Brian Feroldi: Financial Statements Explained Simply Brian Feroldi is a financial educator, YouTuber, and author. He loves to help other people do better with their money, especially their investments. Brian has written more than 3,000 articles on stocks, investing, and personal finance for The Motley Fool. He's also the co-creator of the course, Financial Statements Explained Simply. Most of us are not accountants, but whether you work in a small business, a large corporation, a non-profit, or a government agency, the numbers define what resources that we have. Being able to understand and speak the language of financial statements is essential for leaders who want to influence decisions. In this episode, Brian and I review how to understand and read one of the most important reports for any organization: the income statement. Key Points A few hours of focus on the fundamentals of financial statement can provide you understanding and influence throughout your career. An income statement (also called a profit and loss statement or P&L) shows revenue, expenses, and profit over a period of time. It's similar to your personal budget. Revenue minus cost of goods sold is gross profit. Subtracting operation expenses from gross profit give you an organization's operating income or EBIT (earnings before income and taxes). Depreciation spreads out the cost of tangible assets (equipment, vehicles, buildings) their useful lives. Amortization does the same thing for intangible assets (loans, copyrights, patents). The “bottom line” is literally the bottom line at the end, either net income or net loss. In this episode: taking the unconventional path, the price of time, early entrepreneurship, talent stacking, and the pursuit of learning. At least once in most of our FI journeys, we have pondered what our life would look like if we started earlier. Maybe you have even wondered what value could've been gained if you had started in your teenage years. Well, for some context into the possibilities decision that could provide, we decided to have 17 year old listener Devin on the podcast to discuss what life can look like when you go against the cultural norm of going to college, and instead opting for an entrepreneurial and FI friendly lifestyle. Oftentimes we mention that there are rewards that come with stepping out of your comfort zone, and the same can be said for going against the societal norm and carving out your own path! For our younger audience who may be interested in getting started with their FI journey, let this episode be a useful resource and reassurance that this journey can begin no matter your age! A stock market crash looks like bad news. The world is ending and everything is down. There won't be any more profits to take…until the stock market gets back on track, which it always does. We're not kidding—take a look at the past hundred years of total stock market performance and you'll see something not-so-shocking. The stock market always finds a way to head back up, even after massive crashes like the great depression and great recession. You don't need to trust David and Mindy on this, instead, trust a stock investing expert like Brian Feroldi. Brian wrote the book on why the stock market always goes up, appropriately titled, Why Does The Stock Market Go Up?: Everything You Should Have Been Taught About Investing In School, But Weren't. Brian uses this book to educate, inform, and enhance investors' abilities to invest without stress, headache, or anxiety about future prices. In this episode, Brian demystifies the calculations behind investing in the stock market. From price to earnings ratios to company valuations, and why individual stock picking only makes sense if you're the right type of person. He also hints at a “multimillion-dollar mistake” some investors are making when investing for retirement. Simply hearing his warning could save you millions of dollars in the future! In This Episode We CoverWhy stock market crashes shouldn't scare the average investorWhat causes the stock market to go up in the long-term, even with short-term dipsPrice to earnings ratios explained and using them to value companies before you buyHow long you should hold stocks and why consistent trading could cost you more than you thinkThe 4% rule and how the gold standard of retirement calculations is holding up in 2022Avoiding the “multimillion-dollar mistake” many investors are makingAnd So Much More!Links from the ShowBiggerPockets Money Facebook GroupBiggerPockets ForumsFinance Review Guest OnboardingMindy's TwitterDavid on BiggerPocketsDavid's Site From Military to MillionaireListen to All Your Favorite BiggerPockets Podcasts in One PlaceApply to Be a Guest on The Money ShowPodcast Talent Search!Subscribe to The “On The Market” YouTube ChannelListen to The “On The Market” Podcast: Spotify, Apple Podcasts, BiggerPocketsCheck Out Mindy's 2022 Live Spending Tracker and BudgetWhy You're (Probably) Wrong About PrenupsClick here to check the full show notes: https://www.biggerpockets.com/blog/money-327Interested in learning more about today's sponsors or becoming a BiggerPockets partner yourself? Masterworks is an alternative investing platform that gives you access to one of the most exclusive and overlooked investments in history: blue-chip art. Masterworks lets regular people invest in paintings by legends like Banksy Basquiat and Warhol without spending millions. In fact, I used masterworks to invest in a 15 million dollar Picasso the other day. Here's how it works: Masterworks will buy a painting they think will appreciate well over time, then they securitize that painting with the SEC, so you can invest in it instead of buying the whole thing. Once they sell the painting, later on, you get your share of the proceeds. It's that simple. In 2020 and 2021, masterworks sold two paintings that appreciated by over 30%. They have over 280,000 users and demand is as high as ever. But I partnered with them to give you all priority access by going to https://allthehacks.com/masterworks (see important disclosures at masterworks.io/disclaimer).
