Discussion QuestionsSermon Overview A life worthy of the gospel is marked by a costly commitment to the gospel's progress in the world and the church's progress in the gospel.1. A life worthy of the gospel rejoices at the gospel's progress (vv. 12-18a)2. A life worthy of the gospel aims at Christ's honor through the church's progress (vv. 18b-26)3. A life worthy of the gospel endures together suffering for the gospel. (vv. 27-30)Digging Deeper    Read Philippians 1:12-301. Our eighth Defining Value as a church is “Commitment to Faithfully Pass the Gospel on to Others.” (You may want to reread this section of the Defining Values document below.)  What are some of the ways you see this value lived out in our life as a church? Are there ways you would like to see us grow in this? How so?   2. Verse 12 talks about the advance of the gospel. What does that mean?3. Even though Paul is in prison, the good news of Jesus spreads throughout the prison guards (v. 13) and encourages followers of Jesus to be bold in sharing the gospel too (v. 14). Where else in the Bible or in your own life have you experienced God using something that seems bad for good? (see Acts 2:23 for the ultimate example).4. Paul talks about groups of people with differing motivations for preaching the gospel: (1) out of envy and rivalry and (2) out of goodwill.  Surprisingly, Paul doesn't call this first group out and instead rejoices that Christ is proclaimed      (v. 18a). How should Paul's response affect the way we prioritize the spread of the gospel?      5. How might this passage and this sermon help us be a part of spreading the gospel to others?6. What would suffering for the gospel look like for us today? What's the worst that could happen if you share the gospel with a friend?7. What keeps us from sharing the gospel with others?8. How could the members of this Gospel Community help you share the gospel with others?9. Share if there's someone in your life that you'd love to know Jesus. How might God use you to share the gospel with them?PrayerDefining Value 8: At CrossWay we see ourselves, along with all Christians, as commissioned by God to engage with our local community and with the larger world in such a way that the Gospel is faithfully demonstrated and clearly proclaimed.  We also see it as a specific charge from God to pass on to our children a clear and complete doctrine and a compelling witness to the transforming grace of God, and by so doing, firmly establish the next generation in its faith in Jesus Christ.  CrossWay is committed to the advance of the gospel in our homes, in our community and in the world.

Discussion Questions Sermon Overview A life pleasing to God includes humbly, genuinely loving his people in the local church.Digging Deeper    Read Romans 12:3-101. Our seventh Defining Value as a church is “Growing Relationships within the Local Church.” (You may want to reread this section of the Defining Values document.)  What are some of the ways you see this value lived out in our life as a church? Are there ways you would like to see us grow in this? How so?   2. When you think of church (or “the church”), what comes to mind?3. Over the last twenty years or so, there has been a decline (accelerated by COVID), in church attendance, even among those who claim to be Bible-believing, evangelical Christians. What are some of the reasons people offer for not attending a local church (or not attending very often)?        4. How might this passage and this sermon help us as we seek (with humility, gentleness, and love) to encourage ourselves or those in our lives who are currently not attending church (not engaged in / participating in a local body), to consider a greater degree of engagement? 5. Pastor Brett helped us see from Rom. 12:3-10 that “A life pleasing to God includes humbly, genuinely loving his people in the local church.”  What are some of the reasons it can be hard to love God's people in our local church? 6. How does the Gospel provide the motivation and power we need to love others well?7. God calls us to humbly serve one another with the gifts he has given us (Rom. 12:3-8). What gift(s) has God given you? How are you using them to serve God's people? How might you grow in using the gift(s) he's given you more effectively? 8. One aspect of loving one another is dealing rightly with good and evil in ourselves and one another (“Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good.” v. 9b).  What is a specific situation in your life right now where God is calling you to do this? What might obedience to this verse in that situation look like for you? 9. God calls us to treat one another (within the church) as a family (“love one another with brotherly affection” v. 10a).  What is one specific concrete thing you could do this week to put this into practice? 10. One of the ways we can genuinely love one another is by “lead(ing) the way in putting others first.” (“Outdo one another in showing honor.” v. 10b). To whom in your life could you seek to show honor? How might you do that this week (in word or deed)? Is there anything in your heart that resists that? If so, please share.Prayer

Finally, they explore the future of customer success, emphasizing the need for strategic growth and the impact of AI and technology. Customer advocacy can drive new customer acquisition. Establishing clear KPIs is crucial for measuring success. Understanding customer needs is fundamental to delivering value. A success plan can help reset customer relationships. Effective communication is vital for customer engagement. Customer success teams should be proactive, not reactive. It's important to be opinionated about the value delivered. Personalization is crucial in both B2C and B2B contexts. NPS may not accurately predict customer renewals. Understanding the cost of acquiring and retaining customers is essential. Customer success teams should focus on value delivery, not just compliance. Engaging customers requires persuasive communication and urgency. Incentives for CSMs should align with customer growth, not just retention. High churn rates can be addressed with data-driven strategies. Celebrating internal successes boosts morale and recognition. AI will play a significant role in the future of customer success. He explains why this just isn't so. He compares and contrasts the intentions and conclusions of Keynes and Marx. He emphasizes the need to look beyond surface phenomena and understand the structure of the capitalist economy to determine the value of money. The conversation also goes into the importance of the federal job guarantee in setting wages and stabilizing the value of labor.L. Merry Christmas, dear listeners! We hope your festive season is filled with joy and warmth. Today marks another special BONUS episode in our Christmas week lineup, and we're diving into the crucial topic of helping Product Owners measure value. If you missed our previous episode on defining business value, be sure to check it out as today's content builds upon those insights. This episode, like all others this week, is a companion to the Coach Your Product Owner e-course, accessible at bit.ly/coachyourpo. Why We Need To Help Product Owners Measure Value Ever envisioned driving a familiar road blindfolded? Many teams find themselves in a similar predicament, knowing their backlog and delivery process well but lacking clarity on their goal. A backlog of items, as emphasized yesterday, is not a goal. Defining Value is Not Enough; We Must Measure It While some teams may define goals, many stumble when it comes to measuring them early and consistently. Aligning with the Agile Manifesto, this episode emphasizes why continuous delivery of valuable software needs to be complemented with the same continuous measurement of value! Leading and Lagging Indicators and Why That's Important In this episode, we discuss the distinction between leading and lagging indicators. Leading indicators provide insights into future events, while lagging indicators validate that the product is delivering value. Explore the significance of both in making informed decisions. The Difference Between Strategic Metrics and Day-to-Day Metrics (The Metrics Tree Technique) Building on yesterday's discussion about understanding the company's strategy, we explore the transition from strategic metrics (lagging indicators like revenue) to day-to-day metrics. This transition is essential for ensuring daily value delivery and supporting short-term, customer-focused experiments. In this segment, we discuss the Metrics Tree technique which Vasco learned from Chris Matts. Product Dashboards for the PO and the Team Product Dashboards emerge as a crucial tool to keep teams focused on the right metrics throughout the development process. These dashboards visualize product goals, the target customer, current and future sprint goals, and key metrics. They serve as a cornerstone for team accountability, fostering self-management and autonomy. In this episode, we discuss a Product Dashboard similar to the one illustrated below:  How To Measure Value: A Summary In today's episode, we covered the following steps to help the PO measure value: Define value (discussed in the previous episode). Define appropriate metrics for the defined value. Consider both leading and lagging indicators. Ensure a balance of strategic and day-to-day metrics for decision-making. Build a product dashboard with the PO and the team to enhance self-accountability and self-management. Explore these concepts further in the Coach Your PO e-course: Module 3 (Version 1.0): Setting up ACTIONABLE metrics, distinguishing between ACTIONABLE and Vanity Metrics. Module 2.0: Scaling up the Product Owner role for multiple teams and products, featuring insights into Product Dashboards and Vision. Module 09: Techniques for quick feedback and leveraging process metrics critical for the discussed product dashboard. For more details on the Coach Your PO e-course, visit bit.ly/coachyourpo. He is a recognized expert on the return on investment (ROI) and total cost of ownership (TCO) analysis of technology and has written and presented extensively on a range of organizational topics and the importance of matching technology to business organizational objectives. In this episode, Ian shares how you can create optimal pricing by understanding how customers use your product and find value in them.   What you will learn from this episode: Learn how to quantify a product's value in measurable terms Find out the three value propositions you can derive from when helping people find and understand their product's value Discover how to restructure your conversations to help people recognize the value you offer and you get empowered to price that value   “Look at the customer value, how is the customer achieving value from your product and price according to that.”  - Ian Campbell   Topics Covered: 01:42 - How he got into pricing 02:23 - What Nucleus Research is all about 03:26 - Understanding value with how customers use the product rather than vendor claims 05:20 - Defining Value 06:48 - The challenge with quantifying ROI with non-monetary value [customers' happiness] 09:00 - Thoughts on Mark's statement about B2B being more cognizant of value they want to receive 10:05 - Translating 'happier employees' into quantifiable terms 11:19 - Selling risk and who bears the most burden in dealing with security threats 15:32 - What's it like selling for emotional reasons 19:14 - How emotional decisions relate to Danny Kahneman's decision-making theories 20:29 - Why he uses the three-year horizon [but what if a client insist on using a 5-year time frame] 24:00 - Why there are only three value propositions you can derive from 26:15 - Helping people [existing and new customers] find value in your product 28:22 - How to structure your conversation that people understands and find value in your product 29:50 - Ian's pricing advice   Key Takeaways: "Technology is around delivering value, not necessarily what's the best, but what's the best for you and understanding that." - Ian Campbell "When you talk about value, we look at value in four different categories, and there are value categories that are for instance happier employees. And that's not something I can necessarily quantify, but for a customer and for a company, that could be something very, very valuable for them and that could be their objective." - Ian Campbell "Today, more than ever, it's important to draw a link between what you sell and how you deliver bottom line benefits. Today's show is with guest Henry Lorber, distressed real estate debt expert and one of the only people you will likely come across whose experience goes back so far he remembers the REIT downturn of the 1970's! I contacted Henry because he was quoted as saying that ‘Crowdfunding for real estate is a disaster waiting to happen' in a recent Real Deal article (see link at the bottom of the page) and, rising to the bait, I figured such a statement could not go unchallenged. Apart from our discussion on that topic (Henry's approach comes from his classic institutional perspective) I discovered that he has deep experience in commercial real estate banking and finance going back even before my time (the early middle ages). What you'll learn today is in what ways ‘crowdfunding', as a term used to describe ‘general solicitation' or online syndication in general, can lead to misinterpretation of this industry. Plus you'll also hear insights firsthand from someone who has lived through more real estate downturns than anyone else you likely know. ** In this brand new podcast series at GowerCrowd, The Real Estate Reality Show, we take a realistic view of commercial real estate investing, providing pragmatic insights for passive investors who are looking for sponsors they can trust and distressed opportunities they can invest in. You'll find no quick fixes or easy money ideas here, no sales pitches, big egos or hype. You'll learn how to build your wealth while protecting your capital investing as a limited partner in commercial real estate investments, even and especially during an economic downturn. Educator and author Mark Carter talks about the importance of adding value to all aspects of your business, why you need to define your purpose and why agents need to know their own value. Value is a foundation of success in all areas of life, however, people often perceive value through their own experiences, beliefs and values. That's the opinion of keynote speaker, educator, and author Mark Carter, who has spent 25 years teaching businesses and individuals the importance of adding value to everything they do. In this episode of the Elevate podcast with Elite Agent Managing Editor, Samantha McLean, Mark reveals what agents and agencies need to do to better add value - and articulate that value for their clients to grow their business. He also mentions why it's critical to develop leaders and invest in your people and the importance of having a personalised touch to stand out in a tech-driven world. Mark also speaks about why you need to know your business's purpose to attract and retain the best people and how leaders can add value to their team. Mark Carter is presenting at this year's Elite Retreat and will be talking about the 5 value elements, the 4 value causes and how they relate to the experience economy. Sam and Mark also discuss: 1:49 - How Mark's career has evolved over time. 3:09 - The cinematic experience that Mark will bring to Elite Retreat. 6:11 - Current leadership trends and how they're changing. 9:14 - How to blend technology and humanity. 11:58 - Mark's new book on adding value. 15:20 - How Mark adds value in his business. 16:13 - How to look at value to help grow your real estate business. 18:20 - Ways in which value can be created in real estate. 19:29 - Adding value in an age of technology. 21:45 - The best way for leaders to add value to teams. (1/12/23) A positive start to January completes a bullish trifecta for markets, including a modest Santa Claus rally and negative returns for 2022. Anticipation of today's CPI print (clocking in with a 6.5% increase over last year, but a 0.1% decrease from the prior month) sets the stage for the Fed's next move...and markets' response. The Fed wants to see a trend towards 2% inflation. Why a pivot is different from a pause. There are three potential responses by the Fed. What about a "soft landing?" Summary In this episode of The Value Stream Show, hosts Andrew Davis and Steve Pereira discuss the vast reach of value, how we define it and how we can measure it. They explore the complex nature of value and the many different factors that influence it. Steve and Andrew talk about the importance of distinguishing the difference between the value of inputs versus the value of the output that's produced. They also talk about how understanding value can create an opportunity for growth and the potential to reclaim past losses in an organization, a market, or as an individual. Host Bios Andrew Davis is a DevOps and Salesforce specialist and author of the book Mastering Salesforce DevOps. As Senior Director of Research and Innovation for Copado, he leads methodology and training for Copado's customers and partners. He's spent his life working at the intersection of technology, psychology, and culture change, including 15 years as a Buddhist monk. He's working towards a world in which we can all be at peace amidst constant change, and bring energy, creativity, and care to every part of our work. Steve Pereira is a veteran of software delivery and operations. He founded Visible Value Stream Consulting in 2018, and serves as a board advisor for the Value Stream Management Consortium, a contributor to the Value Stream Management Interoperability Technical Committee, and as a Value Stream Management strategist for Copado. He's always looking for ways to bring business and technology together by facilitating visual collaboration. What You'll Learn What is Value? The elements of valueBuilding individual, customer, and organization valueDistinguishing between input value and output value Quotes “Organizations are defined by value streams. The network of value streams that compose the organization and the outcomes those generate result from the activity of individual contributors. Individual contributors will default to working and moving in different directions unless they're aligned around the value stream.” -Steve [07:37] “We have different time horizons for our understanding of value. My experience of what is valuable immediately is usually to the detriment of what is valuable to me in the long term. This is the tension of time and visibility. It is an interesting dimension to consider in the context of value stream management.” -Steve [15:03] “Value at the end of the day is feeling. How an individual feels about something. But then of course we have to make decisions as a group. So how do we feel as a group about something? Or how does the market feel about something?” -Andrew [03:05] “There is a phenomenal amount of efficiency that can be reclaimed from company processes if we connect with employees' intrinsic motivations. If your employees are not feeling profoundly engaged with the company's mission to serve your customers for the greater good of the organization, they will consciously or subconsciously be dragging their feet and unmotivated.” -Andrew [13:22] Timestamps [00:27] Intro [00:57] What is value? Finally, they talk about the $31,000,000 Patek and how they feel about it taking the spot the much adored Paul Newman Daytona once held. Enjoy! Boss Barista
David Hu of The Peccary on Defining Value and Leadership [092]

Boss Barista

Everyone has had a bad boss. Everyone has probably had multiple bad bosses. I had one boss tell me I was inauthentic and that he hated me, I had one tell me he couldn’t give me more money after he promoted me, I had two, a married couple, get a divorce in the middle of the cafe and put all the employees right in the center. And I too, have been that bad boss. I’ve been too overbearing, too nitpicky, too weird and mean. I learned to be a better boss—not perfect, not great, probably not even good—but better, through reading countless articles, scouring the internet for anything I could find about how to manage better. Surprisingly, there’s not a lot on the internet about how to be a better leader. There’s tons of articles complaining about shitty employees, but there seems to be a fundamental disconnect between the role of leaders and how they can improve and set examples for their staff. In a way, we don’t really expect leaders to be held accountable, and instead write off bad work environments as a result of terrible employees. I know this is bullshit—but I have to say the only way I learned this lesson is because of my time as a middle school teacher. This is a story I tell all the time, but I’ll tell it again because it’s so vitally important to me and who I’ve become—I was trying to get my students to behave by lining them up outside my classroom, and it wasn’t working. So my principal calls me, and I’m immediately blaming the kids, blaming the fact that my class is right after lunch...and tells me probably the single-most important set of words I’ve ever heard. He told me their rowdiness—that’s my fault. I’m in control. But then he pauses, and says, “That’s meant to empower you. You’re always in control.” So I noticed when I started seeing these amazing post on Instagram about leadership from a coffeeshop called The Peccary in New Jersey. These posts extolled the work of baristas, and talked about how it’s the job of leaders to make the work of being a barista easier. David Hu, the owner of The Peccary, does this in a number of ways. He pays his baristas more, they know their schedules ahead of time for a year, they were paid for months during training and onboarding before the shop opened, and I wanted to learn more about how David developed such an attuned sense of purpose and vision that focused on being a strong leader that put his staff first. It’s not without his ups and downs—The Peccary recently closed its doors, which we talk about, but it does force you consider what your values are, and what you do to live those values.
