In this episode, Dana Cowles shares his compelling story of growing up with intense anxiety, navigating childhood fears, and the impactful moment that altered his outlook on life. Recounting a traumatic car accident from his youth, Dana explores the profound shift it sparked, intensifying his journey toward understanding fear, helplessness, and personal resilience. Through his experiences, Dana challenges the notion of fearlessness, offering fresh insights into the roles of anxiety, discomfort, and vulnerability in building inner strength.   About the Guest: Dana Cowles is an advocate for mental health awareness and a thought leader on resilience. His life journey has been marked by overcoming anxiety and redefining courage beyond fearlessness. With personal insights shaped by traumatic experiences, Dana now speaks out on the value of embracing discomfort and viewing anxiety as a universal, useful tool for growth.   Key Takeaways: Challenging the Pursuit of Fearlessness: Dana discusses how chasing a fear-free life is often counterproductive. Embracing discomfort, rather than avoiding it, is a more authentic path to resilience. Transforming Anxiety into Strength: Dana shares how his childhood car accident left lasting psychological effects, deepening his understanding of helplessness and leading him to embrace anxiety as part of the human experience. Using Vulnerability as a Tool for Growth: Dana's journey underscores the importance of accepting uncomfortable emotions as valuable signals, rather than problems to eliminate.   Want to be a guest on Healthy Mind, Healthy Life? Let's be honest with each other first thing today: we like to be in control. We like to have control. We like to have things under control. We are kinda control freaks. I want to talk about something *really* subtle re: control today so that we don't wind up thinking we have control where we do NOT have control and then find ourselves in a trap of trying to exert control over the outside world thinking, "wait, I've done this before and it worked" when it most decidedly did NOT and does NOT work. When things go according to plan, it doesn't have that much to do with us. When things fall apart, it doesn't have that much to do with us. Control is an inside job...the things we have the MOST control over are our thoughts, our feelings, and our words + actions. It sometimes LOOKS like we have control where we don't. And if we fall for that little trick, we wind up spinning our wheels in an effort to stay in control...when we our just pouring our energy into the wrong spot. Let's talk about it. Today on The Transforming Anxiety it's episode #258, Predictability vs. Control. In this episode of the "Let's Talk Brain Health" podcast, Dr. Ian Robertson, Ph.D., a renowned clinical psychologist and brain health expert, delves into the intricacies of the human mind and its capacity for resilience and adaptation. With over four decades of experience in neuropsychology and brain rehabilitation, Dr. Robertson shares his insights on how attention systems in the brain can be harnessed for emotional and cognitive control.   Dr. Robertson emphasizes the often-underestimated power individuals have over their brains. He explains that managing attention is crucial for gaining control over emotions and health. His work at the Global Brain Health Institute and Trinity College Dublin has significantly influenced both academia and public understanding of brain health.   The conversation shifts to stress, defined as the perception of environmental demands exceeding one's coping abilities, leading to anxiety. Dr. Robertson highlights the double-edged nature of human evolution: while our advanced brains enable future planning and goal-setting, they also predispose us to chronic anxiety. This anxiety, if sustained, can have detrimental effects on our bodies, emotions, thinking, and behavior. He stresses the importance of action in combating anxiety, citing the transformative power of taking even small steps. Dr. Robertson also discusses the Brain Health Project at the University of Texas, Dallas. This ambitious project aims to improve brain health across the lifespan through interventions and annual assessments of participants. The project challenges the static view of brain abilities, encouraging improvement in various cognitive and emotional aspects. In closing, Dr. Robertson advises listeners not to be overwhelmed by stress or anxiety. By understanding and acknowledging these feelings, individuals can find confidence in action despite anxiety, ultimately gaining control over their brain health. Rick is more than just your typical mindset coach--he goes beyond traditional coaching and to create rapid transformation for his clients. Instead of just coaching his clients through their current problem, he teaches them how to develop a warrior's mindset  We chat about… Rick's unique approach to mindset coaching & how he helps others develop a warrior's mindset Why anxiety is actually a strength  Finding presence in the present to leverage your superpowers  How to harness your advanced abstract feeling and creative imagination as a gift, instead of a curse Fear as a natural part of growth and why “each level brings a new devil”  How to leverage your problem solving skills, creative thinking, resourcefulness, and support system to find confidence in uncertainty The relationship between comparison and anxiety Why we get so far from authenticity to avoid comparison & how to remove the masks to get back to your true self The 3 things men and women desire in relationship  Asking the question, “when should a woman settle?” Women are paving the way and making our own rules for how to play two roles  Debating masculine and feminine energies--are they really “masculine” and “feminine”? Rick's experience of hitting rock bottom & how he used this as a powerful moment for transformation Why everything is a choice & how to make choices more easily by getting comfortable with change How to ditch the stuff you're carrying that isn't yours and identify who you really are  The real reason change is so hard + how to get over the fear of change Using awareness to move through anxiety, panic, and other difficult emotions  …and SO much more! Stress is no joke! It is one of the biggest contributing factors to issues such as auto-immunity, anxiety, insomnia and depression.   In my experience, highly sensitive people are often more susceptible to the impact of stress, as we feel so deeply, and can develop stress related illnesses. Learning to reduce the impact of stress is one of the most important skills a highly sensitive person can do!   Heartmath is one of the best tools to help you do just that.   In case you haven't heard of it, Heartmath technology combines bio-feedback with heart-centered breathing to help your heart achieve ‘coherence.' Coherence is a state that reduces stress and helps the body heal. As you bring your physical, mental and emotional systems into coherent alignment, you begin to experience increased access to your heart's intuitive guidance. I have been using it myself and have experienced wonderful results.   That is why I am so excited to introduce you to this week's guest, MY Heartmath coach, Brad Hubbell. Brad is an HRV (Heart Rate Variability) Coach and has been practicing Heartmath for twenty years. His story is one of the most remarkable I have ever heard…within a week of doing Heartmath his lifelong migraines disappeared and never returned, along with his insomnia and acid reflux…and that's just the beginning!!   In this episode, Brad shares his miraculous journey of going from being an extremely angry, anxious and chronically depressed person, to being a truly joyful and peaceful soul. You will get to experience a little taste of Heartmath in today's episode as well. Brad offered to send anyone who reaches out to him a copy of the ebook Transforming Stress or Transforming Anxiety. His email is brad@medicineinbalance.com. Please my friend, if you are struggling right now, give yourself the gift of connecting with Brad. Make an appointment. If you are open, he can really help you.   Key learnings: As you bring your physical, mental and emotional systems into coherent alignment, you begin to experience increased access to your heart's intuitive guidance. Heart rate variability (HRV) is a measure of the beat-to-beat changes in heart rate. The normal variability in heart rate is due to the synergistic action of the two branches of the autonomic nervous system (ANS)—the part of the nervous system that regulates most of the body's internal functions. The sympathetic nerves act to accelerate heart rate, while the parasympathetic (vagus) nerves slow it down. The sympathetic and parasympathetic branches of the ANS are continually interacting to maintain cardiovascular activity in its optimal range and to permit appropriate reactions to changing external and internal conditions. The analysis of HRV therefore serves as a dynamic window into the function and balance of the autonomic nervous system. I am recommending EVERY highly sensitive person learn about Heartmath and give yourself the gift of a session with Brad! “Within a week of doing Heartmath, my lifelong migraines disappeared, along with my insomnia and acid reflux. After 2 months, I was off all anxiety and depression medication. I teach this to others because it's transformed my life completely.” Brad Hubbell   To schedule an appointment with Brad, or to request a copy of the ebook he mentioned, email him at brad@medicineinbalance.com   If you love the image on the wall behind me of Mother Mary Blessing the World, you can order your own museum quality copy at www.deepaliu.com

Welcome to Episode #35 of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast! This week, I welcome Rama Saeed onto the show. She is a yoga teacher from Ghana. Rama Saeed first encountered yoga through a workout app that had a small offering of yoga, and she avoided “clicking that yoga button for as long as possible.” Then she realized it wasn't anything like she expected. Another thing she came to realize— she couldn't touch her toes. She want around to her family members, asking if they can touch their toes and she was the only one who couldn't! So, at first, she didn't enjoy yoga at all but she kept on coming back again and again to yoga. She was working in horse riding, training, and trick riding and very fortunately, when she wanted to become a yoga teacher, her family was supportive. Rama received a scholarship to travel to Kenya— where she had never been before and knew no one at all— to study yoga with the Africa Yoga Project. --> $15 Coupon For Yoga Classes With Me: https://get.moxie.xyz/wildyogatribe So tell me more about Rama Saeed Rama Saeed is a yoga teacher from Ghana who started practicing yoga at the age of 18. In 2019, she received a scholarship with the Africa Yoga Project to travel to Kenya and to complete a 200hr yoga teacher training program. Shortly after returning home to Ghana, Rama began teaching outreach classes and teaching at Bliss Yoga in Accra. She has also completed a 200hr PYT certification from Yogazama, and she teaches power vinyasa, restorative flow, and psychotherapeutic yoga. What to expect in the Yoga In Ghana episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast My conversation with Rama Saeed, a yoga teacher from Ghana, was so meaningful as she shared her journey of how yoga has allowed her to open up the “curtains” to the world, and to knock on different doors of her own being and body. If you're looking to tune into a podcast episode that is all about being brave and breaking the mould then this is the conversation for you. Thank you for listening to the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast— be well. For the skimmers - What's in the Yoga in Ghana episode? Join our guest, Eunice Park, as she reflects on the blessings and challenges of her heritage as a Korean American, as well as her accompaniment of immigrant young adults. This episode is filled with wisdom born of experience as Eunice creates safe space for people to do their inner work and find freedom.   Eunice notes “Rather than having to prove our value and prove our worth through materialism or through money or finances, our inherent value is in our created-ness. We are born with dignity and the basis of our creation, this Imago Dei, this gratuitous love of God. We cannot earn that love and we cannot have that love destroyed. God wouldn't love us any less or any more by anything that we do.”   “The job of the minister becomes accompanying and journeying with that person, helping guide them, being there for support and being their safe space so that they can let that inner identity manifest fully on the outside, rather than trying to figure out who they are on the outside in, and feeling insecure about it....So that they can understand that who they are is because of whose they are. Who they are is because of God, who God is.”   “Understanding poverty as something much more than giving up money or a salary: it's a way of release, a way of freedom. I think the pandemic invites us to a sense of poverty of control...we think we're in control, but are we really?  I haven't left my house at all for a year; understanding that this is how our lives are and leaning into this understanding of poverty is a freedom, rather than a lack of control. Today's guest is Francine Favret, a Heart-centered Coach, Speaker, and Empowered Empath who assists the ambitious in reconnecting with what matters most and guiding them to inner peace. We explore her life's mission in this interview, leaving people feeling wholly alive and reconnecting with what matters most. Listen in as we unwrap her story and teachings to help people communicate with their true selves. The Journey from a Corporate Career to Entrepreneurial Coach 2:43Francine began working at a young age when her parents operated a convenience shop. She was introduced to the business world in her early twenties and worked in retail for about six years. Through her 25-years long career in corporate leadership and coaching, she enjoyed the element of assisting others in progressing to the next level. 3:57Francine felt a calling to exercise her entrepreneurial gift and leave the corporate world, to have more space in order to reach a larger audience. In 2015, she launched her own coaching company, and the rest is history. Helping People Get to the Next Level Personally 6:08Francine knew she was attracting many high achievers. They were already successful at reaching goals. Still, she thought that what they needed most was the spiritual aspect and getting reconnected to who they are. 7:37She related to these clients, and decided that she needed to pivot. Francine now leads her clients on the path to understand what truly ignites the light in their soul and advance in discovering who they are and what truly matters. Moving Forward with Fear 11:58When something uncomfortable is going on, it’s probably not real fear. Francine explained that genuine fear - fight-or-flight mode – has a real purpose, to help us survive. For the most part, what we experience is a false fear – a false alarm. 13:44Recognizing that uncomfortable feeling and what is holding hour back, will help you break through that barrier. The more you step up, the more you'll be able to conquer it and get there. You have to do the thing. The Universe Is Working for You 17:27Francine trusts Tony Robbins when he says that life happens for us, not for us. She also suggests keeping a journal at the end of each day because writing is powerful. From Anxiety Towards Peace 19:21She mentioned meditate can help, we can have a morning routine of spending time creating space for self-care. A lot of times, that a lot of time, it will manifest in anxiety. It doesn't have to belong but creating that space, which will be helpful. Dealing with Emotions 23:09If there's an individual or situation that is getting in the way of you feeling fulfilled. It's the internal stuff that makes the external world manifest. It could be a certain personality, or it may be a situation. Maybe it's a particular situation. It might be fear. Fear may be providing you with a chance to overcome your fear. Transforming Anxiety to Peace and Serenity 27:46It’s a shift! When we’re off purpose, out of alignment with who we are, our body/mind/spirit will set off an alarm system and it manifests as anxiety. The more we get clear on our purpose, on why we’re here, it gets better. You can start by getting rid of the noise, and listen to what your soul really wants. It’s as simple as just getting still. You may be wondering "what does my Thyroid have to do with mental health" but they are more connected than most people realize.  Your Thyroid as the master gland controls the rest of your hormones and impacts your mental health and emotions.  When your Thyroid levels are off you will feel either more depressed or more anxious.  Dr. Felice Gersh, an Integrative Medicine Specialist and OB/GYN joins me today to teach us about the important role the Thyroid plays in the management of our mental health.  She will also cover what tests you need to ask your doctor and address the connection between gluten and Thyroid health, as well as how the gut impacts the health of your Thyroid.  Dr. Gersh also talks about post-partum Thyroiditis and the impact of pregnancy on Thyroid health. Other topics addressed include the importance of sleep and stress management, diet and nutrition, supplements for Thyroid health, and overall hormonal balance.  Tune in to learn more!  Follow Dr. Sekandari on:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dr_nafisa_sekandariFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/dr.sekandariJoin private FB Group Transforming Anxiety: https://www.facebook.com/groups/transforminganxietyWatch Video Recording on YoutubeLearn more about Dr. Sekandari's 6 week online course "Transforming Anxiety" by visiting https://www.transforminganxiety.com/course

Deborah co-authored the Transforming book series, published by New Harbinger. The series includes four titles, including Transforming Stress, Transforming Anger, Transforming Anxiety and Transforming Depression. She also co-authored Heart Intelligence: Connecting with the Intuitive Guidance of the Heart.   I had the pleasure to meet Deborah at the HeartMath Summit for Lifting Global Consciousness in Tulum this past fall. I was helping to facilitate their conference through the XChange facilitation methodology, which is in harmony with HeartMath in that it's all about focusing on strengths, thriving and flourishing. I fell in love with HeartMath's mission and work, the variety of HeartMath coherence practices we learned, as well as learning the science behind heart intelligence. This interview gives you a lot more information and understanding as to how our heart truly is the wise leader to follow. You will see why popular phrases like 'follow your heart' are backed by science and are real.   Here are a few main takeaways from our very in-depth conversation about all things heart connection related.   Things We Learned From This Episode   Our hearts naturally have a varied heart rate rhythm pattern, called HRV. Anything that is stressful will cause a more chaotic pattern wave, whereas when you are feeling joyful, peaceful or love, your wave pattern will be incoherence. You can learn to shift your mood and perception of life, and train yourself to get into heart coherence. This has extraordinarily healthy benefits on all aspects of your life. The way out of stress, anger and depression are connected to shifting your heart wave pattern. You can learn these techniques on the website, heartmath.com and/or with a HeartMath certified trainer and practitioner. Intuition, while often felt as a gut feeling, actually is signaled first in the heart and travels to the brain. 4. Gratitude actually opens our frontal lobe for compassion and allows for heart coherence. Another great reason to start and have a gratitude practice.             Enjoying the show?
