Described by The Observer as ‘a highly individual singer-songwriter', Maz O'Connor is a truly unique artist. Known for her haunting, emotive vocals and her poetic lyricism, her songs are most often short stories inspired by her love of literature, folklore and mythology. Her Irish roots, she suspects, inform her love of darker tales—those of heartbreak, longing and loss. She wrote her first song aged four, whilst making a ‘radio show' with a cassette player and her older brothers, and grew up singing old folk songs in her local Cumbrian venues. As a teenager, the songs of Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell inspired her to learn the guitar, and listening to Regina Spektor inspired her to write her first songs on piano. Winning a BBC Performing Arts Fund Fellowship in 2014 (once won by Adele) brought Maz to wider attention, and later that year she was nominated for a BBC Folk Award for her first album, ‘This Willowed Light'. Maz has since released 3 further albums, toured the U.K., Europe and Eastern Canada, played live sessions on BBC Radio 2 and 3, and appeared at major U.K. festivals, including Glastonbury. Her latest album, 'What I Wanted', was co-written and co-produced with composer Will Gardner and released in May 2022. It's an ambitious song-cycle set in the city at night and explores themes of anxiety, capitalism, sexuality, spirituality, and the search for connection in an age of consumerism. 'What I Wanted' has been widely praised, and called ‘an excellent thing' by Mark Radcliffe of BBC 6 Music and BBC Radio 2. ‘I'm interested in connection,' she says, ‘that's what music is to me. Creating a moment between myself and an audience member, a moment that's intimate and real. I'm always seeking that.' The Wife of Michael Cleary   The Wife of Michael Cleary is a new folk musical inspired by the true story of Bridget Cleary. Bridget was a talented dressmaker from Co. Tipperary, Ireland, who in 1895 was burned to death by her husband and family because they believed her to be a fairy changeling. She was 26 years old. A trial ensued shortly afterwards and the story was widely covered in the press in Ireland and Great Britain. It has previously served as inspiration for music and literature, but this is the first time the story has been addressed in musical theatre. The Wife of Michael Cleary explores faith and superstition at a decisive moment in Irish history, whilst also shining a light on the pressing contemporary issue of violence against women. https://mazoconnor.com/

For a brief moment this month Ukrainians were allowed to call for the death of Vladimir Putin on Instagram and Facebook. That freedom was subsequently withdrawn – “hate speech” isn't tolerated on those platforms after all. But can Ukrainians really be expected to hold back on how they feel about the Russian military? And maybe we, as bystanders, could do with seeing that anger expressed without the filter of online ‘etiquette' policies devised by a Silicon Valley CEO. Maybe our rage about Mariupol is all we've got, so is it wrong to share it. How should we strike the right balance between reason and raw emotion, without on the one hand caring too little, or on the other hand losing perspective. The trouble is, if we allow ‘hate speech' about the Russian President, where do we then draw the line? And what about propaganda, misinformation and conspiracy theories. The social media platforms spend millions on trying to sort truth from lies, but why should it be an internet company that gets to decide? The just-published Online Safety Bill sets out plans to punish internet companies for failing to censor material that is ‘legal but harmful'. The aim is to protect us from the effects of dark images and suggestions. But is it foolish to imply that we can make the internet ‘safe'. And if we agree that the internet will always be dangerous, shouldn't we cultivate a healthy suspicion of it, rather than a misplaced trust in its moderators. Might it not it be better, and more moral, to teach our children – and trust our fellow-citizens – to think for themselves? With digital researcher Ellen Judson; CEO of Index on Censorship Ruth Smeeth; internet safety expert Will Gardner and former teacher and author Joanna Williams. Produced by Olive Clancy

Actor Max Martini has been seen in some amazing hit films, including many in the military/war category such as “13 Hours,” “Captain Phillips,” and “Saving Private Ryan.” It’s no shocker that we’ve gotten plenty of requests to get him as a guest to the podcast, and we’re excited to bring him on for the first time. His latest film “Sgt. Will Gardner” not only follows the story of a veteran struggling to transition to civilian life played by Max, but 30% of the proceeds are going to some amazing charities he’s involved in. These charities are focused on the mission of helping veteran homelessness, PTSD, and TBI. Max not only stars in the film, but he wrote and directed this, and it was truly a passion project which he hopes to make an impact with for a cause he feels so strongly about. Although Martini credits the VA with helping many veterans, he often hears about where they may be failing, and he discusses this with us. “Sgt. Will Gardner” will be released on Blu-ray and DVD on February 19th, so pre-order it now, and you’ll be able to check it out before you know it as we’re only a few days away from it’s release. All That Divides. On this episode we speak to the singer of the band Black Peaks, Will Gardner. The band formed in 2012, initially under the name Shrine, and released a debut self-released EP Closer to the Sun in 2014. After a run of UK and European festivals and tours, the band signed to Sony for the release of their debut album Statues in 2016. The album was well received, and singles 'Glass Built Castles' and 'Saviour' brought the band support from Zane Lowe,Daniel P. Carter and daytime airplay on BBC Radio 1. This increased profile resulted in a busy touring schedule across 2016-2017, including dates supporting Deftones, System of a Down, The Dillinger Escape Plan,Prophets of Rage and Mastodon. Towards the end of 2017, the band announced that they had parted ways with bassist Andrew Gosden, replaced with new member Dave Larkin and were currently in the studio recording their second album, titled All That Divides. All That Divides was released in October 2018 and met with critical acclaim. Will Gardner. The actor also was the writer, director, and producer for this project which highlights the struggles that so many veterans face when they return from war. The film tells the story of Iraq War vet, Will Gardner (Martini). Gardner struggles with numerous setbacks as he attempts to re-acclimate himself to life away from war. The movie takes the vet on a journey as he connects with other veterans and his young son. Hit play and listen in as Martini discusses the challenges he faced in putting this project together and what inspired him to tell this harrowing story. The film is unflinching in offering a harsh view of realities faced by so many of the veterans who sacrifice so much for the protection of their country. The film officially debuts in theaters and VOD on January 11th and via Blu-ray/DVD on February 19th. A portion of the film's proceeds will be donated to three charities (Higher Ground, Warriors Heart, and the Gary Sinise Foundation) that support veterans suffering from Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), PTSD, and veteran homelessness. Be sure to visit the film's Facebook/Twitter pages for more information. Sgt. Will Gardner also stars Omari Hardwick (Power), Lily Rabe (American Horror Story), Gary Sinise (Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders) and more.

Josh Charles’s longest day job was that of Will Gardner on The Good Wife, and he’s been nominated for an Emmy for Best Supporting Actor for his role. Even though his character was brutally murdered this past season, Josh hasn't been sitting shiva long. He's appearing in several upcoming films and will direct future episodes of The Good Wife. He had to audition twice for two different directors for his role in Dead Poets Society, revealing how grueling acting, especially as a kid, can be. Still, his talent and determination paid off, as his earliest roles were alongside legends, like the late Robin Williams (Dead Poets Society) and for John Waters (Hairspray). From the get go, Josh was incredibly passionate about acting and snatched up his first manager as a kid at the sleep away camp Stagedoor Manor. He'd already performed stand up in Baltimore, where he grew up. I'm relieved Ted Talks didn't exist back in the 80's, as I suspect Josh would have probably delivered his first one in the womb. GallantFew, Inc. is a 501(c)3 dedicated to reducing veteran unemployment, homelessness and eliminating veteran suicide. Today's special time and day episode features Max Martini.  Max has a special project in the works to raise awareness of the challenges that Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) pose to a Veteran. Will Gardner is the story of a homeless Iraq war veteran, suffering from Traumatic Brain Injury.  He "borrows" a Harley Davidson and takes a spirited motorcycle trip across the country reclaiming his life lost since his tour. 'Will Gardner' is a film script written by Max Martini.   The production will be donating 50% of profits to charities assisting veterans with TBI, PTSD and veterans that are homeless. Traumatic Brain Injury and PTSD plagues many of our young soldiers.  The numbers increase every day as more and more men and women in uniform come out in search of assistance.  Our intention is to raise awareness to these ailments and to the reintegration program from combat back into society.  If we send these brave young men and women off, volunteering their lives for our freedom, we believe it is our duty to take care of them upon their return home.  We know that our little movie can do so much to help raise this awareness if it reaches enough people. Follow us on Twitter @Maxifrage for updates on our Kickstarter campaign, the movie and the progress we are making raising money for our soldiers in need.  you can also friend Max Martini on Facebook.
