Russell St. George, retired welder, plays with fire Any band would relish having a cheerleader like Shirley Maloney. At a recent show by Last Minute Soulmates at the Towne Crier in Beacon, she acted out the words, exhorted the crowd to sing along and pounded on tables during the final song, a funky cover of "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)." A good portion of the rowdy crowd almost reached Maloney's level of enthusiasm. House staff created an impromptu dance floor by clearing tables near the stage as people swung their partners with elbows locked together during "Maggie's Farm" and danced in circles during a heavy version of "Hound Dog." At one point, two men started screaming, ostensibly out of joy. The group's founder, Russell St. George, moved to town in 1986 and is a dean of Beacon's music scene. He focuses on original songs but likes to mix in atypical versions of covers, including "Your Cheating Heart" as a deliberate shuffle. "I'm not good enough to play them like the record, but I do like to shake things up with the arrangement or approach," he says. "And I still write, including songs about what's going on, like one about gun violence called 'When's it Gonna Stop?' " His originals, some of which feature a reggae tinge, keep things simple and rely on hooky choruses that get people singing. At one point, almost the entire audience, including the waitstaff, belted out the words. Working as a welder in Peekskill, a job he held for 37 years, St. George heard that houses in Beacon could be had on the cheap. His first local band, Daarc Ages (an acronym of members' first names), released a couple of CDs and opened for Dee Snider, Uriah Heap and Blue Oyster Cult at The Chance in Poughkeepsie and other venues. "We'd make a CD and someone would quit, so we had to keep finding musicians and never really got off the ground," he says. "Besides, I was kind of shy." That's odd because he sports flowing hair, a goatee and moustache. His fashion sense includes hats, big round glasses and black, accented with scarves, a look that leans more toward the hippie camp than the blue-collar world. Over the years, he played every local venue and hosted a 17-year monthly jam at Joe's Irish Pub (now MoMo Valley) that he called St. George and Friends. "The whole time, I never missed a date," he says. "But I turned 60, COVID hit and the end arrived." Last Minute Soulmates started as an acoustic duo that grew into an electric project by 2011. Self-effacing, he credits band members for any success. Not shy about his left-leaning political views, he lost some followers over the years. He feels no compulsion to record his new tunes, in part because working in the studio is a drag compared to playing for a responsive audience. "Streams and other delivery systems don't get a lot of traction," he says. "If people want to hear my songs in their best light, come see me live." Last Minute Soulmates, with St. George (vocals, guitar), Carla Springer (vocals), Rik Mercaldi (guitar), Harry Lawrence (bass) and Mitch Florian (drums), will perform at 9 p.m. on May 23 at Gleason's, 23 S. Division St., in Peekskill.
Chris Slade has been in the rock n' roll business for 60 years and is set to release a new double-album Chris Slade's Timeline "Timescape" that spans his entire career from Tom Jones, AC/DC and Uriah Heap.

Classic rock is a genre that will never die. And thank the metal Gods for that! Each generation seems to throw up another band that fits the classic rock mould, and each manages to maintain some form of individuality to separate themselves from those who came before. That band for this generation is the awesomely titled Cats In Space, a band that started life as a studio project but through sheer weight of brilliance soon morphed into a fully fledged rock outfit in their own right that has swept all before them, culminating in their latest 15 track behemoth, Kickstart The Sun.Guitarist/songwriter Greg Hart joined HEAVY to go into further detail."It's been amazing over here," he enthused of the reception afforded Kickstart The Sun. "I mean, it's done really, really well. It's outsold our other album so it's done well. In fact, I'm still getting emails in as we speak and it has featured high in the end of year readers polls and critics polls and stuff so we have had a couple of albums of the year mentioned with it which has been amazing. The reports and the reviews have been astonishing. It was a big gamble doing a double album in this day and age, but it seems to have paid off."We press Hart to elaborate on the musical direction of Kickstart The Sun and what Cats In Space were going for with it."To people in Oz that don't know who we are, we're kind of a classic rock band in the traditional sense that we're very steeped in the 70s - like Queen, Yellow, there's bits of Supertramp in there, John Miles, Uriah Heap - and we tend to go down that path. All of the albums we've done to date have gone down well in that marketplace. But Kickstart The Sun is a double album. It's loosely concepted, but it's not a heavy concept album. It's basically 15 songs of chaos (laughs). We do epic songs and we do ballads... As I'm the principal songwriter it's very, very influenced by Queen more than anything. We go to huge production that not many bands do these days, so it certainly gets us noticed."In the full interview we talk about the album being a double album and if that was planned from the start, the risks in the modern age of releasing double albums, the musical content, why specifically the 70s, touring Australia, the band name and where it came from and much more.

Udo Dirkschneider needs no introduction amongst old school metal lovers.Starting his distinguished career as vocalist for Accept, he continued pushing with projects U.D.O and Dirkschneider to firmly establish himself among the greats.Musically, Udo is an enigma, a man who has consistently and successfully done things entirely his own way, which is an increasing rarity in the modern age of music. Now, reflecting somewhat on his career, Udo has released a 17 track covers album of songs and music that are dear to him personally.Coverings bands such as Uriah Heap, Rainbow, Motorhead, Scorpions, AC/DC, Judas Priest and Queen, Udo has stamped his own mark on each of the songs without impacting the beauty of the original versions. It is an undertaking as breathtaking as it is ambitious and one which few musicians would attempt, let alone get away with.HEAVY caught up with Udo this week to chat about the new album, appropriately titled My Way."It just, in a way, happened,” he laughed. “We had some studio time so we just did one song - I don't want to say for fun - but to see how it worked with my voice, and then we did it and the song came out great. Then we started talking about maybe would it be possible to do a whole album? Yes. Then the producer and another guy said to make up a list of all the songs I think I might want to do so I made up a list and here we go. 17 songs now on a cover album. These songs are songs I chose for the album. Not songs that inspired me, it's more personal songs as a person, not as a musician."In the full interview, Udo runs through the song selection process, why now is the right time to release this album, the personal nature of the songs chosen, a run down on most of the tracks and why he chose them, touring plans and more.
Brian Eno once said that while The Velvet Underground & Nico only sold around 30k copies upon its release, each of the 30k people that purchased it started their own band. The proof lies in the straight line that you can draw from the band to artists as disparate as Bowie and the New York Dolls to Sonic Youth and REM. It's with that that in mind that the following artists are name dropped during this episodes conversation about the Velvets classic debut: Ramones, Black Flag, The Stooges, Fela Kuti, Uriah Heap, Hawkwind, Pentagram, EYEHATEGOD, Sniper, Pogues, Stiff Little Fingers, VoiVod, Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Love, The Doors, The Jimi Experience, Pink Floyd, The Clash, Sex Pistols, The Damned, Buzzcocks, MC5. We continue with an amazing episode of our series “3 Chord Truths”, where we have been talking to songwriters and musicians, and have been able to sit down with some very interesting personalities, with cool backstories that reveal what it takes to follow the dream of being a success in the music business. Tonight's guest is Jack Williams. He has an amazing story that spans many years, and shows that tenacity, talent, and some luck can help create some amazing opportunities. Jack's list of friends and acquaintances, people he has worked for and with reads as a who's who from different types of music genres. The Who, Ritchie Havens, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Uriah Heap, the Allman Brothers, Kevin Costner, and many many more are part of Jack's incredible story. He recounts many of the meetings, and fun he had, as well as some of the sacrifice and pain in the choices he had to make. Jack continues to be involved in writing music and works with a variety of artists, as well as putting out a new album of his own, titled “Halfway to Hell”. We found Jack to be very down to earth, and thoroughly enjoyed our conversation with him very much. We know you will find Jacks story as interesting and inspiring as we do. Halfway To Hell BIO: “When I was a kid, I thought I was the only one going through what I went through,” H. Jack Williams says. “Music always helped me connect emotionally. But there's still a lot of abused kids turned damaged adults in the world today, and I hope this album let's them know they're not alone.” For Williams (his friends know him as Jack), it's a characteristically candid statement from the veteran-songwriter-turned-recording-artist who's experiencing one of the most surprising second acts in music. And with his debut album Halfway To Hell, Jack Williams now delivers a sonically startling testament to trauma and survival that sounds – and stings – like no other. The 10-songs on Halfway To Hell are all co-written by Williams – with the exception of his haunting take on the standard ‘What A Wonderful World' – including two co-written with Kevin Costner and directly address Jack's broken past and road to recovery. “I'm not afraid to say how horrific my childhood was,” Jack says. “I've had huge anger issues, drug issues, everything issues, and I'm not afraid to confront any of that darkness in these songs.” With producer Adam Box shaping Jack's graveled vocals into an American Recordings-meets-Nine Inch Nails soundscape, Halfway To Hell simmers with menace, growls in defiance and shimmers with strength. “I've been in the music business since '71,” Williams explains. “So many people still in this game at my age are jaded and bitter, but my heart is still intact. This album is who I am.” To truly understand Williams' personal journey is to also recognize an unprecedented 50+-year odyssey through Folk, Rock, Southern Rock, Country and beyond. A U.S. Marines Force Recon veteran and trained Escoffier chef, Jack's one-of-a-kind career includes being mentored by Richie Havens; a ‘70s publishing deal with The Who; as the first in-house songwriter for UK rockers Uriah Heep; landing ‘80s cuts with Molly Hatchet, Blackfoot and Gregg Allman, for whom he co-wrote the hit ‘Just Before The Bullets Fly'; numerous ‘90s tracks for The Oak Ridge Boys; running kitchen teams on research vessels in the Aleutian Islands and Azores as well as supply ships during the Gulf War, for which he earned a Medal of Bravery from President Bush; ‘00s Nashville cuts on the Miracles From Heaven soundtrack and with artists that include Montgomery Gentry, Black Stone Cherry and a Top Ten hit for Canadian artist Aaron Pritchett. Eventually, Jack's patience for the current scene came to an end. “Three years ago, I was done,” he says. “I didn't want to write any more ‘back of my pickup truck' bullshit. I figured I've had a pretty good career; it's time to go fishing. But when I started to write and sing what was in my heart, everything began to change.” In more ways than one, Williams had finally found his voice. Always self-conscious of his ragged vocals, Jack started performing new material at Nashville singer/songwriter nights to widespread industry acclaim. He soon got a call from Academy Award winner Kevin Costner, whose band Kevin Costner & Modern West would record two of Jack's songs – including the Top 20 hit ‘Love Shine' – and cut four more Jack tracks for 2019's top-selling Tales From Yellowstone album. Williams was also approached by producer and longtime Brothers Osborne drummer Adam Box to capture Jack's new direction on record, with the resulting 2020 EP Already Dead leading Film Daily to declare, “Jack Williams is a musical legend.” “People are starving for genuine delivery, and Jack is the real deal,” says producer/programmer/engineer/co-writer Box, who compares William's unconventional vocal quality to that of Leonard Cohen and Dylan. “His voice is so unique, and anything he sings is sung with conviction. We started this album with lyrics and a blank slate, then approached each track visually. Sometimes the beauty of the song is in the contrast, like with ‘Wonderful World', but it all comes back to tone. I see this album as a montage of shapes and textures, like cutting up construction paper to make collages. Ultimately, it's an authentic expression of Jack.”

Philippians 2.5-7 NLT 'You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being.' These amazing words form the beginning of what many people consider to be a First Century hymn. They beautifully express the fundamental truth that God's desire is to turn our thinking upside down! Our natural inclination is to seek power, prestige and recognition but Jesus came to this earth and did precisely the opposite. And that, says Paul, is the attitude that the Philippians needed to have towards one another in the church. He wants to see them ditch all traces of arrogance and to consider others better than themselves. It's all very challenging. The humility of Jesus is truly astonishing. He, above everyone else, was entitled to have power and influence and to enjoy a life of ease and comfort but he gladly accepted the opposite. He was willing to endure the ultimate powerlessness of being hung upon a cross and to experience the agony of rejection by his own people and even by his Father. The outcome of his humility was that God exalted Jesus to the highest place of all and gave him the name above every name. Truly Jesus turns all our thinking about life on its head. And that is now the approach to life that Paul encourages his friends in Philippi to adopt. The only way to be blessed by God is to learn what it means to be truly humble. So how are we going to grow in humility, since everything depends upon it? Probably the most important fact is that we cannot become more humble by our own efforts. There is nothing more sickening than someone who, like Dickens' character Uriah Heap, manufactures an artificial pretence of being “everso ‘umble”. Humility results from us getting closer to God and allowing his Holy Spirit to do deep work on our character. The grace of humility will grow unselfconsciously and gradually as we come to love God. As we get to know God better we will find, miraculously, that we are starting to have the very same attitude as Jesus. QUESTION: Whose example of humility do you find most inspiring? PRAYER: Loving God, thank you that by your Spirit you are helping me day by day to have the same attitudes as Jesus. Amen
Sigh. Nice to see a Go-Gos movie. Wasn't one VH1 special enough? Again, The Go-Gos were not a band after their second album. FIGHT ME. They were a brand. They were not great instrumentalists, but they did not have to be. Their songs were catchy, but there weren't that many of them. They were fun in a B-52's way, even if Belinda Carlisle's Cher-esque vibrato on helium always bothered me. Still, it was nice to see clean-cut, good-looking gals make good in the MTV era. And someday I will play some! But you should know that there were quite a few all-female bands before them. Bands like Birtha and Fanny would have wiped the floor with them. Brian Hyland - Mail Order Gun (1970) Brian Hyland had three Top 10 hits in the decade. His first, "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polkadot Bikini", went right to #1! 1960. There was also "Gypsy Woman" in 1970 (written by Curtis Mayfield) and that wonderful September song, "Sealed With A Kiss". You know I love the artists who started in the pre-Beatle era and try to reinvent themselves later on. There were so many. In September 2006 Paul Vance, the song's co-writer, read on TV his own mistaken obituary, as a consequence of the death of another man, Paul Van Valkenburgh, who claimed to have written "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polkadot Bikini" under the name Paul Vance. The impostor had explained his lack of royalty payments for the song by claiming that he had sold the rights as a teenager. Vance, the song's true co-author, has earned several million dollars from the song since 1960, describing it as "a money machine". Vance also co-wrote "Playground In My Mind," the hit for Clint Holmes, and "Run, Joey, Run", a hit for David Geddes. Traffic Safety Tip - Loaded Brian Hyland - The Bum Is Mine (1977) Written by Allen Toussaint. Jacqueline Taïeb - 7 A.M. (1968) Jerry Lee Lewis - The Cannikin Clink (Let A Soldier Drink) (1969) From rehearsals for the musical Catch My Soul, of which I will go into more detail in a future episode. Let's just say I bought the vinyl soundtrack, and it's a pretty good Hair-era retelling of Othello. This is from Peter Guralnick, who authored the ne plus ultra bio (to me) of Elvis Presley: Picture Jerry Lee Lewis as Iago in the rock ‘n’ roll version of “Othello.” You’re just going to have to imagine it. Me, too. Because as far as I know, no visual record exists except for a few scattered publicity photographs. He played the role in Los Angeles in 1968. The show was scheduled to come to New York next (we had already made plans to attend) – but it never did. According to Jerry Lee, it was because he had grown tired of the actor’s life, six weeks of following the same script night after night was enough, even if, like any Method performer, he never did play it the same way twice. (“I never worked so hard in my life. I mean two hours and forty-five minutes running up and down stairs – it was a mess.”) Very likely the fact that his recording career revived at exactly this time, with three Top 10 country hits in a row, had something to do with it, too. No matter. As this rehearsal recording clearly proves, Jerry Lee inhabited the role, just as he has inhabited virtually every song he has ever sung. Listen to the leer in his voice, listen to the clarity of the message, listen to his delight in the lines. Oh man, I wish I had seen the show. When I first met him two years later, in the spring of 1970, the role was still clearly in his blood. “You know,” he said to me toward the end of my visit, “a lot of people think if you can make a lot of money, that’s what this life is all about. Well, that can’t be what life is all about, you know? If I can just play my piano and sing – you know, the proudest I ever was in my life was when I got my first record out, hear[ing] it on the radio for the first time.“ He meditated on that for a little while. “Well, life is just a vapor,” he said, winking at me, as if I, too, must surely recognize this Shakespearean allusion. “You breathe it in, and what the heck, it’s gone.“ Kenny Vance - Shuffling Up Your Downs (1969) Written by Becker and Fagen. From Wikipedia: In 1967, the songwriting duo of Walter Becker and Donald Fagen came to the Brill Building to sell their songs, and ended up knocking on Vance's door. Vance liked what he heard, and offered to manage them. The duo arranged horn and string sections for Jay and the Americans and toured with them as bassist and keyboardist, eventually recording demos and masters with Vance in 1969. He continued to work with Becker & Fagen until 1971, when he brought one of their songs ("I Mean to Shine") to Richard Perry, who then brought it to Barbra Streisand and recorded it on Barbra Joan Streisand. Take A Dip With Dinah - Kenny Vance (1969) Ibid. The Gass - In The City (1966) The Gass - The New Breed (1966) The She's - The Fool (1966) The What Four - Ain't No Use In Crying Susan (1966) Formed in Manhattan and comprised of Elizabeth Burke (drums), Cathy Cochran (guitar), China Girard (rhythm guitar) and Diane Hartford (bass). They signed with Columbia in 1966, where they released "Baby I Dig Love" b/w "It's Hard to Live On Promises" and "I'm Gonna Destroy That Boy" and "Ain't No Use in Crying, Susan." "I'm Gonna Destroy That Boy" is a great title. The What Four - Do You Believe (1966) Different band, same name. This one from Dayton, Ohio. XTC - This World Over (1984) L Ron Hubbard/Yvonne Gillham Jentzsch - The Golden Dawn (1972) Scientology is an applied religious philosophy, jerk. John Phillips - Zulu Warrior (1973-1979) Sensation Alex Harvey Band - Give My Compliments To The Chef (1974) The cover is a send-up of the big Roger Dean covers done for Yes, Uriah Heap, etc. I love this record very much. This Friday on Kyle Meredith With..., Kyle offers up a special trio of interviews with legends Todd Rundgren, Uriah Heep, and The Guess Who. Rundgren discusses his forthcoming memoir, The Individualist, his recent collaborations with The Lemon Twigs, and the two anniversaries surrounding 1968's Nazz and 1978's The Hermit of Mink Hollow. Uriah Heep's Mick Box chats about the group's 25th album, Living the Dream, how they're always finding their classic sound, writing topical songs, and plans for their upcoming 50th anniversary. And last, The Guess Who's Garry Peterson and Rudy Sarzo weigh in on the band's new album, The Future Is What It Used To Be, writing songs about America, and an interesting coincidence that put their current singer in a seat on a plane next to a former singer. In his formative years as a session musician, in fact even after the recording of his third album, Elton earned some extra cash recording cover versions of the hits of the day, anonymously, for budget record labels. These long player albums retailed at around the same price as a regular single, and they would be rushed out to share the shelves with their 'legitimate' counterparts. Until the record labels worked out that they could make money by making compilations out of the actual recordings, these records sold in their millions. For years, these records sat at the back of people's collections, and in piles in charity shops, before Elton's fans started going through them. More than 50 recordings featuring his voice have since been identified, and many more remain to be discovered. In these sessions, Elton sang and played keyboard along with many now-familiar names, including David Byron, who went on to front Uriah Heap, and Dana Gillespie. Dana's biography is long and impressive, taking in connections with Jimmy Page, Donovan, Dylan, Bowie and Lionel Bart. She was also the original Mary Magdalene in the Jesus Christ Superstar stage show, and a four-time British Junior Waterski champion. Dana very kindly agreed to be interviewed for this episode, and her recollections are here, bringing the story of these sessions to life. Featured in the episode are recordings that did not find their way onto the collections that came out under titles such as 'Reg Dwight's Piano Goes Pop' in the nineties. I've tried to find less commonly-heard recordings, and in the process I have uncovered a couple of recordings that are new to YouTube (and uploaded them to my channel). I am indebted to the work of all the Elton John fans who have researched this material. The hall of fame must include David Bodoh, whose 'Eltonography' website hosts a wonderful list of the tracks that Elton is throught to have contributed to. Thanks also go to the gentleman who compiles the tobekompleated discography. His discography features images and track-listings of many of the records that collectors might want to investigate. Anyone with an interest in these records would also enjoy the following web pages that are devoted to them - hitcovers, copycatcovers, and topofthepops. Here are the other links that I make reference to in the episode: The remainder of the interview with Dana - about her incredible career. A recording of Dana tackling 'That Same Old Feeling', a beautiful song, a top 10 hit for Pickettywitch in January 1970. David Byron's take on 'Let's Work Together' by Canned Heat. Elton taking secondary vocals on 'Wand'rin' Star' by Lee Marvin. The full playlist of tracks on '28 International Top Songs'. Here's a blog post about this record.

The song I’ve sent you this week is one I wrote for David Alexander back in the day….it’s close to the anniversary of his sad passing…and I know he was very popular in Spain. It is called “Let’s Keep It Simple” which he recorded and put it on his album celebrating his marriage to Penny Page…..I wrote a pot of stuff for them both…including the title track of the album…great guy..I miss him. It’s been a busy week….top of the range songwriter Barry Mason is coming to do a show at our weekly Cheshirecats rock and roll nights which we put on every Wednesday. I’ve put a band together to back him consisting of Derek Green on bass (ex Del Renas)….Tony Cavanagh on drums…myself on guitar and a young genius called Paul Rowbottom on keyboards…because Barry sings in some very strange keys and we are working with songs arranged by the great Les Reed it is a major challenge to say the least …so we have been rehearsing and we’re getting there….should be a great show and a feather in the cap of our organisation. And this week it was nice to see Lee Curtis who brought his band along and Brian “Griff” Griffiths of The Big Three turned up (he’s on holiday from the States) and did a spot…so it’s all happening at the moment. Also on the music scene I read in the paper that Van Morrison has been knighted…I know the guy is a great musician and has a big following but…knighted? I like his music but he’s got no stage personality….so you may as well sit at home and listen to one of his CDs…..I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again …when is Ken Dodd going to receive his knighthood?…he has to be the greatest entertainer in history…and has given so much to show business….I don’t know how they come up with the names….(I wont mention Sir Jimmy Savile…and Sir Rolph Harris) There’s been a lot of complaints about parents parking outside schools when dropping their children off…it has been suggested by some empy headed politician that the teachers should be given the power to slap a parking ticket on offending cars….oh!…that’s a good idea…that will go a long way to help teacher parent relations….most people are fine but you’ll always get the odd one who doesn’t consider anyone but their stupid selves…that’s a given…not to mention the aggression which the teachers are not paid to endure. On top of all this a head teacher was interviewed on breakfast TV by the unbearable Piers Morgan who was asking really intelligent questions like “Are you happy to make disabled people have to park some distance away and have to struggle to get their kids into school”…which is about the level of Mr.Morgan’s intelligence….the whole point is to prevent the loss of life of a youngster….it only takes some fool in a hurry to back over a kid then everyone will jump on that bandwagon. A possible answer would be to have a proper contract drawn up with the rules and regulations of the school which the parents must sign….if parents break the rules they are in breach of contract. I had to laugh at a documentary on BBC4 about the rock band Uriah Heap….two of the original members were reminiscing about the old days…so funny. They said they were travelling first class everywhere and throwing big parties and didn’t realise that it was coming out of THEIR money….they made an album called “High and Mighty and decided to promote it with a photo session in the revolving restaurant at the top of a mountain in Switzerland (the one in the James Bond film) and invited the press to come along and enjoy the “free” travel and booze…when they got to the photo session a fight broke out amongst the band members so there was no photo session….now THIS is rock and roll. That’s what these young hopefuls don’t realise….the record companies give you nothing…it’s YOUR money you are blowing.
