In this episode, we highlight two companies that leverage data from many different sources to create a more complete picture of a person's health. The ultimate goal? Shifting away from the current model of “sick care” - where patients primarily see their doctors when they aren't feeling well – to care models that prioritize long-term health and self-management with guidance from providers. These companies are helping lead the way to value-based care, from using AI to sift through patient-reported data and provide actionable insights, to integrating NCQA's HEDIS measurements into their data platform, thereby putting quality at the center of everything they do. Here, you'll get a glimpse into the challenges and opportunities in our current data-rich health care ecosystem. The episode begins with a conversation with leaders from Welldoc. Welldoc is a health tech company developing patient-facing apps to support self-management of chronic conditions. Using an omnichannel approach, their apps gather as much data as possible from sources including remote monitoring devices, like wearables, and clinical data.Chief Analytics Officer, Dr. Anand Iyer, and Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Mansur Shomali, explain how Welldoc uses AI to parse the patient information, ultimately helping doctors and patients work together to construct an effective path to wellness.Jessica Robinson is Chief Platform Officer for health care digital developer The Garage. Jessica manages all aspects of the product life cycle, from the spark of innovation through design, development, testing, and roll-out. Founded in 2012, The Garage aims to utilize digital tools to help providers shift from fee for service models to value-based models of care.In this interview, recorded live at NCQA's 2023 Health Innovation Summit, Jessica explains how The Garage works with Management Service and Accountable Care organizations, among other provider groups, to develop digital applications that help clinically integrated networks across 34 states harness the full extent of the population data available to them. The Garage also utilize NCQA's HEDIS measures into their platform, allowing networks to visualize the full patient care team across the entire care continuum and deliver optimized quality care to their patients. For information on NCQA's Health Equity Forum, click here: https://events.ncqa.org/healthequityforum

Here’s a vital question, “How do you make sure that the physicians your employees or members are seeing are high quality in a given area of focus?” Getting to the right doctor matters when you consider that something like 70% of back surgeries are unnecessary and medical errors are the third leading cause of death in this country. And also because, as Suzanne DelBanco put it in EP224, if a payer simply cuts out the bottom performing 10% of practices, the returns are outsized from a cost and quality perspective. The challenge is how to actually accomplish this. How to measure quality in a sea of dirty data and noise and whatever the opposite of interoperability and aggregated data sets is. With the confounding factor also that outcomes are rarely if ever included in data sets, especially when you consider that the outcomes that matter to patients are really the outcomes that count. Today I speak with Suzanne Clough, MD. In a former life, Suzanne was a co-founder of Welldoc, the first FDA-approved digital health platform and also featured on EP102 of this podcast. Now, Suzanne is the chief-medical officer over at ArmadaHealth, a company that aims to become a GPS for health care helping to get patients to the right doctor quicker. The platform enables precision matching of physicians with patients based on diagnosis/condition and nonclinical attributes. Before ArmadaHealth, Suzanne was a co-Founder and Chief Medical Officer of WellDoc, the first FDA-approved digital health platform. William Gibson, the noted science fiction author wrote, "the future is already here, it’s just not widely distributed yet."  Our guest this week describes a future revolution in healthcare that is, in fact, already here.  Digital health therapeutics are transforming the delivery and experience of medical care and rapidly gaining traction in healthcare delivery.Anand Iyer, the Chief Strategy Officer for Welldoc, has been engaged in digital health for well over a decade.  He is a respected global digital health leader.  Anand has a doctorate in computer and electrical engineering as well as a MBA from Carnegie Mellon.  Anand and his colleagues are part of a large and growing community of cutting-edge digital entrepreneurs that are building the technologic infrastructure and capabilities to enable a completely different approach to medical care.  In this interview, Anand describes the digital therapeutics that are being used to provide clinical care to patients with chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension.  To date, Welldoc’s FDA approved digital therapeutic, Blue Star, has been used by tens of thousands of healthcare consumers with diabetes. In addition, in this episode Anand shares the following:How digital health software and algorithms are becoming FDA-approved and regulated therapeutics, similar to medications and medical devices. The three main facets of the Blue Star digital health program - targeted at patients, providers and health systems. The requirements for the acceptance and adoption of digital health into mainstream clinical delivery. Why digital health is the only viable option in addressing numerous chronic diseases that are advancing at epidemic proportion. Why digital health presents a great solution to some of the challenges in providing optimal care to the Medicaid population - addressing some of the existing inequities in quality, accessibility, affordability and engagement. How different digital health platforms are beginning to coalesce, affording users a singular, non-fragmented, seamless experience. It is remarkable that Anand and his colleagues understood this potential well over a decade ago - the use of digital apps to treat diabetes, hypertension, depression, heart failure and numerous other chronic diseases.  Given their forethought, Anand asks us to imagine what digital technology and advanced analytics will be able to accomplish in the next 5 years. The use of: 24/7 real-time biometric recording and psychosocial/consumer information; coupled with machine learning, artificial intelligence, predictive analytics, voice technologies, natural language processing and avatars; plus new coordinating & integrating operating platforms - will enable unimagined advances in medical care.  Three closing thoughts:The take-home point is that digital health will almost certainly be a profound (and perhaps unprecedented) enabler in making high-quality healthcare accessible, affordable and sustainable - for everyone.Digital health will also be a major enabler in engaging healthcare consumers, finally breaking the quality & outcomes barrier we’ve been unable to penetrate over the past couple of decades.  Although digital technology is going to be a game-changing enabler, our purpose should not be to digitize healthcare, but to humanize it.As always, I am very interested in hearing your thoughts about this exciting domain of creating a new healthcare. This will be one of a number of upcoming interviews focused on digital health.Until next time, be well!Zeev
