What's the first thing that comes to mind when you think of wealth? For most people, it's tangible—money in the bank, real estate, stocks, or physical assets. But let me introduce you to a critical concept that doesn't always get enough attention: intellectual property (IP). Today, I'm diving into why it matters and how it can make or break your business. Are you protecting your intellectual property by taking the necessary steps to ensure your ideas are protected and monetized? https://www.youtube.com/live/8qJefZzioqE Author and entrepreneur Kary Oberbrunner has made it his mission to help people protect their ideas, brands, and creative work. In our conversation, Kary shared some powerful lessons and strategies about IP that every business owner, entrepreneur, and even everyday creator needs to understand. The Surprising Truth About Protecting Your Intellectual Property Kary kicked off the conversation with a mind-blowing statistic. Back in 1975, only 17% of the S&P 500's assets were intangible—things like patents, trademarks, and other IP. Fast forward to today, and a staggering 90% of the value of those same companies is now tied up in intangible assets. In fact, by 2024, they estimate this number to be as high as 96%! If that doesn't get your attention, I don't know what will. In short, the world has shifted. We're no longer in a world where physical assets dominate. Instead, your ideas, your brand, and your processes are often your most valuable business assets. And yet, many of us overlook the importance of protecting them. Why You Must Protect Your Ideas If you're a business owner or an entrepreneur, you already know that your ideas, your innovations, and your unique ways of doing things are what set you apart. But here's the challenge: most of us don't think about protecting those ideas until it's too late. That's why this conversation with Kary Oberbrunner was so important. His focus on helping businesses recognize their intellectual property as their greatest asset—and protecting it—was eye-opening. What if someone came along and copied your brand, your process, or your proprietary method? Without protection, you could find yourself out of business or stuck in a legal battle. But protecting your IP is not just for giant companies like Apple or Nike. It's something we all need to think about—whether you're running a family business, a startup,

Overcoming RejectionKary Oberbrunner was an angry kid who questioned God at every turn. But at the age of 12, he accepted Christ and wanted to grow in his faith. However, this didn't end his doubts and debilitating battle with guilt that drove him to self-harm. It was a deep dive into the Psalms that started to turn Kary's life around. The psalmist's real struggles with faith encouraged him to journal — emptying his pain on the page — something he does to this day. When it came time to graduate high school, Kary was uncertain about what he wanted to do with his life or if he even wanted to attend college. Somewhat aimless, he decided to follow his high school girlfriend to Grace College, only to break up on their first day as college freshmen. Broken and confused, he stayed at Grace and with guidance from his peers and professors, he decided to pursue becoming a United States Air Force chaplain. Similar to his broken high school relationship, his dream of becoming a chaplain ended because he was turned away by the Air Force due to an asthma condition.Still somewhat aimless, Kary graduated from college and soon thereafter earned a master's degree from Grace Seminary. His theology education led him to become a pastor at a small country church in Ohio. But Kary felt stagnant. He was bored, so he pursued a doctorate degree and started writing books. His soul was ignited, and he quickly became a Wall Street Journal and USA Today bestselling author and the CEO of Igniting Souls Publishing Agency. Today, Kary continues to feed his entrepreneurial spirit by leading Igniting Souls and Blockchain Life businesses, but he's also become the Berry Chair of Entrepreneurship for Cedarville's Robert W. Plaster School of Business.

The other day one of my teammates, Daphne V Smith said with some concern, "People are asking questions." "What would they like to know?" I asked. She proceeded to explain, "Why are you focusing on Web3 and blockchain along with publishing? Isn't the metaverse just a fad? Are NFTs a scam? Are you still doing Igniting Souls Conference? What about Author Elite Awards? And many other questions." I asked her if she wanted to hear my thoughts. She invited me to share. When I finished she said, "This is the Kary I know. People need to hear your heart on this, and that you care for them. I had no idea how this all fits together. This is deep and super important about where our world is headed." I thought for a moment. Well, what if we do a Livestream where you ask me anything, Daphne? I don't want to know your questions in advance. And let's have whoever wants to join us hop on and they can ask questions too via Zoom. Or if they want to just listen they can watch via Facebook Live. Thus, our recent Behind the Curtain with Igniting Souls. This past year I've invested hundreds and hundreds of hours researching the new world, we're about to enter. It's exciting, but I also have grave concerns. WARNING: Contains explicit language at one point when this global livestream was hacked by outsiders. These hackers verbally attacked guests and our moderators could not mute them or remove them. We had no choice but to end the recording and start another one. We kept both livestreams unedited so you can understand the full context for what transpired afterwards. Kary closed the second livestream praying for these individuals.
This is the end of the Igniting Souls Show's 7 year run (over 400 episodes). Why? I'm ending it to allow the margin needed for some exciting new things, including the new Blockchain Life Podcast. I know what you're thinking, "What does Blockchain have to do with publishing and authors?" Well, it has EVERYTHING to do with publishing, authors, coaches, entrepreneurs and speakers. The fact is that you cannot pull the Internet away from any facet of life today. Blockchain isn't just changing the rules; it's changing the game, and I want to be on the cutting edge of future thought and creativity. I also want to share my quest for knowledge on this with you. I'm not the expert on things like Blockchain, NFTs and Cryptocurrency, but I'm interviewing folks who are, and I'm inviting you to join us as we look into the future of not only publishing, but life, together. This week on the podcast, Nick is chatting with Kary Oberbrunner, the author of Unhackable and founder of Igniting Souls Publishing Agency. Just like Nick, Kary is obsessed with helping people become more productive—the only difference is that Kary takes a slightly different approach, by making people unhackable. Because of a stutter problem at a young age, our guest grew up being discriminated against and decided not to use his voice, resorting to communicating using the written word. This led him to develop a deep desire to achieve perfection, which later caused self-injury when he deemed himself to be imperfect. Later in life, he finally accepted his imperfections, and turned his life around. He is here to teach us how to find our own voice, by clarifying who we are, why we are in this world and where do we go from here. This is my amazing conversation with Kary Oberbrunner. These last few weeks have been quite the whirlwind for me. I went out of town for 10 days that kicked off with a workshop I did with my friend Joel for nonprofit executives, then to the Igniting Souls author conference, and concluded with taking on a brand new client. What is gratitude? It's a feeling of appreciation and showing an appreciation of kindness and being thankful. Being grateful is being thankful – thankful to others for what they've done for us, volunteers willing to spend their time with us, gratitude for people who give generously. Gratitude is contagious. Gratitude creates positive thinking. Our brains cannot think positively and negatively at the same time. This means we can't have the glass half full and half empty at the same time. As someone who works with fundraisers, it's my job as the encourager to get you thinking about who you can call on and what opportunities you can take to help you achieve your goals. When you have peace about what you're doing, you have less fear. Gratitude creates resilience. Resilience to life's challenges. When you are able to bounce back quicker from what life throws at you, you are able to raise more funds and create greater impact. We have all been through traumatic experiences; how often do we find ourselves in a position where someone gave to our organization and then all of a sudden, they're gone? If you wallow in the sadness of them leaving, you can easily create a downward spiral of negative thinking. We have to be able to be resilient and understand that not every donor is going to come back, we should never have an expectation that donors are going to give every year. Gratitude creates joy. Practicing gratitude everyday brings joy in your life. I have mentioned this before, but in the back of my journal, I have a joy list. It's a bulleted list of all the things that bring me joy. I try and spend most of my time doing the things on my list that bring me joy because I have a choice every single day to do things I enjoy. One of the things on my list is deep conversations so I work really hard to incorporate these types of conversations into my daily life and into the work I do. Gratitude can change everything including our mental state and can help us turn things around. My challenge to you today is to create your own joy list. As we gear up for this holiday season and the season of giving, think through those little things that bring you joy and how just by changing your thought process can change how people feel about your cause. People give to people; they don't give to causes. People are giving to you and the life change you are making through your organization. It's way easier to give to someone who is positive and shows gratitude toward your generosity. If you're feeling really stressed right now, I need you to push that to the side and be thinking positive thoughts because those negative thoughts are not doing you any favors, they aren't helping your fundraising, and your desperation is repelling people away from you and your cause. Last week we talked about podcasting and I wanted to let you all know that I am launching a new podcast with my friend Joel Kessel called the Nonprofit Executive Podcast. The first three episodes are dropping later this week. This is THE podcast for nonprofit executives who are working through strategic plans, board development, administrative support and all of those different roles that come with an executive title. Joel and I will specifically talk about strategic planning and fundraising. Visit http://nonprofitexecutivepodcast.com/ Interested in joining the Nonprofit Executive Club? These last few weeks have been quite the whirlwind for me. I went out of town for 10 days that kicked off with a workshop I did with my friend Joel for nonprofit executives, then to the Igniting Souls author conference, and concluded with taking on a brand new client. What is gratitude? It’s a feeling of appreciation and showing an appreciation of kindness and being thankful. Being grateful is being thankful – thankful to others for what they’ve done for us, volunteers willing to spend their time with us, gratitude for people who give generously. Gratitude is contagious. Gratitude creates positive thinking. Our brains cannot think positively and negatively at the same time. This means we can’t have the glass half full and half empty at the same time. As someone who works with fundraisers, it’s my job as the encourager to get you thinking about who you can call on and what opportunities you can take to help you achieve your goals. When you have peace about what you’re doing, you have less fear. Gratitude creates resilience. Resilience to life’s challenges. When you are able to bounce back quicker from what life throws at you, you are able to raise more funds and create greater impact. We have all been through traumatic experiences; how often do we find ourselves in a position where someone gave to our organization and then all of a sudden, they’re gone? If you wallow in the sadness of them leaving, you can easily create a downward spiral of negative thinking. We have to be able to be resilient and understand that not every donor is going to come back, we should never have an expectation that donors are going to give every year. Gratitude creates joy. Practicing gratitude everyday brings joy in your life. I have mentioned this before, but in the back of my journal, I have a joy list. It’s a bulleted list of all the things that bring me joy. Employee to Stay-At-Home-Dad to Leading A 7-Figure Business Today, in the second half of our conversation with David Branderhorst, we talk about: David’s role in the Igniting Souls organization. The goal of the programs and products David and his partner are developing. What impact means. Where David finds his reward. David left a banking career to be a full time dad. As his kids entered school, he pursued entrepreneurial opportunities and now impacts people on a global scale. David worked with directly with the CFO and CEO of a regional bank and his wife had a successful career of her own. They had a baby, then had twins. There were cracks showing in the foundation of their marriage due to stress and exhaustion. David realized the outcome he and his wife wanted went far beyond survival. They agreed he should “walk away” from his career to invest his time as dad to his three children while his wife continued her career. When the kids were old enough to go to school, David began to search for a new career, but realized he wanted more than just a job. He eventually partnered with Kary Oberbrunner to build Igniting Souls, where he helps individuals and organizations clarify who they are, why they are here, and where they should invest their time and energy. Hear David Speak at the Igniting Souls Conference in October 2016. Access the show notes HERE.

Key Takeaways Our personal struggles do not define us. We can break free from those struggles and move into our destiny. We need people in lives who will push us hard if we want to be successful. We need "truth tellers." Business fail because they are focused on themselves instead of making it all about the client. Time, Team and Tools are key to breaking out of your Day Job so that you can move into your Dream Job. You can't sustain a high performing business or life if your body can't handle the work load. Personal and Physical health is important. Confusion repels, clarity attracts. Market before you Manufacture Get to know someone first before hiring them. Learn how they handle projects and different situations. "A master in the art of living draws no sharp distinction between his work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his body, his education and his recreation. He simply pursues his vision of excellence and leaves others to determine whether he is working or playing. To himself he always appears to be doing both." ~ L. P.
