As December is Disability History Month, the topic of today's podcast is disability in the tech industry. Winston Ben Clements, EW Group Disability & Inclusion Specialist, talks to Matthew Gough, HR Business Partner at Element, about the bias in algorithms and ways we can improve disability awareness in the tech industry. Winston said: "As we start to think about the ways we can counteract bias, we need to look at our technology and processes. The people inputting the data project their own biases into the programmes and algorithms they are creating, introducing inherent bias into the system." Matthew also shares insights into the culture at Element and the work EW Group has been supporting them with to build disability awareness across the organisation and a more inclusive culture for all. Matthew said: "It's an exciting time within Element from a diversity and inclusion perspective. As part of our DE&I programme, EW Group recently facilitated a fantastic workshop on resilience and coping strategies, with a particular focus on those with disabilities. We are excited to continue our journey and build on our progress to date to create a more inclusive workplace for all. By building policies, processes and best practice, diversity and inclusion will become organic and engrained within the organisation."Follow EW Group on Twitter and LinkedIn for the latest news and thinking in diversity and inclusion.EW Group has worked with organisations to build more diverse and inclusive cultures for almost thirty years. "Do what you love and you'll never work a day in your life." This has always been one of my all time favorite quotes because in my experience, life always felt way more rewarding and way less stressful when I was operating from a place of fun and purpose. But I've had moments this year when I've experienced the feeling of stress and burnout despite doing work that I love, and despite being surrounded by great people. And with everything that has happened in 2020, my guess is that you have experienced something like this too! In this episode I discuss a recent experience with burnout and how frustrated I was at not being able to give 100% to my work and passions. It even had me questioning whether I was truly passionate about those things in the first place! But, what I learned was that you can't expect yourself to perform at 100%, 100% of the time. And sometimes it's even ok to be at 50%. So let's talk about a series of unfortunate events which led to me discovering my purpose as a motivational speaker.  Having worked in the fin-tech industry for a number of years it all came to a head when my mum became ill, my friendship group fell apart and I was left heartbroken after a relationship breakup. Yes that all happened in the space of just a few months. So I took some time off and during this period of reflection, I became intrigued by the world of self-help and personal development. I also reconnected with my faith and my  God given purpose - to use my story to help other people thrive despite their stories. I believe we all experience events that can be a catalyst for transformation. When this happens, even the jobs, relationships and things we used to care about don't seem to matter anymore. We start to see life through a new lense and get drawn to a  new place that feels more like home.About this podcastGrowing up I used to believe that my story would always hold me back.⁣ But over time I've come to realise that even when your story feels like a burden it can turn out to be a blessing for someone else.⁣ ⁣It doesn't matter where you come from or where you find yourself today - we all have a story!⁣ My goal with this Podcast is to help you OWN YOUR STORY and find your voice so you can live a life of impact, influence and inspiration.⁣ I'm Winston Ben Clements and this is Born 2 Win!About your hostWinston Ben Clements is a TED Speaker, Entrepreneur and mentor. Winston Ben Clements is on a mission to inspire one billion people. Winston was born with brittle bone disorder, a frustrating and debilitating disease that resulted in multiple surgeries throughout his childhood. Instead of being limited by his condition, he decided to embrace it and build a life with meaning and purpose. His TEDx talk, “Your Limitations Are An Illusion,” has inspired thousands of people from all over the world.    Key Takeaways [2:25] Winston’s mother is one of his heroes. She walks the talk and inspires him to be a better person. [4:10] Winston’s first speaking gig went really poorly but he was determined to develop the skills he needed to perform well on the big stage. This drive to constantly better himself (and with the encouragement of a mentor) led him to speak at TEDx. [6:00] Winston was born with brittle bone disorder, which means his bones can break very, very easily. Throughout his childhood, he had to learn what it meant to be resilient and to overcome obstacles none of his peer group was facing. [10:15] Winston has a goal to inspire a billion people with his story. It’s a lofty goal and it scares him. [15:15] With such a big goal, how does Winston plan to help people inspire somebody else? It comes down to living and breathing what you preach. He credits Sean Stephenson for inspiring him and he serves as a reminder to Winston that you can make a big difference by being the person you say you are. [22:00] People can often overlook Winston as a person because all they see is his disability. Winston has a choice to get upset/angry at the situation or move past it and focus on what’s really important: good friends and good company. We all have a choice on how we want to react. [28:55] How can the average person cultivate resilience? First, it’s important to take a step back and recognize the difficult situation you’re faced with. It’s okay to feel upset/angry in the moment. Once you’ve given space to feel frustrated, then switch your perspective from seeing it as an obstacle to how this can define you into being a better version of yourself. [31:15] Get excited that you have obstacles in your life! When you pass through the other side, you will be proud of yourself. [36:15] Define success on your own terms and use your own values as a guide toward what kind of life you want to design for yourself. Everyone has a different path toward happiness and fulfillment. [45:00] Are you struggling to make progress? Pick one habit and focus on that habit for seven days. You will see progress. Stop being a strict consumer of knowledge and start being an implementer.   Quotable Quotes One of the most disappointing things is setting a goal that is realistic, and then realize it wasn’t fulfilling at all. “If you’re the only minority, focus on your personality because that’s where your strengths are.” Shift your thinking from the perceived obstacle and shine the light on your gifts. “The obstacle is not in the way, the obstacle is the way.”   Winstonclements.com Twitter: @WinstonSpeaker Instagram: @WinstonSpeaker Winston’s TEDx — “Your Limitations Are An Illusion” Toastmasters.org Sean Stephenson Extreme Ownership: How U.S. Navy SEALs Lead and Win, by Jocko Willink and Leif Babin   Instagram: @WeStudyLeaders LinkedIn: @TheLeadershipPodcast Facebook: @westudyleaders Twitter: @westudyleaders Website: The Leadership Podcast info@theleadershippodcast.com    ~~~~~ ~~~~~ Strategic Partners   The Leadership Podcast is proud to announce a new initiative with thoughtLEADERS to provide very short podcasts called Chalk Talks. Have you ever felt limited by your circumstances? We've all been there! Perhaps you feel limited by a health condition, financial struggles or difficult relationships? I was born with a condition known as brittle bones disorder and the main symptom is bones that break very, very easily! This condition limited me especially during childhood because I had to undergo numerous surgeries and missed out on a lot of fun moments. I remember the intense sense of frustration I used to feel, at having to watch from my bedroom window while my sisters and all the other kids in the neighbourhood played outside in the sunshine. The turning point for me came many years later, after I had successfully graduated from University with a degree in Computer Science. My confidence had taken a big hit because I was struggling to find employment – unlike many of my peers. Something needed to change! I decided to stop comparing my life to other people, to stop doubting in my own abilities and to stop letting a disability define me as a person! Breaking through my self-imposed barriers empowered me to build a successful tech career with some of the largest corporations in the world – and today I am using my speaking to train organisations on the topics of Resilience, Change Management, Diversity & Inclusion.   Winston Ben Clements  Resilience & Diversity Speaker and Trainer       Website: www.iCoachNutrition.com Instagram: @icoachnutrition Facebook: iCoach Nutrition YouTube: iCoach Nutrition Twitter: @JustinNutrition LinkedIn: Justin Murphy Email: justin@icoachnutrition.com

Despite his small stature (3 feet tall) and use of a wheelchair, Winston has taken a stand for a quality of life that knows no limits. Nowadays he is a speaker and trainer, empowering audiences worldwide to break through their own barriers. Winston’s mission is to inspire 1 BILLION people to unleash their full human potential. In 2018 he delivered a TEDx talk titled “Your Limitations Are An Illusion” that has had a massive impact online. Learn more about his work at winstonclements.com In this episode we dive into: Winston’s life and lifestyle as someone diagnosed with Ostegenesis Imperfecta, or Brittle Bone Disorder. How Winston knew that he was destined for big things in this world as a child, and how he used that as fuel to propel himself forward even during the hard times. Why even though he was born with a physical disorder, he says he’s overcome more mental challenges than physical ones. Winston’s gratitude for the support of his family and friends and how he came to this realization at a young age. How his parents pushed him to figure things out on his own, and gave him the extra encouragement to be brave and proactive at school by initiating conversations and playing with other kids. Learning how everyone is essentially the same under the surface and for many of us we are going through the same struggles. Taking responsibility for your life versus living your life in a victim mentality. Why Winston’s mission is to inspire a BILLION people, for others and himself. How to stop letting perceived disabilities and limitations define us. The mindset spectrum and the tools we can use to keep us reaching for resilience and positivity. The personal and business relationship benefits to being involved in different networks. The 80/20 rule Winston sets for himself for following people on social media and creating content. Why Winston feels it is his responsibility to be proactive with his challenges. How to take ownership for your thoughts and feelings and direct them towards a positive mindset. Focusing on the things that you can do rather than what you cannot do and how Winston continues to struggle with too much attachment to the outcomes in his business. www.brenttieri.com

“I’m in a unique position because I’m going to be more memorable and I use this to reach as many people as possible” In this episode, Jay interviews Winston Clements who shares his story of being memorable and his perspectives on how resilience and positivity should be a part of everyone’s lives. Listen in now to find out why. KEY TAKEAWAYS I started in corporate financial services within technology roles and then moved to consultancy work in software engineering. I initially began public speaking as a hobby but demand for my speaking work has increased and the majority of my time is now focused on sharing my story. I have a condition known as Brittle Bone. This means my bones break very easily, during my childhood I experienced more than 100 breaks in my bones, this is the nature of the condition but as I have grown older it has stabilized. I’ve always been open with people about my story and it inspired me to want to be a public speaker. You have a very strong mindset, where does that come from? I had physical challenges, but my parents brought me up to believe I was the same as anyone else. My sister and I have always been treated equally. So, at school, I expected to be the same as everyone else. Overprotecting me would have hindered my progression, I was able to get out there fall over a few times and learn to pick myself up which is the reality for everyone. I had my down days like everyone else, but I learnt to focus on my strengths. I’ve always found it easy to make connections, be present in the situation and so I concentrated on developing those and being happy. What challenges did you have gaining employment? In my mind, I thought getting a job would be very straightforward, but it took me 6 months to find my first graduate job. During this time, I looked at my mindset and I realised I needed more resilience as it's not just about having the talent but about keeping going even though I didn’t see results straight away. Where did you find resilience? Lots of my close friends got jobs within 1 or 2 months and I started to question how it was possible for them not me. I then realised I needed to look closely at myself and stop playing the victim, blaming it on being different. So, I decided to take ownership of it and instead of applying for 6 or 7 jobs a week I doubled my efforts over everything. Have you had any mentors? I’ve had several mentorship experiences and some that have been life changing. One of my mentors helped me to understand my mission and purpose – that my disability, is my gift, it is about a bigger picture and supporting others. Mentors – it’s all about finding the right fit someone who has experience of where you want to be and someone who you have a rapport with. How do you deal with the down days? I’m a human being and being resilient is a spectrum. Like everybody else, there are days where I feel more or less resilient than on other days. I surround myself with people who are honest with me, pull me up and aren’t afraid to tell me how it is and expect accountability from me. What are you doing at the moment? I still do some consultancy work but am hoping to move across to speaking full time and sharing my message as much as possible through courses and workshops. The thing that has enabled me is that it is my passion, I just want to give value and help people. When you put value first and concentrate being the best at what you do everything else just falls into place. BEST MOMENTS ‘They just wanted me to have as normal an experience as possible’ ‘The easy route is usually not the best route’ ‘The comfort zone is to stay in the victim mentality, at that moment you don’t have to try’ ‘If you take action you can change things for yourself’ ‘Failure happens the day you stop trying and anything in between is feedback’ ‘Whatever you have you need to turn it into a positive’ ‘When an individual messages me to let me know I’ve made an impact on them’ VALUABLE RESOURCES https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/business-mentor-podcast/id1370793386?mt=2  ABOUT THE HOST Jay Dhillon is a serial entrepreneur, investor and philanthropist based in the UK with a proven track record of growing businesses from start-up to success- and helping others do the same. From humble beginnings, Jay grew his first business from 0-500 employees and three locations, racking up sales of over £30 million – all without any investment other than a small amount of savings. The business went on to acquire major clients such as Landrover, Jaguar, Toyota and New Look, to name a few. Its huge success inevitably brought about outside interest and at the age of 33, Jay eventually sold the company to a London investment firm in Doyen Resources. Today, Jay owns several businesses in different sectors and helps entrepreneurs achieve success. A calling to give back and help others led to Jay being chosen for the highly-coveted role as a Prince’s Trust mentor, where his achievements were marked by a personal invitation to Buckingham Palace to meet Prince Charles. After helping several young entrepreneurs to success as a mentor for the Trust, Jay’s burning desire to bring his wisdom and knowledge to a wider audience ultimately triggered the concept of The Business Mentor Podcast. Jay feels that anyone can achieve success in business with the right advice and mentoring and is now sharing his knowledge with his growing audience via his podcast. In the UK alone 95% of business fail within the first five years and Jay’s aim is to reduce that number. Backed with the hard-earned knowledge and experience from his time in business, The Business Mentor Podcast will share Jay’s personal business lessons as well those of other successful entrepreneur guests who share their wisdom and secrets on the show.  CONTACT METHOD https://www.jay-dhillon.com/ https://uk.linkedin.com/in/jaydhillon https://www.instagram.com/jaydhillonuk/ GUEST BIO Winstons Website for more details: https://winstonclements.com Winston shares personal stories from his life and explains the role of resilience in overcoming challenging situations.
