Daniel Scharff, founder of Startup CPG, joins the Grow Everything podcast to share how he built the world's largest community for emerging consumer brands. With 35,000 members in their Slack channel and over 75 in-person events annually, Startup CPG is democratizing access to retail buyers, investors, and industry resources that would typically cost founders thousands in consulting fees. Daniel discusses the harsh realities of CPG entrepreneurship—including why only 20-25% of brands survive beyond a few years—and shares his playbook for success: prioritize great branding and taste over health claims, build scrappy and resourceful, and delay fundraising until you can command a meaningful valuation. He reveals patterns he's observed across thousands of brands, from the danger of copycat products in oversaturated categories (looking at you, chili crisps and prebiotic sodas) to the power of in-person connections for discovering innovation. Daniel also explains why Startup CPG operates on a "do good, do well" model, offering free resources to brands while building a sustainable business through sponsorships and events—and why he believes this approach could transform other industries beyond CPG.Grow Everything brings the bioeconomy to life. Memorable Quotes: “Whatever story you tell yourself becomes your reality—choose a story that empowers you.” “Healing doesn't happen in isolation; it happens when the whole community comes together.” “Resilience is not about avoiding adversity; it's about thriving through it.”

In this episode of Thought Leadership Leverage, host Bill Sherman sits down with Constance Scharff, PhD, a trailblazer in the field of mental health research. Constance is the founder of the Institute for Complementary and Indigenous Mental Health Research and author of an upcoming book on "Everyday Bravery." Everyday bravery isn't about heroic acts like running into burning buildings. Constance redefines it as the courage found in everyday life—like battling addiction, where survival alone is an act of immense bravery. Having been sober for 26 years herself, Constance knows this firsthand. Her research reveals the quiet yet powerful ways people confront challenges and carry themselves with dignity, even in the face of overwhelming odds. Constance aims to make her research accessible to everyone, choosing to write books instead of academic papers. She believes mental health research should be available to the public, especially in the U.S., where affordable care is scarce. By blending memoir with academic research, she offers a personal and relatable perspective on the complex issues she studies. Her journey into the field started 15 years ago at the intersection of addiction and trauma. A tragic loss drove her to explore the courage it takes to keep fighting against addiction. Her research took her across the globe—from New York's Stonewall Inn to the jungles of Ecuador—uncovering stories of resilience and bravery in unexpected places. Constance hopes her work will inspire others to see that recovery and resilience are possible, even against all odds. She challenges the over-pathologization of mental health in Western culture and advocates for a broader, more inclusive approach to mental well-being. Three Key Takeaways: • Redefining Everyday Bravery: Everyday bravery isn't about grand heroic acts but the quiet courage found in overcoming daily challenges, like battling addiction or navigating trauma with dignity. • Making Mental Health Research Accessible: Constance Scharff prioritizes writing books over academic papers to make complex mental health research accessible to the public, especially in a landscape where affordable care is limited. • Global Perspective on Mental Health: Her research highlights the resilience found in diverse cultures worldwide, challenging the Western focus on pharmaceuticals and advocating for a more inclusive approach to mental health treatment. Constance has an impactful blend of research and storytelling that she uses to spread her thought leadership. If you'd like to understand how Academic Research can be used to build your thought leadership platform be sure to watch this short video with Peter Winick.

There's something extremely admirable about those that “fight for the little guy.” Having worked in large CPG conglomerates like Mars, Daniel Scharff knew the advantages these mega companies have over small brands scratching and crawling for any opportunity. So, in late-2019…he began hosting Bay Area events that gave founders of the smallest emerging CPG brands a chance to demo products and network. But we all know what happened next, though being forced to pivot towards building virtual community the following year might have been the silver lining for Startup CPG. Instead of pausing everything, Daniel didn't lose sight of his original intent. These smallest CPG brands were most affected by delays in planogram resets, so Startup CPG quickly developed helpful content, tools, platforms, and creatively sourced other incredible sales opportunities that helped minimize negative impact. And it was that initial value provided, when founders arguably needed it the most, that reverberated quickly amongst the community, thus helping catapult Startup CPG into becoming the largest and fastest growing CPG community. In our conversation, Daniel explains how this business growth has allowed Startup CPG to host more community events around the country, launch even bigger programs to help brands with what matters most, and form influential strategic partnerships. Moreover, and relating to that last point with its “GNC Next Big Thing” contest…we talk about the power of authentically putting yourself out there and staying real and transparent. But these are just a few of the fascinating topics within our recent conversation… FOLLOW ME ON MY SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNTS LINKEDIN YOUTUBE TWITTER INSTAGRAM FACEBOOK --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/joshua-schall/support

Today I am so excited to have Akilah Scharff-Teoh, Founder of the Life Force Unit, on the podcast for #29DaysofMagic! We chat about her working as a telemarketer, selling home improvements and re-financing as a 14 year old! Akilah shares about how much more difficult it is to make something happen in a highly bureaucratic environment and once you can run a $2 million project you can run your own business. We discuss why building teams with equity in mind from day one is much more sustainable. We talk about how crazy it is that many of the commitments to diversity, equity and inclusion during 2020 seem to have gone away. We chat about how important it is to bring people with you as you are going along, there is no standing alone atop a mountain! Akilah would like you to examine your assumptions when interacting with other people.
You can now join the She Collective Profit School : https://bit.ly/Profitschool If you're feeling lost or stuck in your career, seek coaching. A coach can help you set goals and figure out a plan to achieve them. They can also provide guidance and support as you navigate your career journey. If you need to figure out whether coaching is right for you, Misty suggests taking a chance and giving it a try. After all, what do you have to lose? Coaching is all about helping individuals reach their goals, and that means tailoring the coaching process to fit each person's needs. One-size-fits-all coaching approaches simply don't work because everyone is different. That's why it's essential to have a coaching process that is all about the individual and not just a cookie-cutter process that looks at what the individual needs to be more relevant. When coaching is all about the individual, it helps the person reach their goals faster and more effectively.

For over a decade Jared Scharff was the lead guitarist for the Saturday Night Live Band, as he still was when we did this interview during the freewheeling, pre-pandemic Before Times. He has since left the show and relocated to Los Angeles to pursue a career as a songwriter, a session musician, and a solo artist, releasing music under the name Pearl Lion. The move seems to have paid off: on his own and as part of the production team Queen Sixties, Scharff has been a part of four albums that debuted at Number 1 in the past two years, by a diverse range of artists from Da Baby to Machine Gun Kelly. Jared joined Anthony to discuss Radiohead's iconic 1997 masterpiece Ok Computer. An album of this depth, magnitude, and detail required adequate and appropriate fortification, so Anthony chose two huge names in California Zinfandel, to reflect the album's moody grace and dead-serious themes: a 2018 Ridge East Bench Zin and a 2015 Ravenswood Big River Zin. Two expressions of the same varietal were chosen to mirror both the album's ethereal, angelic harmonies and its gloomy, deep, and dour dissection of contemporary consumer culture. Guest: Jared Scharff Album: Radiohead, Ok Computer Wine: Ridge, East Bench Zin 2018 and Ravenswood, Big River Zin, 2015

"I want people to know that there is recovery and there is hope." - Constance Scharff, PhD Tens of thousands of Americans die from substance abuse and suicide each year. Millions more suffer from mental health disorders. Rock to Recovery -- an innovative, therapeutic music program serving more than one hundred addiction treatment and mental health facilities in the USA -- steps into the breach to offer participants help and hope. By writing, playing, and recording music as a group, non-musicians are able to build a community of support, find enthusiasm for treatment, and realize that recovery is possible. Veterans, trauma survivors, and those struggling with substance abuse or mental health issues can recover with connection. This book contains eighteen stories of people who have used Rock to Recovery's music program to live a better life. You too can use music to heal. "Music Is the Medicine!"
