Movie of the Year: 1996That Thing You Do (feat. contest winner Matthew Dewey!)Exploring That Thing You Do! – The Ultimate Feel-Good Rock and Roll MovieOn this episode of Movie of the Year, we dive deep into That Thing You Do!, the 1996 rock and roll movie that perfectly captures the meteoric rise of a one-hit-wonder. Directed by Tom Hanks, this film combines infectious energy, a toe-tapping original soundtrack, and an affectionate tribute to the music industry of the 1960s. Whether you're a fan of classic rock, catchy pop hits, or uplifting stories about bands making it big, this episode is a must-listen.That Thing You Do! – A Rock and Roll Movie with Unforgettable Original MusicFew films capture the spirit of an era as effortlessly as TTYD! does with its incredible original music. We break down how the title track, written by Adam Schlesinger, became a real-world hit, perfectly channeling the British Invasion-inspired sound that defined the 1960s. This episode examines the songwriting, standout performances, and how The Wonders (or the “Oneders”) created a fictional song that still resonates decades later. Why That Thing You Do! is the Ultimate Boomer Nostalgia TripBeyond being a fantastic rock and roll movie, TTYD!is also a prime example of what we call “boomer porn.” The film paints an idealized version of 1960s rock history, celebrating a time when bands could skyrocket to fame on sheer talent, drive, and a little bit of luck. We discuss how the movie plays into baby boomer nostalgia, romanticizing an era that felt innocent, exciting, and full of musical possibilities. Does it succeed in capturing the magic, or does it lean too heavily into nostalgia? How That Thing You Do! Still Rocks the Movie World TodayDecades later, TTYD! remains one of the most endearing rock and roll movies ever made. We discuss its lasting impact, from the performances of Tom Everett Scott, Liv Tyler, and Steve Zahn to the way it continues to resonate with new generations of movie lovers and music fans. Plus, we debate where it stands among the greatest music movies of all time.Tune In to the Movie of the Year Podcast for the Full That Thing You Do! BreakdownJoin us for this nostalgic, music-filled ride as we celebrate TTYD! and analyze what makes it a timeless rock and roll movie. This week, we're cracking open the vault and dissecting Ben Younger's groundbreaking film, “Boiler Room,” on its 25th anniversary. More than just a flashy depiction of Wall Street greed, “Boiler Room” offered a starkly realistic look at the pressure-cooker environment of a pump-and-dump brokerage. We'll analyze Younger's directorial choices, Giovanni Ribisi's electrifying performance, and Vin Diesel's memorable supporting role. We'll also discuss the film's impact on the careers of Nia Long, Ben Affleck, Nicky Katt, Scott Caan, Tom Everett Scott, Ron Rifkin, and more! Joining us for his discussion is Paul of The Review Review Podcast who is on board to offer up some compelling insight on a film that he chose for us to deep dive as the film crosses this major milestone. Join us as we explore the film and why we think it should be allowed to stand up proudly alongside similar films of the genre that are much more well known. From its commentary on ambition, ethics, and the pursuit of the American Dream, “Boiler Room” is a film everyone should get familiar with.Links For Guests: The Review Review PodcastWhere To Watch Boiler Room
You might remember Tom Everett Scott from That Thing You Do, but we think he really hit his stride when he was temporarily a werewolf in the capital of France. This is one of those 90s movies that really shouldn't have been made. Lucky for you that it was so bad that we still ended up having plenty to say about it. Mikey had the unfortunate experience of seeing this in the theater, but in 1997 we were really spoiled for choice at the cinema each week. It wouldn't be a true exploration of 90s movies if we didn't talk about the duds from time to time. While I wasn't a fan of this hack job of a script that wasted some talented actors, we at least got a good soundtrack. If you watched that BUSH music video for "Mouth" you basically saw the movie. We talk about how Julie Delpy only did the film to pay for her rent, the awkward performance of Tom Everett Scott, and how Julie Bowen had the best part in the entire film. Also, we read some funny Letterboxd reviews. The rise and fall of the one-hit Wonders is packed with chart-topping performances and is a platinum record in our books! This week we're fangirling over 1996's “That Thing You Do”, with Tom Hanks doing triple duty as director, writer and co-star, Steve Zahn running away with the movie, Tom Everett Scott appreciating jazz, Charlize Theron, Obba Babatunde, Rita Wilson, Alex Rocco, Chris Isaak, Kevin Pollack and even Bryan Cranston making a meal out of a cameo. At the heart of it all is Liv Tyler's Faye, that brilliant soundtrack, and the continually missed opportunity to adapt this as a musical. To close out the "Musicians on Film" cycle, Julian, Madeline and Emilio dig into the work of ace songwriter Adam Schlesinger, focusing on catchy pop songs he penned for three films - 'That Thing You Do!' (1996), 'Josie and the Pussycats' (2001), and 'Music and Lyrics' (2007). Emilio and Julian break out guitars to point out some of the little details from early 60s rock n'roll and beyond that made their way into "That Thing You Do!", the irrepressible hit single from the movie of the same name. The trio gets into how 'Josie and the Pussycats', and by extension Schlesinger's contribution "Pretend to Be Nice", both sends up the early 2000s music pop landscape and predicts the female punk pop explosion that was around the corner. And the group gets into what works, and what doesn't work as well, in the execution of "Way Back Into Love", the song at the center of 'Music and Lyrics'. All the while, discussions about the movies themselves supplement a lively conversation about Schlesinger and his most enduring cinematic bangers. If you enjoy our podcast, please rate and review us on your podcast platform of choice. In this thing, Tom Everett Scott pays Andy, who meets a lady while bungee jumping from the Eiffel tower and instantly falls in love with her. But there's only one problem - she's a werewolf! New York-based musician and America's Sweetheart Nick Miller joins to discuss the underseen 150-minute Extended Cut of Tom Hanks's directorial debut, 'That Thing You Do!'. It's a meandering, expansive version of the film that takes the original cut's effervescent (if slight) shot of pop nostalgia and, at its best, aims for comparisons to great surveyors of cinematic Americana like Robert Altman & Jonathan Demme (who serves as producer on this film). We discuss the two versions of the film, their differences, and how the Extended Cut showcases even further Tom Hanks's singular knowledge of the era and its musical landscape. Then, we talk about the eponymous tune, an infectious earworm written by the late Adam Schlesinger which took on a life of its own as a charting hit single and was nominated for the Best Original Song Oscar in 1997. We also discuss the film as part and parcel with Tom Hanks's decade-long fixation with postwar America and the Greatest Generation's sense of national purpose, how the movie gets right many of the intricacies of songwriting and band dynamics, and make a plea to the 300+ artists (including Squeeze and They Might Be Giants) who submitted versions of "That Thing You Do!" to finally release their recordings. Tom Hanks is known as a talented actor and producer, but once he wrote and directed a well received period piece about a very archetypal band with a number one single. So to talk about That Thing You Do, Case and Sam are joined by Jukebox Vertigo's Keith Lehtinen for a conversation that spans both a theatrical and director's cut and revels in the class rock and pop homages of the film!
Flashback Episode of The Father Time Podcast with Jamie KalerTom Everett Scott was born and raised in East Bridgewater, Massachusetts, the third of four children of Cynthia (Pierce), an insurance saleswoman, and William Joseph Scott, who was a civil engineer. Tom spent his childhood in a "nice house in the woods", with a pond nearby, canoeing and camping. He acted in high school plays, but Tom planned to quit acting, and take a more serious look at the world. So, he enrolled in communications at Syracuse University in 1988. During his sophomore year he says "I went down to the theater and saw everything going on-people jumping around being idiots-and I thought, 'This is my home. This is where I should be.'" So, Tom switched his major to drama, and upon graduating, he moved to New York City. There, he waited tables, and eventually founded a theater company with 3 college buddies that they named "aTheaterco". From there, you probably know the rest. That Thing You Do, An American Werewolf in Paris, Boiler Room, ER, Southland, and La La Land are just a taste of his numerous credits. And now he is the foil to Andrea Savage on her hit TV show, "I'm Sorry" on TruTV. Tom is the proud father of two kids and talks openly about the joys and perils of raising kids today. And yes, he's as nice as you think he is.You can catch more of Tom Everett Scott at: https://www.instagram.com/tomeverettscott/and on TikTok at:http://www.tiktok.com/@tomeverettscottofficialYou can catch The Parent's Lounge live every Tuesday Night 10pm EST/7pm PST at:https://www.facebook.com/theparentslounge#theparentslounge #tomeverettscott #thatthingyoudo #anamericanwerewolfinparis #parentingpodcast #jamiekaler #jasongowin #katemulligan #comedians #parentingadvice #funnyparents #hilarious #cohosts #boilerroom #improv #ER #dadlife #standupcomedy #parentinghumorJamie Kaler's Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/jamiekaler/Jason Gowin's Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/jasongowin/Kate Mulligan's Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/katestmomever/The Parent's Lounge TikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@theparentsloungeshow

Welcome to Episode 3 of BULLSHITTERY Podcast! Look at you, supporting this chaotic artist by listening to her chaotic podcast!? Legend!? Hellooooo! Join me as I chat with my friend Adam Rose; actor, dancer, content creator, comedy icon, blue-cardigan king, dad & hubby! Adam is the best & I'm so happy you're here to learn more about his illustrious life as a performer. Here's his IMDb bio: Rose made his debut opposite Robin Williams and Julie Kavner in Woody Allen's Deconstructing Harry. Born to a would-be Rabbinical cantor and an opera singer, Rose embraced music at an early age and excelled at Tap, Jazz, Ballet, and the martial arts training he underwent. It was during this same time that Rose was cast to be the voice of Peanut for three years, as the title-character on PB & J Otter, a cartoon on the Disney Channel. Soon after Rose would perform under the direction of Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening, Thoroughly Modern Millie) alongside Kristen Johnston and John Pankow in Peter Hedges' Baby Anger. The successful portrayal of a young boy with cancer led to subsequent guest spots on TV's Ed and Third Watch.Having developed a passion for live theater, Rose landed a role on stage with Theodore Bikel in The Gathering and went on to tour with three consecutive productions - including the pre-Broadway tour with Hal Linden. Throughout his time on stage and in recording booths, Rose continued to grow his love for dance, and at age 15 went on to become the youngest to ever teach dance at the renowned Broadway Dance Center in New York. While continuing to study the dramatic arts at New York's famed LaGuardia High School of the Performing Arts, he appeared on the hit series The Sopranos and the Comedy Central movie The Hebrew Hammer, starring Adam Goldberg. It was soon after that Rose had the honor of working with Noah Baumbach, Jeff Daniels, Laura Linney, and Anna Paquin in the Oscar-nominated The Squid and the Whale, as Otto - the best friend of Walt, played by Jesse Eisenberg. After four years of Shakespeare, character study, dialects, clowning (-study, not literally), vocal and dance training and all other school subjects, Rose was done with High School and ready to head west. The exodus was aided by his role on the production of Dead End, directed by Nicholas Martin at the Ahmanson Theater in Los Angeles' famous Music Center. Rose starred as Angel, one of the Dead End Kids, alongside Jeremy SIsto, Tom Everett Scott, Joyce Van Patten, and Kathryn Hahn. He later appeared in HBO's Voyeur Internet project, directed by Jake Scott, and soon after earned a role in Kenneth Lonergan's Margaret. Rose once again found himself on-set with Anna Paquin, along with Matthew Borderick, Matt Damon, Mark Ruffalo, and Kieran Culkin, just to name a few. While still acclimating to life in LA, Rose continued to make appearances on many hit TV shows. Follow Adam everywhere at @realadamrose. John, Michael and guest Talon Bigelow face off against 2013's "Enemies Closer." Listen to them discuss JCVD as a bad guy, tree fighting, Tom Everett Scott being cool with underage drinking and so much more.
Love is in the air this Valentine's Day, and what is more romantic than the Jack Nicholson/Michelle Pfeiffer cult (?) classic monster melee Wolf?! It's another Dealer's Choice - the first one in a while - and the result brings us straight to the full moon doorstep of horror, suspense, lust, and highbrow literary society circa 1994! Sarah & Joe discuss werewolf films of the era (which this film only basically fits into), making difficult comparisons with An American Werewolf in London and that all-time show favorite Teen Wolf, why anyone involved actually made this movie, and the stunning pedigree of the cast & crew. Was this more a Mike Nichols project, or a Jack Nicholson one? Is "sniff acting" the hardest thing to ever pull off on film? Is James Spader the film's MVP? Along the way, attention is thrown to Lon Chaney, Tom Everett Scott, Carnal Knowledge, The Prince of Tides, Stan Freberg, The Witches of Eastwick, and many more!
Act One Podcast - Episode 27 - Interview with Screenwriter and Director, Brian Baugh.Brian Baugh is a director, screenwriter, and producer known for creating socially relevant and inspiring human stories that cross genres. He has spent the majority of his time working in feature films, but also has extensive experience in television, commercials, documentaries, and web content. He had an eclectic upbringing from being born in New Jersey, spending his youth in South Florida, and growing up in Seattle. His creative endeavors began as a flannel clad high schooler in the Northwest directing theater, making comedic videos, and producing grunge music in basement studios.Brian started his filmmaking journey in earnest at the University of Southern California's School of Cinematic Arts, where he wrote and directed many films. His achievements earned him the USC School of Cinema Distinguished Scholar Award, and he was a member of the Order of Troy, Mortar Board, and Phi Beta Kappa. After graduating, he decided to pursue cinematography, and spent time on several studio films interning under world class cinematographers. Then he was awarded a Rotary International Ambassadorial Scholarship which took him to Cape Town, South Africa for a year of additional education in the liberal arts...and African township life. Shortly after returning from Africa, the budding Director of Photography shot his first feature film at the young age of twenty five. He spent the next ten years shooting over twenty films (THE ULTIMATE GIFT, JACK & THE BEANSTALK, AN AMERICAN CAROL), and shooting and directing dozens of commercials (Ford, NHL).Brian transitioned into feature directing with a high school drama, TO SAVE A LIFE. The film was released in theaters nationwide and earned an 'A' cinema score. The independent film's strong performance in the box office surprised many in Hollywood. Since then, he has written over twenty screenplays, several of which he is attached to direct. His film, I'M NOT ASHAMED, was nominated for a Dove Award for Most Inspirational Film. He directed the award winning comedic television pilot THE COMEBACK KIDS. Next, THE WORLD WE MAKE, a young adult interracial romance he wrote, produced, and directed, got picked up by Universal and Netflix and was released in 2019. His latest feature, FINDING YOU, was released theatrically in 2021 and also received very positive audience reviews. It was distributed by Roadside Attractions, Lionsgate, and Amazon domestically, and Universal internationally. The film is a spirited, upbeat, romantic dramedy shot in Ireland starring Jedidiah Goodacre, Katherine McNamara, Tom Everett Scott, and Vanessa Redgrave. Brian's desire is to be a part of telling stories that inspire audiences, foster justice and healing, or expand imagination and wonder in the world. The Act One Podcast provides insight and inspiration on the business and craft of Hollywood from a Christian perspective.Support the show (https://actoneprogram.com/donate/)
