He uses an evolutionary perspective to understand how mate preferences are linked to actual mating outcomes. Specifically, he is interested in how mate preferences are integrated with one another computationally in order to make mating decisions. In this episode, we talk about how the manosphere misuses evolutionary psychology research. We start by talking about what the manosphere is, and how they misappropriated Dr. Conroy-Beam's research. We discuss some mysoginist claims, why evolutionary psychology is so appealing to the manosphere, and evolutionary psychologists who align themselves with the manosphere. We talk about the motivations of people who have made a name for themselves in the manosphere, and how the manosphere also hurts the men who are attracted to it. Finally, we discuss what evolutionary psychologist should do to fight back against the misuse of their own research.--A HUGE THANK YOU TO MY PATRONS/SUPPORTERS: PER HELGE LARSEN, JERRY MULLER, BERNARDO SEIXAS, ADAM KESSEL, MATTHEW WHITINGBIRD, ARNAUD WOLFF, TIM HOLLOSY, HENRIK AHLENIUS, FILIP FORS CONNOLLY, ROBERT WINDHAGER, RUI INACIO, ZOOP, MARCO NEVES, COLIN HOLBROOK, PHIL KAVANAGH, SAMUEL ANDREEFF, FRANCIS FORDE, TIAGO NUNES, FERGAL CUSSEN, HAL HERZOG, NUNO MACHADO, JONATHAN LEIBRANT, JOÃO LINHARES, STANTON T, SAMUEL CORREA, ERIK HAINES, MARK SMITH, JOÃO EIRA, TOM HUMMEL, SARDUS FRANCE, DAVID SLOAN WILSON, YACILA DEZA-ARAUJO, ROMAIN ROCH, DIEGO LONDOÑO CORREA, YANICK PUNTER, CHARLOTTE BLEASE, NICOLE BARBARO, ADAM HUNT, PAWEL OSTASZEWSKI, NELLEKE BAK, GUY MADISON, GARY G HELLMANN, SAIMA AFZAL, ADRIAN JAEGGI, PAULO TOLENTINO, JOÃO BARBOSA, JULIAN PRICE, EDWARD HALL, HEDIN BRØNNER, DOUGLAS FRY, FRANCA BORTOLOTTI, GABRIEL PONS CORTÈS, URSULA LITZCKE, SCOTT, ZACHARY FISH, TIM DUFFY, SUNNY SMITH, JON WISMAN, WILLIAM BUCKNER, PAUL-GEORGE ARNAUD, LUKE GLOWACKI, GEORGIOS THEOPHANOUS, CHRIS WILLIAMSON, PETER WOLOSZYN, DAVID WILLIAMS, DIOGO COSTA, ALEX CHAU, AMAURI MARTÍNEZ, CORALIE CHEVALLIER, BANGALORE ATHEISTS, LARRY D. In EPISODE 182 OF GROWING OLDER LIVING YOUNGER, Dr. Thomas Weimbs and Dr. Gillian Lockitch discuss the prevalence and management of chronic kidney disease (CKD), which affects one in seven adults in the U.S. Dr. Weimbs highlights the importance of diet and lifestyle in managing CKD, particularly through ketogenic metabolic therapy. He explains that ketosis, induced by a low-carbohydrate diet, can slow the progression of polycystic kidney disease (PKD) by reducing inflammation and improving kidney function. Dr. Weimbs describes the Ren-Nu program, a three-month nutrition and lifestyle intervention for kidney disease patients, which has shown significant improvements in kidney function and pain reduction for many participants. Whether you're affected by kidney disease, have a family history, or are simply interested in how nutrition and epigenetic strategies can support healthy aging, this episode will provide invaluable insights. Thomas Weimbs PhD is a leading expert in kidney disease research. He is a professor at the University of California in Santa Barbara (UCSB) where he directs a research laboratory focused on polycystic kidney disease. He received his doctoral degree from the University of Cologne, Germany, and then conducted postdoctoral research at the University of California in San Francisco. In 1999, as an assistant professor, he started his first independent research laboratory at the Lerner Research Institute of the Cleveland Clinic. There, his research on polycystic kidney disease began with the support of a local family affected by PKD and whose family foundation still supports PKD research in Dr. Weimbs' lab today. In 2005, Dr. Weimbs moved his laboratory back to California to join the Department of Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology at UCSB. The laboratory studies molecular mechanisms underlying PKD with an emphasis towards developing new therapies. Recent research has led to the discovery that dietary interventions and natural metabolites strongly slow PKD progression in animal models. This led to the launch of Santa Barbara Nutrients with the goal to make these approaches available for the nutritional management of PKD. Hot Hot Hot. It's no surprise that Southern Californians are seeing their monthly electricity bills surge this summer. As increasing rates have met with increasing temperatures, there have been anecdotal reports that, for some consumers, bills have skyrocketed, even by hundreds of dollars. And Californians are looking for answers. In 1999, he started his first independent research laboratory at the Lerner Research Institute of the Cleveland Clinic as an assistant professor. His laboratory studies molecular mechanisms underlying PKD with an emphasis towards developing new therapies. Research from Dr. Weimbs' lab has led to a better understanding of PKD and led to novel methods to deliver therapeutics specifically to polycystic kidneys. Some of the most recent research has led to the discovery that dietary interventions and natural metabolites strongly slow PKD progression in animal models. This led to the launch of Santa Barbara Nutrients with the goal to make these approaches available for the nutritional management of PKD and to support kidney health. Research in Dr. Weimbs' laboratory has been funded by grants from federal agencies, including the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Defense, by private foundations, including the Lillian Goldman Charitable Trust, the Amy P. Goldman Foundation and the Jarrett Family Fund, as well as several biotech companies. Our latest “member profile” podcast features an extended conversation with Yvonne Haley, president and founder of Commerce, Calif.-based Haley Industrial Coatings & Linings, Inc. More than 40 years ago, Haley graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) with degrees in business and dance. She initially worked as a professional dancer, but, within a few short years, Haley went from dancing on floors to creating them! Soon after, she pulled off an even more impressive feat by starting her own business, which, at the time, was quite a rarity for a woman in the world of coatings contracting. Today, Haley Industrial's website says it is a “proud, woman-owned small business with ‘large business' capabilities.” The company specializes in areas such as resinous flooring and wall systems, waterproofing, green concrete, and vapor transmission flooring, with end markets ranging from pharmaceutical clients to chemical plants to battery acid installations. It's no surprise that the “Battery Queen” nickname has stuck with Haley over the years. In our podcast interview, Haley shared perspective on her time with the company and in the coatings industry, along with insight on how it has changed over the past four decades. She also offered her views on the recent merger of SSPC: The Society for Protective Coatings and NACE International and opportunities for the future with the newly merged organization known as the Association for Materials Protection and Performance (AMPP). CoatingsPro's longtime readers might also recognize Haley from previous profiles in the May 2005 and July 2011 issues.

Part 1 For close to over 50 years, Dr. John M. Anderson has been researching into and writing on the Chumash history and culture since the early 1970s at the University of California, Santa Barbara. His includes the Tejon Reservation in CA and the Treaty with the Castake, Texon, Etc., of 1851 between several California Indigenous nations whose lands range from presently what is known as Santa Maria to Lompoc to Santa Barbara, Ventura, Los Angeles, and Long Beach — and stretching eastward into the Mojave Desert to a point between Barstow and Las Vegas. Marcus Lopez, Chumash nations, and executive director and co-host of American Indian Airwaves starts with part one of our continuing series titled “Beyond Missions: The History of the Chumash Nation” starts with Dr. John M. Anderson. For more information on the Chumash, visit https://johnandersonlibrary.org/ Guest: Dr. John M. Anderson, PhD in Philosophy, historian, and archivist. He has been researching into and writing on the Chumash history and culture since the early 1970s at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Part 2 William I. Robinson's new book, Global Civil War: Capitalism Post-Pandemic, is a big picture synthesis of a global capitalism in a state of deep crisis that is cascading social, political, and cultural conflicts all over Mother Earth with dire implications for not only Indigenous peoples and their respective First Nations, but also the futures of lives unless massive structural changes immediately occur. One major factor to the inordinate concentration of political, economic, and cultural power is a much more advanced digitalization of the entire global economy and society and of the social and political during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic; and Robinson contends the pandemic lockdowns served as dry runs for how digitalization may allow the dominant groups to step up restructuring time and space and to exercise greater control over the global working class. The global capitalist system is now pushing toward expansion through militarization, wars, and conflicts, through a new round of violent dispossession, and through further plunder of the state. All this and more in part one of a three-part interview with William I. Robinson on Global Civil War: Capitalism Post-Pandemic (2022). Guest: William Robinson, professor of sociology at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), affiliated with the Latin American and Iberian Studies Program, and with the Global and International Studies Program at UCSB. He is the author of the new book, Global Civil War: Capitalism Post-Pandemic (2022), and The Global Police State (2020), Global Capitalism and the Crises of Humanity (2014) and We Will Not Be Silenced (2017). Robinson joins us for the first part of three-part interview on his brand-new book, Global Civil War: Capitalism Post-Pandemic (2022). Thursday, 5/12/2022, on American Indian Airwaves, 7pm to 8pm (PCT) “Global Civil War: Capitalism Post-Pandemic, Part 2“ Part 1 William I. Fighting for Climate Policy Dismantling the energy system is crucial to breaking the energy crisis. Implementing clean energy policies is the most effective way to change our current energy system and undo the playbook of the fossil fuel and utility industries. Citizens need to demand legislators to support green policies because a policy problem can only be fought with policy solutions. Mass public pressure, such as the youth protests led by Greta Thunberg, can disrupt the status quo and compel lawmakers to act. Policy Feedback Policy feedback is the idea that once policies are enacted, they reshape the next generation of politics. In the case of clean energy, the implementation of policies would kick start new industries and create jobs. As these industries become entrenched, they would defend the policies that created them and promote additional policy aimed at more green energy. Once this path dependence is created, a totally clean and renewable energy future is the result. Policy Retrenchment Fossil fuel and utility companies have immense power in state legislatures to reverse clean energy policies. Utilities around the country know how to run profitable power plants that burns fossil fuels and thus do not have incentives to switch to renewables. They fight against decarbonization by resisting implementation; rolling back existing guidelines for retrenchment; and even challenging pro-renewable candidates in primary races. He uses an evolutionary perspective to understand how mate preferences are linked to actual mating outcomes. Specifically, he is interested in how mate preferences are integrated with one another computationally in order to make mating decisions. His work combines agent-based modeling of mate choice evolution with studies of real couples to compare and explore candidate algorithms for how people select their mating strategies, evaluate potential mates, and regulate their relationships. In this episode, we focus on human mating. We talk about some of the most well-established mate preferences. We then get into how people choose mates based on these same preferences, and we focus mostly on Euclidian algorithms, as explored by Dr. Conroy-Beam in his work, and all of the phenomena that we are able to study and understand through them. We specifically address things like relationship satisfaction, mate switching, and mate retention tactics. We also talk about studying sex differences using multivariate analyses, opposite-sex friendships, and mysteries in human mating that we have yet to answer. We end up by talking about some limitations in traditional evolutionary psychology, and how things are expected to progress in the near future. -- Follow Dr. Conroy-Beam's work: Faculty page: http://bit.ly/2Z5cWvP Personal website: http://bit.ly/2NjYCZq Articles on Researchgate: http://bit.ly/2PlP5nt Relevant papers: Euclidean Mate Value and Power of Choice on the Mating Market: http://bit.ly/2HgrOwA Friends with Benefits: The Evolved Psychology of Same- and Opposite-Sex Friendship: http://bit.ly/2zeZ9mY How Sexually Dimorphic Are Human Mate Preferences?: http://bit.ly/2MpCjBT -- A HUGE THANK YOU TO MY PATRONS: KARIN LIETZCKE, ANN BLANCHETTE, SCIMED, PER HELGE HAAKSTD LARSEN, LAU GUERREIRO, RUI BELEZA, ANTÓNIO CUNHA, CHANTEL GELINAS, JERRY MULLER, FRANCIS FORDE, HANS FREDRIK SUNDE, BRIAN RIVERA, ADRIANO ANDRADE, YEVHEN BODRENKO, SERGIU CODREANU, ADAM BJERRE, ŁUKASZ STAFINIAK, AIRES ALMEIDA, BERNARDO SEIXAS, HERBERT GINTIS, RUTGER VOS, RICARDO VLADIMIRO, BO WINEGARD, JOHN CONNORS, ADAM KESSEL, AND VEGA GIDEY! Ahmad Atif Ahmad’s Pitfalls of Scholarship: Lessons from Islamic Studies (Palgrave Macmillan, 2016) is a unique reflection on the field of Islamic studies. It is not quite a memoir, although it is reflective of Islamic studies, academia, and higher education in general. It is also not quite a book of theory, although it offers several deep readings of various figures in the Muslim intellectual canon. Rather, it is a collection of essays. Chapter 1, for example is a rumination the humanities and its place in the modern academy. Ahmad then goes on to concept of academic frustration. He builds on this in the third chapter by examining the iconic Muslim intellectual al-Ghazali. The final chapter ties the wider world into the academy and considers themes of nationalism and democracy. In this interview, we talk to Ahmad about what it is to be a scholar in 21st-century America (and specifically a scholar of Islam in 21st-century America), the politics of the field, what it is to be bold in academia, and the value of curiosity, all with Ahmad’s jocular cheer and sage advice. Ahmad Atif Ahmad is professor of religious studies at the University of California in Santa Barbara (UCSB). He also serves on UCSB’s 'Council on Faculty Issues and Awards' and the UC-System wide Academic Advisory Committee for Internship Programs in the University Center in Washington, DC. He previously served as associate director of the University of California Center in Washington, Sultan Qaboos Chair of Mideast Studies at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, and as visiting associate professor at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. The author of ‘Islamic Law: Cases, Authorities, and Worldview (London: Bloomsbury, 2017), ‘The Fatigue of the Sharia’ (NYC: Palgrave, 2012), and ‘Structural Interrelations of Theory and Practice in Islamic Law' (Leiden: Brill, 2006), Ahmad teaches courses on Islamic legal reasoning in medieval Islam and early modern Egypt. ControlTalk NOW interview with Dr. Igor Mezic, Chief Scientific and Technical Advisor, Co-Founder and John Morris, VP of Sales and Marketing of Ecorithm, a firm from Santa Barbara that is reshaping what it means to benchmark, showcase, and ensure occupant comfort, operational efficiency, and building health. Dr. Mezic is a world-renowned expert in the field of building energy efficiency. He is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). Ken Sinclair’s Automated Buildings February, 2016 Release: “Making it Mashable.” Ken Sinclair, owner and editor of Automated Buildings, applies the word mashable to the building automation world. Mashable, which the Urban Dictionary defines as “a term used to describe two or more online applications that work together and/or within each other.” February’s AB theme, “Making it Mashable,” addresses then, a very relevant concern — that as we sort through the maelstrom of exponential IoT technology impacting our industry, an industry that seeks optimality in every aspect of smart building control, data integration, and the maximum realization of energy and operational efficiencies — the question becomes, are we there yet? The technology certainly is, but our “mashability,” will ultimately answer yes or no for us. VYKON Integrated Analytics Available Now on JACE Hardware.
