, Buddhism, social justice, anti-authority. For more than 25 years, this music has accompanied me through the births of my kids, deaths, degrees, jobs, marriage, love and loss, and I attribute some of its power to helping me quit alcohol and remain on a path of alcohol sobriety. It's mindful music, not in the “Life is Good” hippie way, but in the way that it centers me. It's classical music for punk rockers, or music for thinkers and dreamers. Glass won't physically be around much longer, but the next generation, guys like Richter, Tiersen, O'Halloran…they'll push the minimalist form forward and continue to inspire people to step out of their boxes, focus, and be conscious of the beauty of the world and my place in it."Enjoy the episode, and check out Daniel Gay's YouTube Channel!
YANN TIERSEN calls Arman from his studio for a conversation set amidst a blinkering of blue and orange lights from the sound dials, hard drives and synthesizers behind him. While he's a known legend of cinematic scoring, Tiersen insists that the best soundtrack is not necessarily a composed soundtrack - but using music. Referencing this proper “usage” of music in film, Tiersen points to the master Kubrick himself. Living close to nature is an important part of his life and his music. TIERSEN is the kind of artist who treasures the simple, sacred things, like life without the sound of constant motor engines, or owning a record or book he loves in its physical form because for him, it's “a piece of me.” Though Tiersen exudes a sense of peace in his speech and thought processes, he shares that there is a world of chaos at the core of his creative process. When he gets into the studio, he's inspired by PLAY and ‘MAKING TONS OF NOISE.' Reminding us that life really should be all about making noise and having fun, TIERSEN's humbling answer to Arman's final question brings even more importance to that message. Shortly after Arman asks: “if your life is a movie, what will play in the end credits?” To that TIERSEN responds: “Nothing. A sine wave.” Waving goodbye, we thank YANN for sharing a glimpse into his twinkling mind.

End of rue des Cascades by Tiersen
- you get the point - så HAR filmen faktisk noget at byde på også.

Our spotting session for Amélie is perhaps our most unique installment thus far. We endeavor to cover the entire soundtrack for the film, putting each piece in its time and place. Jeunet, Tiersen and the editorial team assembled a clever collection of 'needle drops' into a narratively compelling underscore. We progress track by track through Amélie's music, uncovering the spirit of the film and the soul of our heroine. From 40s era showtunes to carnival organs to club remixes to intimate original piano ballads, listening to the music of this film end to end is an aural delight. Breaking down each individual piece, we set the table for next week's full-length audio commentary. Today we continue our whimsical adventure through Yann Tiersen's music to Amélie. While much of the score originates from Tiersen's back catalogue, there is some exceptional original music we've yet to cover. Let's start with one of our very favorite pieces from the score, L'autre valse d'Amélie, a melodious delight emblematic of our heroine. We explore just how beautifully her two primary themes (both of them waltzes) embody the sun and moon of her persona. Next is one of the film's most recognized pieces, Comptine d'un autre été: L'après-midi. Breaking character somewhat from the rest of the score, this flowing piano ballad seems to reflect not the yesteryear of Amélie's fantasies, but the contemporary world she truly lives in. We close with another lovely selection composed specifically for the film, Le moulin. In an episode of many firsts we're thrilled to introduce our next film subject - Amélie. Yann Tiersen's irreplaceable score is brimming with charm and today we explore the film's central theme, La Valse d'Amélie (Amélie's Waltz). We study the musical features of the theme and discover what it suggests about the inner life of our film's heroine. Along the way we dive into the history of the Waltz in European musical culture and the legacy of the French Bal-musette tradition. Tiersen's score was uniquely constructed, ultimately including several pieces of music from his existing catalogue. This theme, along with a handful of others written specifically for the film, marked his first foray into cinema scoring and the result is something worthy of the canon of great film music. My little brother is in town visiting, and he is the sound designer for the Boston Ballet, and on Wednesday night (I think) we got obliterated on gin and had something of a musical duel; each taking turns on the stereo, me playing some of the weirder stuff I listen to and him playing bits of classical music. Honestly, it was fucking ace. As a DJ set it would have absolutely delighted me anyway, even if everyone else ended up fucking off, but nevertheless, that evening was what music fandom is really about for me. So this podcast isn't really a recreation by any means (we are far, far too sober and nothing like argumentative enough for starters) but I thought it would be nice to do a podcast along those lines. Personally, it's maybe not even as classical as I might personally have liked it to be, but never mind, I really like it. And, as usual, there is a correction to be made. We describe the them tune to Star Trek Deep Space Nine as Theme for the Common Man, and apparently it isn't that at all. What it is is heavily heavily borrowed from Aaron Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man. So the bit of classical music Ben describes hearing before we play that song must actually have been Fanfare for the Common Man, which only reminded him of the Deep Space Nine theme without actually being it. Whoops. Next time research before talking! 01. Mozart - Requiem in D Minor (02.40) 02. Yann Tiersen - La Lettre d'Explication (16.18) 03. The Flaming Lips - Watching the Planets (23.33) 04. Among the reasons for compiling these songs are my Mom’s love of the sound of the piano, a serene atmosphere for my resting boy, and the soundtrack for my contemplation during the wee hours of the morning. When you DJ, your musical imagination is full of clever segues. When you love music, you’re never without songs. When you play music for people’s enjoyment, your mind is on how you’ll bring together everybody’s jams, create a vibe and move the crowd. Within crafty DJs, daydreaming in stereo is a constant. With all of that going on in your mind all of the time, and, let’s face it, music’s allure just won’t allow you to turn it off, you need Peace & Quiet. When listening to solo piano music, at last, I’m not thinking about the next mix. My mind relaxes into a mode of appreciation. Piano is an essential musical instrument, a root in the world of sound. Whether at home, the church, or singing America the Beautiful in public school, we’ve all accompanied the piano. The piano has always stuck with me. Over two years, I listened to approximately 1,800 solo piano performances amid the realms of Classical and Jazz music. I’ve loved Jazz since I was a teen, I used to listen to it while hauling lumber or doing landscaping because I never knew when the songs would end and that helped to pass the time quickly. Ten 6-minute long Jazz songs, that’s an hour. I had a tape, the soundtrack to a film called ‘Round Midnight, starring Dexter Gordon, which was with me on the bus, the El (Philadelphia's subway), alone in my room at home, Pop’s car, everywhere all the time and on auto reverse. This 1986 film won the Academy Award for Best Music and Original Score. Herbie Hancock on piano, Dexter Gordon on tenor sax, Ron Carter on bass and Tony Williams on drums, John McLaughlin on guitar, Bobby Hutcherson on vibes, Wayne Shorter on saxes, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Cedar Walton on piano, Billy Higgins on drums, Pierre Michelot on bass, and Bobby McFerrin on vocals. Curious about what represents a standard in Jazz as a beautifully human genre featuring master musicians? Commence your exploration with ‘Round Midnight. On that soundtrack, Herbie Hancock and Bobby Hutcherson’s "Minuit Aux Champs-Elysées" was the song that drew my focus toward the musician’s playing. Since only piano and vibes, it was easier to hear Herbie and Bobby’s playing, and I could hear, because I knew that they were improvising, what seemed to me as their brains in motion. Thinking in the present and future while playing at same time is very attractive to my ears. Your ideas begin in your mind, in your imagination, and they are uniquely yours – you unbridled. This combination of Jazz and Classical pianists juxtaposes easy going compositions played to form and played freely. Each pianist is legendary and the performances of standards and their own compositions are exquisite. Play quietly and enjoy the excursions into their minds and yours.
