It's a virtual walk through the history of world-class waterski jumping when Host Wade Cox sits down with his amazing bestie, Jim “The Cannonball” Clunie. Wrapping up a week of coaching kids together at the Saskatoon Waterski Club in the far northern reaches of Jim's native Canada, Jim and Wade are swapping memories from their own early days on the water. The pair recall what it was like training and coming of age together under the watchful eye of legendary water ski coach Jack Travers (and his wife Leilani) in the 1980s and marvel at the level of competition they experienced on the pro tour. Jim took home a truckload of top honors over the years, landing him in the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame. As a jump specialist, he helped lead Canada's National Team to world championship medals in 1991 and 1993 before ultimately retiring to go into his family's trucking business. These days, as president of the Saskatoon Waterski Club, Jim is inspiring new generations of young water skiers to embrace the sport he loves almost as much as he loved the sentimental (and competitive!) journey he took with Wade back in the day. Enjoy this memorable episode of Ski With Wade!TOPICS COVERED: · A quick overview of Jim's amazing waterskiing career in Canada and around the world.· How Jim and Wade first met as teen-agers at Jack Travers' ski school in Florida, forging a lifelong relationship through shared training, coaching, bunkbeds and laundry!· What it was like to be a couple of middle-class teen-agers training alongside larger-than-life gods of water skiing in the 1980s.· Celebrating the 50th anniversary of Jack Travers Waterski School and the who's who of graduates who have led the sport for decades.· How slalom differed from jumping out on the pro tour circuit, including some unexpected challenges that required intense focus.· About a big turning point in 1989 that shaped Jim's entire future vision and work ethic based on lessons learned from Geoff Carrington, whose career was cut short by a crash that left him with speech and mobility issues.· How training for jump events has evolved, including a lot more time dedicated to conditioning at the gym and changes in approach to ramp time and training.· The shifting landscape among various nationals competing for World Support the showClick here check out previous episodes of Ski With Wade. Catholic Drive Time - 877-757-9424 Date – Monday, April 17th - 2023 – St. Stephen Harding St. Stephen Harding was an English noble who consecrated himself to the monastic life in the Abbey of Sherbonne. He later joined the Abbey of Molesme in France under the direction of St. Robert and Blessed Alberic, but when the monastery declined, they left with St. Stephen and 18 other monks to establish a new abbey in Cîteaux, known as the Cistercians. St. Stephen became the abbot and wrote the statutes of the monastery, which were approved by Pope Paschal II. He fought to maintain strict observance and prayed for novices, and eventually St. Bernard and his companions arrived, leading to the establishment of the Abbey of Clairvaux. St. Stephen died in 1134, known for his humility and dedication to the monastic life. St. Stephen Harding, Pray for us. I’m happy to be back podcasting. We had to take a break while we spent last spring and summer planning for TLS Healthy at School. I couldn’t start the new year without reflecting back on the most unprecedented and challenging time in my career as an educator. It has also been the most rewarding. It is a really exciting time to be in education. COVID has forced us to reexamine everything we do. It has accelerated some things like how we integrate technology while reminding us of the simple pleasures of childhood like being outside in the woods. Most importantly, it has taught us the power of community and what can happen when that community is united in a singular goal. The Lexington School’s goal this summer was to provide a high-quality in-person and hybrid educational experience for our students. This podcast takes you through how we made it happen with specific stories, details, and examples of what we did to be successful to have kids on campus while including those at home. Huge thanks to everyone who contributed to the podcast this month: Faculty members Megan Conley, Tracy Young, Mona Azeem, Becky Johnson, Katie Farmwald, Amanda Hale, Beth Pride, and students Max, Dillon, and Nathan. Alicia Maher is a Cork woman from Mayfield who uses cannabis for treating her chronic pain. Alicia's problems started aged 17 when she went in for a routine surgery to have her tonsils removed. She had complications afterwards when the left side of her throat opened up first, it haemorrhaged, and she had to go back for further surgery. A week later, the other side of her throat opened up as well, so she had to go back for a second surgery to have that side closed up. She was an inpatient of the South Infirmary for a couple of months because I had to be treated with antibiotics. But when I was in the South Infirmary, I started bleeding from the bowel. They then transferred her to CUH to see a specialist but when she was an inpatient there, she got toxic megacolon, so her colon haemorrhaged while she was in the hospital. She had emergency surgery then and they removed my entire colon and she woke up with an ileostomy bag. She then received more bad news when pre-cancerous cells were found in her rectum, meaning she underwent a proctectomy to remove her entire rectum and anus. While recovering from that, she contracted MRSA and began to experience chronic pain. This led to her having to take up to 30 painkillers a day. Her whole life then revolved around every four hours having to take the medication and forcing myself to eat every four hours, otherwise I would get sick. It was absolutely horrendous. I've spent the last two years at home not able to do anything Increasingly suffering from fatigue and forgetfulness, she was referred to her pain management clinic for an urgent appointment last year. However, her pain consultant had left the department and hadn't been replaced, so all future appointments were cancelled. It was then she turned to the cannabis vape. To celebrate, we've decided to revisit some of our favorite entities in the only way we ever could, by pitting them against each other in a 36 character battle bracket to determine which character will reign supreme. We compare their histories, origins, strengths, weaknesses; leading each bout to violent and sometimes surprising conclusions. Call it a war. Call it a tournament. Call it all out Armageddon. I grew up a serious people-pleaser. Today we are talking about perfectionism as an enemy of liberation. As many of you know, I am an activist and I've been an activist since I was a teenager. I look at liberation both from a political perspective, but also from a spiritual perspective. In both realms, for me, liberation is the aim. Whether politically or spiritually, my goal is to become more free. In the personal development world, we have talked about perfectionism a lot, as something to overcome or as something to squash. What we don't talk about enough is why we're trying to shed this perfectionism—and it's not just to make our own lives easier and more pleasant. Although certainly less perfectionism means more joy and and a more delightful life, there's more to it than that. In my mind the real problem with perfectionism is that it keeps us from being free both individually and collectively. In this episode, we'll dive into perfectionism and how we can get it to loosen its grip.
