In the Wee Small Hours is often considered Sinatra's best work and arguably the first concept album. The "concept" is something along the lines of “I am awake at 3am and I am feeling deeply sad about a lost love.” And that's really it. Just when you think there couldn't possibly be any more songs about the nuances of that kind of misery, there are seven more. It's relentless, it's brutal, it borders on self-harm and it changed the way we all listen to albums forever. So many emotions, such beautiful music, so much history, such an enormous legacy. And yet, what is there to say? Sometimes it's best just to listen - not just to Sinatra, but to the people out there in the world, all with their own problems, who heard this and felt something. Jam Notes: Our yearly gig for the Duke Orthopaedic department holiday party. This is the best set list and the best put-together we have been, musically, in all the years we have been doing it. We really got organized on the set list and on the arrangements this year. Everybody played really well and there were really only one or two major mistakes. As usual, Ben had issues with his Zoom H4n batteries and so we only got part of the first set and started recording partway through the second set as well. Some of the songs are also partial recordings because the Zoom H4n ran out of batteries. Jam Notes: " "

The problem with icons is that they become shorthand for an era, a particular place and time. That's why the music of icons like Frank Sinatra (and many others we've covered on the show) need a little bit of exploration to understand why they're icons in the first place. Also, a furry friend makes a guest appearance. Make sure to find and follow us on IG @brothersinsong.
When we say we want to watch Mad Men on the moon, we mean it. That's right, it's time for another episode of the Mad Men Men podcast and this week we're saying goodbye to our good friend Salvatore Romano (Bryan Batt) and saying good early morning to the new jogger in Don's life. Here's hoping she has some endurance. In case this is your first time digging into Mad Men Men, our humble little baby podcast recaps Mad Men from the perspective of someone who hasn't watched the show before, someone who went through it once a long time ago, and a superfan who watches it excessively instead of having a functional social life. Matthew Weiner created Mad Men, which aired on AMC from 2007 to 2015. Scott Hornbacher directed this episode, “Wee Small Hours,” and Dahvi Waller and Matthew Weiner wrote the script. The show stars Jon Hamm, January Jones, Elisabeth Moss, Vincent Kartheiser, Christina Hendricks, John Slattery, Robert Morse, and many more. We chat about dreams. What place do they have in God's plan? Has God's use of dreams changed as the ages changed? Is God speaking individually to believers today? We segue from that concept into thoughts about our old nature and our new nature, the Holy Spirit and the holy spirit. We ponder whether we really had our stony hearts replaced with soft hearts.
We sometimes forget just how talented The Police - Sting, Stewart Copeland, Andy Summers - actually were. They arrived in the late-70's, merging elements of Reggae, New Wave & Punk. Their sound - simple, lean (bass, drums, guitar), well-produced - still sounds fresh, with songs like “Roxanne”, “Message in a Bottle”, and “Walking on the Moon”. We saw them live at the Hordern Pavilion back in 1980, in the days before digital light shows, when every single light can had a specific purpose – and what a show it was! Our "Album You Must Hear Before you Die" is Frank Sinatra's “In the Wee Small Hours”, a classic from the early LP era. Sinatra is a master, and a joy to listen to. The man himself was certain that many baby boomers were conceived to the sound of this album. Jeff tells us more about Mr Beast, and digital sampling of Beavis and Butt-Head. In this episode, Rob and Joël discuss "The Voice," Frank Sinatra, and his 1955 album, "In the Wee Small Hours."Arguably the first concept album, this was the first of its kind with its innovative format and its introspective tone on love and heartache. Through their respective experiences, Rob and Joël look at not only Sinatra's performance and vision, but also the arrangements, the history of the album's creation and some conceptual and anecdotal thoughts that the album raised for them.

W/C 19th September 2022 I am going to mention Only Murders in the Building again this week, and it just dawned on me that I should have called out the performance of Steve Martin. The whole cast is great, even the fairly wooden and monotonic Selena Gomez (a performance which shouldn't work but seems to fit just fine). But the real star for me is SM. In contrast to the rest of the what is going on around him, it's a fairly understated turn and although there is a lot of silliness it never strays too far in a way that other roles in the past have done. Think LA Story rather than The Three Amigos. And it got me thinking why we have never seen more of him in straight ahead dramatic roles, which is a pity. Stay safe. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j7Jfs9MY0hg (In The Wee Small Hours Of The Morning - Frank Sinatra) Therapy For Me (or TFM as I now refer to it) is a bit of an audio curiosity. It started out as a mechanism for me to clear my head, with the hope that by saying stuff out loud it would act as a little bit of self-help. It's remains loose in style, fluid in terms of content and raw - it's a one take, press record and see what happens, affair. #736 - David Martin The David Martin Interview is featured on The Paul Leslie Hour. Are you here? Okay! Everyone's here. It's The Paul Leslie Hour and you're welcome here. This is an interview from the archives with songwriter David Martin, known for being a part of the songwriting group of Arnold, Martin & Morrow. Now… David Martin lives and breathes the songs. Chances are, you've heard something David Martin wrote. His songs have sold over 26 million records around the world, but all stories have a beginning. For the British singer-songwriter, he began his career as a member of the group Butterscotch on RCA Records. Soon after, he formed a songwriting partnership with Chris Arnold and Geoff Morrow. The partnership resulted in many the composition of many songs recorded by the true legends of recorded music, including Cliff Richard, Wayne Newton, Dusty Springfield, Cilla Black, and Mama Cass. The legendary Elvis Presley recorded four of their songs: “Let's Be Friends,” “A Little Bit of Green,” “Sweet Angeline” and “This is the Story.” Quick side note, how many of you are planning on seeing the new movie simply entitled “ELVIS” releasing on June 24th? We can't wait… Now, one of the songs David Martin wrote has brought many smiles to the world. David Martin's song “Can't Smile Without You” would become a pop standard and worldwide hit after being recorded by Barry Manilow. Manilow was not the first, nor the last artist to record the song. The Carpenters, Engelbert Humperdinck, Vic Damone, Andy Williams, Gino Cunico and others would perform and record their own versions. The song has been performed countless times in concert, been featured in motion pictures. The song earned Martin three BMI awards for over 3 million airplays. Although HE continues to write songs, he is still very much a singer. He has a great admiration for the great songwriters of the American Songbook, those lyricists and composers who wrote the standards: Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Harold Arlen, Johnny Mercer and Sammy Cahn. It is his love for these American classics that resulted in his album “Silky Smooth Moments.” Accompanied by the Terry Coffey Trio, David Martin sings standards like “I'll Be Seeing You” and “In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning,” and one written by David Martin himself. It's a beautiful gesture from David Martin. Although he has accomplished so much with his own songs, he pays tribute to the great songwriters who came before him. We invite you into the world and passion of David Martin, where songs with great messages never die. They endure. If you get a moment, perhaps you'll help us out. Just go to thepaulleslie.com/support And we thank you! Now we present our interview with a lovely man, music's own David Martin. Very special guest Tim Rebers discusses Frank Sinatra's 1955 album "In the Wee Small Hours", which is the inaugural entry for new theme "Music Recorded Before 1955". Jake and Charlie listen to it and discuss in tandem as well, but are frankly not as knowledgable and charming as Tim, so they resort to crooning sad sack tunes about watching the breath they breathe from their lungs on a cold day in January that's enough past Christmas to feel bittersweetly about it, but also far enough from spring that the frigid air burns not just their lungs and nose but also their yet-thawed hearts. They think it's a metaphor?

Our guest today is one Jared Saltiel.Jared is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist based in Brooklyn, NY. Always a clever lyricist and imaginative storyteller, Saltiel's rich orchestrations elevate his musical narratives with cinematic overtones. As lead singer and songwriter of Ann Arbor, Michigan pop/rock band The Dirty Birds, he released his debut album How the Cause Became the Cure in 2009. After moving to Brooklyn NY, he launched his solo career, releasing two interconnected full-length albums of lushly orchestrated, "magical realist" story-songs: The Light Within in 2013, and Out of Clay in 2018. His follow-up One More Revelation was a return to more conventional songwriting and contemporary folk-rock aesthetics. With his new EP No Heroes, Saltiel channels the zeitgeist with emotional intelligence and evocative production. As a producer and arranger, he has worked with a variety of musicians, including KAYE, Bell the Band, Cassidy Andrews, Lee Reit, and his brother Jason Saltiel. And as the co-creator of satirical slasher-comedy musical South by South Death, and the composer of Amina Henry's original play Hunter John & Jane, his theatrical work has been covered in the New York Times, The Village Voice, and TimeOut. For our conversation today, we are going to be discussing In the Wee Small Hours, which is the ninth studio album by “The Chairman of the Board.” Of course, we are referring to Frank Sinatra. Tony Oppedisano joins us to talk about his book "Sinatra and Me: In the Wee Small Hours." Oppedisano was Sinatra's closest confidant for the last decade of his life and the book delivers an intimate portrait of Ol' Blue Eyes.
Leah McFall reviews Sinatra and Me: in the wee small hours by Tony Oppedisano, published by Simon and Schuster. Leah says "Inevitably respectful and at times, reverential, this memoir by a confidante lends insight into the older Sinatra - a still-powerful but at times unhappy man, who relied heavily on an entourage of fixers and helpers. Also a portrait of a bygone twentieth-century America, of tuxedoed men in jazz clubs with Brylcreemed hair and pinky rings, who circled Sinatra and tended the flame of his celebrity until the end."
Doug Miles talks with Tony Oppedisano about his book “Sinatra and Me: In the Wee Small Hours” on “Talk Across America”. Tony was Frank's road manager for many years. He also managed Don Rickles and Deana Martin. Book link available at www.dougmilesmedia.com.

Its the holiday season, and even though the world is on fire, there is still one holiday tradition that we can practice: throwing on some Frank Sinatra and sipping martinis next to the Christmas tree. We've heard your croons and we're covering Sinatra again, but this time he has a little more pep in his step. As a followup to "In the Wee Small Hours," "Songs for Swingin' Lovers" could not be more different in tone. Every song is celebrating being in love or a fun, cautionary tale about the struggles of being in a relationship. This album continues Frank Sinatra's return with his Capitol Records years with help from his musical companion, composer Nelson Riddle. Join, Brad, Jon, Dave, and Trevor as they get loose and drink up the swing! NEXT WEEK: Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral (with special guest The Daughter of Lilith!) When Frank Sinatra released "Into the Wee Small Hours" in 1955, he changed the trajectory of American popular music in a big way. Un comentario acerca del legendario álbum de Frank Sinatra "In The Wee Small Hours " con motivo de su 65 aniversario.
[JON's PICK] Frank Sinatra is an artist that is very much embedded in the fabric of American Pop music. From his various roles in movies to his iconic crooning voice, Sinatra has made himself into a household name. But his career wasn't without its woes. After the initial Sinatra-mania that occurred during World War II, there was a gradual slump that he fell into for 6 years before making his big comeback with 1953's film "From Here to Eternity." The next few years showed a marked increase in his success, and in 1956, he decided to make what is thought to be the first recorded concept album with "In the Wee Small Hours." With it's melancholy mood and songs of longing, this album really showcases Frank's immense range and compositions that just aren't made anymore the same way. So please, sit back, sip a martini, and let Frank calm your nerves. Joined by Brad LeBaron, Dave Gallagher, Jon Acker, & Scott Westley. Here are once again with the fabulous Nerds for the weekly episode of hijinks and merriment. This week we look at topics that will hopefully entertain you, perhaps educate you, perchance even make you laugh. As usual we have our three Nerds, idiots, nutjobs, wackjobs, funny farm contenders, or as we like to say, your hosts. Bucky, Professor and the DJ. Bucky is our slightly older, kind of grumpy Nerd, who dislikes Mumble rappers, reality TV and generally stupidity. Professor our younger Nerd who likes gaming, long walks to the camp fire, and his Switch when on the bus. Last but not least, we have the DJ, the resident Droid that no one is looking for, who likes anime, games and laughing. First topic up this week is about some new illustrated novels, or omics, from the Firefly franchise. The DJ is challenged to finally watch the series to help him discover his inner Browncoat, will he be brave enough to walk down the street in a hat like that and show he aint afraid of nothing? We will find out, but by my pretty blue bonnet if he doesn’t we will aim to misbehave and cause mischief. Next up we look at the stress and traumatic conditions developers are suffering through to bring us new games. With reports of people developing PTSD, and hiding this fact so they can get jobs. This is seriously messed up, what these people are going through is downright wrong and needs to be looked at. Also Buck has a rant about the need to look after each other because he is sick and tired of morons putting profit before people. Last up Buck brings us an article about Rainbows. No, he hasn’t become a hippie or something drastic. He just felt we needed to take a moment and look around us and admire the simple things, you know, kind of like smell the roses and noticed the politicians as people (we think they are, but don’t hold us to that – Ed.). So we have 20 facts about rainbows and one of which is that the Greeks thought there were only three colours in the rainbow. We follow this with the usual look at the games we have been playing this week and give you a run down on them. Concluding with the episode with the regular Shout outs, remembrances, birthdays and events for the week that we all love. As always, take care of each other and stay hydrated.EPISODE NOTES:Firefly comics - https://comicbook.com/comics/2019/05/13/firefly-the-sting-joss-whedon-boom-studios/MK 11 & PTSD - https://www.kotaku.com.au/2019/05/id-have-these-extremely-graphic-dreams-what-its-like-to-work-on-ultra-violent-games-like-mortal-kombat-11/Rainbows - http://discovermagazine.com/2019/may/20-things-you-didnt-know-about--rainbowsGames currently playingProfessor – Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead - https://cataclysmdda.org/ Buck – Monster Truck Drive - https://store.steampowered.com/app/847870/Monster_Truck_Drive/DJ – Dota 2 - https://store.steampowered.com/app/570/Dota_2/Other topics discussedChanges to Santa Clarita Diet- https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/santa-clarita-diet-creator-explains-season-3-talks-season-4-1198429Ed Boon’s take on fatalities- https://www.businessinsider.com.au/mortal-kombat-creator-ed-boon-explains-how-new-fatalities-are-made-2019-3?r=US&IR=TFacebook content moderators having PTSD- https://futurism.com/the-byte/facebook-content-moderators-lawsuit-ptsdGrumpy Cat (internet personality)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grumpy_CatAll Dogs gone to Heaven (1989 film)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_Dogs_Go_to_HeavenLinguistic relativity and the colour naming- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linguistic_relativity_and_the_color_naming_debateChromatic aberration - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chromatic_aberrationPot of gold at the end of the rainbow- http://luckyireland.com/the-origin-of-a-pot-of-gold-at-the-end-of-the-rainbow/Minecraft Earth (mobile game)- https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/earthDota 2 New Character: Mars - Character bio - https://dota2.gamepedia.com/Mars- Mars’ character design - https://steamcdn-a.akamaihd.net/apps/dota2/images/mars/hero_mars93fd33s5.jpgShadow of the Colossus (2006 game)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shadow_of_the_ColossusTrials Fusion (2014 game)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trials_FusionStunt Car Arena (arcade game)- http://www.arcadespot.com/game/stunt-car-arena/Millionaire’s advice to young people – stop spending smashed avocados - https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2017/may/15/australian-millionaire-millennials-avocado-toast-houseColorectal Cancer also known as colon cancer- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colorectal_cancerDiamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diamond_Jubilee_of_Elizabeth_IIQueen Victoria- Bio - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen_Victoria- Queen Victoria with her grandchildren and other guests - https://images.immediate.co.uk/volatile/sites/7/2018/01/Queen_victoria_family-fd7d69f.jpg?quality=90&resize=768,574Stevie Wonder catches microphone stand- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUgngvsWLlECarrie Fisher roasts George Lucas- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZ97s396kb0Mark Zuckerberg will eat meat he kills- https://www.huffingtonpost.com.au/2017/07/13/mark-zuckerberg-will-only-eat-meat-he-kills-himself_a_23027199/Apple loses money than the value of Facebook- https://www.businessinsider.com.au/apples-market-cap-falls-by-450-billion-more-than-the-value-of-facebook-2019-1?r=US&IR=TWalt Disney - Bio and urban myth on Walt’s body is frozen - https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walt_Disney- Human bones in Disneyland - https://collinsrace1.wordpress.com/2018/10/29/are-there-human-bones-at-disney-parks/Elvis Lives (That’s Not Canon Podcast)- https://thatsnotcanon.com/elvislivespodcastCaptain Jack Sparrow (Pirates of The Caribbean character)- https://pirates.fandom.com/wiki/Jack_SparrowHenry Sutton (Australian Inventor)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Sutton_(inventor) Shoutouts7 May 1999 - The Mummy opened and grossed $43 million in 3,210 theatres in the United States on its opening weekend. - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mummy_(1999_film)14 May 1796 - English country doctor Edward Jenner administers the first inoculation against smallpox, using cowpox pus, in Berkeley, Gloucestershire - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_JennerRemembrances11 May 2019 – Peggy Lipton, American actress, model, and singer. He is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, having sold more than 150 million records worldwide. Born to Italian immigrants in Hoboken, New Jersey, Sinatra began his musical career in the swing era with bandleaders Harry James and Tommy Dorsey. Sinatra found success as a solo artist after he signed with Columbia Records in 1943, becoming the idol of the "bobby soxers". He released his debut album, The Voice of Frank Sinatra, in 1946. Sinatra's professional career had stalled by the early 1950s, and he turned to Las Vegas, where he became one of its best known residency performers as part of the Rat Pack. After releasing Sinatra at the Sands, recorded at the Sands Hotel and Casino in Vegas with frequent collaborator Count Basie in early 1966, the following year he recorded one of his most famous collaborations with Tom Jobim, the album Francis Albert Sinatra & Antonio Carlos Jobim. It was followed by 1968'sFrancis A. & Edward K. with Duke Ellington. Sinatra retired for the first time in 1971, but came out of retirement two years later and recorded several albums and resumed performing at Caesars Palace, and reached success in 1980 with "New York, New York". Using his Las Vegas shows as a home base, he toured both within the United States and internationally until shortly before his death in 1998. Sinatra forged a highly successful career as a film actor. After winning an Academy Award for From Here to Eternity, he starred in The Man with the Golden Arm, and received critical acclaim for his performance in The Manchurian Candidate. He appeared in various musicals such as On the Town, Guys and Dolls, High Society, and Pal Joey, winning another Golden Globe for the latter. Toward the end of his career, he became associated with playing detectives, including the title character in Tony Rome. Sinatra would later receive the Golden Globe Cecil B. DeMille Award in 1971. On television, The Frank Sinatra Show began on ABC in 1950, and he continued to make appearances on television throughout the 1950s and 1960s. In crime, the FBI investigated Sinatra and his alleged relationship with the Mafia. He was honored at the Kennedy Center Honors in 1983, was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Ronald Reagan in 1985, and the Congressional Gold Medal in 1997. He led Labor to victory three more times, in 1984, 1987 and 1990, making him the most electorally successful Labor Leader. The Hawke Government created Medicare and Landcare, brokered the Prices and Incomes Accord, established APEC, floated the Australian dollar, deregulated the financial sector, introduced the Family Assistance Scheme, announced "Advance Australia Fair" as the official national anthem, initiated superannuation pension schemes for all workers and oversaw passage of the Australia Act that removed all remaining jurisdiction by the United Kingdom from Australia. Hawke remains Labor's longest-serving prime minister, Australia's third-longest-serving Prime Minister and, until his death at the age of 89, Hawke was the oldest living former Australian Prime Minister. Hawke is the only Australian Prime Minister to be born in South Australia, and the only one raised and educated in Western Australia. He also held a world record for beer drinking; he downed 2 1⁄2 imperial pints (1.4 l)—equivalent to a yard of ale—from a sconce pot in 11 seconds as part of a college penalty. He died at 89 in Northbridge, New South Wales. - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_HawkeFamous Birthdays13 May 1950 - Stevie Wonder, American singer, songwriter, musician, record producer, and multi-instrumentalist. ‘Rockhistorier’ forkæler lytterne med en klynge forgyldte evergreens, skrevet af folk som Cole Porter, Gershwin-brødrene og Irving Berlin, sunget af mesteren selv.Frank Sinatras karriere falder i flere stadier. Playliste: I Get a Kick Out of You (Cole Porter) (1954) A Foggy Day (George & Ira Gershwin) (1954) Just One of Those Things (Cole Porter) (1954) Get Happy (Harold Arlen, Ted Koehler) (1954) In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning (David Mann, Bob Hilliard) (1955) It Never Entered My Mind (Richard Rodgers, Lorenz Hart) (1955) I’ve Got You under My Skin (Cole Porter) (1956) Old Devil Moon (Burton Lane, E.Y. ”Yip” Harburg (1956) Don’t Like Goodbyes (Harold Arlen, Truman Capote) (1957) I Got It Bad (And That Ain’t Good) (Duke Ellington, Paul Francis Webster) (1957) Autumn Leaves (Jacques Prévert, Johnny Mercer, Joseph Kosma) (1957) Lonely Town (Leonard Bernstein, Betty Comden, Adolph Green) (1957) Come Fly with Me (Sammy Cahn, Jimmy Van Heusen) (1958) Only the Lonely (Sammy Cahn, Jimmy Van Heusen) (1958) One for My Baby (And One More for the Road) (Harold Arlen, Johnny Mercer) (1958) Something’s Gotta Give (Johnny Mercer) (1959) Here’s That Rainy Day (Johnny Burke, Jimmy Van Heusen) (1959) How Deep Is the Ocean (Irving Berlin) (1960) On the Sunny Side of the Street (Jimmy McHugh, Dorothy Fields) (1961) September Song (Kurt Weill, Maxwell Anderson) (1962)Glædelig jul og godt nytår fra ‘Rockhistorier', vi er tilbage tirsdag d. 8.1.2019.

This week we crack the 50’s with Frank Sinatra’s ode to lost love In the Wee Small Hours. As I suspected going in, it was way too easy to get caught up in the myth of Frank Sinatra, and it took a lot of concentration to stay on task and discuss the actual album. But let me tell you, we did it. We got it done. I think you would have expected nothing less than the literal and minimal accomplishment of what we are supposed to do. ### Coming Up ### We steer back into comedy in celebration of The Moontower Comedy Festival, and we have JT Habersaat a REAL LIFE COMEDIAN sit in with us as we discuss Kyle Kinane’s Whiskey Icarus while we drink REAL LIFE WHISKEY. So yeah, should be fun.
This week, we spend some time getting to know chaos. Both in the body of The Yeah Yeah Yeahs Fever to Tell, and in Mark’s garage. Both an existential and recorded. But damn, sometimes I think you need to unravel a little bit so you can feel alive! Sometimes you need to stare into a yawning chasm in order to appreciate feeling alive. I should know, cause I felt a little more alive after recording this week’s show. ### A Few Minutes With ### Also, there’s some Blink 182 and Sarah Jaffe. ### Coming Up ### The Chairman stops by. We review “In the Wee Small Hours” by Frank Sinatra. We’ll finally get into the 1950’s. So don’t miss that shit. Laterz…

Among the reasons for compiling these songs are my Mom’s love of the sound of the piano, a serene atmosphere for my resting boy, and the soundtrack for my contemplation during the wee hours of the morning. When you DJ, your musical imagination is full of clever segues. When you love music, you’re never without songs. When you play music for people’s enjoyment, your mind is on how you’ll bring together everybody’s jams, create a vibe and move the crowd. Within crafty DJs, daydreaming in stereo is a constant. With all of that going on in your mind all of the time, and, let’s face it, music’s allure just won’t allow you to turn it off, you need Peace & Quiet. When listening to solo piano music, at last, I’m not thinking about the next mix. My mind relaxes into a mode of appreciation. Piano is an essential musical instrument, a root in the world of sound. Whether at home, the church, or singing America the Beautiful in public school, we’ve all accompanied the piano. The piano has always stuck with me. Over two years, I listened to approximately 1,800 solo piano performances amid the realms of Classical and Jazz music. I’ve loved Jazz since I was a teen, I used to listen to it while hauling lumber or doing landscaping because I never knew when the songs would end and that helped to pass the time quickly. Ten 6-minute long Jazz songs, that’s an hour. I had a tape, the soundtrack to a film called ‘Round Midnight, starring Dexter Gordon, which was with me on the bus, the El (Philadelphia's subway), alone in my room at home, Pop’s car, everywhere all the time and on auto reverse. This 1986 film won the Academy Award for Best Music and Original Score. Herbie Hancock on piano, Dexter Gordon on tenor sax, Ron Carter on bass and Tony Williams on drums, John McLaughlin on guitar, Bobby Hutcherson on vibes, Wayne Shorter on saxes, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Cedar Walton on piano, Billy Higgins on drums, Pierre Michelot on bass, and Bobby McFerrin on vocals. Curious about what represents a standard in Jazz as a beautifully human genre featuring master musicians? Commence your exploration with ‘Round Midnight. On that soundtrack, Herbie Hancock and Bobby Hutcherson’s "Minuit Aux Champs-Elysées" was the song that drew my focus toward the musician’s playing. Since only piano and vibes, it was easier to hear Herbie and Bobby’s playing, and I could hear, because I knew that they were improvising, what seemed to me as their brains in motion. Thinking in the present and future while playing at same time is very attractive to my ears. Your ideas begin in your mind, in your imagination, and they are uniquely yours – you unbridled. This combination of Jazz and Classical pianists juxtaposes easy going compositions played to form and played freely. Each pianist is legendary and the performances of standards and their own compositions are exquisite. Play quietly and enjoy the excursions into their minds and yours. In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning, Paul posts the latest SaintCast. We review the new American TV series called "3 lbs." about the "seat of the soul", the human brain. The diocesan phase for the cause for canonization of Albino Luciani, Pope John Paul I, has been forwarded to the Vatican. We include a prayer for his intercession. News of a medical miracle attributed to his intercession in southern Italy. What is the Tau Cross of St. Francis? Tune in for the answer. Check your closets for any pieces of Renaissance art. A British citizen did and found 2 works of Blessed Fra Angelico, worth over 2 million pounds! We tell the story. A bit of a trick question on last week's St. Jeopardy, but several international listeners correctly named Mother Frances Xavier Cabrini as the first American citizen to be canonized. Please continue to pray for the success of the SQPN fund drive. Consider sponsoring a SaintCast for someone you love or your own special patron Saint.
