What does it mean to trust plan A? Is having a plan B smart, "realistic," or a mask for fear? A recent research study (Shin and Milkman, 2016) revealed the dangers and risks of having a “Plan B" when you truly want your “Plan A” to succeed. The researchers found that once you begin thinking about a fallback plan, your desire to achieve your ultimate goal decreases. They found that those who were encouraged to develop a Plan B were less likely to achieve their goal than those who did not receive these instructions. Not only were the Plan B participants less successful, their interest in reaching their original goal decreased.   All this and more on this week's episode of the Live with Grace podcast, featuring Elijah Melendez, a D1 Football player at McNeese State University. Since taking art lessons as a young girl, my art teachers always stressed the importance of looking at my artwork from a few steps back every now and then. Taking a step back has always helped me appreciate my progress, and gain clarity/direction. I've talked about the importance of creative habits & hobbies in the podcast episode "The Power of Creative Outlets" with Angel Roman. A benefit of artistic hobbies that I haven't talked about, however, is their hidden lessons—those that apply to life outside of art. The word "perspective" has two definitions on Google: 1. "the art of drawing solid objects on a two-dimensional surface so as to give the right impression of their height, width, depth, and position in relation to each other when viewed from a particular point" 2. "a particular attitude toward or way of regarding something; a point of view." This episode ties together both definitions :) I hope y'all enjoy. -Grace

As an athlete, I've experienced many times when I felt like everything was spinning out of my control: practice may not have gone well, school may seem like too much, my body may be aching, and my situation might seem less than ideal. These are the times when finding PEACE is most important. Not when we base our mental and emotional state on the words, actions, and decisions of others, nor our circumstances, but when we ground ourselves from within. It is only when we, as athletes, students, teenagers, adults, and people, find peace, that we discover true freedom. Accountability is something that we all need. However, taken to an extreme, the feedback we give ourselves can tear us apart. It can make us feel small. The tough, no-slack mindset is good in many aspects. It yields discipline, hard work, relentless drive and motivation. It's something that is actually praised for many athletes.. something that people are taught to embrace. However, the problem with the mindset is that taken too far, it cultures resentment toward your goals and toward YOURSELF as a PERSON. The only way to detach yourself from negative self talk is to develop a deep sense of self awareness & self love that is unaffected by anything that happens. In this episode, I discuss how I believe people develop this love and respect for themselves that can carry them through difficult seasons.  Thanks for listening :)

What you don't see: the missed National Championship opportunities, the mistakes, and the times when he fell short of expectations. In this episode, Greene and I discuss the power of appreciating failure and having patience/grace/trust with yourself when you know you tried your best. After all, it's much worse to not try than to fail. Finding a healthy relationship with hard work and developing CONSISTENCY in your habits/work ethic is difficult in today's day and age. The "100% effort, 100% of the time" philosophy is not realistic, sustainable, nor ideal. Learn how the "85% rule" can help you prepare and prioritize the times you need to be fully checked-in to give 100% effort...… without going into overdrive or becoming burnt out. The choices to rely on a positive, inner circle and to not allow certain people to have power over your life can, often times, make or break you. In this episode, we discuss the importance of these factors & the importance of leaning into your relationship with God. Thank you so much for listening! -Grace
