The other day one of my teammates, Daphne V Smith said with some concern, "People are asking questions." "What would they like to know?" I asked. She proceeded to explain, "Why are you focusing on Web3 and blockchain along with publishing? Isn't the metaverse just a fad? Are NFTs a scam? Are you still doing Igniting Souls Conference? What about Author Elite Awards? And many other questions." I asked her if she wanted to hear my thoughts. She invited me to share. When I finished she said, "This is the Kary I know. People need to hear your heart on this, and that you care for them. I had no idea how this all fits together. This is deep and super important about where our world is headed." I thought for a moment. Well, what if we do a Livestream where you ask me anything, Daphne? I don't want to know your questions in advance. And let's have whoever wants to join us hop on and they can ask questions too via Zoom. Or if they want to just listen they can watch via Facebook Live. Thus, our recent Behind the Curtain with Igniting Souls. This past year I've invested hundreds and hundreds of hours researching the new world, we're about to enter. It's exciting, but I also have grave concerns. WARNING: Contains explicit language at one point when this global livestream was hacked by outsiders. These hackers verbally attacked guests and our moderators could not mute them or remove them. We had no choice but to end the recording and start another one. We kept both livestreams unedited so you can understand the full context for what transpired afterwards. Kary closed the second livestream praying for these individuals.

I had the honor of interviewing one of the most amazing people on the planet today, Christopher Hallman. In the past, some people have told him to give up trying to be a speaker. Many people have only viewed him as "disabled." By "accident" I met him last month in Florida. Someone pushed his wheelchair up to the microphone during a Q and A session with hundreds of professionals in the room. He asked the global leader, "How can a young disabled man add value to other people?" It took him a long time to get the words out. But when he finished, the whole room erupted into a standing ovation. Some people cried. All were deeply impacted. Chris' courage had transformed us in a matter of minutes. He imparted a rare boldness into each of us. Our excuses and self-limiting beliefs eroded. After the session I found his mom and said, "Chris must speak at the Igniting Souls Conference. Please can he? Our people need his courage." When it comes to courage and conquering your fear, Chris Hallman is a true inspiration. I encountered him at a John Maxwell event, where he is a Certified Coach and Speaker, and his passion for learning and growing is amazing. Chris is differently-abled, and he is making a real difference as a Mentorship Alumni and a “Helping Others Heal” Certified Peer Mentor. His presentation at the Igniting Souls Conference was amazing.

What do you want in the next year? I think many of us are scared to have a happy new year. We purposely don't want to get clear on what a happy new year looks like for us because we're afraid we won't meet our goals, and we know it will be painful. I just wrote out my goals for 2020. Some of them scare me. Some of them are edgey and confrontational. But if we're not clear and very specific on our goals, you're not going to achieve them. Share some of your specific goals in the comments below. And join us at the Igniting Souls Conference. Find out more at https://www.ignitingsoulsconference.com.
I had a friend who was at a party with a Lexus dealer and instead of explaining the benefits of the car, he let him test drive it for the weekend. He gave my friend the actual experience. Consider how you can give people the actual experience in your coaching business because very few people have experienced coaching and may have some other ideas about what coaching actually is. When my BFF, Laurie Ruettimann, called me up and told me about her unplanned, open afternoon and a need for a last-minute podcast guest, I suggested we do a recording together to fill the gap. Inspired by the recurring random show theme heard on The Tim Ferriss podcast, I suggested we do something similar. Thus, this week I am bringing you a conversation with Laurie Ruettimann. Laurie is a writer, speaker, and podcaster as a result of the heartbreak and outrage she experienced throughout her corporate career. She helps executives and HR leaders prioritize the employee experience to avoid the collateral damage of a toxic work environment. She is also my mentor and travel companion. Today’s episode is a great representation of what happens when Laurie and I get together to chat. We typically start off on one topic, in this case it was her book writing and publishing journey, and move on to the next topic, in a somewhat rapid-fire succession. You’ll hear us chat about work, including our outlook for the new year, my epiphanies about time management and our travel stories. We also discuss burnout and rethinking the way we view business. Show Highlights: About Laurie’s book writing journey, the editing process, and what to expect in the new year and beyond Goodreads and Amazon as incredibly important platforms for authors and how Laurie’s publishing team is prepping for her book launch later next year Where in the world is Jennifer McClure? Some of the sounds and sights I will be traveling to in 2020 My epiphanies around time management, which I had while recovering from a horse-riding accident What we are excited about for 2020, including doing things a little bit differently in our lives such as getting a bit more sober and taking a time Sabbath Resources:King University Laurie Ruettimann Impact Makers Episode 2 – The Thriving Contrarian with Laurie Ruettimann Let's Fix Work podcast The Tim Ferriss Show podcast: The Random Show — On Fasting, Forest Bathing, How to Say NO, Rebooting the Self, and Much More (#391) ERE Recruiting Conference Igniting Souls Conference Kary Oberbrunner Full Focus Planner Connect with Jennifer: Send her a message On Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/JenniferMcClureSpeaker On Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/impactmakerspodcast/ On LinkedIn: http://www.linkedin.com/in/jennifermcclure On Twitter: https://twitter.com/JenniferMcClure *** EPISODE CREDITS: If you like this podcast and are thinking of creating your own, consider talking to my producer, Danny Ozment. One of the things people need is novelty. My friend Dan Sullivan says that when people think they've seen or done something before, they're done. We as humans like variety. We're going to mix up The Daily Show in 2020. Check it out as we grow. I'm excited to have you on the journey with me. What new things are you doing in 2020? Don't ever choose a lift that does not require courage. Comfort and courage cannot co-exist. A life of comfort is boring. Create and embrace a life of courage. One way to do this is by joining us at Igniting Souls Conference - https://www.ignitingsoulsconference.com
Most people want to reap a harvest but very few people want to plant the seeds. It takes discipline. If you're putting offers out there and not getting a big response, ask yourself if you are planting enough seeds and adding value. Many people start. Very few people finish. A little less than a month ago, we had the Igniting Souls Conference. The tribe asked for a 30-day challenge. On Day 1, we had 380 posts. On Day 20, we only had a couple of dozen. It's tough to be consistent. It's easy to drift away from our dreams. Choices create habits. Habits create character. Character creates personality. Go to https://www.deeperpathbook.com to find out more about how to become a master in the art of living.
When the tribe got together at the recent Igniting Souls Conference, they asked for accountability. We established a Facebook Group all about pushing people to their next best step. Since conference, we've been in a 30-day challenge. What are you working on today. Let's keep each other accountable.
We live in an online world where everything is digital. But there's just something about meeting face-to-face. You pick up on things that you don't pick up on when you're on Zoom — eye contact, appearance, body language. I know there's a cost to fly across the country, but it can be worth it. Use the most intense form of connection you can. Don't put people on the back burner. To find out more, join us at Igniting Souls Conference 2020 at https://www.ignitingsoulsconference.com.
I'm at the Igniting Souls Conference, and I asked the crowd to speak words of life to one another. I see people in tears because it's been so long since they've heard these things. There are two times when people speak words of life to other people: when they're dead or when they're retiring. But you can't do much with those words at those times. I challenge you to speak words of life to someone else.
I am here with my friend Helen, an award-winning author of the book The Red Road Home. She's from Israel. Hear her experience speaking at the Igniting Souls Conference. The magic of this conference is the people. You need to speak to your audience and don't worry about those who don't get you. If you do that, you'll the people right in front of you.
We are getting ready to start our work out before the Igniting Souls Conference. Why? Because we can all grow through pain. Don't be afraid of pain.
The Igniting Souls Conference is going on right now, and I'm in my hotel room. I'm prepping for this afternoon. That's how much I trust the team. It's easy to think that everything rises and falls on you. If it does, you don't know how to grow your team very well and you're not going to be able to make an impact. I'm going through the final preparations for Igniting Souls Conference. I don't like meetings. But if we know what we want the outcome to be, it's different. Don't have a meeting if there's not a clear win. When you meet, walk or stand. It tends to shorten the meeting. Join us for the 2020 Igniting Souls Conference. We just completed one of my favorite things — the pre con call. We go over the schedule, expectations and questions and answers so people can show up filled up to the Igniting Souls Conference. The event actually happens way before the event. Find out more at https://www.ignitingsoulsconference.com. 2020 tickets will be available soon.
In the last five years, we've had a sold out Igniting Souls Conference. That's not easy in the world where there is so much free content online. One thing we do is is early bird pricing, giving folks a massive incentive to get their ticket early. But our #1 asset of our conference is the people. People come to connect with other people and build relationships. The show isn't on the stage. The show is what's happening in the hallways and at the tables. It's the culture that people keep coming back for. To find out more, go to https://www.ignitingsoulsconference.com. 2020 tickets will be available soon.
No matter how good of a strategic thinker you are, you need someone with you. Take a peek as Joel Kessel goes through the Igniting Souls Conference with me. Sometimes it's the smallest thing that stops someone's progress and immediately they throw in the towel. While other people push through insurmountable obstacles. How is that? It is a mindset difference. Start a project knowing that obstacles will come so you're not surprised when they do. Then find a way. Don't quit. I spent most of the day writing a very vulnerable post about my most recent addiction. I have gotten a ton of responses, but the ones I love the most are the ones where people are telling me how much they needed to hear this. Remember that we all have a story to tell. When we hide that, we are keeping other people from experiencing their own liberation. You have overcome for a reason. Step into the light. If this resonates with you, consider joining us at Igniting Souls Conference, https://www.ignitingsoulsconference.com.
This past weekend, we spent a bunch of time in the basement playing indoor volleyball. So many times we think our kids need the latest technology. Sometimes we just need to turn off the devices and have some good old fashioned fun. The best things in life are often free. Entertainment often gets tripped up on money and budgets. What could you do that's free in your business. The best marketing is free. There is earned marketing and there is paid marketing. If we're not careful, we accept the cliches about growing older. More and more people are living longer. I just talked to a 75 year old who feels more alive and is more in shape than ever. The other day I was talking to a client who was going through some pain. I don't like pain. But most things in life require some pain. We must embrace it. Don't look at the cross, look at the crown. My good friend Dexter Godfrey shares a bit about his transformation story and that of others he's seen in this community. One of my favorite movies is Dead Poet's Society. There's a scene in the movie where the teacher begins teaching how to score a poem and he tells them to rip the entire section out. I've been listening to lectures from professors from Harvard and others, and I feel the same way. I think they're overcomplicating it. So many times we rely on logic, but we need to trust our heart. Will power, hustle and grit can't be factored into a formula. To find out more, join us at the Igniting Souls Conference - https://www.ignitingsoulsconference.com.
Everybody seems to be crowdsourcing these days — looking for recommendations on so many things. That's fine. But don't crowdsource your life — the big decisions. What you're basically saying is you need other people's help to direct your life. It can impact your coaching business if you're a coach. There's a disconnect. I was filling out a form to be a chaperone for the eighth grade field trip, and they asked what i thought were the top three characteristics of a chaperone. The number one I listed was flexibility. A lot of times we wake up with the best of intentions, but sometimes life happens. And when life happens, you need to flex. That reminds me of when I was chaperoning the sixth grade trip and had 45 sixth graders in a truck stop for three hours. Share how you've flexed below. I debrief everything – webinars, conferences, everything. Why? Because there are so many things you can learn when you debrief. I actually debrief every day by journaling. Look at what didn’t work, what is working, what changes you need to make. It’s like a sports team that watches their films. We are having our best year ever, and I think it’s because we are taking time to debrief. If you need help with this, consider joining us at Igniting Souls Conference.

In this episode I talk about the futility of looking for investors before you have some level of success. If you have an invention – sell 1000 and then you'll have a basis for getting investors. If you are a software developer, develop something that 1500 people sign up for with a monthly fee. If you're an author, write a book and sell 2000 copies – then publishers will talk to you about your next one. If you're an artist and you're looking for investors, show them pictures of the last 20 pieces you sold. I am 58 and have gotten nowhere in life. When will my turn ever come? 5. I would like to hear any encouragement from experiences of people you might know who hit bottom in every area of life and they went forward. Questions from Dan: What Choices Have You Made? Did you choose the house you're living in? Did you choose the job you have now? Did you choose the car you're driving? Did you choose the college you went to or whether to go to college? Resources: Dan Miller's Top 10 Recommended Books – If there is one thing that has fueled my own success it is the books I have read. I continue a heavy reading schedule and will until the day I die because the wisdom of the ages is so readily available for any of us – it's a shame to not take advantage of it. I am asked repeatedly what books I recommend. So here are 10 suggestions for 2018. You'll notice these are not all business or money-making books, but I truly believe that financial success is a byproduct of personal success. If you want to get rich, work on developing YOU! 1. Frankl, Viktor. Man's Search for Meaning. A classic work by a concentration camp prisoner that shows that even when everything else is taken away, we have the ability to choose. I read this one about every six months just to remind myself of what is really important. 2. Gire, Ken. Windows of the Soul. One of my favorite books ever. A gentle guide to help us see God in new ways. I believe it opens our eyes to see more opportunities all around us in the process. A timeless classic. 3. Quindlen, Anna. A Short Guide to a Happy Life. What does it take to really live deeply and successfully, rather than to just exist? This little book puts in perspective those things we often consider to be too important. 4. Schwartz, David. The Magic of Thinking Big. Workable methods for thinking big. How to create your own “good luck.” The book that put coach Lou Holtz on the road to extraordinary success. 5. Carnegie, Dale. How to Win Friends & Influence People. This is the classic little book on creating great relationships and building trust with others. 6. Ziglar, Zig. See You at the Top. This book is full of easy to understand principles for any age. We used it as a text book for homeschooling our children. 7. Hill, Napoleon. Think and Grow Rich. I'm sure you've heard of this one. The principles are as true today as they were in 1937. I value this book so much I have an original copy. 8. Lapin, Rabbi Daniel. Thou Shall Prosper. Nothing has shaped my thinking on a healthy Biblical perspective on money as much as this book. 9. Conwell, Russell. Acres of Diamonds. I love this little story about discovering that the opportunities for our greatest success are often right under our nose. Get a digital version here FREE when you sign up for Dan's weekly inspiration and tips on finding or creating work you love. 10. Canfield, Jack. The Success Principles. An incredible compilation of 64 success principles from the co-author of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series. Dan & Joanne's Decision Making Process: Joanne and I have used a concise process for all the years of our marriage. When confronted with a decision, we allow a 2-week maximum for arriving at a decision. Whether it is where to move, what kind of car to purchase, making a career or business decision, or how to handle a difficult relationship with a relative, we approach the process as follows: 1. State the problem. 2. Get the advice and opinions of others. 3. List the alternatives. 4. Choose the best alternative. 5. Act. And we avoid the crippling power of indecision. Yes, this process must be bathed in prayer. But a daily walk of integrity and character should provide confidence in moving ahead quickly with most any decision. You, too, can deal effectively with the challenge of making solid decisions. Don't be indecisive and unstable in all your ways. Rather, walk in the strength, confidence, and boldness that come from decisive action. Meet Dan and Joanne at Igniting Souls Conference in Columbus, Ohio Oct. 26-28th, 2018 http://48dayseagles.com/. Recently a 36 yr old MBA in an executive position in an exciting industry shared this concern in her coaching profile: “I have a vague sense that my life is too small.” In today's podcast we unpack how to embrace living large in your life. Episode #605 March 30, 2018 Hi, this is Dan Miller – and yes you're listening to the 48 Days Radio show – where each week we take 48 minutes to dive into real life questions about finding your passion, deciding what kind of life you want to live – and then finding or creating work that allows you to show up every day, excited to be able to do something that is meaningful, fulfilling – and profitable. This is where normal, indecision and ambiguity come to die. Welcome to the 48 Days Radio Show. Questions: I have a vague sense that my life is too small. Can you identify from the first three months of this year: 4-5 ideas you had for a better job or starting your own business? 3 things that you did just to help someone out with no expectation of payback? The books you read or listened to that enlightened your spirit, confidence, knowledge and wisdom? How many hours you have spent in quiet contemplation? The 2 or 3 things you did that you had never done before? Concerts, art shows, seminars, workshops or other enriching experiences you attended? 2 or 3 specific things you did to strengthen the relationships that mean the most to you? If you have no responses to these seven questions, chances are strong that you are living your life too small. Back in 2015 I took part in a mastermind based on the book Day Job to Dream Job by Kary Oberbrunner. Now, two years later at the Igniting Souls Conference, a few of my fellow masterminders and I sat down to talk about our experience. What a fun discussion we had! I hope you enjoy listening and if you are at a place in your life where you feel like you are in a "prison" of some sort, that you will find encouragement and hope for your future. Employee to Stay-At-Home-Dad to Leading A 7-Figure Business Today, in the second half of our conversation with David Branderhorst, we talk about: David’s role in the Igniting Souls organization. The goal of the programs and products David and his partner are developing. What impact means. Where David finds his reward. David left a banking career to be a full time dad. As his kids entered school, he pursued entrepreneurial opportunities and now impacts people on a global scale. David worked with directly with the CFO and CEO of a regional bank and his wife had a successful career of her own. They had a baby, then had twins. There were cracks showing in the foundation of their marriage due to stress and exhaustion. David realized the outcome he and his wife wanted went far beyond survival. They agreed he should “walk away” from his career to invest his time as dad to his three children while his wife continued her career. When the kids were old enough to go to school, David began to search for a new career, but realized he wanted more than just a job. He eventually partnered with Kary Oberbrunner to build Igniting Souls, where he helps individuals and organizations clarify who they are, why they are here, and where they should invest their time and energy.
