Today's guest is not only arguably one of the best- most innovative artists in the world. But he is also a spectacular human being. A local of Sacramento, David Garibaldi has raised over 6 million dollars for charity through his art. And he's not done making moves yet. In today's episode, we get into how David got to where he is today by creatively combining his passions rather than going a "traditional" route. His journey hasn't been without its obstacles. But that's the true test of success. How will you innovate? DAVID GARIBALDI David Garibaldi is an American performance painter with his specialty lying in his "Rhythm and Hue" stage act. An act in which he rapidly creates paintings of notable rock musicians. His show Rhythm and Hue is a music and color experience. Large pop portraits explode together on stage in minutes to music. Garibaldi was born in Los Angeles, California, attending High School in Sacramento California, where he later dropped out. David gained notoriety when he first appeared in the seventh season of America's Got Talent, going on to the finals and finishing in fourth place. Acts that Garibaldi has gone on to open for during his career include Blue Man Group, Snoop Dogg, and Kiss. He has also performed for President Obama at The White House and appeared on The Today Show, ESPN, & International TV. In this episode Dan Tohill interviews David James the Chief Learning Officer at Looop and Podcast Host of The Learning & Development Podcast. David James discusses the challenges in learning and development and how we're in for a tough time as a result of the pandemic as we're set to make up for lost opportunities in harsh economic circumstances. In this episode David shares his ideas on: Accelerated apprenticeships - when it really mattered we didn't do any training at all Why are we trying to solve problems that Google already has covered? Performance support and performance consulting are key learning tools often undervalued. L&D today can get stuck in administering and delivering courses whilst not taking into consideration performance in a meaningful way. Where David believes the future of learning and development should be focussed on: Eliminating the administration in learning and development for more efficiency. High levels of automation in L&D focussed on the employee working experience - not trying to create a parallel learning experience. Being more data driven and demonstrating the value and impact of learning. The formative understanding of data, showing where the critical points of failure are in the organisation and addressing those issues directly. David has been a People Development professional for more than 20 years, most notably as Director of Talent, Learning & OD for The Walt Disney Company across Europe, the Middle East & Africa. As well as being the Chief Learning Strategist at Looop, David is a prominent writer and speaker on topics around modern and digital L&D as well as an active member of the CIPD L&D Advisory Board. David Pere joined the Marine Corps in August of 2008. Since that time, he has lived traveled to and lived in many unique places around the world, including a combat tour in Afghanistan. His awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and Combat Action Ribbon. David got started in real estate investing in 2015 after reading “Rich Dad Poor Dad” by Robert Kiyosaki. He house-hacked a duplex with the FHA loan and lived in it for a little while until getting married to his beautiful wife, Kimberly, and receiving orders to Hawaii. David and Kimberly have two children, Cody (10) and Jackson (2). While stationed in Hawaii, David bought a 10-unit apartment in Missouri and was able to use bank-financing, seller-financing, and a home equity line of credit to purchase this property with less than 6% down (and great terms)! Through these experiences, From Military to Millionaire was born, with the goal of teaching personal finance and real estate investing to service members and the working class! Second Baptist Church - Houston, TX | 1 Samuel 24 recounts David hiding in a cave from his ruthless pursuer, King Saul. During this scene, David is tempted in two main ways: 1) to despair because of his circumstances, and 2) to take matters into his own hands so that he wouldn't despair. Where David finds strength to resist both temptations--to despair and to take control--shows us where we can find strength to resist temptations in our own circumstances as well. 1 Samuel 24 and its counterpart, Psalm 57, reveal to us a powerful concept in Scripture: faith in future grace empowers obedience, hope, and praise.
The time for madness has finally arrived. Where David gets a chance to take down Goliath. Where men stake their entire tax returns on the low probability of winning their bracket challenge. Where your friend’s mom fills out a bracket solely based on the names of the team mascots and still wins. Where giants fall and no name schools take their place. David Gessner is an author, a professor, and one of the leading contemporary voices on the natural world and the American West. He has written ten books, including “All the Wild That Remains: Edward Abbey, Wallace Stegner, and the American West,” which is one of my all-time favorites and was a former Mountain & Prairie Book Club selection. Thanks to his influences ranging from Henry David Thoreau to Theodore Roosevelt to Wendell Berry, David preaches the gospel of appreciating “place" and protecting our wild landscapes, public lands, and fragile Western ecosystem. • I’ve been a huge fan of David’s work for many years, and have read almost everything he has written. I cannot overstate how much his writing has helped me understand both the history and the modern-day challenges of the American West, as well as the individuals who have shaped the region. Through his masterful prose, he combines history, current events, deep personal insights, and a hilarious sense of humor into amazingly impactful books. Without his writing, my interest in land conservation would be a fraction of what it is today. • David was in Colorado conducting research for a new book focused on public lands, Bears Ears, and Theodore Roosevelt, so we met up in Boulder for our conversation. In a little over an hour, we managed to cover a wide range of topics including public lands, Stegner, Abbey, TR, the idea of “Boomers and Stickers,” and the importance of place. David described how a bout with cancer helped to change his writing style and interests, and how moving to Boulder in his thirties altered the trajectory of his life and career. We discussed his writing process, his coastal writing shack, and how his approach to writing has evolved over the years. As usual, we also touched on favorite books, films, and his most powerful outdoor experience. • Meeting David and having this conversation was a dream come true for me, so many thanks to him for taking the time to chat. There are a lot of resources and other priceless information in this episode, so be sure to check the notes for links to everything. In the ancient world, kingly genealogies, like kingly cities, were constructed to establish a monarch's credibility, divinity, authenticity, and permanence. It should come as no surprise, then, that Matthew (like Genesis) deconstructs the king's genealogy by presenting a disruptive counter-narrative. Where Judah longs to boast, Matthew ridicules. Where David seeks credibility, Matthew discredits. Where Judah strives to build a city surrounded by high walls, Matthew breaches the same, paving the way for a new kind of king, one who rules an unseen city, made without walls and without human hands. Richard and Fr. Marc discuss Matthew 1:3. Employee to Stay-At-Home-Dad to Leading A 7-Figure Business Today, in the second half of our conversation with David Branderhorst, we talk about: David’s role in the Igniting Souls organization. The goal of the programs and products David and his partner are developing. What impact means. Where David finds his reward. David left a banking career to be a full time dad. As his kids entered school, he pursued entrepreneurial opportunities and now impacts people on a global scale. David worked with directly with the CFO and CEO of a regional bank and his wife had a successful career of her own. They had a baby, then had twins. There were cracks showing in the foundation of their marriage due to stress and exhaustion. David realized the outcome he and his wife wanted went far beyond survival. They agreed he should “walk away” from his career to invest his time as dad to his three children while his wife continued her career. When the kids were old enough to go to school, David began to search for a new career, but realized he wanted more than just a job. He eventually partnered with Kary Oberbrunner to build Igniting Souls, where he helps individuals and organizations clarify who they are, why they are here, and where they should invest their time and energy. Hear David Speak at the Igniting Souls Conference in October 2016. Access the show notes HERE.
It is said of David that he was a man after God’s own heart. When we look at this statement in the context of David’s life is it very reassuring. David had many failures as a man and a follower of God. Dr. Hughes examines David’s life and observes that if David could fall short in so many areas and still be favored of God, then we all have hope in life that we too can find favor with God. In all of his troubles, David seems to find blame in others. Paul on the other hand had a different outlook. Where David blamed everyone else for his problems, Paul looked to inward as the cause for his problems. Some people are not happy unless they are dealing with chaos and issues in their lives. We live in a world that makes it easy to not be content. David appears to have been such a person. Paul was content to be in whatever state he found himself. Bro. Hughes asks which side of the cross defines you? Are we defined like David, or like Paul. Yesterday either defines us or we must forget yesterday and move on.
