Why History Matters: L.A. Wildfires Past, Present, and Future

Then & Now

Play Episode Listen Later May 21, 2025 67:50

In this week's episode of then & now, we present a recording of a recent panel discussion focusing on L.A. wildfires past, present, and future. This program is part of the “Why History Matters” series presented by the UCLA Meyer and Renee Luskin Department of History—a series dedicated to the belief that historical knowledge is an indispensable, and often missing, ingredient in public debate.”Why History Matters: L.A. Wildfires Past, Present, and Future,” brought experts together to explore how historical and indigenous perspectives can reshape our understanding of wildfires, especially in light of the devastating Los Angeles County fires in January 2025. The discussion, anchored in the Fowler Museum at UCLA's “Fire Kinship: Southern California Native Ecology and Art” exhibition, interrogates prevailing narratives that frame fire solely as a destructive force, instead foregrounding indigenous epistemologies that recognize fire as a vital ecological process and a generational resource. Professors Hitoshi Abe, Gerald Clarke, Jr., and Char Miller distinguish three primary drivers of contemporary wildfire crises: climate change, fire suppression policies, and patterns of urban expansion into fire-prone landscapes. To more effectively mitigate and adapt to the escalating risks posed by wildfires, these panelists discuss ways to integrate traditional ecological knowledge with contemporary land management and urban policy.Moderator:Stephen Aron is the Calvin and Marilyn Gross Director and President of the Autry Museum of the American West. A specialist in the history of frontiers, borderlands, and the American West, Dr. Aron holds degrees from Amherst College (B.A.) and the University of California, Berkeley (M.A., Ph.D.).Panelists:Hitoshi Abe is a Professor in the Department of Architecture and Urban Design at the University of California, Los Angeles. Professor Abe is currently the director of Paul I. and Hisako Terasaki Center for Japanese Studies and holds the Terasaki Chair for contemporary Japanese study. In 2017, he established xLAB, an international think tank initiative that examines architecture's elastic boundaries and considers new possibilities through interdisciplinary collaboration in the study of the future built environment.Gerald Clarke Jr. is a Professor in the Department of Ethnic Studies and Special Advisor to the Chancellor on Native American Relations at the University of California, Riverside. He is an enrolled member of the Cahuilla Band of Indians and lives on the Cahuilla Indian Reservation. Gerald oversees the Clarke family cattle ranch and remains heavily involved in Cahuilla culture. Char Miller is the W.M. Keck Professor of Environmental Analysis and History at Pomona College. His teaching and research reflect his fascination with all things environmental. Classes on U.S. environmental history, water in the U.S. West, and public lands management, like those on urbanization and the interplay between the natural and built landscapes, have deeply informed his writing.

The EU-funded SUNRISE Project piloted its novel Tool for Remote Physical Infrastructure Inspection with selected critical infrastructure operators across three European countries. The SUNRISE project aims to ensure greater availability, reliability, and continuity of critical infrastructures, to the benefit of all European citizens. Since its inception in October 2022, 41 expert organisations from 15 countries have been developing a suite of new technologies and solutions to safeguard critical infrastructures during pandemics and other major risks. Drone technology from SUNRISE Project Over the past two months SUNRISE partners were piloting one of its tools at locations in Spain, Slovenia and Italy working with transport, water and electricity operators across these three countries. The SUNRISE Tool for Remote Physical Infrastructure Inspection aims to deliver a solution for continuous, data-driven physical infrastructure inspection using satellite images, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and machine learning methods for anomaly detection. Using these technologies, it will help detect any issues and rectify them without the physical presence of workers in the area under inspection, improving safety for the people involved. The piloting work began in Slovenia where partners worked with electricity utility company ELES and Slovenian Railways. The next location was in Italy working with hydroelectricity company Hydro Dolomiti Energia (HDE). The final pilot was implemented in Marbella, Spain with water utility company ACOSOL. Speaking about the piloting work, SUNRISE project coordinator Aljosa Pasic said: "Piloting the suite of SUNRISE tools in real world scenarios is a crucial milestone in the project. Getting the opportunity to work with critical infrastructure operators across Europe and taking their feedback and inputs on board is extremely valuable as we continue to develop each technological element - in this case the remote infrastructure inspection tool. SUNRISE project partners at XLAB and ICS in Slovenia, SKYLD in Cyprus, and Eviden in Spain have been working alongside critical infrastructure operators to ensure the piloting is as effective as possible, showing the benefits of our tool in remote infrastructure inspection and anomaly detection, such as saving cost or optimizing valuable resources. We hope that we can take learnings from this round of piloting work into the further development of the remote infrastructure inspection tool while continuing to work with ACOSOL, ELES, Slovenian Railways and Hydro Dolomiti Energia to assist in the continuity and availability of their respective critical infrastructures in the face of future adverse events." SUNRISE is being led by Eviden. The full suite of SUNRISE Tools The RIBAC Tool The RiBAC tool will help reduce the risk involved in physical access to critical infrastructures in a scalable and privacy-preserving way. The novel architecture and software components in the RiBAC tool will address compliance with GDPR, privacy by design and default parameters and guidelines for meeting GDPR requirements. Was dagegen spricht zeige ich in diesem Podcast. Verpassen Sie nicht was es im XLAB neues gibt. Bryan Bishop (@ Bcbishop) and The Verge video team recently took a visit to Industrial Light & Magic’s xLab. It’s a kind of next-generation entertainment sandbox, exploring virtual reality, augmented reality, and other immersive experiences — all under the umbrella of the Star Wars universe. One of the people we spoke with is xLab creative director John Gaeta. John’s a real visual effects visionary. He created bullet time for the Matrix, pioneered new methods of virtual cinematography, he worked on Speed Racer. Hearing his ideas about the future of storytelling and an interconnected virtual world, all originating from stories like Star Wars, is a little like reading Ready Player One - only he and the xLab team are actually making it for real. We liked what he had to say so much, that we decided to break out our interview with him into its own podcast.
