When Black Orchid Empire have new music, we all pay attention. They create huge, memorable rock music that combines heavy-hitting savagery with intense melodic beauty. Their technical, fearlessly complex grooves and gigantic sing-along choruses have already earned them a widespread fanbase. It's not just on record though either, as they are a ferociously tight live band. Having toured Europe and the UK extensively, supporting Skunk Anansie, HED P.E, INME, Cellar Darling and Black Map as well as festival slots at Download, Standon Calling, Tech Fest, Teddy Rocks and Planet Rockstock. Following on from album releases with Long Branch Records and Season of Mist, the band have now sign with a brand-new label and have released the song ‘Angelfire', the first single from their upcoming album. The single release also comes ahead of their highly anticipated Spring UK tour. We spoke to guitarist and vocalist, Paul about the new single. Not just delving into the creative process but finding out more about the band's long-term plans and why it is so exciting. We also talk about how Black Orchid Empire have got to this point in time, the work that goes into creating something, being so ‘hands on', and so much more. Fresh off a relentless touring schedule across the United States and Europe, HED PE are ready to conquer Australia once again and, for the first time since 2018, New Zealand.HED P.E. has been a cornerstone in the rock and metal scene, captivating audiences with their unique blend of rock, punk, rasta, gangsta rap, and soul. Many bands three decades into their career would be happy to tread the boards and play for the nostalgia, but not HED P.E. Their most recent and incredibly fifteenth album, Detox, was released in December 2023 and shows a band with no time to sit on their hands and muse about the past. Detox is a crushing return to the G-Punk sound that the band's fans know and adore.HEAVY sat down with frontman Jahred Gomes on the eve of the tour.Jahred described HED P.E's live performances as a journey that incorporates various musical styles, including hardcore, punk, reggae, and hip-hop, and reflected on the positive reception of the album and their recent UK tour. He emphasized the importance of creating new music and touring, despite industry challenges, and acknowledged the band's ability to connect with diverse audiences. He confirmed that a secret record is in the works, which will be announced soon, plus reminisced about the early days of HED P.E. and how they have changed as a band over the course of their career and plenty more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Beating Addiction & Chasing Your Dreams Wesley Geer is a professional guitar player, songwriter, recording artist, and producer, who signed his first record deal to Jive Records with the band he founded, (Hed) P.E. Wes toured the world for nearly a decade, and the band sold over 1 million records worldwide. What many didn't know at the time was while he was masterminding, and leading his band to the member's first-ever record deal, Wes was a full-blown drug addict, using alcohol, methamphetamines and other drugs, daily, for years. Subscribe for more recovery livestreams and information! / @pejtheaddictioninterventionist As a progressive disease, no matter the efforts to quell his addiction and control it, things continually got worse. After nearly a decade of touring the world, with the biggest names in rock, Wes' life was imploding, and he finally left in 2003, for a ‘lifestyle change' that ultimately ended him up in rehab in 2004. In rehab, he learned tools for recovery and latched onto the stories of others that had overcome their addictions, stories of people being so far down in a deadly hole, but somehow not only got sober but achieved great things. The following years found Wes as an instructor at Fusion Academy & Learning Center, an alternative school where he taught music to 6th through 12th graders who had struggled in more traditional academic settings. These same troubled students often succeeded in Fusion's adaptive one-on-one learning environment. Geer's love of teaching blossomed during his time. His classes served as the earliest prototype for R2R; he and one student at a time would write and play songs together. Geer said he quickly noticed “the engagement and the buy-in” the students had in these sessions was much greater than a typical ‘lesson' as the student's energy was transformed with hope and self-esteem while songwriting and playing music together. In 2010, Wes decided he wanted to get back into music and started praying and meditating on what that would look like. Not long after, and only because he was sober, Geer was offered the gig as a guitarist with the legendary rock band Korn. He traveled the world, performing in more than 40 countries with the multi-platinum stars, as well as appeared numerous live televised and studio recording sessions. Geer was then moved to give back, wanting to create something that could help people who struggled the same way he had. He then founded Rock to Recovery (R2R), a non-profit organization created on 12/12/12 with the purpose of providing those in various types of treatment and recovery programs the cathartic, uplifting, healing experience of connectivity through playing music. It's a therapy Geer himself turned to after years of abusing drugs and alcohol. During his stay in rehab, he admits that music was his “most intimate friend” during his darkest days, allowing him to cope with the rollercoaster of emotions that consumed his early days in treatment. My name is Pej and I am a drug and alcohol interventionist! I am 15 years sober from Marijuana, Meth, Heroin, and a whole lot more. Burning Witches vocalist Laura Guldemond is our guest this week on The MetalSucks Podcast! We discuss the writing process for their latest record The Dark Tower, the lyrical inspiration that Countess Bathory played, the importance of the comic book style cover art the band strives for with each release, touring on a cruise, getting sea sick and still performing, the importance of social media for bands in modern times, the craziest time she had at a metal show as a fan, and if she gets more energy from the audience singing or moshing during live shows. Petar and Brandon breakdown the video of Crazy Town singers getting into an ugly fight, Hed(P.E.) kicking them off the tour because of the video, and Bam Margera threatening to kill his family before turning himself into the police. Formed in 2004 out of Sparrows Point, Maryland, Chrystal James is the face and soul of the post industrial hard rock band Anoxia. Knowing the potential of this band, there were a number of line up changes made over the years; each one improving and building on what became a local powerhouse with heavy riffs over electronic keys, layered with powerful and at times ethereal vocals. Anoxia went on to share the stage with bands such as Saving Able, Adema, Hed P.E., Soil, the late Wayne Static of Static-X, as well as members of Anoxia sharing the stage with Starset, Gemini Syndrome and 10 Years. In 2014, the band took a hiatus due to ...well... life. Seven long years later Chrystal and Dan decided to reignite the fires of Anoxia, answering the call of the Shadow Phoenix to once again rise from the ashes to reclaim her throne! When Sonny Mayo was growing up, he had tendencies of manic depression often. He started using drugs and felt like this released him from the anxieties and problems he had in his life. This led him on the path of addiction, and he heavily relied on it; mentally and physically. Sonny got into treatment at the age of 16 after abusing Dexedrine with a friend of his. He wouldn't eat, wouldn't drink, and pushed everyone that cared about him away. One of his lowest lows around this time was smoking meth in an airplane bathroom during an international flight. One night he came home to his mother high on acid, claiming he had a message for her and that she should treat him like the messiah. The next day, he was in rehab. He hated it at first & didn't feel like he belonged there. But after a while, it started to connect with him and he finally committed to getting better. In 2009, Sonny went to recording school in Los Angeles and got his certification for Pro Tools, and has been recording many artists and friends in the Los Angeles area. Since 2014, Sonny has been on the board of directors for Rock To Recovery, which helps to bring music to people in various stages of drug & alcohol recovery, people suffering from PTSD, and other mental health issues. They write songs with the patients, work a lot with veteran organizations, and have written over 21,000 songs so far. We also talk about his music career with Snot, Sevendust, Hed P.E., and more. A party album to put Andrew W.K to shame, (hed) p.e seemed to be at the forefront of combining hip hop with rock, vinyl samples with screaming and later in the band's career, going on deep conspiracy filled rants well before Q began posting cryptic messages online. But what about the lyrics? What about the way singer Gomes sings about women? Should that detract from the enjoyment of the album? We'll be trying to navigate our way through that one as well as looking at some of the small things (hed) p.e add to their songs to give them a bit more life. I mean, we talk about way more as well. There's a solid Jamiroquai joke in there that I don't think got the response it should have. There's a good Gumball rally reference. We've got a return sponsor, there's a game that you might need a paper and pen for. Actually, now that I think of it, this is another soon to be award winning episode from a soon to be award winning podcast. Trigger warning: This episode discusses violence against women.
Wesley Geer has been a professional musician for over 20 years. He first found success as the founding member of Jive Records artist Hed P.E. as guitarist, songwriter, and producer. After touring the world for eight years, Wes left the band for a lifestyle change and ultimately landed in rehab. Then in 2010, at almost three years sober, he was approached to play with the legendary band Korn. He joined Korn and worked with them as their touring guitarist for the next several years, traveling to 42 countries, headlining shows, playing to crowds of 80,000 people, and appearing on a number of recordings and cable and TV shows. His music has been featured in many feature films, video games, radio, and television shows.Wes also has long had a passion for teaching music. Previously a music teacher at The Fusion Academy's Huntington Beach campus, Wes taught Recording Arts, Drums, and Guitar.“I've always had a desire to teach and help people through music. It was while teaching at Fusion Academy, that I really realized the level of engagement the students would have when we were ‘writing a song' together, and then record it! It gave such a greater sense of purpose to our music. and a greater connection between us.But it was when I was in treatment that I realized how much music could help [me] get through those tough emotions that run so rampant, especially in the early days. Being totally sober and dealing with the bottom I had hit -strumming the guitar was the only thing that would bring me peace. Everyone would wait in line for their turn to play, even people who had never played guitar. These ingredients really helped me realize this combination had the potential to be a powerful tool within the recovery community. When I looked around, music seemed to be missing from the treatment curriculum. It became my dream to create a music program that could help all those in need.". . . Wes Geer has had a star studded music career, touring all over the world performing to huge crowds. We see the lifestyle of a touring musician depicted in films and shows, and alcohol and drug abuse often have a starring role in those stories. In this weeks podcast, Lauren Burnison interviews Wes Geer about his experiences, how he found sobriety, and what it's like to wear this new identity in an industry that often centres itself around partying.Who is Wes Geer?Wes Geer (Wesley) has been a professional musician for over 20 years. He first found success as the founding member of Jive Records artist Hed P.E. as guitarist, songwriter and producer. After touring the world for eight years, Wes left the band for a lifestyle change and ultimately landed in rehab. In 2010, at almost three years sober, he was approached to play with the legendary band Korn. He joined Korn and worked with them as their touring guitarist for the next several years, traveling to 42 countries, headlining shows, playing to crowds of 80,000 people, and appearing on a number of recordings and cable and TV shows. His music has been featured in many feature films, video games, radio, and television shows. Wes founded Rock To Recovery, a service that helps people to find recovery from substance abuse, with music as a key part of that journey.Who is Lauren Burnison?Lauren Burnison stopped drinking in 2016. Visiting an Andalusian town called Ronda inspired her to create alcohol-free travel experiences. Her mission is to show people that there is a fulfilling life outside of alcohol and that there are others just like them. Adventure, spending time in nature and connecting with culture play a key role in the experiences she creates. If you're interested in joining one of her sober trips, check out We Love Lucid. She is currently focussing on things here in the UK due to Covid-19, but is hoping to get back to sober travel abroad next year.Support the show (https://joinclubsoda.com/product/tip-jar-support-club-soda/)
Welcome to another episode from Setting The Tone. To kick off this week's reviews we THE FINAL CLAUSE OF TACITUS THE FINAL CLAUSE OF TACITUS Emerging UK crossover crew THE FINAL CLAUSE OF TACITUS return with an exhilarating new EP, Asinine Music for the Solemn and Staid, out on Friday 14th May. The eclectic threesome have also just delivered a brand new single and video, Something's Gonna Break - https://youtu.be/yEBN5qFMKgM . Reading-based THE FINAL CLAUSE OF TACITUS have been serving up their enticing brand of groove-heavy riffs, fused with funk and rock since their formation in 2016. Channelling everyone from the Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Skunk Anansie, through to Korn and Rage Against The Machine, THE FINAL CLAUSE OF TACITUS express a sound that is drenched in groove and loaded with boundless energy. Playing live shows with the likes of (Hed) P.E, Electric 6, DJ Lethal, Senser, 808 State, Hacktivist, Skindred and Crazy Town has only helped to tighten the band's sound and stage presence, and further increase their profile. To date, THE FINAL CLAUSE OF TACITUS have dropped two Eps, which garnered a raft of radio airplay and reviews, including strong praise from Kerrang! And in 2019, the band also unleashed their first full album, Antiquity, which included an accompanying full animated story. During the coronavirus lockdown, the trio began work on their next EP entitled Asinine Music for the Solemn and Staid. The record was self-mastered and self-produced across the band's own individual studios and the result is a stunning five track EP comprising collaborations with Jahred Gomes from (Hed) P.E and Georgi Valentine from Mother Vulture. Vocalist Matt Dune remarks about the record: “Born out of the flames of 2020, when the world as we knew it changed, this record tackles face first the feelings of despair and anger we all have been feeling this past year. It pulls in a more aggressive sound, producing anthems of anger with each song giving you a different message to unite in our anguish together.” Track listing: 1. Something's Gonna Break; 2. War Cry (feat. Georgi Valentine); 3. Not Today (feat. Jahred Gomes); 4. All Figured Out; 5. I Can't Talk to You. THE FINAL CLAUSE OF TACITUS on line www.facebook.com/tfcot www.instagram.com/tfcot https://open.spotify.com/artist/0TFZpjHci90btz997FqoZx My thoughts we start the show off with a track that has a lot of energy, packed with riff and grove, I enjoyed somethings gonna break, its clear this track is heavy influenced by bands like Rage against the machine to Red hot chilli peppers and Beastie boys production is awesome on this track so many diffetnt sounds coming off it. Overall a great track to start with. German modern metal outfit Venues have released their new single 'Rite Of Passage'. The band have also announced their new album Solace, due for release on 27th August via Arising Empire. Watch the video to 'Rite Of Passage' here: https://youtu.be/tiPFQNDrGRs Stream / purchase 'Rite Of Passage' here: https://Venues.lnk.to/riteofpassage Pre-order Solace here: https://Venues.lnk.to/solace The thumping and monumental ‘Rite of Passage' is a very personal song, exploring the relationship with one's father, erupting into a chorus made for arenas. From the depths of their deepest crisis, Venues emerge victoriously, welcoming two new members - clean vocalist Lela and guitarist Valentin. When former vocalist Nyves quit the band mid-tour, following the release of their pivotal debut Aspire (2019), the modern metal juggernaut was shaken to the bone. Despite this, the remaining members refused to give up and tirelessly searched for new talent. Following guitarist Constantin witnessing a performance of Lela at (of all places) at a Steel Panther show, the band found their new clean vocalist. Venues went into the studio with producer Christoph Wieczorek (Annisokay) to record Solace, who coated their massive sound with a metallic alloy of remarkable precision. “We wanted to be more metal,” Robin comments. “There were some pop sensibilities of Aspire we wanted to replace with rather the opposite.” Melody and punch-drunk heaviness, metal and alternative rock, zeitgeist and authenticity, barbed choruses and unleashed creativity: with their soaring sophomore release, Venues fulfil every single promise they gave on Aspire. “2020 showed all of us how much the band is helping us keep our sanity,” guitarist Robin muses. “Almost the whole band went through minor or medium crises since the release of our debut. Relationships went sour, things were ended and begun. In times like these, our second album was the light at the end of the tunnel. Something we all could look forward to. Our music held our heads above water.” It's a big leap, going from Aspire to Solace, and it's a logical one, too. Ten songs, ten exorcisms of negative energy, ten lifesavers. Venues are: Lela | clean vocals Robin | shouts Constantin | guitar Valentin | guitar Dennis | drums Venues online: www.facebook.com/venuesofficial www.instagram.com/venuesofficial https://twitter.com/venuesofficial https://venues.bigcartel.com/ My thoughts this for me is a track that has so many different sounds/influences packed into one song, I can hear elements of metalcore, metal, pop. For me it's packed with influences from the likes of Nightwish to Amon Amarth to Arch Enemy,Kill switch engaged, a high octane track that does not stick to one path there is so much going on here from soaring melodies and hooks to crushing guitars riffs and solos, honestly if you are in love with metal/hard rock then there will be something for you to take away from this track a band to certainty to keep your eyes on in 2021! Moving over to our last band this week! Palps are a 4-piece Emo band from Essex, UK. The band began after a long spell of illness meant that singer/guitarist Alex, had nothing else to do except write music. After recruiting the immensely talented Hayden, Liam and Dan, Palps was born. Taking influence from a multitude of 90's and early 2000's bands, Palps attempt to put their own spin on the genre. This creates a sound which is powerful, often poignant but always straight from the heart. Covering subjects such as mental health, failed relationships and finding one's place in the world, Palps is as much an outlet as it is a band. A real time window into someone's attempts to get better. After releasing their first EP 'Letters to you, that I'll never send' to an overwhelmingly positive reception in March of 2020, Palps are now looking to really establish themselves as a recognisable name within the UK scene. Multiple national lockdowns through 2020 meant the band were unable to gig for much of the year but they were due to perform in the finals of the Undiscovered battle of the bands and were nominated for originals band of the year at The Panic Awards. Aliens was originally written when I had just started a new job and was hoping to finally enjoy a new career and some financial security. I have previously struggled to hold down jobs long term due to various issues, mostly mental health related. The lyrics are about having an opportunity but ultimately knowing that you are doomed to fail. The idea that I feel like I am pretending to be normal and wishing I could deal with the monotony. Feeling like an Alien. Palps would welcome any opportunities for features, reviews or interviews Check out Aliens here https://youtu.be/y-3oPaJGjAE Palps online https://www.facebook.com/palpsuk https://www.instagram.com/palps_uk/ https://open.spotify.com/artist/27ZUV0lAfcK0KlksrU0sd2 https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/palps/aliens Palps -Aliens Aliens' a song about missed opportunity, not fitting in and craving the normal life that you know you can't have." - Palps Aliens starts with a soft gentle build of some lovely melodic guitar tones accompanied by an incredible drum fill .the track gains momentum in terms of energy and speed, its packed with hooks and plenty of melody. The track is crisp its clean, what I really love for me it's so easy to listen too something really nice to chill out too, certainly for fans of bands like hands like houses, Alex is on fire, Don Broco overall I really enjoyed Aliens its really awesome when something unexpected comes into your mail box, one of the tracks of this week.

Wes toured the world for nearly a decade, and the band sold over 1 million records worldwide. He also lived a rock star's lifestyle with full blown addiction and self- destructive behavior. After touring the world several times over Geer was then moved to give back, wanting to create something that could help people who struggled the same way he had. Wesley Geer is a professional guitar player, songwriter, recording artist, and producer, who signed his first record deal to Jive Records with the band he founded, (Hed) P.E. Wes toured the world for nearly a decade, and the band sold over 1 million records worldwide. Their music was on high rotation on MTV, radio stations, as well as having numerous placements in popular feature films, TV and video games. What many didn't know at the time was while he was masterminding, and leading his band to the member's first-ever record deal, Wes was a full-blown drug addict, using alcohol, methamphetamines and other drugs, daily, for years. As a progressive disease, no matter the efforts to quell his addiction and control it, things continually got worse. After a nearly a decade of touring the world, with the biggest names in rock, Wes' life was imploding, and he finally left in 2003, for a ‘lifestyle change' that ultimately ended him up in rehab in 2004. In rehab, he learned tools for recovery and latched onto the stories of others that had overcome their addictions, stories of people being so far down in a deadly hole, but somehow not only got sober but achieved great things. “These stories of hope were the guiding force that leads me out. These people had a tangible program of recovery proven to work, so I gave it a shot.” The following years found Wes as an instructor at Fusion Academy & Learning Center, an alternative school where he taught music to 6th through 12th graders who had struggled in more traditional academic settings. He traveled the world performing in more than 40 countries with the multi-platinum stars, as well as appeared numerous live televised and studio recording sessions. Geer was moved to give back, wanting to create something that could help people who struggled the same way he had. He founded Rock to Recovery (R2R), a non-profit organization created in late 2012 with the purpose of providing those in various types of treatment and recovery programs the cathartic, uplifting, healing experience of connectivity through playing music. It's a therapy Geer himself turned to after years of abusing drugs and alcohol. During his stay in rehab, he admits that music was his “most intimate friend” during his darkest days, allowing him to cope with the rollercoaster of emotions that consumed his early days in treatment. “I remember being so raw, newly sober. I picked up my guitar and I just started strumming, and that simple act of strumming a few chords had an impact on me like never before. The whole milieu would write these silly songs and we'd forget everything, and even the darkest, shy personalities would start singing and dancing. That always stuck with me.” Rock to Recovery, with Geer and his staff of 9 fellow sober musicians now partner with over 100 treatment programs across LA, Orange, and San Diego counties, providing more nearly 450+ sessions each month to people struggling with addiction, mental health, eating disorders, at–risk youth, and Wounded Warriors.
